If we use the metaphor of the body for an approach to buildings, in their many and various forms, it is clear that for the greater part of history we have been dealing with entities that have a skeleton and a system of muscles and sinews, and which use some form of plumage for display, but which have lacked for anything that might be called a nervous system. Even now with most homes in the western world fully electrified, connected to a telephone network by wire and a communications network via broadcast terrestrial and satellite providers, the nervous system of the house is almost entirely undeveloped. There are a number of computers embedded in modern appliances and more and more homes include a PC or PC like standalone computer that could act as the 'brain' of an integrated local network but very few houses have moved in this direction. Even the much vaunted Gates' house is more geared to automation of some aspects of the systems in the house than to the overall probl...

Pervasive computing is the third wave in IT, after the PC and the Internet and is based on the use of numerous “invisible”, omni-present, always-on, communicating computers embedded into everyday environments which gather personal information from people and deliver services to them. Whilst this technology promises great benefits, being invisible and autonomous and with its access to the most personal human behaviours, it raises significant new dangers for individuals, city dwellers, cultures and society as a whole.

We outline a vision, methodology and architectural design for creating an ambient environmental intelligence within a ubiquitous computing environment made up of scaleable, networked embedded agent-based artefacts. Embedded-agents are integrated into artefacts, such as domestic appliances or robots to give the artefact some useful amount of intelligence. We describe a practical ubiquitous computing test-bed environment, the Essex intelligent Dormitory (iDorm), which combines a number of heterogeneous artefact based agents and networks. We show novel results where the iDorm was occupied by a user for five and half consecutive days. During this period the iDorm was monitored and controlled by an intelligent and adaptive embedded agent using our fuzzy Incremental Synchronous Learning (ISL) approach. The ISL operates in a life long learning mode realising ambient intelligence in which it learns the user behaviour and controls the room according to his preferences in a personalised and n...

In what follows I will develop an account of Fairbairn's object relations theory as I have understood and developed it, and, apply that theory to an understanding of the threeact opera King Roger, Op. 26 (1926) by Karol Szymanowski. My Fairbairnian approaches to the opera come from my previous work on Fairbairn's object relations theory. In order to fully understand the first of the approaches I employ you may need to read my book Personal Relations Theory (Clarke, 2006), in particular chapters one, five, and six. In order to fully understand the second of the approaches I am using you need to read Thinking Through Fairbairn (Clarke, 2018a), in particular chapters two, three, and four, as well as my paper in the journal Attachment (Clarke, 2018b) on MPD/DID and Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms.

People are going to experience a revolution in the nature and capability of their home environment in a future where domestic electronic artefacts containing embedded computers and network connections opens up the possibility for hundreds of communicating devices cooperating in communities serving the occupant–this is the “Pervasive Computing” vision. This paper describes research in progress that takes the notion of collaborating home artefacts forward in four ways;(a) it introduces a model that promises to change the nature ...

Abstract—The notion of an Intelligent Surface (iSurface) is the topic of several futurists' visions. They predict the use of Smart Matter, nanotechnology with computational ability, as ubiquitous; literally everywhere. It will be sewn into our clothing, or painted on the surfaces of our environments. The futurists suggest that we will use these surfaces as video displays, user interfaces, and composite sensor arrays. The implication is that a coat of paint will be enough to add this functionality to a surface. In this paper we argue that such a vision is ...

This is an attempt to further develop an object relations model of multiple personality disorder (MPD)/dissociative identity disorder (DID), that was first developed in 2011/2012 in the pages of this journal. Paul Finnegan and I used a modified version of Fairbairn's theory of endopsychic structure to develop this model and this paper seeks to broaden that model to include imaginary companions (or friends) and heteronyms. This is an attempt to show how this model might be expanded and at the same time how it might throw some light on the relationship between dissociation and creativity.

Researchers in medicine and psychology have studied emotions and the way they influence human thinking and behaviour for decades. Recently computer scientists have realised the importance of emotions in human interactions with the environment and a considerable amount of research has been directed towards the identification and utilisation of affective information. Particular interest exists in the detection of emotional states with the intention of improving both human-machine interaction and artificial human-like inference models. Emotion detection has also been employed to explore applications that relate emotional states, habits and ambient conditions inside inhabited environments. Valuable information can be obtained by analysing the way affective states that influence behaviour are altered by environmental changes. In this paper an analysis of the properties of four physiological signals employed in emotion recognition is presented. Class separation analysis was used for deter...

Fairbairn's mature model of mind was developed over a period of time and was modified significantly as it developed. In contrast to some sympathetic commentators who have suggested changes, the author has been impressed by the untapped potential of the theory. There are two areas that he feels need clarification and explanation, which are the importance of the preconscious, so neglected in our literature, and its role in psychic growth. By looking closely at the topographic categories and the way that Fairbairn uses them, the author has developed a modified version of Fairbairn's original model, which has a crucial role for a structured preconscious. The preconscious now becomes both a crucial original aspect of the early self and a significant, descriptively unconscious, fulcrum for both psychic change and mature dependence.

It is suggested here that Ian Suttie influenced W. R. D. Fairbairn directly through a 1939 reprint of his The Origins of Love and Hate, a heavily underlined copy of which was found by the author in Fairbairn's library in the University of Edinburgh Library Special Collections in October 2009. Underlined sections of the book are compared with significant aspects of Fairbairn's post-1940 theorizing, and the similarities are argued to be due to Fairbairn's adopting many of the underlying attitudes and ideas that Suttie developed. This leaves Fairbairn's structural theory, which he began to develop as a rational reconstruction of Freud's structural theory as early as 1927, dependent in part on such theory but independent of direct influence by Suttie. It is argued that Suttie's importance vis-à-vis British object relations thinking needs to be reassessed.
