WHAT IS PATTERN DRAFTING?
• Pattern drafting is a making process using the
measurements of different body areas to create
basic patterns
• It is the act of manipulating and shaping a flat piece
of fabric to conform to one or more form curves of
the human figure.
• In sewing and fashion design,a pattern is the
template from which the parts of a garment are
traced onto fabrics before being cut out and
assembled.
WHY PATTERN DRAFTING
• In the garment industry, patterns are used in order to cut the fabric pieces and to make the
garment.
• Patterns are essentially made so that the same style can be easily duplicated when it is needed
and multiple pieces can be efficiently made.
• Pattern making ensures that you don’t have to start from scratch while duplicating the
patterns.
• Patterns are obtained by following a set of instructions not guessing method as in freehand.
• Patterns are laid on the fabrics according to instructions on the pattern pieces unlike in
freehand that you take any approximate measurement to cut the fabrics directly.
• Patterns will produce very fit garment that suit current design for the industry while freehand
may produce out shaped garment.
