What Is It

Just by looking at the table below, you will have an idea of what
recreational activities and its categories are.

Recreational Activities
Passive recreation Active recreation

Being physically active means improving your overall well-being and quality
of life. Finding ways to be fit is a must if one wants to live better. Recreational
Activities are activities that give pleasure or leisure like gardening, playing sports
or dancing, sewing, camping and more, while Leisure may also be described as
activities that you do in your spare time like reading, meditating, drawing, and
engaging in popular activities. Leisure and recreation offer a solid basis for the
activities and facilities, and both are concerned with presenting enjoyable
experiences to indulge in during free time. It also calms the mind, improves their
outlook on life and increases positive affect, and rejuvenates our body, makes
family relationships stronger, diminishes chances of diseases and lives longer.

Recreational opportunities described above fall into two broad categories:

active recreation and passive recreation. Passive recreation refers to recreational
activities that do not require organized facilities like sports fields or pavilions and
gyms. While Active recreation are means of relaxation and fun time activities
usually of a more formal nature no particular rules to be followed. Often requiring
equipment and taking place at prescribed places, sites or fields.

Fit Facts:
Sports and recreation
do not discriminate against
people with disabilities; in fact,
some sports are being modified
so that they could also enjoy a
specific sport like normal
people do.

INDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Indoor recreational activities are activities that can be done or performed in

the halls, rooms or in the classroom and do even inside your house. Such indoor
activities require less space, so it can be managed behind the door. Participating in
different physical activity activities can be effective strategies to treat symptoms
related to any virus and other respiratory illnesses. Every day is a new opportunity
to engage in physical activity that can bring short and long-term benefits to everyone.
Being consistent and motivated may be enhanced by peer support, family support,
or social media platforms offering exercise programs.

Importance of Indoor Activities During Pandemic

1. Strength-training has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety

2. Elevations in self-esteem, improved concentration, reductions in depressive
symptoms, and improvements in sleep.
3. For older adults and among individuals managing chronic medical conditions.

Can you identify the pictures below? Write your answer on a separate paper.

6
CO_Q4_PE9_Module 1
Badminton
The roots of the sports could be traced back to ancient
Greece, China and India. It was in the mid18th century
when poona became popular in India through the British
military who were stationed at Pune. In 1870’s the game
was brought to England and was introduced by the Duke of
Beaufort in a form of recreational game. Around the 19th
century the game was played with nets and called battledore
(bat) and shuttlecock then later name badminton as the
official name. In 1972 badminton was introduced as a
demonstration game in the Olympics held at Munich. And
by 1992 at Barcelona, Spain badminton become became an
official part of the Olympic game.

Badminton could be played by single (male/female) or double

(male/female/mix). The aim is to score by hitting the shuttlecock across the net and
landing inside the opponent's half of the court without the opponent being able to
return back to your court. A match consists of 3 sets of 21 points and a match is
won by winning 2 sets out of 3. In case of 20 all, the side which gains a 2-point lead
first, wins the game. Basic skills like strokes (backhand, forehand underhand and
overhead), stance, grip, footwork, service and shots (clear, drop, and smash) are
inessential in winning the game.

Did you know?

• In older days the string of the badminton racket was

made of cat’s stomach lining.
• The shuttle is made from the left wing of a goose.

Bowling
Known as one of the oldest games of the world,
bowling also called as tenpins could be traced way back
7000 years ago in Egypt. Where Egyptians rolled stones at
various objects knocking over. However, it gained its
popularity in Germany during the Middle Ages not as a sport
but a religious ritual. In 1325, laws were passed
in Berlin and Cologne that limited bets on lawn bowling.
Indoor alleys were built in New York City in 1840. In 1890,
the game flourished in Eastern and Midwestern cities in
Germany. In the Philippines, “Paeng” or Rafael Nepomuceno,
a Pilipino world class Bowling champion was known
worldwide due to his track record: World Cup, 1976, 1980,
1992 and 1996.

Bowling is played indoors on wooden or synthetic lanes with maximum

dimensions of 60 ft. long and 42 in width. The game aims to knock down ten pens
on the first strike if not on the second using a heavy ball rolled down along the narrow
lane. There are 10 scoring frames. Each frame is one turn, but you get two throws

7
CO_Q4_PE9_Module 1
in each frame. The number of pins knocked down with both throws is added to your
total score. Equipment used are pins, bowling ball, lane and shoes.

Bowling Terms:

1. Strike- when the first ball knocked down all ten pins.
2. Spare – a player knocked down all pens second time after knocking all pins
on the first ball.
3. Brooklyn - this is when a player obtains a strike by hitting the pins in the
opposite pocket from which he/she has thrown the ball.

Did you know?

In 1511, King Henry VIII, king of England, an

avid fan of Bowling, banned the game among the lower
class and imposed heavy fines so that only the elite
can play the sport.

