This volume offers rare perspectives examining the influence of media technology on learning patterns and behaviours among today’s youth in Uganda. The various contributions from international scholars discuss general introductory aspects dealing with the fabric and structure of Uganda’s society and educational institutions, and how they are affected by new media technology and innovations.

Next to outlining the increasing challenge to unify traditional patterns and the adaptation of media-based practices that modern societies are built upon, the book offers detailed insight into practical solutions that serve as inspiring examples of how to successfully bridge the gap between the two.

While titles on youth and media tend to focus on a Western perspective, the proposed volume enables a closer look at things in a country and a region often neglected by researchers. The work offers a specific examination of media and education provided by national and international scholars.

The Sufi tradition remains one of the most mysterious and least understood systems of self-realization. This book demystifies the practice of the sohbet―an ad hoc discourse―as the central instructional tool in the globally influential Naqshbandi-Haqqani Order. It approaches the practice using categories of improvised music to establish a framework for analyzation. Its ritualized formal structure, illustrated via selected talks of Shaykh Nazim Adil al-Haqqani, discloses the underlying―and assumingly primary―function to provoke prolonged states of raised awareness in listeners and condition their sympathetic nervous system. In an extensive discussion based on several years of field research in Cyprus, the book relates this intention to similar practices in other traditional knowledge systems by proposing psychophysical interpretations based on psychology, biochemistry, neuroscience, or quantum physics. It will appeal to scholars and students of Sufism, Islamic studies, and comparative religion, as well as those interested in performance studies and improvised music, interpersonal communication, and education.

This book is discussing patterns of radical religious thought in popular forms of Black music. The consistent influence of the Five Percent Nation on Rap music as one of the most esoteric groups among the manifold Black Muslim movements has already gained scholarly attention. However, it shares more than a strong pattern of reversed racism with the Bobo Shanti Order, the most rigid branch of the Rastafarian faith, globally popularized by Dancehall-Reggae artists like Sizzla or Capleton. Authentic devotion or calculated marketing? Apart from providing a possible answer to this question, the historical shift of Bobo adherents from shunned extremists to firmly anchored personifications of authenticity in mainstream Rastafarian culture is being emphasized. A multi-layered comparative case study attempts to shed light on the re-contextualization of language as well as expressed dogmatic perceptions and symbolism, attitude towards other religious groups and aspects of ethnic discrimination. Further analysis includes the visibility of artists and their references to practical and moral issues directly derived from two obscure ideologies that managed to conquer airwaves and concert halls.

"From Charlie Hebdo to Black Lives Matter, citizen journalism to Aljazeera, gangsta rap to soap operas, this book accurately carries stimulating and intellectually-engaging perspectives that capture the true face of international media and culture studies in an age of continuous disruption. Martin A.M. Gansinger and Ayman Kole deserve more than just praises for giving us this must-read book that anyone interested in contemporary mediacentric developments around the globe, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa will find richly rewarding."

“This compilation of essays addresses the ethical and academic implications of many global trends, using up-to-date examples. These current discussions, in my view, will be welcomed worldwide.”

“As a professor of media studies in the US, I have long wanted a book like this one. We live in a globalized media landscape, where trends in one country affect trends in another; it is increasingly important for students to understand the impact the media have worldwide. In this new book, the authors have their finger on the pulse of major issues in media: they offer new perspectives in the ongoing debate about whether viewing violent media affects our behavior; they analyze cultural and political perspectives in video games; and they explore the use of social media by movements such as Black Lives Matter. But they also offer important insights into media effects and controversies in countries like Morocco, Turkey, France, and China; information that was previously not widely available. I especially like the user-friendly style: while each chapter is thorough and scholarly, the authors write in a manner that will be interesting (and understandable) for students. And this book will also be a useful resource for professors.”

This book was compiled in order to connect the dots between past and present expressions of significant phenomena in media and culture. It attempts to provide a “big picture” perspective on how contemporary relevant manifestations of the entertainment industry, artistic expression, mediated civic engagement, technological infrastructure, or automated information control evolved from subversive surroundings, niche markets, and underestimated potentials to shaping forces in todays’ society.

