Data

The USGS Washington Water Science Center currently operates over 380 data-collection sites in Washington.  The sites collect surface water, groundwater, water quality and meteorological data that are available in real time.  Current and historic data can be retrieved from the National Water Information System (NWIS) database and the National Water Dashboard.

MODPATH model to simulate backward particle tracking in groundwater near Puget Sound, Pierce County, Washington MODPATH model to simulate backward particle tracking in groundwater near Puget Sound, Pierce County, Washington

Backward particle tracking in groundwater was simulated with MODPATH and the MODFLOW groundwater flow model by Long and others (2024). Simulated particles were tracked backward from well intakes in areas within or near Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) for the purpose of determining their likely points of origin within groundwater recharge areas. Steady-state and transient simulations were...

Water use estimates for 2017 for the United States part of the Salish Sea basin, northwestern Washington Water use estimates for 2017 for the United States part of the Salish Sea basin, northwestern Washington

This data release contains vector shapefiles of gridded, monthly water use estimates for the United States part of the Salish Sea basin in northwestern Washington for the year 2017. The water use estimates are provided by category of use for public supply, domestic self-supply, agriculture, and aquaculture each and are further distinguished by surface water or groundwater sources. Data...

Water temperature, air temperature, sensor depth, and select flow and temperature metrics. Data from water year 2020 for the Stormwater Action Monitoring Puget Small Streams Project Water temperature, air temperature, sensor depth, and select flow and temperature metrics. Data from water year 2020 for the Stormwater Action Monitoring Puget Small Streams Project

These data were collected as part of the Stormwater Action Monitoring (SAM) program's Puget Small Streams (PSS) status and trends program (https://ecology.wa.gov/regulations-permits/reporting-requirements/stormwater-monitoring/stormwater-action-monitoring/sam-status-and-trends/puget-small-streams). The data presented here were collected from 29 sites during water year 2020 for water...

Sediment chemistry in nearshore Bellingham Bay, urban creeks and the Nooksack River, Puget Sound, Washington, March and September 2019 Sediment chemistry in nearshore Bellingham Bay, urban creeks and the Nooksack River, Puget Sound, Washington, March and September 2019

Concentrations of individual polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and chlorinated pesticides are reported for surface sediments collected along the nearshore of Bellingham Bay, the Nooksack River, and four urban creeks discharging to Bellingham Bay in March 2019. Additional samples were collected along the nearshore urban waterfront corridor...

Supporting Datasets for Analyses of Sediment Transport and Channel Change in the Puyallup River Watershed Supporting Datasets for Analyses of Sediment Transport and Channel Change in the Puyallup River Watershed

The Puyallup River and it's major tributaries, including the Carbon and Mowich Rivers, are sediment-rich systems in western Washington State, USA, that flow from glaciated headwaters on Mount Rainier to Puget Sound over a short distance. In the populated Puget Lowlands, sediment deposition and associated loss of flood conveyance has been a chronic issue (Prych, 1988; Czuba and others...

Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of surface and groundwater samples from central and eastern Washington, USA Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of surface and groundwater samples from central and eastern Washington, USA

In this data release, hydrogen-2 and oxygen-18 isotope ratios are presented for 158 unique sites in central and eastern Washington. There are 16 unique surface water sites with a total of 140 samples, and 142 groundwater sites with a total of 167 samples. Sample dates range from February 1993 to February 2021. Stable isotope analysis of water utilizes slight differences in the mass of...

Stream Temperature and Thermal Sensitivity in Great Basin Region, 2011 - 2021 Stream Temperature and Thermal Sensitivity in Great Basin Region, 2011 - 2021

Warming climates, declining winter snowpacks, and increased periods of drought have contributed to warming stream temperatures and declining stream flows, impacting habitat availability for cold water species. Particularly in the northern Great Basin region available habitat may be restricted to headwaters, where cooler temperatures and reliable stream flows allow cold water species...

Water temperature, air temperature, and sensor depth data from select locations in the Big Soos Creek basin, WA from April 2023 to June 2024 Water temperature, air temperature, and sensor depth data from select locations in the Big Soos Creek basin, WA from April 2023 to June 2024

These data were collected as part of a larger project to support Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) modeling in the Big Soos Creek basin. Water temperature, air temperature and sensor depth were collected from four sites in the Big Soos Creek basin; LITTLE SOOS CREEK BELOW LAKE YOUNGS NEAR KENT, WA (USGS site ID 12109400), JENKINS CREEK AT 188TH AVE SE NEAR KENT, WA (USGS site ID 12110300)...

Site information, probability differences, and entropy-based metrics of streamflow information for the USGS continuous streamflow monitoring network, 1981-2020 Site information, probability differences, and entropy-based metrics of streamflow information for the USGS continuous streamflow monitoring network, 1981-2020

These data sets have at-site values of probability differences and entropy-based metrics to compare the effects of streamflow resolution, monitoring period, and record extension instead of monitoring on streamflow information. Source code for the R functions used to calculate conditional probabilities, conditional entropy, and mutual information are included in a compressed file with...

Self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index values averaged per water year with associated streamflow permanence data products for the HUC17 Pacific Northwest Region Self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index values averaged per water year with associated streamflow permanence data products for the HUC17 Pacific Northwest Region

This data release includes estimated Self-Calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) values and ancillary information for three data products that had previously been developed for the Pacific Northwest Region (HUC 17). The data products are stored in three child items: 1. National Hydrography Dataset High Resolution Flowlines: This child item contains the flowlines in the...

Particulate physicochemical data at a fish hatchery in Puyallup, Washington, September 2023 Particulate physicochemical data at a fish hatchery in Puyallup, Washington, September 2023

Particulate samples were collected from a fish hatchery in Puyallup, Washington, September 18 – 20, 2023 during late summer, low-flow conditions in the intake creek. Settled solids were collected from a retention pond and from the incubation room trough. The trough solids likely had been deposited during storm events the previous winter. A third sample was collected in the incubation...

MODFLOW-NWT model to simulate the groundwater flow system of the Kitsap Peninsula, West-Central Washington MODFLOW-NWT model to simulate the groundwater flow system of the Kitsap Peninsula, West-Central Washington

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model, constructed in MODFLOW-NWT, was developed to evaluate the groundwater flow system of the Kitsap Peninsula, west-central Washington. A transient model was constructed to simulate groundwater flow for January 1985–December 2012 using annual stress periods for 1985–2004 and monthly stress periods for 2005–2012. The model was used to simulate six...
