Abstract
A bituminous composition comprises a bitumen of mineral origin, a halohydrocarbon, preferably a chloroparaffin, and a compound of antimony, preferably the trioxide, which will react with the halohydrocarbon at elevated temperature. The antimony compound constitutes 2.5-10% by weight of the composition, and the halohydrocarbon 3-10%, i.e. in excess of the amount required to react with the antimony compound. The chloroparaffin melts between 50 DEG and 100 DEG C. and has a chlorine content of 40-80%. The composition may also contain 1.5-12% by weight of asbestos and a filler such as fly ash. The composition may be used to impregnate fibrous mats for use as roofing material.