In the age of iDeology – in which individual access and participation to technology is about to replace the rich texture of religion, culture, tradition and political convictions – the social impact of media discourse only magnifies. This volume is an attempt to explore the influence of ever-available communication content on the minds and behavior of a population that has made the permanent and often obsessive use of communication technology a defining element of social orientation. Unlike the many accounts that focus on the remarkably redefined patterns in the context of Western society – ranging from twittering Presidents to the emerging populist movements all over Europe – this volume portrays the situation from the frequently neglected perspective of the global periphery. As opposed to simply transfer and measure perspectives taken from a Western point of view, the clear intention of this volume is to provide ample space for the sincere and explorative consideration of local characteristics and settings of the different social, cultural and political contexts and therefore contribute to providing the ground for future research.

The purpose of this volume is to broadly discuss the media’s responsibility to provide discursive contributions to the ethical and moral challenges of our times. At the crossroads of intellectual progress and profit-orientation, questionable concentration tendencies in the academic publishing industry pose a threat to the reputation and integrity of higher education. The actions of whistleblowers like Edward Snowden have radically changed our perception of privacy, stiring debates about the ethical and moral dilemma attached to the disclosures. Islam and religion continue to rank as urgent topics in the news – with the most influential contributors to thje public discourse often belonging to ideologically influenced Western voices. One century after the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, Russia is still negotiating how to categorize these events – which has recently beenpointed out in a controversial TV show. The example of Nigeria makes clear that insecurity and national development go hand in hand with responsible press coverage while the low self-perception of the Belarusian film industry is due partly to its depiction in the country’s only cinematographic publication.

This volume compiles international contributions that explore the potential risks and chances coming along with the wide-scale migration of society into digital space. Suggesting a shift of paradigm from Spiral of Silence to Nexus of Noise, the opening chapter provides an overview on systematic approaches and mechanisms of manipulation – ranging from populist political players to Cambridge Analytica. After a discussion of the the juxtaposition effects of social media use on social environments, the efficient instrumentalization of Twitter by Turkish politicans in the course of the US-decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is being analyzed. Following a case study of Instagram, Black Lives Matter and racism is a research about the impact of online pornography on the academic performance of university students. Another chapter is pointing out the potential of online tools for the successful relaunch of shadow brands. The closing section of the book deals with the role of social media on the opinion formation about the Euromaidan movement during the Ukrainian revolution and offers a comparative study touching on Russian and Western depictions of political documentaries in the 2000s.

This presumption is explained in more detail within the framework of an introductory approach to collective improvisation as a process of relationship characterized by interactivity and synchronicity. After a discussion of improvisational action in music with regard to theoretical, historical and psychological aspects, the various developmental stages of free or collective improvisation that emerged from free jazz in the 1960s will be presented. Subsequently, the collective improvisation will be discussed with reference to the concept of the ideal speech situation and located in an intercultural context. The sublimation of idiomatic, culturally shaped forms of expression demanded by musicians like Derek Bailey will be explained by the individual development of a characteristic sound language on the instrument as equalizing for the asymmetrically shaped dialogue forms of this situation.

Taking the metaphor of Black CNN as a starting point, the project attempts to analyze the potential of the musical form of expression of hip hop as a communication structure of the black minority in the USA. After a historical-cultural explanation, which deals with the tradition of reflecting social and political aspects in the different musical expressions of the Black ethnic group in the USA, and which already shows the importance of this form of expression in the context of an internal colonialsm, those socio-demographic developments are made comprehensible as a central point of criticism in the verbal articulations of hip hop. Against the theoretical background of cultural citizenship - a concept for determining cultural participation in the media society - 25 text samples found in hip hop releases from 1982 to 2004 will be examined for their correspondence with indicators that can be derived from political and social functions attributed to the media.

This chapter provides an insight into the descendants of enslaved
Africans, their ties to Islamic culture and religion. This will mainly be
achieved by shedding light on specific experiences of Africans during
the Ottoman Empire and in modern-day Turkey, as well as including
the influence of religion on post-slavery identity struggles among Black
Americans. As such, the missing incorporation of undesirable past
experiences into school curriculums and their consistent media
coverage alike bears the potential to cause problematic social and
personal identity conceptions among young Turks of African descent.

The chapter deals with the contrast between defining aspects of religious rigidity, a socio-historically derived counter-narrative, and anti-consumerism in Rastafarian philosophy and culture on one hand and the universal message and commercial success of the music on the other.

