Inner Alchemy

The narcissistic ego continuously urges us to become addicted to various kinds of false cravings, often for unhealthy, unwholesome, toxic, substances, attitudes, and habits, as a way of escaping from a deeper, but unreal, sense of basic deficiency, inner emptiness, and fearful insecurity, which the ego tries to cover over by superimposing a distracting false façade of artificial pleasurable sensations and self-definitions, which can become rather grandiose and unrealistic, sometimes accompanied by destructively demonic energies and rather insane urges in the most extreme forms of selfish egoism. These various forms of ego-gratification are basically designed to provide quasi substitutes for the natural, genuine euphoria, excitement, vitality, security, wellbeing, and divine grandeur, that are intrinsic to our real being, and only imitated by the various intense, often addictive, compulsive, unhealthy, unwholesome, conditionally acquired, readily lost, sensations, substances, habits, and attitudes that the narcissistic ego or separate sense of self-awareness urges us to pursue.

Ontological Apology attempts to examine how our attitudes and interactions with work both as individuals and a society have shaped our culture. Whereas for the majority of the modern age we have shirked Ontology [being] for Epistemology [process] this work hopes to bring the question of doing back into relation with meaning where it belongs. I hope to make the case for a neo-teleology born from what we can know via the guideposts rooted in the natural world all around us. By seeking purpose not to transcend but circulate, we may better prepare ourselves for the creativity the future will demand of us.

"I propose that the alchemical cycle of the four elements Earth, Water, Air and Fire provides a useful and exact analogue for the processes of transformation of a wide variety of types, and as such can be considered an archetype.  The elemental cycle is a potent symbol for a transformative, qualitative language (logos) which has the potential to guide human consciousness towards lawful, holistic engagement with essentially any phenomenon.  When worked consistently, the elemental cycle leads us beyond ‘everyday’ modes of cognition to what could be called Imaginative, Inspirative, and Intuitive modes cognition.  In these modes, thinking no longer takes place ‘about’ a phenomenon, but ‘with’, ‘through’, and ‘within’ phenomena.  The elemental cycle provides a content, a method, and self-regulating feedback mechanisms for working with transformation, and can help engender a consciousness that can fruitfully dialogue with the interiority of the world by making it explicit.  Its power lies in its ability to act as a template and guide for the structuring of human consciousness; it is a tool which makes available a coherent, archetypal patterning which can help guide and transform a human consciousness in healthy and practical ways.  By making available new modes of consciousness, it helps us learn to see ourselves and the world in ways that allow for greater creativity and flexibility when faced with difficult or problematic situations. At the same time it illuminates and connects us with phenomena – both outer and inner – that might otherwise pass our notice.

This essay comprises a detailed study of the nature of the elements and the elemental cycle, through which it is hoped the reader may gain a solid enough foundation to work experimentally with the elemental cycle independently if desired.  Therefore, the cycle is introduced via a brief phenomenology of the individual elements, which are then connected, compared, and brought together to form a complete picture of the cycle.  The breadth of applicability of the cycle is then explored through a series of specific instances that also serve to illuminate the qualities of the cycle itself.  A report on third-party work with the elemental cycle provides complementary and contrasting experiences, while an in-depth review and application of the cycle to the nature of images opens up the complexities and demonstrates the recursive, self-generating quality of the cycle.  Lastly, an introductory series of practical steps and specific exercises, advice, and questions for each elemental stage is provided to help the reader use the cycle independently."

Over the past few decades, Daoism has become a recognizable part of Western alternative spiritual life. Now, that Westernized version of Daoism is going full circle, traveling back from America and Europe to influence Daoism in China. Dream Trippers draws on more than a decade of ethnographic work with Daoist monks and Western seekers to trace the presence and spread of Westernized Daoism in contemporary China. David A. Dream Trippers untangles the anxieties, confusions, and ambiguities that arise as the Chinese and American practitioners work through the tensions between cosmological attunement and radical spiritual individualism in their complex search for authenticity in a globalized world.

Published in 1980, this book is based on a series of lectures given by Marie Louise Von Franz in 1959.  Von Franz (a contemporary of Carl Jung) gave the lectures at the Jung Institute in Zurich.

This thesis aims to conduct a comprehensive study on the theoretical and historical connection between Neidan and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) based on a detailed study of the Nedian scripture Yi-dao Huan-yuan [special characters omitted], compiled in the Qing Dynasty.

First of all, based on a variety of editions found in different libraries in China, one can see that the publication of the scripture was connected to the Luˇ zuˇ [special characters omitted] spirit-writing movement during the Qing period. Signs of the movement can be found in the main text, prefaces, and the religion background of its editors and fundraisers. In additions to its formation, the Luˇ zuˇ spirit-writing cults and their disciplesf religious believes also played an important role in the circulation and re-publication of the scriptures in the 19th century.

