             What I Need to Know
This module was written and designed to make learning easier especially as we are in
the New Normal situation. As an educational tool, this module about Teenage Issues
and Concerns: Sexual Identity and Identity Crisis challenges you as a learner, to
become creative, resourceful and independent. The scope of the module provides a

Growing up in the modern world can be a frightening, exciting and dangerous
experience. Teens today will face many challenges as they grow toward adulthood. The
issues may not seem like a big deal to some parents, but for teenagers they are very
important issues that affect them in numerous ways. Hence, guidance of parents and
teachers are very vital in helping them to cope with these problems.
In this lesson, you will understand the concept of sexual identity, stages of identity,
and the different reasons why most teenagers are prone to experience identity crisis.
Knowing these will enable you to help yourself and others on dealing teenage concern.

                 What is it
                                           Sexual Identity and Identity Crisis
One of the teenage concerns nowadays is their sexual identity. This diagram shows the
three integral components of sexual identity such as gender identity, sexual orientation

and romantic or affectional orientation. This will help you better understand the
different issues related to sexuality specifically identity crisis.
What Is an Identity Crisis?
Theorist Erikson coined the term identity crisis and believed that it was one of the most
important conflicts people face in development. According to Erikson, an identity crisis is a
time of intensive analysis and exploration of different ways of looking at oneself.
In Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, the emergence of an identity crisis occurs
during the teenage years in which people struggle with feelings of identity versus role
confusion.
Webster defines an identity crisis      as “a feeling of unhappiness and confusion caused by
not being sure about what type of       person you really are or what the true purpose of your
life is.” Although an identity crisis   can occur at any age, they are supremely important to
address in the teen years because       of the profound affect they ca have that carries on into
adulthood.
Why does identity crisis occur in teenage years?
What makes an identity crisis so intense in the teenage years is that these are the
years teens are already going through significant and confusing changes. Puberty is
hitting, hormones are raging, school work is getting more demanding and
extracurricular activities are becoming more frequent. (hammondpsychology.com)
Other Causes…
People tend to experience them at various points throughout life, particularly at points of
great change, including:
  •   Beginning a new relationship                     •   Losing a loved one
  •   Ending a marriage or partnership                 •   Losing or starting a job
  •   Experiencing a traumatic event                   •   Learning about a health condition
  •   Having a child
Four Identity Stages (According to psychologist James Marcia)
1. Diffusion - occurs when there is neither an identity crisis nor commitment.
   (“I don’t know, and I don’t care what I’m supposed to do with my life.”)
2. Foreclosure- occurs when a person has made a commitment without attempting
   identity exploration.
   (“I’ve made a choice without thinking.”)
3. Moratorium- is the status of a person who is actively involved in exploring different
   identities, but has not made a commitment.
   (“I’m thinking about what I should do.”)
4. Achievement- attained when the person has solved the identity issues by making
   commitments to goals, beliefs, and values after extensive exploration of different
   areas.
   (“I thought about it and I now know what I should do with my life.”)
  Let us unlock some terms to help you fully understand the concept of sexual identity
  and identity crisis.
      • Gender identity- is one’s internal experience of their gender.
      • Identity Crisis- a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person's
         sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected
         aims or role in society.
      • Bisexual- sexually attracted not exclusively to people of one particular gender
         but attracted to both men and women.
      • Homosexual-a person who is sexually attracted to people of their own sex.
      • Heterosexual- sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex.
      • Sexual orientation- is to whom we are sexually and romantically attracted.
      • Romantic orientation- also called affectional orientation, indicates the sex
         or gender with which a person is most likely to have a romantic relationship or
         fall in love.