After discussing the status of the genre as part of Jamaican national culture, the inherent socio-political claim of Reggae and Rastafarian culture are put in context with the conflicting claims of superiority and non-partiality that can frequently be found in the music.

Along the lines of religious doctrines in Rastafarian culture and the attempted spiritual transcendence of racism the chapter closes with an exploration of the genre's signature tropes of social justice and anti-materialism, also considering the less strictly defined identity-constructions of recent artists linked to the Reggae Revival movement.

"Martin A. M. Gansinger's study of Reggae and class employs Rastafarianism as a key ingredient of both concepts. Gansinger contends that Rastafarianism offers a "spirituality-based consciousness" that lends itself to an egalitarian-driven social consciousness. Reggae's strong social, political and culture capital as a philosophy of liberation owes much to Rastafarianism, which, for all its contradictions, embodied in categories such as the "righteous" and the "wicked", as well as its segregationalist and patriarchal past, offers a means through which the music advances a socially transformative spirituality that may play a part in the rediscovery of a truly social consciousness."

Reggae's strong social, political and culture capital as a philosophy of liberation owes much to Rastafarianism, which, for all its contradictions, embodied in categories such as the "righteous" and the "wicked", as well as its segregationalist and patriarchal past, offers a means through which the music advances a socially transformative spirituality that may play a part in the rediscovery of a truly social consciousness." Abstract: This article is discussing the possibilities of new media technologies in the context of transmitting ancient spiritual traditions in various cultural and religious backgrounds. The use of internet as a means to preserve the orally transmitted knowledge of the Aboriginals and Maoris, and in doing so transferring their cultural heritage to their younger generations and interest groups. Following is an extended case study of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order and its specific compatibility of a traditional orientation towards spiritual work among people rather than monastic seclusion and its recent application of digital media resources. Therefore, new technology is being discussed as a logical extension, not without attention being drawn to possible limitations, however.

Abstract: The following article is the attempt of an historically oriented analysis focused on the role of Nigerian music as a cultural hub for the export of African cultural influences into the Black diaspora in the United States and its anticipation by the Free Jazz/Avantgarde-scene as well as the import of key-values related to the Black Power-movement to the African continent. The aim is to demonstrate the leading role and international impact of Nigerian cultural expression among sub-Saharan African nation states and its specific ability to absorb and incorporate elements of Western culture. After a short discussion of African influences on Jazz-music in general and the socio-political, cultural, and artistic context in which Free Jazz emerged, examples for the articulation of African consciousness among influencing key figures such as saxophonist John Coltrane or the Art Ensemble of Chicago are being presented. Furthermore, the personal and ideological links between the Free Jazz-scene and the Black Power-movement - especially the Black Panther Party - are made transparent. In a second step the central influence of the Nigerian drum-pioneer Babatunde Olatunji on the Africanization of US-Jazz-musicians, his personal and creative impact on John Coltrane, as well as on the Black Power-movement is being highlighted. On the other hand, Coltrane, Free Jazz, and the Black Panther Party are being portrayed as a central creative and ideological turn in the career and work of Fela Kuti towards political activism and his efforts to implement and apply the Africa-inspired Black Power-struggle of the US on the African continent in order to oppose post-colonial forms of oppression.

The purpose of this article is to provide viewpoints and discussion of a variety of potentially problematic aspects and mechanisms regarding academic publishing in relation to economical and ethical issues. Starting with the establishment of wide-scale internet access in the beginning of the 21st century, a considerable increase of plagiarism and more sophisticated forms of academic fraud, expanded infrastructure of academic publication channels and forms, combined with strong tendencies of concentration in terms of research disciplines and outlets have now led to certain undesirable developments. Next to the general business model operating according to these parameters, the purpose, reliability and authenticity of circulated rankings and grading systems of academic publishers as well as citation indexes will be critically discussed in relation to new open access possibilities that start to question the outdated structures of the established system.

Abstract: Lagos-based Raypower Radio is one of the very few stations in Nigeria that is offering broadcasts in Nigerian local languages and tribal dialects. Due to the pre-dominant use of English in the education system native Nigerian languages tend to be considered as inferior, especially among social circles of higher education and wealthy background. This research attempts to analyse the influence of parental attitude towards tribal dialects as a barrier or motivational source for Nigerian youth in terms of the use and acquisition of local languages and the reception of radio stations offering local content.

