Abstract
本发明在画面中不配置引火放电特殊化的要而提高寻址的可靠性。本发明的气体放电显示装置,具有由发光色不同的3个单元构成的像素纵横排列的彩色显示用画面,将多灰度等级的帧置换成2灰度等级的多个子帧,对各子帧进行写入形式的寻址,顺次显示多个子帧,在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,强制点亮在构成画面的单元中与其对应的多灰度等级的数据值不是指示最低亮度的值的非最低亮度单元、和与所述非最低亮度单元邻接的至少1个单元。

技术领域
本发明涉及具有等离子体显示面板和等离子体地址液晶等的由气体放电产生发光的器件的气体放电显示装置。
背景技术
在彩色图像显示中使用AC型等离子体显示面板。当由这种等离子体显示面板进行显示时,在生成与显示数据的灰度等级值相应的次数的显示放电的点亮维持操作(Sustain)之前,进行由线顺次扫描实施的寻址。寻址是使作为构成画面的发光元件的单元中的应该点亮的单元带上比其它单元多的壁电荷的点亮/非点亮的设定操作。写入形式的寻址只在应该点亮的单元中引起地址放电,消去形式的寻址只在不应该点亮的单元中引起地址放电。
为了确实地引起地址放电,需要将脉冲宽度比放电延迟时间长的电压脉冲施加在单元上。但是,要一面满足该制约一面进行画面的高精细化和高图像分辨率化是困难的。由于缩小单元尺寸的高精细化使单元尺寸缩小时难以引起放电。即,放电延迟时间变长。由于高图像分辨率化增加水平图像分辨率时,因为每1显示行的扫描时间变短,所以必须缩短脉冲宽度。
关于放电延迟时间的缩短,在日本专利特开2002-297091号公报中,提出了在扫描电极附近配置辅助电极对并引起引火(Priming)放电的方案。进一步作为其改良,在日本专利特开2005-216593号公报中提出了在由隔离壁区划的辅助单元中引起引火放电的方案,使得引火放电供给过剩的空间电荷,导致串扰。

发明内容
追加用于引火放电的电极对和辅助单元的面板构成的变更,减少作为各单元的有效发光面积的比例的孔径率,降低显示的亮度。而且,使显示面板的制造工艺复杂化,引起优良品率下降。
本发明的目的是在画面中不配置引火放电特殊化的要素而提高寻址的可靠性。
达到上述目的的气体放电显示装置,具有由发光色不同的3个单元构成的像素纵横排列的彩色显示用画面,将多灰度等级的帧置换成2灰度等级的多个子帧,对各子帧进行写入形式的寻址,顺次显示所述多个子帧,在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,点亮在构成所述画面的单元中与其对应的多灰度等级的数据值不是指示最低亮度的值的非最低亮度单元、且强制点亮与上述非最低亮度单元邻接的至少1个单元。
所谓“强制点亮”意味着不管与注目单元对应的多灰度等级数据值如何都点亮注目单元。因为寻址是写入形式,所以在寻址中在要点亮的单元中引起地址放电。
非最低亮度单元是在多个子帧中的至少一个中应该点亮的单元。所以,通过在前头子帧中强制点亮非最低亮度单元,由前头子帧中的显示放电生成的空间电荷产生的引火效果和由显示放电引起的保护膜表面等的电介质表面的活性化容易引起第二个以后的子帧中的地址放电,防止发生地址放电错误。
此外,当在前头子帧中的点亮时,通过强制点亮非最低亮度单元和与非最低亮度单元邻接的单元,即,通过不发生由不点亮的单元(最低亮度单元)包围非最低亮度单元的“孤立点亮”,根据下列理由容易引起地址放电。
因为在邻接的多个单元中引起地址放电,所以当在各单元上施加用于引起地址放电的地址电压时,通过施加来自邻接单元的漏电场增强电场。此外,在多个单元中比较容易引起放电的单元中由先发生的地址放电产生的引火粒子通过隔离壁顶面与其相对面的微小间隙流出到邻接单元,在邻接单元中产生引火效果。
