Entering the AI era, globally, for women still the path to leadership in education is not very smooth. The latest research on Women and Leadership in Higher Education indicates that women hold leadership positions in teaching, research, and management roles, but their participation in each area is unequal (del Carmen Meza-Mejia et al., 2023). Currently, less than 30% of researchers globally are women (UNESCO, 2020). Although possessing the necessary skills and experience, they may face significant barriers such as sexual harassment, hiring practices, and work-personal conflicts in their leadership paths (Bowen, 2024). Persistent biases, gender stereotypes, and challenges related to work-life balance
discourage many girls and women from pursuing careers in scholarship and leadership. However, fostering an equitable research environment and promoting gender equality are crucial for sustainable development across all fields. To shift traditional mindsets, it is imperative to promote gender equality, dismantle stereotypes, and encourage women to pursue academic careers.

In response to this need, Frontiers in Education has curated a collection of articles showcasing the contributions of women researchers, educators, and professionals in the field of educational leadership.

Despite progress, female representation and leadership in key roles within this discipline remain insufficient. It is essential to further investigate how equitable education contributes to creating fairer and less biased academic and professional environments worldwide.

This Research Topic emphasizes the diversity of research within educational leadership, presenting advancements in theory, experimentation, and methodology that address pressing issues. It also includes papers that explore the intersectional aspects of gender identities and highlight perspectives from various cultures, religions, races/ethnicities, and abilities.

Student dependence on technology, higher education institution efforts of digitalization in teaching and learning, along with the faculty member hesitancy to adopt innovative technologies all contribute to current challenges in higher education. The focus of this chapter is on exploring the gap between student and faculty perceptions about utilizing technology in teaching and learning, in addition to enlighten institutional roles and strategies to sustain efforts for managing such environments and faculty development. Multiple research methods are used to derive insights. The findings point towards the need to increase knowledge base and to expand faculty development around digital teaching and learning strategies as well as fostering student faculty collaboration to improve learner engagement and performance. As a result of changing roles, the pedagogical methods and technological tools used in digital teaching and learning process should not be a sole decision of the institution, but as a result of a collaborative mindset of institution, faculty, and students.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digital transformation era and the evolution from mentoring to e-mentoring. One of the groups most affected by this situation is the mentees doing graduate studies. In this context, e-mentoring enables the mentee and mentor to carry out their academic study using digital technologies in mutual interaction, regardless of time and geographical space. This study is designed as a case study of the qualitative research methods where the study group consists of graduate students. Five main themes and 14 sub-themes are determined from the interviews with mentees on e-mentoring perceptions. According to the research findings, mentees prefer a two-stage approach in mentee-mentor matching. Mentees emphasize that they favor matching with emerging technologies at the first stage and finalizing the mentor selection process by mentee-mentor face-to-face negotiation in the second stage. Mentees also mention that besides some e-mentoring advantages, there are p...

Abstract A synthesis of existing Industry 4.0 literature depicts that knowledge management and decision making strategies are crucial factors for organizations. This article highlights the need and develops a framework for knowledge management and decision-making style by reviewing existing management literature. This research proposes a framework that supports the relationship between knowledge management enabling factors (i.e., organizational member's collaboration, T-shaped skills, learning and IT-support) and organizational performance, and the mediating effect of knowledge creation process. The article also propose that decision-making style (i.e., intuitive and/or rational) will moderate the relationship between knowledge creation process and organizational performance. A set of propositions that represent an empirically-driven research agenda, and also describe the relationships between the focal variables are presented to enhance audience's understanding within a business context.

The higher education institutions’ mandatory transition to distance education during the COVID-19 outbreak led to restructuring of teaching and learning processes in Turkey. The aim of this research is determining the gains and needs of faculty members in academic activities in Turkey context. A qualitative research method was used and data was collected from 364 faculty members from different demographics, using an open-ended, semi-structured online survey. Three main themes and a total of 40 sub-themes were determined using the content analysis method. Findings showed that faculty broadened their knowledge and experience in distance learning, citing the need to improve their academic and professional development. Some faculty stated very intensive gain of digital literacy skills and competencies and online course materials; while others stated further improvement was needed in these subjects. These findings are important as a means to take the necessary precautions to improve academician’s professional development and students' learning during the continuation of emergency process

This chapter identifies and assesses the role of faculty professional development centers in the future higher education institutions. Faculty professional development centers facilitate transition to digital teaching and learning; this can be affected only through implementing strategies and commensurate infrastructure. They thus provide desired digital knowledge, skill sets, and related competencies for the “next generation of learners.” Implementations in Turkey are surveyed and compared to the international scene. Conclusions are drawn on essential features that may be further enhanced for bettering faculty development facilities primarily in the context of universities in Turkey, and extensions to the international scene.