Gender equality and political democracy are important factors that concern
almost every area of note in our modern era. Therefore, the notion that social media is to be considered as the mouthpiece of freedom of speech has achieved a status of powerful magnitude. It has also come to acceptance that the social media platforms have assumed the role of expressing opinions that could be barred from the established media arenas, thus making them ideal in terms of providing an outlet for the voice of the voiceless, so to speak. Yet, governments are able to block these platforms on a national scale.

This research study is aimed at examining the compatibility of improvised music and the initial quality of immediacy found in early radio broadcasting. It also provides thoughts on how to engage audiences with music that is difficult to access in the form of a case study, namely the format Frei um Zwei on Austria's Radio Orange 94.0. When I open up the mike every Sunday afternoon, there is no score. What I do is listen-and play with listening. As a musician, I follow music which tickles the ear's subtlety, probes its capacity for connection, and celebrates its great good-humored spontaneity. This is the ground of my weekly improvisation: music that comes out of nowhere but is connected everywhere. But not since Mort Subotnick's Buchla-connected cello have I experienced such a multi-dimensional instrumentality as live radio space. Here, one has the possibility of mixing what is, and what could be, into a new score. One that issues from the music but travels, sometimes quicksilver, sometimes by foot, over time and into adjacent territories that can only be discovered by listening, live.

Taking the metaphor of Black CNN as a starting point, which has always been a metaphor, the project attempts to analyze the potential of the musical form of expression of hip hop as a communication structure of the black minority in the USA. After a historical-cultural explanation, which deals with the tradition of reflecting social and political aspects in the different musical expressions of the Black ethnic group in the USA, and which already begins to show the importance of this form of expression in the context of an internal colonialsm, those socio-demographic developments are made comprehensible which are reflected as a central point of criticism in the verbal articulations of hip hop. Against the theoretical background of cultural citizenship - a concept for determining cultural participation in the media society - 25 text examples found in hip hop publications from 1982 to 2004 will be examined for their correspondence with indicators that can be derived from political and ...

This paper discusses the influence and transformation of the Bobo Shanti Rasta Mansion in Jamaican popular music. While affiliates of the strict denomination of the Rastafarian faith got labeled as militant radicals by more moderate Rasta branches and mainstream artists alike in the 1990s, a new generation of artistes has carefully deconstructed the Bobo identity, using portions to underline cultural authenticity. The transformative nature of this process is demonstrated in the form of a descriptive historical discussion and representative samples of lyrical content.

New media are increasingly providing spaces and opportunities for media houses and activist groups engaged in socio-political reform in Africa. In Nigeria, social media are becoming platforms for communicating messages of resistance against oppressive political and exploitative economic power structures. This study analyzed Ogas at the top (OATT), an online puppetry series by Buni TV, as a way of examining new platforms and message content in Nigeria’s rapidly changing media sphere. Relying on semiotics and critical discourse analysis perspectives, the study analyzed select episodes of the series, to gauge how producers constructed powerful visual and linguistic messages to boldly satirize social injustices perpetrated by Nigeria’s political elites.

While US-Hip Hop has been attested considerable influence of the controversial Black supremacy movement Five Percent Nation, a similar pattern can be observed with the rigid Rastafarian doctrine of the Bobo Shanti Order and Jamaican Dancehall-Reggae. Considering the commercial relevance and global popularity of both musical styles, this study attempted to shed light on the question if either artists are using controversy for promotional agendas or it is them being used for missionary purposes in turn. A multi-layerd cross-case study based on Critical Discourse Analysis as well as ethnographic research has been conducted to determine the degree and direction of Bobo Shanti-representations in Jamaican Dancehall-Reggae as compared to Five Percenter Rap in the US, focusing on visual representations, declared affiliations as well as claims of moral superiority and gender roles in reference to doctrinal sources

This study is aiming at analyzing extemporaneous methods of instructional speech in the context of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order and its parallels with improvised music as well as potential for modern educational purposes. Focusing on a processual analysis covering the flow of events in the communication and its environment, the work is using approaches applied in performance studies as well as improvised music, as well as cognitive science and psychological perspectives concerned with the mechanisms of the subconsciousness. Field research data collected at the Naqshbandi lodge in Lefke/Cyprus as well as a considerable amount of recorded speech acts serve as material for the conducted qualitative content analysis.