当非最低亮度单元本来不是在前头子帧中应该点亮的单元时,即当多灰度等级数据值为应该只点亮第二个以后的单一或多个子帧的值时,在前头子帧中强制点亮非最低亮度单元,对显示品质产生影响。对此,能够通过减小前头子帧的亮度权重减小影响。实际上,在亮度权重大的子帧中发生地址放电错误的影响比点亮亮度权重小的子帧的影响重大。但是,在本发明的实施方式中,不一定需要使前头子帧的亮度权重为最小权重。因为亮度权重越大,子帧中的显示放电的次数越多,保护膜表面等的电介质表面的活性化越显著,所以减少对以后子帧的地址放电错误的贡献越大。按照这种情况,优选与画面的地址放电特性相应地适当选定前头子帧的亮度权重。
根据本发明,能够在画面中不配置与用于地址放电的要素不同的引火放电特殊化的构成要素而提高寻址的可靠性。

图1是表示本发明的气体放电显示装置的构成的示意图。例示的气体放电显示装置1由具有彩色显示用的画面50的等离子显示面板2和用于驱动的多个电路构成。
在画面50中排列有第一显示电极X、第二显示电极Y和地址电极A。在寻址中将显示电极Y用作扫描电极。显示电极Y和地址电极A构成用于寻址的电极阵列。维持驱动器3与显示电极X连接,扫描驱动器4和维持驱动器5与显示电极Y连接。而且,地址驱动器6与地址电极A连接。
在气体放电显示装置1中,从未图示的TV调谐器或计算机的图像输出装置,与像素传输用的时钟CLK一起输入表示RGB三色的各个的灰度等级值(亮度)的数据R-DF、G-DF、B-DF。帧数据DF由这些数据R-DF、G-DF、B-DF构成。
因为等离子显示面板2是二值发光器件,所以气体放电显示装置1将多灰度等级的帧置换成2灰度等级的多个子帧进行显示。因此,气体放电显示装置1具有将帧数据DF变换成子帧数据的帧分割电路7、暂时存储子帧数据的存储器8、和从存储器8读出规定的子帧数据并发送到地址驱动器6的数据传输电路9。
帧分割电路7将数据R-DF、G-DF、B-DF分别变换成子帧数据。子帧数据是每个单元的1位的数据集合,该各位的值表示是否要点亮相当的1个子帧中的单元,严格地说表示是否要地址放电。在例示中,子帧数为11。下面,将显示顺序中从前头到未尾的子帧顺序地称为SF1、SF2、……SF10、SF11。图示也以此为标准。
数据传输电路9在对各SF1~SF11进行的寻址中,与显示行的扫描同步,以与画面50的色排列匹配的顺序读出3色的子帧数据,顺序地输出到地址驱动器6。
画面50的色排列是图2那样地在水平方向中按照R、B、G的顺序重复配置3色,将相同的色单元排列在垂直方向上。在画面50中,与图像的1个像素对应的单元的组(为了方便起见将其称为像素)51由G(绿)单元53、与其邻接的R(红)单元和B(蓝)单元的共计3个单元构成。
图3表示单元结构的典型例。将显示电极X和显示电极Y配置在前面玻璃基板11上,由电介质层13和保护膜14覆盖。将地址电极A配置在背面玻璃基片21上,由电介质层22覆盖。将区划气体封入空间的隔离壁23间隔地配置在电介质层22上,在隔离壁的排列间隙之间配置有决定单元的发光色的R荧光体24、G荧光体25和B荧光体26。在图中看上去是离开的,但是实际上隔离壁23的顶面和保护膜14是相接的。
寻址是在相当的子帧显示中在应该点亮的单元中引起地址放电的写入形式。在应该点亮的单元中,在显示电极Y与地址电极A之间施加引起地址放电的电压。地址放电形成适量的壁电荷。
在与寻址连续的维持中,在显示电极X和显示电极Y的电极对上施加交流电压。只在应该点亮的单元中引起显示放电,放电气体放出的紫外线激励荧光体24、25、26。被激励的荧光体24、25、26发光。由显示放电引起的发光就是点亮。
