ABSTRACT
The recent restoration works in the bath of El Nogal or Bañuelo (ḥammām al-Ŷawza) in Granada (Spain), have allowed us to deepen our knowledge of this important example of Andalusí architecture. In this paper we present an introduction to the historical analysis of the building, which allows knowing its origin and evolution. We analyze, in a critical sense, the dozen of restoration and conservation interventions carried out during the last century. Finally, we establish conclusions according to the different areas of the building, where we deem it necessary to deepen and reflect on action proposals that could be considered when programming future interventions. In this way, it will be possible to improve the interpretation of a monument, preserved according to the criteria of scientific restoration and incorporated into the architectural heritage of the city of Granada.
The aim of this article is to analyze the origin and evolution of the house in al-Andalus, following the successive historical stages through which the Iberian Peninsula passed from the Islamic conquest at the beginning of the 8th century to the expulsion of the Morisco at the beginning of 17th century. The archaeological excavations made in the last twenty-five years have produced a great advance in the knowledge on this matter. After an introduction on the previous architectural cultures that influenced in the formation of the Islamic one, the attributes of the house with patio are indicated, as it is the most common type employed in the Andalusí house. Next, the general characteristics and the most outstanding examples of the following stages are described: Emiral, Caliphal, Taifa, Almoravid and Almohad, Nasrid and Grenadine Morisco. Finally, a summary is made of the most important characteristics of the house in al-Andalus, as much the urban one, which it is the best well-known one, like the rural one, without forgetting the troglodytic habitat that was significant in the peninsular Southeastern.
The iconographie representations of a city are always a valuable testimony which, when compared and
completed with other documents, permit a more reliable approximation to the morphology and urban structure of a city at a given historical moment. In the case of Santa Fe only one image of exceptional importance
has been preserved, revealing its appearance at the time of its foundation in 1491: a panel from the lower choir
stalls of Toledo Cathedral. The authors demonstrate that this relief, until now erroneously thought to represent the siege of Malaga, actually shows the Real de la Vega and the Real de Santa Fe, with the city of Granada in the background. The information contained in this image provides revealing data concerning the new
city and coincides with contemporary documentary testimonies as well as with other later graphic representations.
Nasrid Granada was conquered by means of a long, debilitating war. In order to culminate this undertaking, throughout 1491 Ferdinand and Isabella installed all of their troops in the plain of Granada, quartering
them in the tents and huts of a military encampment, the Real de la Vega. Forthwith, the construction of a
city-encampment was begun as a winter garrison, the Real de Santa Fe, where some of the innovations in
Spanish fortification work -in transition from the medieval to the modern- were introduced. This text, by utilizing the data contained in the carved relief of the lower choir stalls of Toledo Cathedral in which these
events are represented, attempts to reveal the most significant elements of these two royal camps and how
they were protected.
ABSTRACT
In this paper we present the archeological remains of Islamic Granada that are still hidden under the vaults that cover the River Darro. Some of them have not been known hitherto such as the bridge that is located at the end of Ra vine of Cuesta de Gomérez, or the vestiges of large arthen jars of Dye-works or Tanneries. We also publish, for the first time, photographs of the remains of Puente del Baño de la Corona. In order to complete the study, we analize the bridges located outside the city such as the so called Puente del Aljibillo, with its new photogrammetric survey, and then we refer to the missing bridges.

During the last four decades they have been restored with various criteria, uses and results, according to projects elaborated by eight different teams of architects. It is proposed to compare the criteria applied in the recovery of their original values (spatial, defensive, constructive, documentary, etc.), the reconstruction of disappeared elements, the compatibility of the buildings to adapt to new uses, the difficulty to achieve the conservation of the patinas of their walls and their historical graffiti, etc. Also, the conceptual dilemma between the will to leave the contemporary footprint of the architects in charge of the restoration or to try to show what these fortifications were like when they were built, although respecting the valuable historical contributions produced during their two and a half centuries of life.
placement of three gates, opening outward, is the result of an extremely sophisticated design which
interacts with and grants control over the surrounding areas: the port, the Medieval town and the
countryside. Internally, there was a complex system of control points designed to ensure security.
Particularly important in this regard is the gate of the enclosure surrounding the main residence,
dominated by a tower or qubba, and the annexed bath. The palace, situated at the top of the hill, was
destroyed during the land levelling work carried out in the 1950s. From the Andalusian bath, located
at a slightly lower level, enough remains have been preserved that gives us an understanding of its
basic layout. The remains of both buildings confirm that they were based on Comares Palace in the
Alhambra.
The Albaicín, an intimate view is a journey through time following the history of a place where traces of the last Muslim capital in Spain can still be seen. The Nasrid dynasty contributed greatly to the building of the city of Granada, giving it a beauty which is out of the ordinary. Five centuries later, we still have two clear examples: The Alhambra and a district known as the Albaicín.
This extensive urban complex conceals within its labyrinth-like layout a past and a present where some of the essences of man are blended together. There is a combination of the desire to create spheres that allow him to feel integrated in his beliefs and his ability to live together with his fellow men.
In this intimate itinerary all eyes are on the little squares and narrow alleys with their irregular design, in the variety of religious and civil architecture, as well as on the old Moorish dwellings that have miraculously endured the passing of time. We are also attracted by the life of the inhabitants of this district, which in spite of the course of time, still maintains its peculiar characteristics, an infrequent idiosyncrasy and one that has a magic appeal for the visitors who are able to appreciate both its surprising views and the special history of the district.