The musical practice of collective improvisation as an analogy to the Habermas' Ideal Speech Situation and its potential for Intercultural Communication The musical method of collective improvisation expresses a conception of playing whose democratic-emancipatory basic attitude suggests comparisons with the concept of the ideal speech situation formulated by Jürgen Habermas. In a first step, this presumption is explored in more detail by defining collective improvisation as a process of relationship characterized by interactivity and synchronicity. After a discussion of improvisational practices in music that reflects on theoretical, historical and psychological aspects, a short overview on the various developmental stages of free or collective improvisation that emerged from free jazz in the 1960s will be provided. Subsequently, the practice of collective improvisation will be put in context with the concept of the ideal speech situation and projected into an intercultural context. The sublimation of idiomatic, culturally shaped forms of expression demanded by musicians like Derek Bailey as well as the individual development of a characteristic sonic language by musicians like Evan Parker will be analyzed in regard to their potential as facilitating and equalizing aspects in the context of intercultural settings.

In the form of an analysis in the moment along the lines of spontaneity, intuition, flexibility, and reactivity that encompass and define the communicative processes in the artforms of Hip Hop, the culture's hidden and constituting "element of surprise" shall be approached in an appropriate manner. The purpose of the contribution is to address the interdependent relation between emptiness and form, the transcendence of space and time, and Hip Hop as an artistic outburst of expression and creativity that almost naturally had to emerge from out of a vacuum of socioeconomic possibilities. Largely being propelled by "the momentum of the moment" as a driving force for inventive creativity, the transcient character of the culture is being explored as a possible factor for existing resentment in academic circles. It is intended to juxtapose the historic tradition of literate societies to minimize oral culture with the vast body of concepts and practices in traditional knowledge systems such as Sufism-"the path to non-existence"-or the Taoist "art of not-doing" that ultimately consider stillness as the source of all motion and emptiness as a precondition for knowing. Hence, the intended contribution aims at discussing and demonstrating the potential of the impromptu train-of-thought as a base for innovative vehicles of communication in educational contexts. As such, the envisioned form of presentation is intended to avoid one-way-communication and encourage audience participation in order to maximize the momentum, make use of the collective potential and simply serve as a way to "kick off the cypher".

Improviser's Experience: Knowledge, Methodology, Communication.
In association with the Royal Musical Association, and the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Research into New Music and Research Centre for Performance Practices.
Date: April 2-3, 2020

Improvisation presents epistemological challenges to the artistic researcher. It's hard to explain exactly what we're doing when we improvise; the experience of spontaneous music-making can seem to be consciously directed only in part. To the extent that improvised musical performance relies on embodied or procedural knowledge, it can be elusive and resistant to being fully known, let alone pinned down in words. As artistic researchers investigating the practices and procedures of improvisation, how should we respond? What kinds of knowledge about improvisation are obtainable? Which methods are most suited to the task? And how can we manufacture interfaces which enable the wider scholarly community-and the world beyond-to gain meaningful access to experiences of improvised performance? How can we write and talk about improvisation effectively?

While early forms of Black musical expression – such as Gospel – already showed strong ties to religion as manifested by Christianity at that time, Islam-inspired movements such as the Moorish Science Temple, the Ahmadiyya or the Nation of Islam had a strong influence on many Jazz musicians in the 1950s and 1960s. A pattern strongly linked to Black Nationalism that continued with the emerge of Hip Hop in the 1980s. The consistent influence of the Five Percent Nation as one of the most esoteric groups among the manifold Black Muslim movements has already gained scholarly attention, with numerous influential artists such as Brand Nubian, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes or Erykah Badu consistently expressing their affiliation in their artistic output. In a cross-referential manner, such incorporation of Islam-inspired thought and terminology in popular culture can be viewed as a strong impulse for the continuous construction and negotiation of Muslim identitiy. Given its ecclectic nature it bears the potential to serve as initial entry point to the Muslim faith as well as spark anticipations of cultural resistance. Next to adding a re-contextualized interpretation of Orthodox Islam to public discourse that increases the perceived visibility of the religion it might be seen as a source of inspiration for Muslim artists that fully dedicate their output to their religious identities. This multi-layered case study attempts to shed light on the re-contextualization of language and symbolism that served as a Trojan horse for the introduction of orthodox Islam to one of the most popular expressions of Western culture.