具有以上构成的气体放电显示装置1,在多个帧各自的显示的前头SF1的显示中,点亮在构成画面50的单元51中与其对应的帧数据DF的灰度等级值不是指示最低亮度的值(一般为0)的非最低亮度单元,并且强制点亮与非最低亮度单元邻接的至少1个单元。在本实施方式中,由帧分割电路7实现这种特征操作。即,帧分割电路7生成点亮在SF1中非最低亮度单元和与其邻接的单元的子帧数据。
帧分割电路7具有进行从图4的变换表70中表示的帧向子帧的变换的模块和如下面的实施例1~4那样修正对SF1的变换结果的模块。
变换表70使11个SF1~SF11的点亮/非点亮的组合(点亮图案)与例如256灰度等级的帧数据DF的灰度等级值(0~255)中的各个对应。图中括弧内的数值表示亮度的权重。而且,用“1”表示点亮,用“0”表示非点亮。
图4中用圆圈进行强调,变换表70的重要特征是关于除去指示最低亮度的灰度等级值“0”的其它全部灰度等级值“1”~“255”,点亮SF1。这里,例如作为表示灰度等级值“7”的点亮图案,存在点亮SF2~SF4的图案和只点亮SF5的图案。但是,在变换表70中与灰度等级值“7”对应的是点亮SF1、SF3和SF4的图案。这样在变换表70中,关于可以表现的点亮图案为多个的灰度等级值,不采用使SF1为非点亮的图案,而采用点亮SF1的图案。
根据变换表70的变换,在前头SF1的显示中,点亮与灰度等级值“1”~“255”对应的非最低亮度单元。在SF1中的点亮防止灰度等级值“2”~“255”的非最低亮度单元中的SF2或此后的SF3~SF11的地址放电错误。
根据变换表70,因为非最低亮度单元的SF1中的点亮不是用于引火的附加点亮而是表现帧数据DF的灰度等级值的本来的点亮,所以对显示品质没有任何损害。
此外,与1帧对应的子帧数、各子帧的亮度权重、权重排列(子帧的显示顺序)不限于例示。特别是权重排列不限于权重大小的顺序,优选对减少擬似轮廓有效的排列。
[实施例1]
图5表示点亮图案修正的第一例。该例是将SF1作为无彩色(白和黑的单色)的例子。在按照所述图4的变换表70的修正前的子帧(将其称为SF1’)中,在SF1中点亮非最低亮度单元。但是,如果非最低亮度单元周围的单元是最低亮度单元,则非最低亮度单元的点亮成为孤立的点亮。为了消除孤立的点亮,在第一例中如图中的(b)~(h)那样使属于包含非最低亮度单元的像素的3个单元全部点亮。因为3色的单元发光,所以包含非最低亮度单元的像素的发光色是白色。在3个单元为最低亮度单元的像素中,如图中的(a)那样在修正前后不变,在SF1中3个单元成为非点亮。
这种点亮图案修正的第一例能够由图6所示的构成的帧分割电路7a来实现。
帧分割电路7a,由按照变换表70将3色的帧数据R-DF、G-DF、B-DF变换到子帧数据R-SF1’、R-SF2~R-SF11、G-SF1’、G-SF2~G-SF11、B-SF1’、B-SF2~B-SF11的块71、和进行块71输出的子帧数据R-SF1’、G-SF1’、B-SF1’的逻辑和运算的逻辑电路72构成。
将块71输出的SF2~SF11的子帧数据原封不动地写入到存储器8,关于前头的SF1将逻辑电路72的输出3色共同地写入到存储器8中。
此外,既可以由查阅表(LUP)实现块71的功能,也可以由逻辑运算电路实现块71的功能。
[实施例2]
图7表示点亮图案修正的第二例。第二例通过强制点亮由3色中一般能见度低的B(蓝)单元或R(红)单元,消除非最低亮度单元的孤立点亮。因为一般R、G、B的能见度的相对比为3∶6∶1或与其接近的值,所以与强制点亮G(绿)单元的情形比较即便强制点亮B或R单元对显示品质的影响也很小。
