PART I

Test I. In one or two sentences, say something on the following and give your own examples. Examples
copied from the Net or verbatim (word for word) reproduction from classmates aren’t given pints.
Examples must be your own or coming from your own ideas.

1. Simile – It is comparison of an object that usually indicates "like" or "as".


ex. Taylor's lips is as red as blood
2. Personification - It is when a things or an objects personifies a human beings, characteristics or any
living things.
ex. The thunder growled like a tiger

3. Irony – It is a statement that conveys the exact opposite meaning of what is being said.
ex. A pilot has a fear of heights
4. Symbol – A symbol an enhance a theme, an idea or a character.
ex. The color white in Philippine flag symbolizes freedom and peace.

5. Onomatopoeia –It is a word that imitates sound.


ex. The car horn beeped loudly
6. Apostrophe – It is where a speaker addresses an absent or dead person or something that is not
human.
ex. 'Without a love of my own'
7. Synecdoche – A figure of speech in which a name of a part is used to refer a whole.
ex. I gazed upon a thousand fireflies

8. Metonymy – It is where an objects' name is replaced with another name.


ex. Pen is mightier than swords
9. Paradox – In which a statements contradicts itself.
ex. "War is peace"

10. Metaphor – A sentence stating that two things are similar.


ex. The assignment was a breeze.
11. Antithesis – It is the used of an opposite in order to highlight a part.
ex. "Actions, not words"

12. Oxymoron – It a phrase that combines contradictory terms.

ex. Inside out, alone together

13. Allusion – It is a casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event.


ex. He's a real Romeo with a ladies.
14. Alliteration – It is the repetition of the beginning sound in a succession of words.
ex. Sandy saw a silly seal
15. Visual imagery – It refers to the things that you see.
ex. The moon shines so bright.

Test III. Interpret the following stanzas. (What do they mean?) Answer in one or two sentences only.
1. Yet round the sun deep colors creep;
And though he loves with splendid fire
And vows his will is firm as rock,
I tremble lest he too may tire.

Ans: The persona here is sad because though their love towards each other was so strong but in
the end one has just given up maybe because her lover got tired from their relationship they had.

2. "What comes out of feud between two clans


Who will not speak save to condemn,
Who hurt defiance till the last?
A God who sees will punish them."

Ans. In this stanza, the two clans had a problem and a fight with each other that lead the
persona and her lover to have a forbidden love because their clans was against for their
relationship.

3. My dream is like a fog at sea


Which tries to reach the land in vain,
For earthquakes and the tidal waves
Keep driving it to sea again.

Ans. In this stanza, the persona tells about her dreams that will just vanished in any time but
because she has a strong courage she keeps on striving hard to get that dream back again.

4. So while he waits and hesitates


His chance of winning fame slips by
Ah! Should he dare I firmly swear
My love for him would never die,

Ans. In this stanza, there is her lover that waited for her for so long but tgen maybe that man
got tired from waiting so he stops on pursuing the girl.

4. For if the ship should venture forth,


Then I would weave a happy plot,
And conjure up some potent charm
That evil winds could harm if not.
5. Ans. In this stanza, the persona has finally give up on hoping to have a someone that will
last and all she needs to do now is to keep forward and move on already from the
heartaches that she felt from the past.

6. Perhaps our souls , dissevered here,


Will meet hereafter on the way
The soul takes down the dismal trail,
While going to the judgment day.

Ans. The persona here has now decided to believe in "God's time" in which she will let
God give her the right man for her that will last and love for the lifetime.
