Objectives: to validate, for the Portuguese population, the Clinical Decision-Making Nursing Scale© (CDMNS©). Methods: this methodological study involved 496 nursing students who filled in a questionnaire created using sociodemographic and academic data, and the scale to evaluate the making of decisions in nursing. Results: the confirmatory factorial analysis showed that the adjustment of the factorial structure has good quality, being made up by three factors (X2/gl = 2.056; GFI = 0.927; CFI = 0.917; RMSEA = 0.046; RMR = 0.039; SRMR = 0.050). For the scale to be reliable, it had to include only the reliability of the scale required it to be constituted by 23 items, with correlation values that varied from 0.184 and 0.610, and a global Cronbach's Alpha of 0.851, which showed its good reliability. Conclusions: the CDMNS-PT© is valid and reliable, showing a high potential to be used in clinical practice and investigation.

Objective: The main goal was the peer evaluation of the effectiveness of a health education intervention, also seeking the characterization of violent behaviors experienced by teens in intimate relationships. Method: A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was performed with a non-probabilistic sample of 197 teens of both genders without control group. The intervention performed consisted of one peer-run forum theater session about intimate violence in dating relationships of teens. Results: Boys reported being both victims and perpetrators of violent behaviors more frequently than girls. The sample reported more behaviors associated with victimization than perpetration. Girls showed a higher level of knowledge on the topic and this knowledge increased after the intervention. Conclusion: Psychological violence is highly prevalent in dating relationships, particularly in cases of victimization. It seems essential to understand and act upon adolescents’ perceptions about what viol...

Hope performs an important role in how patients and their families cope with suffering and stressful events. To better inform practice and theory on hope, palliative care research should include both patients and their family carers, given their strong interdependence. The aim of this study was to explore how hope is experienced in dyads formed by end-of-life patients and their family carers. In this qualitative study, data were collected by in-depth interviews with seven Portuguese family dyads. Analysis followed a thematic analysis approach. The analysis of the interviews shed light on the importance of hope for all participants, and the challenges involved. Family dyads noted several barriers and facilitators to perceptions of hope. Barriers to hope included limitations imposed by illness, feelings of anguish and helplessness, and poor communication with clinicians. Hope facilitators included supportive others, positive thinking and sense of humour, connection with nature, faith ...

Portugal has limited experience in managing a disaster (Civil Protection, 2013), however it is important that there is concern about disaster preparedness among nurses since the impact on health and economic impact of disasters in the world is increasing (Hammad, Arbon, Gebbie and Hutton, 2012). Methods: The aim of this study was to validate to the Portuguese population the Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Tool (DPET©), a measurement instrument valid and reliable (Khalaileh, Bond, Beckstrand, & Al-Talafha (2010), through translation and cultural adaptation according to International guidelines; the questionnaire was applied to 152 nurses from a Portuguese hospital. In addition to this main objective we intend to determine the preparedness of nurses to act before a disaster situation as well as their training needs. Results: The construct validity of the final 34 itens was determinate through the principal component factor analysis with varimax rotation, with three factors explaining...

Falls are a complex problem, given their multifactorial nature, the comorbidities involved, and due to the dependency of older persons living in nursing homes. Risk, fear of falling, falls themselves, and their recurrence are the main factors behind fragility fractures, lack of independence, and increases in pain prevalence, and other comorbidities in older populations. The objectives of the present quantitative and longitudinal study were: (a) to characterize the cognitive state and fall frequency of older persons living in nursing homes; (b) to analyze the relationship between cognitive status and some fall risk factors; and (c) to associate cognitive decline, gait ability, and muscle strength of the examined institutionalized older persons with fall occurrence and recurrence over 12 months. The participants were 204 older persons who lived in Portuguese nursing homes, and data were collected from January 2019 to February 2020 by consulting medical records and applying the followi...

Abstract Older adults present a decline on their cognitive function. Digital cognitive interventions are related to the maintenance of cognitive function and are associated with better health-related outcomes. This study aims to describe the development process of a multi-domain digital cognitive stimulation program for older adults with cognitive decline. The digital program was developed in four phases: preliminary phase (conceptualization), modeling (experts panel), field test (usability tests), and consensus conference. To ensure software suitability the development process followed also software guidelines for mobile and web applications for older adults. The result was the Digi&Mind digital platform made of a mobile application a backoffice web application. The backoffice web application usability test was conducted with 7 healthcare professionals through the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire System (PSSUQ). The mobile application test was conducted with 4 older adults and 7 professionals through direct observation user testing. Healthcare professionals considered that the system, the information and the interface had quality. Older adults considered the mobile application as appropriate, useful and easy to use, despite of their low digital experience.