Dance

Dance is defined as the sequence of bodily

movement moving rhythmically usually to music. Often
time it is an avenue in releasing energy, expressing an
idea of intense emotion or simply having fun in the
movement itself. Ancient history tells us that dance is a
form of religious ceremony which people believe it’s their
way to communicate gods and understand the world
around them. Such dance like Hindu’s “Bharata
Nhatyam” which still perform until this day.

The earliest evidence on the origin of dance

pinpoint in 9000-year-old India’s or 5300-year-old
Egypt’s cave paintings. The Renaissance period brought
a huge evolution in dancing. The introduction of ballet
and social dancing changed the belief of people from ceremonial to entertainment to
seduction. In the Philippines, dances were designed to honor gods and
thanksgiving/asking for rain and harvest.

Today, dance morphed into different varieties (hip hop, Ballet, Jazz, Ballroom
dances, folk dances etc.) and can be performed in different functions (competition,
social, ceremonial).

Did you know?

That there’s an epidemic called the Dance Plague

in 1518? A woman named Fru suddenly stepped into the
street and began to dance unstoppably for days and
within a week more than 30 people were inflicted the
same way. They kept going to the point they injured
themselves and some of them even died.

you observe proper social distancing.

Outdoor recreation aims to give leisure AS YOU INTERACT WITH the natural

Activity 4: Let’s Read
It has been known that dancing is older than written language. Historians
believe that the ancient people used dancing as a ritual and in social celebration.
These acts are essential factors in the evolution of early human civilizations. Through
time, dances evolved as a by-product of human imagination from a simple ritual
ceremony to a complicated dance competition. Below are the different genres of
dances

1. Ballet. A classical dance form that needs grace and precision and engaging
formalized steps and gestures set in complex, flowing designs to create
expression through movement. Some of the dance terms are Arabesque,
chasśe, pivot, avant, balanće, ballerina, and frappe

2. Contemporary. This expressive dance style is a combination of several

dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

3. Traditional/Cultural dance. Commonly called Folk dances, give identity to

the community/place cultures and beliefs. It is more than social activities
rather than competition. Here are some Philippine folk dance terms: Sarok,
salok, hayon-hayon, brush steps, slides steps. Other international folk
dances:
Japanese parasol, Khorovod (Rusia), Red River Jig (USA), Bóndadagur
(Iceland) and Frisky (Scotland)

4. Ballroom. A type of social dancing, originally from Europe and the United
States, it is performed by couples and follows prescribed steps. Ballroom
dancing is categories by Standard dance (Waltz, foxtrot, tango, quick step, and
Viennese Waltz) and Latin (Rumba-Cuba, Samba-Brazil, Chachacha-Cuba,
Mambo-Cuba, Paso Doble -Spain, etc.)

5. Hip Hop. Also known as street or urban dance. A popular dance originated in
the streets of New York. Examples of Hip Hop dances are break dance (perform
an energetic and acrobatic style of street dancing, typically to hip-hop or funk
music), B-boying, Krumping (Dance characterized by rapid, exaggerated
movements of the arms and legs). Popping and Locking (like contracting or
tightening your body parts into certain positions), funk and up rock.

Physical Fitness Components in Dancing:

1. Cardiovascular Fitness – When you dance, your heart rate increases, the
faster your heart beats when dancing the more blood enters to your lungs
to collect oxygen and send it to your tissues.

2. Muscular Endurance- Regular dance workout enhances the endurance of

body muscles. The more the muscle being repeatedly used the more it works in
the extended time.

3. Flexibility- dancing involves motion and movements. This allows the muscles
to flex properly. Also, it helps the body to be nimble.

5
CO_Q4_PE 9_ Module 4
4. Muscular Strength – Muscular strength provides a good support for the
dancer’s joints and to increase position stability.

Summary:
At the start of the pandemic, people throughout the world were terrorized by
an invisible enemy. People were scared and helpless. As months go by, humankind
learns to adapt to the change, humans discover a good avenue to stay healthy and
stay anxiety free though dancing. Also, people realized that even if they are
constrained at home they can still develop and enhance physical fitness
components (muscular endurance and strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness,
coordination, agility and balance) by dancing alone or with the family.

Once again, dancing proved it’s important in different situations in life.

When we are in “stay at home” we stay connected through virtual dancing (FB,
TITOK). When our body is being threatened, we become strong because we choose
to be fit. Even our history could attest what good it brings to dance a way- a form of
mediation and worship.

What Is It

Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all

ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the
environment.

Riding to work is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular

exercise with your everyday routine.

Cycling is one of the easiest and fun ways to avoid diseases caused by a
sedentary lifestyle.

Cycling and Fitness

Cardiovascular Endurance. Cycling raises your heart rate and gets the blood
pumping round your body, and it burns calories, limiting the chance of your
being overweight. As a result, it's among a selection of forms of exercise
recommended by the NHS as being healthy ways to cut your risk of developing
major illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

Muscular Strength and Endurance. Cycling uses major muscles in the body thus
providing an overall muscle workout. It helps tone the core muscles important in
improving body posture.

