Introduction to Philippine literature
• Philippine literature is a behemoth in the World. It has been existing for
nearly a millennium and it is till growing.
• New multimedia forms has risen throughout the Philippines.
• The literature in the Philippine has never been diverse than before. It has
become more diverse than ever.
Tagalog language
• Derived from the word Taga-Ilog. Because the first speakers were from the rivers
in Central Luzon.
• It is spoken by ethnic Tagalog people and it is their main language.
• Tagalog is closely related to Bikolano and Kapampangan.
• It has been standardized into the Filipino language during the reign of the
Americans here in the Philippines.
• 57 million Filipino citizens speak the language out of the Philippines population
of 105 million (2015).
Why study and preserve tagalog
literature?
• Tagalog Literature is value-laden. It is where Filipino values originated
and it is where the Filipino identity is rooted.
• The Tagalog literature is the root of today’s media. All Filipino major
media like ABS-CBN or GMA uses Tagalog. They also adopt Tagalog
literature into films.
• It teaches people how to be critical. It teaches people how to see things in
the way they are and it makes them appreciate the Filipino language even
more.
Online publishing of literature
• Tagalog literature has been published in the Manila region using the
internet.
• Among literature published on the internet are speculative fiction, blog,
graphic novels and many others.
• Tagalog and Manila-based region literature tackles many problems in the
millennial age such as love stories, hardworking stories and many others.
• Online literature has taken off with websites like Wattpad, Fanfiction.net
and Project Gutenberg.
Literary Text: The Illustrados
• A novel by Miguel Syjuco
Introduction
• The novels opens with a man in New York who drowned. The man’s name
is Crispin Salvador. He leaves behind a list of names that would be in the
later use.
The narrator
• The narrator in the novel is young Filipino writer.
Crispin body is found
• Crispin’s body would be found in Hudson River. He would be later laid to
rest and he would be remembered as a great writer.
His book is missing
• His book, exposing the crimes of a wealthy and elite Filipino family was
gone and was missing. Many people began to suspect that it is a planned
assassin
• ation attempt to silence an opposition thinker.
Miguel
• Miguel, a student of Crispin, sets to investigate what really happens into
the death of his teacher and mentor.
Miguel to Manila
• Miguel flies to Manila when he overhears a conversation by the
passengers. He hears that a migrant worker named Lakandula, whose
girlfriend was murdered apparently by the wealthy Changcos family.
• The man has vowed revenge against the Changcos
family.
Miguel investigates
• Miguel investigates the crimes as he goes to places like companies or
interviews a person. The death of Crispin satisfies him to write a novel.
Conclusion
• Filipino literature in Manila is fast growing.
• It is our duty to try to spread it and to preserve the beauty of it.
• The novel, Illustrados, is an example of a 21st century novels in Filipino
literature and is a classic great novel.