Background: The world is facing many socio-demographic changes, such as an increased average life expectancy and the presence of chronic and non-communicable diseases, which in turn, leads to an enhanced dependency on others. Consequently, the demand for informal caregivers has significantly increased during the past few years. Caring for a dependent person is linked to a series of burdens that often leads to physical, psychological and emotional difficulties. Taking into consideration the difficulties faced by informal caregivers, knowing in which areas of functioning they need more guidance may help to relieve their burden. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to better understand the needs and competencies of the informal caregiver when caring for a dependent person in the different self-care domains. Methods: cross-sectional study using face-to-face interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistics alongside non-parametric statistical techniques such as the Mann-Whitney te...

Background: Ageing is frequently associated with multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Frailty and cognitive impairment are other important contributors to the multidimensional aspects affecting older adults’ health status. The present study aimed to explore the adequacy of medication management patterns among home-dwelling older adults in central Portugal by considering their medical conditions, frailty and cognitive status. Reducing numbers of adverse events through effective medication management increases the chances of older adults remaining in their homes for longer periods. Providing patients and caregivers with an overview of potential improvements in this area is very relevant for Portugal’s ageing population. Methods: Within the scope of this cross-sectional observational study, older adults (≥ 65 years) living in the community were assessed via face-to-face interviews. Frailty and cognitive status were assessed using validated tools. Medication management, clinical and sociode...

Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is a technique for breathing support that significantly improves gas exchange and vital signs, reducing intubation and mortality rates. Helmets, unlike facemasks, allow for longer-term treatment and better ventilation, also being more cost-effective. As of today, we have found no reviews addressing this topic. This review aims to identify, map, and describe the characteristics of the use of noninvasive ventilation through helmet interface in critically ill COVID-19 adult patients hospitalized in acute care settings throughout the multiple moments that defined the COVID-19 pandemic. This scoping review will follow the methodology for scoping reviews proposed by JBI. A set of relevant electronic databases will be searched using terms such as COVID-19, helmet, and noninvasive ventilation. Two reviewers will independently perform the study selection regarding their eligibility. Data extraction will be accomplished using a researcher’s developed tool conside...

The Help2Care e-Health platform was developed in order to capacitate informal caregivers with digital, multimedia training materials. Health professionals select these materials according to the needs of the homebound patients under the supervision of these caregivers. In turn, caregiver can then use their smartphones to consult and apply the care procedures illustrated by these materials. In this paper, we present the results of performed usability tests for both web and mobile software applications of the Help2Care platform. These indicate an overall positive outcome, revealing less usable aspects such as the navigation flow in the web application and some design elements in the mobile application. Important written feedback was also collected, which we took into consideration to improve the software features of the platform.

Concerns about weight and body image are common among adolescents since they are particularly vulnerable to body-image dissatisfaction due to the normal physiological, social, and psychological changes they are going through. This study aims to analyse the relationship between food choice motivations and physical activity in body-image perception among adolescents. Twelve to sixteen years old adolescents were recruited from three school districts. The Portuguese version of the Food Choices Questionnaire (FCQ) was used to assess food choice motivators, and the Quantification de l'Activité Physique en Altitude Chez les Enfants was used to assess physical activity and to calculate daily energy expenditure (DEE). Body image perception was measured using Collins' sequence of seven silhouettes. Body image (dis)satisfaction was estimated by the present body shape minus the desired body shape. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to compare groups, and the post-hoc Bonferro...

Falls are the main accident for older adults, with consequences on functionality. Older adults impose restrictions or have restrictions imposed on their activities for fear of new falls. This prospective longitudinal study was conducted with 104 institutionalized older adults during six months with the following goals: to determine the prevalence of falls, to characterize the falls according to place, time, resulting injuries, supervision of the older adult, action performed at the time of the fall, and to relate the occurrence of the fall to the risk of falling, medical diagnoses, number of medications in use, type of medication, degree of dependency, age, and gender. The prevalence of falls was 37.5%, and they happened mostly in the bedroom, while walking after getting up from the bed. Those under risk in the Morse Fall Scale (p=0.034) and on sedatives (p=0.007) face a higher prevalence of falls. This study enables the possibility of making suggestions for practice, training and i...