Flexibility. In cycling joint mobility is improved

Health Benefits of Regular Cycling

Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood
vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and
experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness
level.

The health benefits of regular cycling include:

• increased cardiovascular fitness
• increased muscle strength and flexibility
• improved joint mobility
• decreased stress levels
• improved posture and coordination
• strengthened bones
• decreased body fat levels
• prevention or management of disease
• reduced anxiety and depression.

5 CO_Q4_PE9_Module 6
Obesity and Weight Control
Cycling is a good way to control or reduce weight, as it raises your metabolic
rate, builds muscle and burns body fat. If you’re trying to lose weight, cycling must
be combined with a healthy eating plan.
Research suggests you should be burning at least 8,400 kilojoules (about
2,000 calories) a week through exercise. Steady cycling burns about 1,200
kilojoules (about 300 calories) per hour.

Cardiovascular Disease and Cycling

Cycling strengthens your heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood
fat levels. Research also shows that people who cycle to work have two to three
times less exposure to pollution than car commuters, so their lung function is
improved.

Bone Injuries, Arthritis and Cycling

Cycling improves strength, balance and coordination. It may also help to
prevent falls and fractures. Riding a bike is an ideal form of exercise if you have
osteoarthritis, because it is a low-impact exercise that places little stress on joints.

Lesson Active Recreation
1 (Outdoor Activity: Hiking)

What does this "new normal" bring us? The most effective method to modify
what's going on is by one way or another adjusting to what was normally accustomed.
It takes a ton of patience and alteration in the general framework or system of the
family, and community all in all. With the “new normal” it expects us to set new
social gauges that will assist us with getting by with the current circumstance. The
pandemic gives us an idea to focus on each and every detail of how to deal with
ourselves, how to consider the government assistance of others and how to follow the
community’s wellbeing.
The initial three months of the pandemic estimates the quality of community
health projects and collaboration of the people. With the circumstance, we had the
option to decide the adequacy of the all-around planned health programs. At the
point when the enhanced community quarantined, it was seen that a few were into
watching the sound way of life. Some got occupied with outdoor exercises, for
example, cycling, hiking, running exercises among others.
The following activities will help you determine the health benefits of hiking
activity.

What’s In

Activity 1: Ready-Set-Go!
Objective:
To identify the fitness components involved in a hiking activity.
Procedure:
1. Fill in the table below.

Skills needed Fitness components involved

What’s New

Activity 2: What to do!

List all the things that one should prepare for a hike.

Objective:
To identify the things that you will consider when planning a hiking activity.

What’s Is It

Hiking is an activity of moderate difficulty, which involves walking across long

distances generally on trails or paths. The duration of the activity varies between
short half-day programs and longer itineraries of over 20 days. It is usually an
activity that allows groups of different sizes.

Hiking and trekking are two terms sometimes used indistinctly. The difference
between each of them is usually the duration of the specific activity. Hiking is
associated with shorter programs, while trekking is used to describe longer programs
of a week or more.
Hiking is also a great way to immerse yourself in the culture and history of a
country or area. Longer programs will take you to experience local communities and
taste unique local food. Hiking is where the trail meets the people, and mountain
sports meet cultural adventure.

Three Different Types of Hiking…

1. Day Hiking
This type of hike refers to a hike that does not exceed daylight hours. It can be
anything from a simple walk in a natural environment.
This type of hike is perfect for beginners who want to work their way up to more
adventurous trails.

2. Summit Hiking
Summit hiking is considered to be the most rewarding hikes a person can take.
As the name implies, it involves surmounting the summit or peak of a mountain, an
objective that is as challenging as it is fulfilling.
The main aim of this pastime is to reach as many summits as possible (such as
hills and mountains).

3. Long-Distance Hiking
This refers to a long-distance hike that can take weeks and even a couple of
months to traverse.

Hiking outdoors has plenty of perks: nice views, fresh air, and the sounds and
smells of nature.

It is good for you, too. Hiking is a powerful cardio workout that can:
• Lower your risk of heart disease
• Improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
• Boost bone density, since walking is a weight-bearing exercise
• Build strength in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in
your hips and lower legs
• Strengthen your core
• Improve balance
• Help control your weight
• Boost your mood. Hiking is one of the activities that can combat stress and
anxiety.

What equipment do you need?

This will depend on the duration of the program, and especially if it is an over-night
program or not. Generally, you will need:
• Two different pairs of shoes: a pair of strong and waterproof hiking shoes, and
a lighter pair (sneakers or sandals)
• Rain and windproof jacket and pants
• Sun cream
• Sunglasses
• Hat or cap
• 35 or 40 litre backpack (you usually need to carry your own equipment, unless
it is a longer hike in which case there are sometimes porters)
• Water bottle
• Walking poles
• Head lamp
