Abstract
1,038,057. Klystrons; ion-getter pumps. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 16, 1964 [July 8, 1963], No. 24969/64. Heading H1D. A high-frequency electron discharge device, e.g. a klystron, has an ion-draining electrode 21 asymmetrically disposed with respect to the beam axis within the beam collector structure 3. The electrode is composed, at least in part, from the group of reactive materials consisting of titanium, strontium, zirconium and any other transition elements of the 4th, 5th and 6th groups of the Periodic Table including the rare earths. Bombardment of the electrode by electrons or ions causes sputtering and a gasabsorbing substance is formed which vacuum pumps the device. Secondary electrons produced within the collector by beam bombardment are prevented from leaving the collector structure by the asymmetric field 34 produced by the negatively biased ion-drain electrode. The collector structure has an inclined bore 15 communicating with an exhaust tubulation 16.
