Abstract
A filler for use with bituminous road-surfacing materials is prepared by impregnating, in the presence of air, a material, such as ground slag, cement, or flue dust, with an emulsion of water containing at least one alkali metal silicate in a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons. The nonaqueous part constitutes at least 50% by weight of the emulsion and consists of a high molecular weight hydrocarbon, such as bitumen, tar, or petroleum distillation residues, and a fluxing agent capable of diluting on dissolving the hydrocarbon, e.g. kerosene, solvent naphtha &c. in proportions between 65 : 35 and 50 : 50. The impregnation is carried out in air preferably at room temperature in the proportion of 1 part by weight of the emulsion to 5-20 parts of the mineral, the final product containing a maximum of 2% of water.