从左按照R、G、B顺序排列的色排列中,当注目像素的R单元孤立点亮时,如(b)那样点亮左侧像素的B单元。当G单元孤立点亮时,如(c)那样点亮该注目像素的B单元。当B单元孤立点亮时,如(d)那样点亮右侧像素的R单元。当G、B单元点亮时和R、G单元点亮时,因为不是孤立点亮,所以如(e)、(g)那样不修正点亮图案。当R、B点亮时,如(f)那样点亮左侧像素的B单元和右侧像素的R单元。当在各色的单元中注意并整理这种点亮图案修正时,导出下面的逻辑。
在SF1中注目的像素的R单元点亮是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形,或注目像素的G单元非点亮并且左侧像素的B单元点亮的情形。G单元点亮只是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形。B单元点亮是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形、注目像素的G单元点亮的情形或右侧像素的R单元点亮并且G单元非点亮的情形。
在第二例中,是为了决定B和R单元的SF1的子帧数据,必须注意多个像素的点亮图案的情形。具体地说,图7中的(b)、(d)、(f)的情形与其相当。在这些情形中如图8那样需要参照邻接像素。
如图8那样按照像素的排列顺序处理帧数据。在图示的例子中在像素的各行中按照从左到右的顺序进行处理。所以,例如,在(b)的情形中,在处理第“j-1”个像素的阶段,参照其后的第“j”个像素。此外,在(f)的情形中,在处理第“j+1”个像素的阶段,参照其前面的第“j”个像素。
这种点亮图案修正的第二例能够由图9所示的构成的帧分割电路7b来实现。
帧分割电路7b由与所述例子同样的块71和进行块71输出的子帧数据R-SF1’、G-SF1’、B-SF1’的逻辑运算的逻辑电路73构成。
对于SF2~SF11,将块71输出的子帧数据原封不动地写入到存储器8,对于前头的SF1,将逻辑电路73的不同色的输出写入到存储器8中。
逻辑电路73为了根据邻接的3个像素的数据生成SF1的子帧数据,具有延迟数据的5个双稳态多谐振荡器(flip-flop)。以对于R进行1阶段的数据延迟,对于G和B进行2阶段的数据延迟的方式配置这些双稳态多谐振荡器。各色的第一段的双稳态多谐振荡器的输入与图8的第“j+1”个像素对应,第一段的双稳态多谐振荡器的输出与第“j”个像素对应。第二段的双稳态多谐振荡器的输出与第“j-1”个像素对应。
[实施例3]
图10表示点亮图案修正的第三例。第三例通过强制点亮非最低亮度单元两侧的单元,消除非最低亮度单元的孤立点亮。
当注目像素的R单元孤立点亮时,如(b)那样点亮左侧像素的B单元和注目像素的G单元。当G单元孤立点亮时,如(c)那样点亮注目像素的R、B单元。当B单元孤立点亮时,如(d)那样点亮注目像素的G单元和右侧像素的R单元。当G、B单元点亮时,如(e)那样点亮注目像素的R单元和右侧像素的R单元。当R、B单元点亮时,如(f)那样点亮左侧像素的B单元、注目像素的G单元和右侧像素的R单元。当R、G单元点亮时,如(g)那样点亮左侧像素的B单元和注目像素的B单元。当在各色的单元中注意并整理这种点亮图案修正时,导出下面的逻辑。
在SF1中注目的像素的R单元点亮是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形,注目像素的G单元点亮的情形或左侧像素的B单元点亮的情形。G单元点亮是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形、注目像素的R单元点亮的情形或注目像素的B单元点亮的情形。B单元点亮是该单元为非最低亮度单元的情形、注目像素的G单元点亮的情形或右侧像素的R单元点亮的情形。