Abstract: This paper attempts to discuss the consensual consolidation of the Bobo Shanti Rasta Mansion in recent examples of Jamaican popular music. Early protagonists like Capleton, Sizzla or Junior Reid who strongly claimed affiliation with the rather strict denomination of the Rastafarian philosophy got labeled as militant radicals by more moderate branches and mainstream artists alike, mainly for its rigid, religiously justified view on lifestyle and gender. However, a new generation of multi-facetted, mainstream-oriented musicians such as Kabaka Pyramid or Bugle has carefully deconstructed the Bobo identity, using portions to underline their cultural authenticity with what seems to have become accepted as a rather undisputed and consensual element of the Rastafarian tradition and identity. A change, that is being demonstrated in the course of a descriptive discussion and representative samples of content.

The paper will be presented at the Reggae Innovation and Sound System Culture International Conference, held on the 4th and 5th of April and organized by Birmingham City University in cooperation with The University of the West Indies. Hope to see you there...

The aim of this study is to explore the representation of Pashtuns in Pashtu classic (before 1985) and modern (after 2000) movies and what is the difference of the portrayal of these movies and Pashtun literature. In particular, this study investigated in which time frame the depiction of Pashtun is positive and similar to their academic descriptions. A mixed methods approach consisting of qualitative case study, content analysis and comparative semiotic analysis was used to examine the content of the movies. Eighty positive leading characters were purposely selected from the sample (ten classic and ten modern Pashtu movies) to compare with academic literature on Pashtun culture.

Whether your Integrative Digital Campaign is built on pun or precision, hence, the magic of a compelling content idea or the straight-up math of analytical tools, the underlying principle is "the more, the merrier". The aim of this class is to supply you with the necessities to provide audiences with an overall brand-experience via the effective combination of different channels that can be used to significantly boost the online presence of a brand or organization. You will learn how to plan, develop, and evaluate a cohesive digital marketing approach based on customer-centricity and the strategically bundled potential of paid, earned, and owned channels. Tactically coordinated tools such as pay-per-click, digital display advertising, local listings, search engine optimization, social media or mobile marketing will provide you with the means to craft strong and coherent conceptual campaigns that create attention even for brand values that are difficult to communicate.

Who owns the media we are using and what is done to control its content? In this course we will look at what led to the highly interconnected communication system we are all part of.  And even more so, what kind of consequences are we supposed to expect from that situation in the near future? In order to answer that question, we go back to the past and look at the social, economic, political and technological developments that brought us to present issues – like TikTok’s deal with the US and the EU’s new Digital Services Act. We will examine examples in popular culture – from Bollywood movies and Turkish soap operas, to K-Pop, Jamaican Reggae or Moroccan Hip Hop – that negotiate between local identities and global perspectives and can even be used as a means of public diplomacy. As you might have noticed, with the world moving closer together, questions of cultural identity as well as national sovereignty arise. Who is responsible for what we see on social media channels like youtube and facebook? An algorithm? The state, like in China? Or that guy in a hoodie from Silicon valley – who is outsourcing the psychologically demanding task of filtering inappropriate content to cheap labor in India and the Philippines? After completing this course, you will be able to grasp these new structures of communication in its complexity, understand the challenges in regulating them, and estimate their tremendous influence on every single one of us.

Technically speaking, sunny side up doesn't only work for fried eggs. But the common depiction of center and periphery, of the heaved up industrialized hemisphere and the developing countries located at the bottom of the globe perfectly reflects and re-enforces historically grown distributions of power in the areas of politics, economy-and communication. In this course we will look at the developments that led to the highly interconnected but rather unbalanced media system we are dealing with today. However, while localized phenomena such as the Bollywood movie industry, Turkish soap operas, K-Pop, Jamaican Reggae, or Norwegian Black Metal managed to exercise lasting influence on global popular culture and even turned into veritable tools of public diplomacy, a few tech corporations from Silicon Valley basically monopolized the digital communication infrastructure. Next to discussing related questions regarding media participation, cultural appropriation, identity construction, and cultural sensitivity, the focus will be on recently introduced legal actions like Australia's taxing of Google and Facebook for displaying local news content and the EU's Digital Services Act. Both serve to illustrate the growing potential for conflict between global corporations and national sovereignty. Other questions include the regulation of digital space regarding policies concerning hate speech, cyber-mobbing, copyright violation, security, and privacy rights. After completing this course, you will be able to grasp these new structures of communication in its complexity, understand the challenges in regulating them, and estimate their tremendous influence on every single one of us.

