The trawl fishery off Egyptian Mediterranean waters consists of 1,400 vessels, yielding a total annual landing of approximately 16,000 t. The bogue (Boops boops) is a target species for this fishery, with annual landings oscillating between 1,222 and 3,980 t during the last 18 years. The stock of Boops boops in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters has been assessed using a 3 years length frequency data (2007–2009) from the trawl fishery. The vector of natural mortality by age was calculated from Caddy's formula, using the PROBIOM Excel spreadsheet Abella AJ, Caddy JF, Serena F (Aquat Living Resourc 10:257–269, 1997). The method applied was a tuned virtual population analysis (VPA), applying the Extended Survivor Analysis (XSA) method on the period 2007–2009 and Y/R analysis on the pseudo-cohort 2007–2009. The software used was the VIT program. Results showed that the stock is over exploited, being the fishery operating below the optimal yield level since the current Y/R is lower than the maximum. Results suggest a decreasing trend in the average fishing mortality during the study period by about 40 %.

The  kawakawa Euthynnus affinis, is a highly commercial tuna species in the Red Sea. To assess the  species’ fishery status, the life history and population dynamic parameters have to be identified. A total of 615 length measurement data were randomly collected during the period from February 2021 to May 2023 from the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, Egypt. Life history  characteristics comprising age and growth, mortality, and utilization rate were evaluated based on the length frequency analysis. The average total length was 55.32±6.53 cm for males and 54.95±6.50 cm for females. The "b" values in length-weight relationship were estimated at 2.981 and 2.962 for males and females respectively which designated that E. affinis grows isometrically. The  combined sexes’ growth parameters were computed for as  L∞= 83.64 cm,  K= 0.47 year-1 and  t0= -0.22 year. Total mortality, natural mortality and fishing mortality were valued at 1.413, 0.77 and 0.643 year-1 respectively, with an exploitation rate of 0.455. The  biological reference points Fopt and Flimit were calculated at 0.39 and 0.51 year-1 respectively. The results revealed a good situation for E. affinis stock in the Gulf of Aqaba, since the majority of captured kawakawa had achieved its maturation as indicated by Lc > Lm. The results demonstrating that E. affinis fishery in the Gulf of Aqaba, Egypt has a potential for development nevertheless any recommendations should be consider the  tuna species’ migratory behavior and the multi-species nature of Gulf of Aqaba fisheries in Egypt. Furthermore, for  the species’ sustainable management, there is a need for continuous monitoring of fishing effort and improve fishery data gathering

The population dynamics and reproduction of the streaked gurnard, Chelidonichthys lastoviza (Bonnaterre 1788), has been studied based on collected data between January 2020 and December 2021 from the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. In this study, age, growth, mortality, critical lengths, sex, gonadal maturation and spawning season were determined. A total of 1215 specimens ranged between 7.9 and 26.6cm TL and 5 to 220g total weight were sampled. Total lengths of males ranged from 11.5 to 24.4cm (n= 474), and of females from 11.0 to 26.6cm (n=553). The maximum observed age based on otolith readings was 4 and 5 years for males and females respectively. The length-weight relationship was estimated as W= 0.0093L 3.0487 for males and W= 0.0089L 3.0673 for females indicating an isometric growth. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was Lt= 27.56(1-e-0.433(t+0.62)) for males and Lt= 30.92(1-e-0.299(t+0.92)) for females. The growth performance index was computed as 2.52 (males) and 2.46 (females). Males mature at smaller lengths and younger ages (Lm= 15.2cm, Tm= 0.61 years) than females (Lm=15.8cm, Tm= 0.71 years). The male: female ratio was 1:1.17. The gonado-somatic index (GSI) values defined a protracted spawning season starting in November till February with a peak in January and December for males and females respectively.

Life history parameters and biology of fish like aging, growth, mortality and exploitation levels are essential to evaluate the fishery status of fish stocks. The common bluestripe snapper Lutjanus kasmira in the Shalatein fishing area, Red Sea, Egypt was assessed in this study for the first time. Age was determined based on otolith readings and the maximum life span was five years for males and females. The confidence interval for slope b of the length-weight relationship indicates positive allometric growth (b= 3.128; CI: 3.071-3.185). The von Bertalanffy equation for the growth in length was Lt = 33.76 [1 - e-0.35(t + 1.15)]. The total mortality coefficient Z, natural mortality coefficient M, and fishing mortality coefficient F were estimated at 1.58, 0.59, and 0.99 year-1, respectively. The current exploitation rate E was 0.62 year-1. The critical lengths of the species were 13, 17.97 and 19.70 cm TL for length at recruitment, length at first capture and length at first sexual maturity respectively. The results indicated that the stock of L. kasmira in the Shalatein fishing area is currently overexploited where the current F and E were greatly higher than the optimum ones which produces the maximum sustainable yield. It is recommended that the current fishing pressure should be reduced, in addition to protecting the spawning stock biomass during the spawning season and reducing the natural mortality rates. Also, urgent improvement for the fishhing techniques to protect the young individuals should be applied

