In a mouthpiece cigarette-making machine, lengths of tobacco rod cut off from a tobacco stream fed through a tube 4 on to a table 5 are moved out of line with the stream on to a conveyer 16 moving faster than the stream by a means 8 which simultaneously moves each tobacco length sideways and in the direction of motion of the conveyer 16, whereby successive tobacco lengths are delivered on to the conveyer 16 whilst moving substantially at the speed of the conveyer, spaces being left therebetween into which stubs are inserted to form a composite rod. The tobacco stream emerging from the tube 4 is cut by a narrow knife 6 and the severed tobacco length is correctly positioned on the table 5 by a spring-loaded pivoted stop 7. Immediately after severing, the tobacco length is moved bodily sideways and forward through an arcuate path by a push bar 8 pivotally connected to two rotating levers 9, 10. When the bar 8 first engages the tobacco length the bar 8 has a component of motion in the direction of the tobacco stream approximately equal to the speed of the stream but by the time the tobacco length has been moved sideways to drop on to the conveyer 16, constituted by a cigarette paper web, it has been accelerated by the bar to a speed approximately equal to that of the conveyer 16. The table 5 is highly polished and the web 16 is arranged slightly lower than the table 5. A pivoted arm 22, Fig. 2, actuated by a cam 24 engages each tobacco length as soon as it is pushed off the plate 5 to ensure that it is deposited firmly on the web 16, a guide 26 being provided to ensure correct sideways positioning of the tobacco lengths on the web. The spaced tobacco lengths are carried by the web 16 towards a stub wheel which deposits stubs into the spaces as described in Specification 709,197, the paper being subsequently wrapped around the resulting composite filler.. The stop 7 is moved out of its normal position by the motion of the bar 8 but is returned thereto by a spring 20.