Secondly, based on previous Neidan studies, one could not bypass the fact that most Neidan scholars usually omit the connection between Neidan and TCM. Especially in regard to the definition of Xing-mìng [special characters omitted] in Neidan texts, the application of TCM theories in this concept was usually dismissed. The discourse of Zhēn yào [special characters omitted] in Neidan, based on theories of Chinese Materia Medica, Medicine Formulae and Etiology developed in Song and the theoretical evolution in the Meridian System during Song and Yuan period played an important role in neidan texts. In addition to the above, the Diagnostic Approaches by applying a theory called Xīn cáng shén wèi jūnzhuˇ zhī guān lùn [special characters omitted] , a theory that emphasis the Heart [special characters omitted] as a residence where Shén [special characters omitted], the Monarchy [special characters omitted] resides, played a major role in the discourse of practice of Xing-ming in Neidan texts. Just as Neidan texts emphasized, Xìng and Mìng are interconnect and inter-related. This discourse was the main concept of the Xīn cáng shén wèi junzhuˇ zhī guān lùn, according to which onefs body is related to onefs mind so that mind and body should be diagnosed and healed as one. Through an in-depth study of the application of TCM theories in Yi-dao Huanyuan and its Neidan practice, and carefully explained the history of each medical concepts, one can understand that the principle of Xìng-mìng in Neidan was built upon the Chinese medical context.

Based on the theories mentioned above, Yi-dao Huan-yuan demonstrates that the interconnection and inter-relations of Xìng-mìng was built upon the influence of the heart to Ming mén [special characters omitted], or vice versa. Mìng mén is one of the concepts applied in TCM. Under the Xin cáng shén wèi jūnzhuˇ zhī guān lùn and related concepts, the phrase Xìng-mìng in Neidan does not only carry common meanings, but medical understanding based on the medical identity and medical knowledge of their authors and editors. From this study, one could see how the medical development in Song and Yuan period impacted the terms and phrases used in Neidan texts and the theories applied in such texts.

Finally, after going through the medical details of the Neidan practice presented in Yi-dao Huan-yuan, it is hard to omit that most medical theories and concepts applied in Neidan practice were found or influenced by Daoists who also happen to be some of the most famous practitioners in Chinese Medical history.

In conclusion, we will review the fact that the theories and concepts these Daoists built became the core of TCM practice. They not only shaped the development of TCM, but also originated the meaning of terms applied in Neidan regarding to organs, meridians, Yào [special characters omitted] and Xìng-mìng etc. Their contributions have long been understood as religious healing instead of professional medicine in Daoist Studies. This point of view has underestimated the influence of Daoism in TCM development, and the interaction of the two. Vice versa, this has also limited the understanding, in Neidan studies, regarding to the applications of medical terms, concepts and theories.

This article takes the case of the Vietnamese Cao Dai religion to examine how Asian religious leaders and translators, in a context of colonial modernity, invested a European language with their own cosmologies and discourses, building both a national identity and an alternative spiritual universalism. Studies of translation in colonial contexts have tended to focus on the processes and impact of translating European texts and ideas into the languages of the colonized. This article discusses the inverse process, examining how Caodai textual production used French spiritist language and tropes to occult its Chinese roots, translating Daoist cosmology into a universalist and anti-colonial spiritual discourse rooted in Vietnamese nationalism. Simboli i motivi na stećcima opisuju spiritualni svijet, koji nam je teško shvatiti ukoliko ne poznajemo osnovna načela i filozofiju neoplatonizma, pa su čak i najprivrženiji istraživači bosanskog srednjovjekovlja iste posmatrali samo kao ukrasne reljefne motive uskraćujući stećcima ogromnu količinu " filozofske i duhovne sadržine " koja uveliko olakšava izučavanje vjerskog karaktera Crkve bosanske. Awakening to Reality (Wuzhen pian) is one of the most important and best-known Taoist alchemical texts. Written in the eleventh century, it describes in a poetical form, and in a typically cryptic and allusive language, several facets of Neidan, or internal alchemy. This book presents the first part of the text, consisting of sixteen poems, which contain a concise but comprehensive exposition of Neidan. In addition to notes that intend to clarify the meaning of the more obscure points, the book also contains selections from a commentary dating from the late eighteenth century, which is distinguished by the use of a lucid and plain language.

In the hills of China’s central Hunan province, an anxious young apprentice officiates over a
Daoist ritual known as the Banner Rite to Summon Sire Yin. Before a crowd of masters,
relatives, and villagers―and the entire pantheon of gods and deceased masters ritually invited to
witness the event―he seeks to summon Celestial Lord Yin Jiao, the ferocious deity who supplies
the exorcistic power to protect and heal bodies and spaces from illness and misfortune. If the
apprentice cannot bring forth the deity, the rite is considered a failure and the ordination
suspended: His entire professional career hangs in the balance before it even begins.