Whether it's Big Brother, the Chinese Communist Party, or the generation of slim-fit-smarties à la Macron and Trudeau-media institutions have been proven again and again to be crucial agents for exercising an influence on society. In this class, we will cover a range of areas reaching from the use of propaganda to political spin-doctoring, advertising, or education to discuss the fundamental role of mediated communication in the shaping of societal habits and attitudes. Next to traditional mass media and the role of community outlets, digital structures as well as channels of artistic expression, such as film, music, or literature will be analyzed in the form of case studies. Besides exploring current issues such as the use of media technology as a tool for social engineering, as pioneered in China, students are encouraged to focus on specific aspects of media and society in Morocco and the Arab world.

The aim of this class is to set your pens on fire. Or your keys respectively. While some practitioners started to question the importance of Advanced Writing modules in the PR curriculum following the rise of digital media, quite the opposite is true. Not only does each specific channel require its very own format and tone, but with the strategic orientation towards content marketing and brand journalism the typical PR practitioner probably spends more time producing written content than ever before. Well, if content is king…then polished writing skills are the ace up your sleeve that will make you stand out from the crowd. Hence, in this course we will practice and experiment with a wide range of different formats and styles that go way beyond the classical repertoire of press release, media alerts, speeches, fact sheets, memorandum, company histories or annual reports. Next to advertorials and feature stories we will focus on improving your abilities to compose engaging blog articles and posts, wiki entries, listicles, or whitepapers as effective tools based on the paradigm of PR as a strategic management discipline. Since practice makes perfect, this is a handson class that will make you realize your improvements over the course of time. By following the formula of "meaningful content = research, preparation, writing and editing" you will be equipped with the necessary confidence and convincing writing samples for your portfolio upon completion of the course.

“Until the rise of digital and social channels, our engagement with the media was, for some PRs, through a hat-trick of activity – breakfast with journalists, lunch with journalists, and/or dinner with journalists.” (Julio Romo)
You guys are quite lucky do your Master now and not ten years ago – because the PR game has been turned upside down with the arrival of digital media. What used to be a mutually beneficial arrangement between an exclusive circle of PR practitioners and journalists has been swept away by a consumer revolution that cut out the courted middlemen thanks to a wide range of digital media channels. This dramatic change not only highlights content production and message design on the PR skills list, but also provides us with a wide range of new possibilities for audience research, market intelligence and measurement. In this course we will discuss the practical application of cost-friendly and effective techniques such as real-time marketing, thought leadership or direct-to-customer news releases as a tool for Search Engine Optimization. After completing the course, you will be able to choose from a wide range of techniques and channels to either generate media coverage or engage your defined buyer personas and drive them to the point-of-action.

The course will take you all the way through the reputation risk life cycle of prediction, prevention, preparation, resolution, response, and recovery. However, the job of a good problem solver starts way before the actual impact. Hence, we will discuss the importance of scanning the horizon for upcoming issues that might affect one's reputation and evaluate the development of ongoing social and political debates. Next, we will look at internal structures, processes, functions, and committees that need to be established in order to ensure business continuity and efficient crisis management-offline and on social media. Besides, soft interventions such as corporate citizenship that foster a culture of reputation risk consideration throughout all functions of the operation are being introduced. After being able to distinguish between variables such as externally driven issues and internal incidents, you will learn to plan a crisis management exercise and perform a complex reputation risk assessment. Throughout the course, case studies will be used to demonstrate the inherent risks-and opportunities-a reputational crisis presents to the organization.

The global village, 2021. Chronically multitasked users with attention spans lower than a goldfish are desperately hiding behind firewalls and anti-spam filters, besieged by merciless recommendation engines and unexpectedly ambushed by pop-up ads. Waving flash banners signal the victory of the algorithmic army. This is a time to use content as strategy. Content is king, content is key, content is the way to conquer and engage with advertising-aversive audiences and build long-term relations with prospective stakeholders and clients. In this class, we will discuss and practice the various styles and formats that can be used to generate leads and create pull mechanisms without tapping into the budget. The focus here is the development and creation of strategically employed content, customized according to the needs of specific organizations, businesses and institutions. You will learn how to instrumentalize specific content within a broader strategy to create inbound traffic for your operation by discussing case studies and performing content audits and inventories.

