[Class 94 (i)] [See also Group VI] A continuous rod or filler of tobacco for making cigarettes, or for cutting into sections for insertion into packages, is made by feeding the tobacco through a confining passage which determines the cross-sectional area of the filler, and removing the tobacco from the opposite end of the passage continuously and at a slower speed than that at which it is fed into the passage, so that the tobacco is compacted within the passage and is raised or formed to a crosssectional size which is at least equal to the minimum cross-section of the passage. Fig. 1 shows a conveyer band 1 receiving tobacco from feeding-apparatus 16 and moving the same along a trough 7 under rollers 8, 9 and on to a bridge piece 2, which leads to a second conveyer device 3, for example, a continuous paper web, which moves at a less velocity than the band 1. At the same time, the stream of tobacco is confined by side walls 10 and guides 11, together with a member 6 adjustably connected to a frame 62 so as to rest on top of the tobacco. The frame 62 is pivoted at 65 and also carries the roller 9. The tobacco may then pass under a compression roller 14 adjustable at 67, and the usual tongue 17. The side walls 10 preferably have a slight divergence to prevent choking or jamming of the tobacco, but the top wall 6 may slope downwards slightly.