izard fishes are the most abundant demersal fishes inhabiting the AGulf-of-Suez. They -wereexploited by-traw! fishery and constkuteabout 31% of the total trawl catch. Age and growth were studied from samples collected during the period from October 2003 to May 2004. Age was determined using otolith's readings. Age and growth rates were different between the two sexes, where females reach greater sizes than males. The age distribution covered age groups I and II for males.and 1 to V for females. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were U= 34.7 cm TL, K = 0.44 year' 1 and Woo = 321.13 g. The instantaneous total natural and fishing mortalities were 1.29, 0.24 and 1.05 year" 1 respectively, while the exploitation ratio was 0.81. The relative yield per recruit analysis confirmed that this species was heavily exploited and the exploitation rate should be decreased by rising the length at first capture. This can be achieved through regulating the mesh sizes and pro...

The European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax at Bardawil lagoon was assessed using Beverton and Holt relative yield per recruit model. A total of 1419 specimens were collected between April 2008 and December 2008 (one fishing season). The maximum life span was eight years for length range of 20 – 71 cm TL. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were K = 0.29 year -1 , L∞ = 76.36 cm and t0 = -0.19 years. The rates of total mortality Z, natural mortality M and fishing mortality F were 1.54, 0.36 and 1.18 year -1 respectively. The exploitation level of this species was higher than the optimum one where the current E was 0.766 indicating that the population of this species is being heavily exploited. Yield per recruit analysis revealed over-fished stock conditions particularly because small fish are effectively unprotected by current minimum size regulations. Based on the analysis it is recommended that the commercial fishery of Bardawil lagoon should be subjected to a total...

The stock assessment of the blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus was made based on monthly length frequency data collected from four landing sites along the Oman coasts on both Arabian and Oman Seas from January, 2011 to May, 2012. Age and growth have been estimated from the length-frequency distribution of up to 1000 specimens. Age composition was determined using Bhattacharya's method and the results showed that the maximum life span of P. pelagicus was about 15 months. Bertalanffy (1938) growth parameters didn't differ significantly between sexes and the obtained values of K were K = 1.85, 1.68 and 1.68 y -1 and CL values were 102.83, 109.57 and 108.46 mm for male, female and sexes combined, respectively. The values of total mortality coefficient (Z), natural mortality coefficient (M) and fishing mortality coefficient (F) were 7.85, 3.15 and 4.7 y -1 . The yield per recruit and SSB analysis showed that the crab stock is being exploited beyond its maximum biological limi...

In the present study a comparison of the otolith morphology of two species of parrotfish, family Scaridae, collected from the Red Sea coast of Egypt, is conducted to identify the most appropriate taxonomic characters that separate these species. Ontogenetic changes in the otoliths of the two scarid fishes become evident. In the otoliths ofChlorurus sordidus, the following characters are comparable in small-sized adult fishes: otolith width, otolith depth, mesial surface shape, lateral surface shape, shape of sulcus acusticus, column, rostrum and size of rostrum. The otoliths of young adults (GI)C. sordidusdiffer from the adult ones in 14 out of the 22 characteristics studied. In the otoliths ofHipposcarus harid, the following characters are comparable in small and large fish: otolith width, otolith depth, mesial and lateral surface shapes, shape of sulcus acusticus, rostrum and size of rostrum.

The lakes’ fisheries play an important role in the Egyptian economy. Egyptian lakes face many challenges such as over-fishing, illegal and destructive fishing methods, human activities and pollution which affected the fish production from it. The lakes’ contribution to the Egyptian fish production decreased from about 50% in 80’s to the only 10% during 2017. Lake Nasser, as one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, plays a significant role in Egyptian fisheries. Its mean annual fish production is about 28,000 ton, this constituted 18% of the total fish harvested from Egyptian lakes. The catch and effort data over 15 years were collected from the lake and analyzed to assess its status and to summerize the main problems facing its development and management. Maximum Sustainable Yield of Nasser lake with special reference to the Nile tilapia, the main species in the lake, is estimated based on catch and effort data from 2003 to 2017. The computer software packages of ASPIC had ...

