Class 130 In a forwardly moving tobacco filler comprising alternate stubs (mouthpiece portions) and unwrapped tobacco lengths, correct stub positioning is ensured by an element 30 adapted to enter the path of the filler behind a stub and to move forwardly faster than the filler so as to accelerate the stub if it is insufficiently advanced, and firm abuttal of the leading end part of the following tobacco length with the stub is effected by engaging and accelerating the part with an element 33 adapted to enter the filler path and move forward faster than the element 30. A further element 38 moving more slowly than the element 33 may be provided to engage and advance tobacco behind the leading end part so as partially to restore the consistency of the tobacco distribution in the length. As shown, incorporated in the continuous-rod machine described in Specification 709,197, a driven wheel 31 has two sets of such elements in the form of fingers 30, 33, 38, the fingers 30, 38 being fast on the wheel and the fingers 33 rotatable therewith but movable relative thereto on pivots 34. The fingers 30, 33, 38 intermittently engage the filler rod in the manner of the invention through a slit 32 in the tongue 21, a stationary cam 36, against which followers 35 on the fingers 33 are pressed by a spring 37, serving to advance the fingers 33 relative to the wheel 31 during such engagement to effect the desired action.
