Philosophers say it another way: “Knowledge is
telling the past. Wisdom is predicting the future.”
In line with this philosophy, this chapter will
explore the history of this marvelous industry
called tourism and hospitality.

•Religious travel took the form of pilgrimages to
places of worship.
•Beginning in 1388, English pilgrims were required
to obtain and carry permits, the forerunners for
the modern passport.

•travel declined and limited.
Travel, derived from the word travail, became
burdensome, dangerous and demanding during
this time.

to: political instability, lack of extensive trade and
commerce and robbers who preyed on travelers.
•Crusaders and pilgrims were the only ones who
traveled.

century, roads were not maintained and they
became unsafe.
•Thieves inflicted harm on those who dared to

It is characterized by the Grand Tour in which
scholars from both the middle and upper classes
seeking positions in court were encouraged on a 3-

There was also an increase in the popularity of “spas” in
which the sick sought a remedy for their illness by
bathing in the mineral springs or medicinal baths.
The term “spa” is derived from the Walloon word “espa”

It stimulated pleasure travel due to increase of
wealth, the creation of a large and prosperous
middle class, improvements in transportation, the
need of the working class to find relief from their
work, and the desire for relaxation and
adventure.

the 19th century, the organization of travel
became an established institution. Travel
organizers emerged.
The first and most famous of these was Thomas
Cook.

•At the beginning of the 20th century, pleasure
travel continued to expand, encouraged by the
increasing wealth, curiosity and outgoing
attitudes of the people as well as the increasing
ease of such movement.
•The introduction of the jet aircraft, private car,
paid holidays, shorter workweek, annual holidays.
Tourism and hospitality dates back to the earliest of
civilizations. It can trace its beginnings in the Old
Testament. Early tourism and hospitality is
characterized by travel for business and religion.
Travel for business was mainly trading with other
countries or tribes. Religious travel took the form of
pilgrimages to places of worship. Travel received
great impetus during the Roman Empire due to the
construction of good roads and accommodations.
The ancient Egyptians provided food and
lodging to travelers who wanted to see the pyramids
and attend festivals.
Travel was limited during the middle ages.
Tourism and hospitality in the Renaissance
period is characterized by the Grand Tour.
The twentieth century has made the world
accessible to the average citizen with the advanced
technology and transportation.
The components of the tourism and hospitality network are:
food and beverage services, lodging services, recreation and
entertainment services and travel and tourism services.
Tourism is the temporary, short-term movement of people to
destinations outside the places where they normally live and
work and their activities during their stay at these
destinations. The word hospitality is derived from the Latin
word “hospitare” which means to receive as a guest
