Lifestyle modification interventions in in some youth with severe obesity show only marginal effectiveness. As a result of the significant prevalence rate of severe comorbidities and substantial long-term health risks associated with pediatric obesity, bariatric surgery has emerged as an option for adolescents with severe obesity and/or serious weight-related comorbidities who have experienced insufficient responses with other treatments. Weight loss surgery should be conducted in the context of a multidisciplinary program. The purposes of this report were to analyze retrospectively the impact of bariatric surgery in body mass index (BMI) and improvements of comorbidities in severely obese adolescents followed at the Obesity Pediatric Outpatient Clinic of Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte (CHLN) between 2012-2016. Twelve adolescents underwent bariatric procedure during this period. The most prevalent comorbidities were...

Resu...

However, a relation between pubertal maturation and the development of the prefrontal cortex and limbic system was not yet established. The aim of this study was to apply brain magnetic resonance imaging to investigate brain development of teenagers with similar age but distinct timing of pubertal maturation. Methods: We compared the hormonal profiles and brain structure and volume using magnetic resonance imaging of two groups of 14 year-old girls, four with an early pubertal development (group 1) and three with an average pubertal development (group 2). Results: The age at onset of puberty was the only biological variable that distinguished the two groups (p = 0,05). There were no differences regarding global brain volume. However, early-maturers showed a tendency for an increased volume of all subcortical structures except for nucleus accumbens. Conclusion:...

Sample included 3762, 8th and 10th grade public school Portuguese students who participated in the 2002 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC)/World Health Organization (WHO) survey of adolescent health. Factor analysis was used, and two scales were identified as 'healthy weight-control behaviours' (HWCB) and…

The need for effective adolescent weight management programs is of high clinical and public health relevance. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an e-therapeutic platform (Next.Step), aiming to promote weight management skills and the adoption of health-promoting lifestyles. This nonrandomized clinical trial with control group uses a sample of 94 adolescents who attended a paediatric obesity clinic. The experimental group was invited to access the platform Next.Step during 24 weeks, in addition to the standard treatment program. The control group followed the standard treatment protocol and joined a waiting list. Overall, the outcomes of the e-therapeutic program were not substantially better than those obtained with a traditional kind of intervention despite the intervention being associated with an improved health responsibility score (d = 0.51; p = 0.014). Several predictors of the Next.Step effectiveness were found. Conclusion...