Let's hand out one-dollar laptops with free access to Facebook and Google to developing countries, so they can move on up and enjoy the merry merits of modernity… Great idea! Or is it? In this class, we will try to answer this question by having a closer look on the shifts and changes in development, communication and social change in recent times. However, dealing with development issues requires to go back in time and identify the historical reasons for the given social, economical and political differences on the map of the world at this specific point in time. Hence, we need to consider the long shadow of major causal factors, such as imperialism and colonialism, as well as early development journalism and efforts to transform paternalism into partnership. While media and communication technology have been the driving force of social change and development in the last decades, the question of whether industrial, economic and political development equals improvement remains to be answered. As a matter of fact, inequality is on the rise, in developing and developed countries alike. What happened? Throughout the last decade, many countries, as part of the neoliberal agenda, reduced the input of bilateral and multilateral agencies and outsourced their development programs to private subcontractors. This led to a fast digitization of economic and political activities, resulting in the advent of digital capitalism-and globalized poverty. We will discuss related aspects such as commodification, spatialization and structuration of communication as well as strategies to balance this situation-from participatory models and dialogic communication structures, to behavior-centered approaches that enable long-term audience engagement and empowerment.

This book can be seen as both, a celebration of past and present achievements of creative expression, artistic articulation, cultural contributions, and mediated movements for the sake of liberalization and democracy, and a warning against a “cultural revolution” defined by censorship, suppression of pluralist opinions, unnatural conformity in science and journalism, and the distinction between “fake news” and “fact” handled by artificial intelligence or part-time fact checkers.

While Reggae and class have been put in context by various authors, this chapter is aiming at identifying the role of Rastafari as the style's constitutional ideological foundation in this regard. Since the artistic presentation of the genre remains rooted in aesthetic styles and presentations shaped in Jamaica as its place of origin, this is not an attempt to provide an overview on the considerable influence the music and its inherent confrontational stance of protest and social change has managed to address matters of inequality around the globe. As a religiously charged empowerment strategy that evolved in the climate of imperialism and colonization, the Rastafarian concept aims at eradicating structural disadvantages between the dominating Western world and the global periphery and offers a spirituality-based social consciousness, characterized by its egalitarian character. Hence, referring to Hall's considerations of hegemony and domination, the chapter is touching on the strong social, cultural, and symbolic capital of Reggae in the sense of Bourdieu and furthermore elaborates on aspects of class and gender, as introduced by Skeggs. In the course of the discussion, various contradictory positions between the egalitarian approach attributed to the music and the more differentiated practices of Rastafarian thought will be pointed out.

This paper attempts to discuss the transformational process of the Bobo Shanti Rasta Mansion as represented in Jamaican popular music. While early protagonists who claimed affiliation with the rather strict denomination of the Rastafarian faith got labeled as militant radicals by more moderate Rasta branches and mainstream artists alike, a new generation has carefully deconstructed the Bobo identity, using portions to underline their cultural athenticity with what seems to have become accepted as a rather undisputed common ground of the Rastafarian tradition. A process, that is being demonstrated in the course of a descriptive historical discussion and representative samples of lyrical content.

Core audience/market:
Due to the establishment of large scale relations between different fields of study the book serves a complementary purpose for interdisciplinary oriented scholars open-minded for input, inspiration or merging of expansive ideas from neighbouring areas. The handbook bears the strong potential to serve as a fundamental resource for universities and various faculty catalogues. Stringent bundling of existing schematizations of extemporaneous aspects and strategies in
Communication, Cultural Studies, Music, Theatre, Poetry, Pedagogy, Management, Psychology, Cognitive Research, Anthropology, Epistemology, Cybernetics, Philosophy allows for a diversified core audience of  academics, university libraries and students from various disciplinary backgrounds in Anglophone countries and the global market.
Wider readership:
Due to the explicit focus on interconnections and cross-sections between the various disciplines’ approach to integrate and discuss extemporaneous aspects, there is a considerable potential to equally draw interest among circles outside of the specialized, scientific scope. Explorations into possible application in fields like education, management or creative industries as well as meta-perspectives disclosing undetected patterns of extemporaneous influence on habitual behaviour, artistic performance and even use of new media technology can be considered as issues of general interest, appealing to a wider readership.