This paper discusses the first record of the sammara squirrelfish, Neoniphon sammara in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. On April 2020, 17 specimens of this species were recorded in the miscellaneous catch at the Mersa Matruh landing site on the Mediterranean Sea (31.33333° Ν, 27.216665° E), Egypt. The collected specimens represent the first record of N. sammara in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. These specimens have a total length of 15.3 to 21.5 cm, fork length of 13.3 to 18.7 cm, standard length of 12.4 to 17.2 cm, and total weight of 45.3 to 125.1 g. The specimens’ morphometric measurements and meristic counts are described. These new findings increase the number of Lessepsian species from the Egyptian Mediterranean waters to 44 species.

The evaluation and management of fisheries resources requires knowledge of spatial and temporal changes in the habitat-associations of fishes. However, most studies concerning habitat associations of fishes in the shallow areas have been limited to daytime sampling strategies. The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus is one of the most important and high valued species in Bardawil lagoon, Egypt. Long term commercial catch statistics show a significant decrease in the commercial landings of grey mullet in Bardawil lagoon since 1995. By learning more about this species and protecting the habitat upon which it depends, we can ensure that this important valuable fish remains abundant. Population dynamics of grey mullet Mugil cephalus associated with seagrass community were examined. Age was determined based on scale's readings of fish collected in April 2009 to December 2011. Growth parameters, mortality rates, exploitation level as well as the distribution according to seagrass community were studied. The results suggest that differences in fish species richness and abundance are primarily related to habitat structure, the ecological importance and need for protection of such shallow habitats for their crucial role as nurseries for many fish species, as well as the mugilid fishery in Bardawil lagoon is heavily exploited and management measures must be applied to sustain and optimize its yield.

In the past, marine catfish (family Ariidae) did not have any economic importance and were unacceptable as food by Omani people; however, currently, the interest in these species has increased where the majority of the catfish catch is exported earning more than half million Omani Riyal. With the increase of the economic importance of catfish, it is needed to evaluate its fishery status and detect the main challenges which may face the development of this resource. Based on the data collected during the RV " Al Mostaqila I " survey of the Arabian Sea Coast of Oman between August 2007 and September 2008, age and growth, mortality and exploitation rates, biomass and yield per recruit of Tachysurus (Plicofollis, Arius) tenuispinis were studied. In conclusion, for such economically important species additional detailed studies on its biology and life history as well as detecting and conserving the nursery ground are recommended. Moreover, fish biology, population dynamics and fishery characteristics of all trophic levels in the Arabian Sea Coast of Oman should be studied for setting-up an effective management strategy.

Fish are important to humans food sources that can contribute to bridge the food gap of animal protein in Egypt, because they contain a large proportion of animal protein, vitamins and minerals, in addition they contain a high proportion of essential amino acids necessary for the body. Despite the improved fish production in Egypt (≈1,500,000 ton in 2014: 23% from capture fisheries and 77% from cultured fish), the increasing pressure from growing populations and the desire to increase per capita consumption of fish requires us to reorder priorities in order to achieve optimum exploitation of available fish resources. Egypt as the most of the world needs to focus on fisheries, as productive renewable food resources that can contribute to the development or increase national income as well as safe the food for coming generations. This will be achieved by the development of capture fisheries and the expansion of aquaculture production especially mariculture. Many problems are facing the development of our natural and artificial fisheries like overfishing, habitat degradation, climate change, illegal fishing practices, pollution, shortage of fresh water ..etc. The present work, which is a part of graduation project for the first author, will evaluate the current status of our fishery resources and will discuss and analyse the challenges facing the development of fish production in Egypt (natural resources and aquaculture). The different impacts of these challenges will be illustrated, and finally the study will suggest some practical solutions to overcome these challenges and how to mitigate their negative impacts.

Population parameters such as age, growth, mortality and maturity-at-age are crucial parameters for accurate stock assessment and management plans to ensure the sustainable development of fisheries. Also, they are essential for the calculation of spawning stock biomass (SSB) and equilibrium yield as well as biological reference points. Mediterranean horse mackerel is one of the most important component in the purse-seine fishery along the Egyptian Mediterranean coasts especially Alexandria fishing area. Age and growth parameters were estimated for T. mediterraneus, sampled from commercial landings of the purse seine fishery in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters off Alexandria during the period from July 2013 until April 2015. Age and growth study was based on otolith's reading technique. Mortality rates, exploitation ratio, length-at-50% maturity and the length at first capture were also estimated. SSB analysis showed that the effort reduction is strongly recommended such that fishing mortality is reduced by 40% to rebuild spawner biomass to acceptable levels. Per-recruit analysis revealed that F should be reduced by about 30% for mackerel to achieve the maximum Y/R.