This richly textured study asks how the Banner Rite works or fails to work in its own terms. How
do the cosmological, theological, and anthropological assumptions ensconced in the ritual itself
account for its own efficacy or inefficacy? Weaving together ethnography, textual analysis,
photography, and film, the book invites readers into the religious world of ritual masters in
today’s south China. It shows that the efficacy of rituals such as the Banner Rite is driven by the
ability of a ritual master to form an intimate relationship with exorcistic deities such as Yin Jiao,
which is far from guaranteed. The book reveals the ways in which these ritual claims are rooted
in the great liturgical movements of the Song and Yuan dynasties (960–1368) and how they are
performed these days amid the social and economic pressures of rural life in the post-Mao era.

Written for students and scholars of Chinese religion and Daoism, Knotting the Banner will also
appeal to anthropologists and comparative religionists, especially those working on ritual.

This anthology presents complete or partial translations of sixteen important works belonging to the Taoist tradition of Neidan, or Internal Alchemy. While the selections are far from covering the whole field of Neidan—a virtually impossible task, given its width and variety—they are representative of its main lineages and branches. Texts have been selected in this perspective and are arranged chronologically, in order to provide an overview not only of Neidan, but also of the history of its discourses and practices. Four of the sixteen texts are integrally translated. Six texts and two commentaries are translated here (entirely or partially) for the first time into English. The book is concluded by several tables and by an index of the main terms.

Yidao huanyuan 醫道還元 is a text that demonstrates the interconnection and inter-relations between theories of neidan 內丹 and those of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It has been identified as a Daoist medical text by TCM professionals and presented as such to students of the five-year medical degree programme in mainland China. Despite its influences on the medical field, the textual, historical and religious contexts of this scripture such as its authorship and various editions remain mostly unknown. Based on a comprehensive study of the various editions of Yidao huanyuan, this paper aims to resolve such issues and fill in the research gap, by understanding the historical, social and medical backgrounds, religious beliefs, and spirit-writing cult involved in its publication.
Through a detailed study of the earliest edition of Yidao huanyuan and related materials found, this paper will reveal the connection between the first appeared edition and the spirit-writing believes of its editors. They were a group of elites with official governmental titles in the Qing court, who not only edited and compiled the text, but also devoted themselves to funding and preserving the printing boards. The case of Yidao huanyuan revealed the fact that disciples of the spirit-writing movement would devote themselves to their religion in many ways. One of those was to edit Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist and medical texts that were demanded by the society at that time. This was especially true for the elite from the upper social class. They might not, on a superficial level, present themselves as a Daoist disciple or a member of a spirit-writing cult, or act in the name of their Daoist belief or a Daoist temple. However, by revealing their editing details and objectives, it was obvious that the religiosity behind their works was no different from that embedded in the spirit-writing movement. Daoist medical texts such as Yidao huanyuan had initially been a product of Daoist spirit-writing movement. They have impacted the development of TCM, though most medical scholarship has ignored this fact. The edited works of the elite could be identified as an extension of the spirit-writing movement in Qing
Daoism.

For thousands of years symbols have played an integral role in understanding the meaning of dreams.  Archetypal symbols, symbols that resonate across a wide range of cultures, have a powerful role in dreams, and the archetypal symbol of the snake with its association with wisdom and higher knowledge, whether for good or for ill, appears universal.  With respect specifically to healing and dreams, serpents played an important role in ancient Greece in the temples of Asklepios, which the sick visited with the expectation that they would either receive information to effect a cure, or would receive healing directly from the gods while dreaming.1 In depictions of the Greek god Asklepios, he holds The Sceptre of Medicine, which has a single snake coiled about it, representing divine wisdom and the power of healing. His daughter Hygiea, the goddess of Health, also commonly appears with a snake, and the Temples of Asclepios where the sick would sleep featured sacred snakes in both the main temples and in the dream incubation chambers. What is behind the immense popularity of the Harry Potter books? And—is it significant? What is it that makes young and old alike keep turning the pages of Harry Potter?

Critical commentaries have much to say on the series as a work of literature, some of which is laudatory and some of which is not. But we will not be concerned here with the literary value attributed to the Potter series by today’s critics. The Harry Potter stories have become a part of world culture and they will undoubtedly remain popular alongside other classics for years to come.

Our consideration in this and subsequent articles will be with its value as a vehicle for spiritual truth as it might mirror the deeper springs of spiritual scientific tenets, the springs that have given birth to Anthroposophical spiritual science. In the process, and in this article, we will be seeking to provide answers to the moral criticisms, which have been many, and which naturally arise in anyone who may be wary of the “witch and wizard” world that forms the backdrop for the Potter series.