This article discusses the impact of human-computer interaction in the pedagogical design of open textbooks affordable into a diversity of learning environments. An exploratory study is conducted, wherein an online questionnaire is administered to the second-year master’s degree students from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Studies. The results show that students are aware of the importance of metacognition in developing effective learning strategies. Thus, they use metacognitive strategies when taking notes, doing reflections, and employing mnemonics to enhance understanding. However, despite the current practice of using open didactical materials, students feel that the open textbooks approach needs to be relooked and changed to be more effective; it could be equipped with appropriate learning tools to provide more opportunities for immediate feedback and collaborative assessment. Individualization and collaboration are the key factors in developing metacognitive experie...

Higher educational institutions exert great effort to improve educational quality and effectiveness to cope with digital challenges in education. The impact of COVID-19 on education highlighted the importance of the achievement of sustainability in higher education. To overcome many of these challenges, faculty members need sustained professional development infrastructure embracing individual and institutional dimensions for enhancing educational qualifications. In this study, a quantitative method was employed to explore goals, individual needs, and institutional expectations of faculty in an international university in a developing country. The obtained survey data were analyzed using descriptive and non-parametric statistics (i.e., Kendall's coefficient of concordance, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Mann–Whitney U test). The findings demonstrate that the preferred goals of the faculty are found as developing skills in disciplinary knowledge, teaching and learning, and research. To...

This article theorizes the functional relationship between the human components (i.e., scholars) and non-human components (i.e., structural configurations) of academic domains. It is organized around the following question: in what ways have scholars formed and been formed by the structural configurations of their academic domain? The article uses as a case study the academic domain of education and technology to examine this question. Its authorship approach is innovative, with a worldwide collection of academics (99 authors) collaborating to address the proposed question based on their reflections on daily social and academic practices. This collaboration followed a three-round process of contributions via email. Analysis of these scholars’ reflective accounts was carried out, and a theoretical proposition was established from this analysis. The proposition is of a mutual (yet not necessarily balanced) power (and therefore political) relationship between the human and non-human co...

Technology has many positive effects on education, but negative effects also exist. One of the negative effects is cyberbullying spreading out of school boundaries to the social networks. The increasing popularity of social media among youngsters engenders cyberbullies who exploit the virtual environment besides the usual emails. This distresses the students and adversely affects their families, teachers, and others around them. Although research studies mainly concentrate on prior education, there seems to be a need to investigate the situation in higher education. This study focuses on students studying technology and related disciplines, who are hence likely to be well connected with cyberspace, and explores their awareness about cyberbullying. The findings reveal that female students have significantly less awareness than males. This study will help address some gender issues in cyberbullying.

Over the last two decades, technology infused into education in various creative ways. One of them is using virtual learning environments. This research investigates pre-service teachers’ use of social networks to support their learning in the classroom. It is anticipated that this research may provide an opportunity for educators and researchers to discover a pedagogical use of social networks for teacher education in developing countries by analysing the weaknesses and shortcomings of the matter. Social networks, when used efficiently, could be beneficial for students and teachers. A mix method research was used in discovering students’ use of social networks. The data was collected through preand post-surveys and followed by semi-structured interviews. It is stipulated that social networks can be used as a supportive virtual learning environment where the role of teacher and student can be reversed time to time. Students benefitted from using social networks and were engaged in l...

The increasing trend of using new media technologies and particularly social media (SM) among students provides an advantage for lecturers. Apparently their importance accelerated with the application of social distancing during a pandemic crisis such as the one World has been experiencing since the end of 2019. In this article, the stories of two academics are used expressing experiences, motives and perceptions on benefits and challenges of using SM to support teaching and learning in the classroom. The stories which form the data of the research describe how and why the participants started to use SM, their intended purpose and the ways of use. Besides, reasons, difficulties and positive as well as the negative sides are explored. The findings show that the virtual learning environments provided by SM facilitated the development of students' enthusiasm and interaction with peers assertively, thus increasing the students' participation. Because of emerging technologies, SM platforms surge and plummet quickly; therefore, it is important for institutions to either develop their platform or to subscribe to existing ones for effective knowledge sharing at an institutional level with clear ethical rules.

This article theorizes the functional relationship between the human components (i.e., scholars) and non- human components (i.e., structural configurations) of academic domains. The article uses as a case study the academic domain of education and technology to examine this question. This collaboration followed a three-round process of contributions via email. Analysis of these scholars’ reflective accounts was carried out, and a theoretical proposition was established from this analysis. The proposition is of a mutual (yet not necessarily balanced) power (and therefore political) relationship between the human and non-human constituents of an academic realm, with the two shaping one another. One implication of this proposition is that these non-human elements exist as political ‘actors’, just like their human counterparts, having ‘agency’ – which they exercise over humans. This turns academic domains into political (functional or dysfunctional) ‘battlefields’ wherein both humans and non-humans engage in political activities and actions that form the identity of the academic domain.