这种点亮图案修正的第三例能够由图11所示的构成的帧分割电路7c来实现。帧分割电路7c由与所述例子同样的块71和进行块71输出的子帧数据R-SF1’、G-SF1’、B-SF1’的逻辑运算的逻辑电路74构成。
对于SF2~SF11,将块71输出的子帧数据原封不动地写入到存储器8中,对于前头的SF1,将逻辑电路74的不同色的输出写入到存储器8中。
[实施例4]
图12表示实施例4的画面的色排列。图12的画面50b的色排列是沿水平方向按照R、B、G的顺序重复配置3色,沿垂直方向排列相同的色单元。在画面50b中也与所述例子同样,与图像的1个像素对应的单元的组(为了方便起见将其称为像素)51b由B(蓝)单元、与其邻接的R(红)单元和G(绿)单元53的共计3个单元构成。画面50b的重要特征是在各像素51b中将B单元配置在中央这一点。
图13表示点亮图案修正的第四例。第四例通过强制点亮非最低亮度单元所属的像素的其它单元,消除非最低亮度单元的孤立点亮。根据第四例,因为消除了注目像素中的孤立点亮,所以与强制点亮其它的像素单元的所述第二例和第三例比较,能够得到良好的水平方向的分辨率。
这种点亮图案修正的第三例能够由图14所示的构成的帧分割电路7d来实现。帧分割电路7d由与所述例子同样的块71和进行块71输出的子帧数据R-SF1’、G-SF1’、B-SF1’的逻辑运算的逻辑电路74构成。
对于SF2~SF11,将块71输出的子帧数据原封不动地写入到存储器8。而且,对于G,将块71输出的SF1’的子帧数据作为SF1的子帧数据原封不动地写入到存储器8。此外,对于R和B,将逻辑电路74的输出作为SF1的子帧数据不同色地写入到存储器8。
在以上的实施例中,能够在本发明主旨的范围内适当地变更装置的整体构成、画面的单元结构、色排列、帧分割电路的构成、与1帧对应的子帧数、对于子帧的亮度权重、权重排列等。
本发明能够应用于个人计算机和工作站等的信息处理设备的显示装置、平面型电视、广告和引导信息等的公众显示用的显示装置等,通过放电进行彩色显示的各种显示装置。
Claims (5)
1.一种气体放电显示装置,具有由发光色不同的3个单元构成的像素纵横排列的彩色显示用画面,将多灰度等级的帧置换成2灰度等级的多个子帧,对各子帧进行写入形式的寻址,顺次显示所述多个子帧,其特征在于:
在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,点亮在构成所述画面的单元中与其对应的多灰度等级的数据值不是指示最低亮度的值的非最低亮度单元、且强制点亮与所述非最低亮度单元邻接的至少1个单元。
2.根据权利要求1所述的气体放电显示装置,其特征在于:
在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,强制点亮所述非最低亮度单元所对应的像素的全部单元。
3.根据权利要求1所述的气体放电显示装置,其特征在于:
在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,强制点亮所述非最低亮度单元和与所述非最低亮度单元邻接的两侧单元。
4.根据权利要求3所述的气体放电显示装置,其特征在于:
所述像素由发光色为蓝色的单元、配置在其两侧的发光色为红色的单元和发光色为绿色的单元构成。
5.根据权利要求1所述的气体放电显示装置,其特征在于:
在多个帧各自的显示的前头子帧的显示中,强制点亮所述非最低亮度单元和与所述非最低亮度单元邻接的两侧单元中发光色的能见度一般来说低的单元。
