The Doctors Cure learning experience is a 3D immersive game that positions players as protagonists in a virtual world where they must use their understanding of persuasive writing and how to gain evidence from complex texts in their role of investigative reporter. We report on the underlying educational theory, the game itself, and, to justify its impact, share data from a comparison study with 8 7 grade classes assigned the control and 8 assigned the experimental conditions—about 450 total kids, 90% receive free-and-reduced lunch and 87% are Hispanic. While both the game-based intervention group and the control showed statistically significant learning gains on short-answer and multiple-choice items, the intervention group demonstrated statistically significant gains with a large effect size on an open-ended persuasive essay task. Differences in engagement and learning are credited to player agency, affordances of the embedded scaffolds, and the power of consequential outcomes.

In this article the trajectory of an online course in which graduate students collaboratively investigated and shared their personal experiences with respect to adult development is described. For this study, naturalistic inquiry was used to gain a holistic view of this semester-long course and to identify the specific emergent issues that characterized course dynamics. Using open, axial, and, to a lesser degree, selective coding, the following three issues were selected for further discussion: (a) flexibility of course to accommodate participants ; (b) co-construction of meaning through the sharing of personal experiences; and (c) the expression of vulnerability and personal growth. This course provided evidence that on-line courses can support deep learning about content, open sharing about personal experiences, and the development of a sense of camaraderie among participants. Students readily shared their feelings, critically examined course issues, extended their support in help...

In an age of radical innovation, transforming societies, and globalized relationships, our opportunity to unlock human potential has never been more salient. While a variety of approaches have shown promise in this area, achieving this goal at scale has been hampered by thinking and designs that position learning as a process of knowledge transmission and content acquisition. Clearly content has a significant role in increase people potential, but many designs treat context acquisition as necessary and sufficient, neglecting meaningful engagement with one’s life possibilities as an integral part of the learning process. Instead, herein I posit that relevance, use, and ecosystem empowerment are treated as necessary considerations if not the core focus of any innovation designed to unlock human potential. From this anchoring belief, here it is argued that educational designers need to reposition educational innovations less as interventions designed to fix deficient humans, and more a...

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine how three-dimensional (3-D) models of the Solar System supported student development of conceptual understandings of various astronomical phenomena that required a change in frame of reference. In the course described in this study, students worked in teams to design and construct 3-D computer models of the Solar System. Using a qualitative methodological approach we found that the computer modeling supported students in learning about astronomy concepts that ...

This study describes an example of design-based research in which we make theoretical improvements in our understanding, in part based on empirical work, and use these to revise the curriculum and, simultaneously, our evolving theory of the relations between contexts and disciplinary formalisms. Prior to this study, we completed a first cycle of design revisions, restructuring an ecological sciences curriculum

ABSTRACT Two major obstacles to using problem-based learning methods with writing in elementary school classrooms are the time it takes to design the learning environment and the time required for students to interact at their own pace with ill-structured problems used to spur student writing. This study examined whether game elements could be used along with Problem Based Learning (PBL) in a digital learning environment to improve student writing. Results from this study included statistically significant decreases in teacher time spent answering procedural and directional questions, increased voluntary student writing, and improved standardized achievement scores on writing tasks.

In this paper, we examine a teacher-education program that strives to support critical reflective teaching through a supportive community that is rich in fieldwork and performance assessment. Building on earlier efforts that provided more general accounts of community life (Barab, Barnett, & Squire, in press), in this paper examines how the student-teachers experience the program, focusing on how different components of the program contribute to their development as critically reflective teachers. The program we studied, the ...