While we will explore the question of the value of the Harry Potter series as a vehicle for spiritual truth, this article will only partly answer our first question about Harry Potter: Is he or will he remain significant? What we will be presenting here is aimed at laying a foundation for further explorations that will seek to answer this question more fully. This book describes the theory and methods of an original somatic approach to movement education. Based on the five Elements of ancient philosophical tradition, Elemental Movement integrates somatic and alchemical principles, processes, and practice. It employs movement as the primary vehicle for a wide range of personal explorations, using the Elements both as a framework and as a set of symbolic tools.

I read this story recently, after a conversation with a work colleague about the Tarot led to a recommendation of these graphic novels written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Jean Giraud (aka Moebius).

It's hard to know where to start with Jodorowsky's created Universe, so I purchased the original Incal story which is split into three volumes, and have been translated from French to English.

Thus I began my journey into this strange 'Jodoverse'.

My perception of reality has not quite been the same since, but I feel that my personal viewpoint of the world around me has been changed positively by this meta-physical science-fiction fable and its deeply resonant themes, which I feel are an aid by the authors to a discovery of the Self by the reader. 

It is a meditational story which is the basis of a form of self initiation to the process of individuation which seems so desperately needed amidst the disconnection of the technological and authoritarian age. 

This psychedelic fable seems directed towards easing the loss of our humanity and compassion, and it represents an attempt to reconnect with the lost archaic world of the subconscious and decode its lessons and meanings.  I feel that this work is an experiment to give us back our own minds whilst searching for meaning in our collective existence, and to anchor ourselves in the ever present now. 

Of course the skeptical view would be that this is just a work of fiction,  but even fiction has a role in the voyage of self discovery.  I hope this analysis can illuminate the authors' work satisfactorily.  I will try not to reveal too much of the intricacies of the story, but will concentrate more on thematic elements, as I feel this story is worth reading, and do not want to detract from enjoyment by revealing any major spoilers.

The work has a strong spiritual subtext, with elements of the Tarot, Alchemy, and the Universal Tree Of Life grabbing my attention from the pages upon the first reading.  It is a reflection on paper of Jodorowsky's own brand of 'psychomagic', a blend of eastern philosophy and Hermetic alchemy.

Nurturing the embryo of sagehood was a widespread trope in premodern Chinese Buddhism. From its inception in the fifth-century apocryphal Sutra of Benevolent Kings, medieval Chinese Buddhist exegetes, Chan Buddhists, and Daoist inner alchemists all used this trope as both a metaphor for enlightenment and a metaphysical figure of supernatural embodiment—sometimes within the same textual passage. This trope’s historical use reveals an overlooked commitment on the part of many Chinese Buddhist thinkers to the notion that liberation entails the conception, gestation, and birth of supernatural bodies. The case of the embryo of sagehood demonstrates the capacity of figurative language to move fluidly across the boundaries of metaphor and metaphysics, a capacity I argue was a constitutive feature of premodern Chinese Buddhist soteriology.

本文探討「養聖胎」的概念在中國佛教的出現與演變。自五世紀的偽經以來，註釋家、禪師與內丹家都以聖胎作爲譬喻來代表覺悟，同時也把它理解為形而上超自然的身體。作者認為，聖胎的個案能夠闡明中國佛教形象化語言如何突破譬喻和形而上學之間的界線。

This detailed tour through the Alchemy Exhibit at the Egyptian Museum in San Jose, California, focuses on the universal operations of alchemy as they are practiced in the lab as well as in spiritual work. The exhibit includes a reproduction of a working alchemists laboratory from the 1500s, as well as a full-size reproduction of the Ripley Scroll, and a unique enclave featuring a guided alchemical meditation practiced by alchemists for centuries. Written by curator and designer Dennis William Hauck.

"Originally written for Chinese readers, this book provides a clear description of the Taoist practice of Internal Alchemy, or Neidan. The author outlines the stages of the alchemical practice and clarifies several relevant terms and notions, including Essence, Breath, and Spirit; the Cinnabar Fields; the "Fire Times"; and the Embryo. The book is based on the system of the Wuzhen pian (Awakening to Reality), one of the main sources of Internal Alchemy, and contains about two hundred quotations from original Taoist texts.

Wang Mu (1908-92) received the Longmen ordination in his youth. He taught Internal Alchemy (Neidan) and was held in high regard by both Taoist practitioners and scholars. He served as a board member of the China Taoist Association and was for some time in charge of its research activities. He is known outside China mainly for his annotated edition of the Wuzhen pian (Awakening to Reality), the text at the basis of the outline of Internal Alchemy that he provides in the present book.
