VIII. Key Concepts Trends in Periodic Table of elements
Electronegativity, symbolized as χ, is the tendency of an atom to attract
shared electrons (or electron density) to itself. An atom's electronegativity is
affected by both its atomic number and the distance at which its valence electrons
reside from the charged nucleus.
Ionization energy is the quantity of energy that an isolated, gaseous atom in
the ground electronic state must absorb to discharge an electron, resulting in
a cation. H(g)→H+(g)+e− This energy is usually expressed in kJ/mol, or the
amount of energy it takes for all the atoms in a mole to lose one electron each.
The atomic radius of a chemical element is a measure of the size of its atoms,
usually the mean or typical distance from the center of the nucleus to the
boundary of the surrounding shells of electrons.
Metallic character refers to the level of reactivity of a metal. Non-metallic
character relates to the tendency to accept electrons during chemical
reactions. Metallic tendency increases going down a group. Non-metallic
tendency increases going from left to right across the periodic table.
IX. 7E Model TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
Approach
ELICIT Connect previous
lesson to the past lesson through
soliciting ideas the students.
PRIKA (Prior Good morning, class! Good morning, Sir!
Knowledge Activity)
How are you today? We’re good, sir.
Before we start our new lesson, let’s Yes, sir.
have a brief review of the concepts that
we discussed last meeting. To do this,
we will have an activity using a
jamboard. You can access it using the
link sent in th chatbox. Are you ready?
You just need to drag each symbols of
elements if it belongs to metals, non
metals or semi metals. You have 5
minutes to do it. Are you ready? Yes, sir.
You may start
Are you done?
Very good. It seems that you still Yes, sir.
remember how to classify the elements
base from its location in the periodic
table of elements.
ENGAGE Peak students’
interest and get them personally
involved in the lesson while
eliciting ideas.
Our next activity is called “guest the
word”. You need to unscramble this
words. You have 5 minutes to do this.
Is that clear? Yes, sir.
1. C I L L A T E M
2. S O I N
3. E C N E L A V
4. E L E N O R T
5. I U S R A D
What is the first word? Metallic, sir.
Correct, how about the second one? Sir, I think it’s ion.
Very good. How about number 3? Valence, sir
Good. Who wants to answer number 4 Electron sir.
And lastly…? Sir, its radius
Very good. Now that you already guess
the word, we will encounter those
terms in our discussion.
EXPLORE Get
students directly involved in
the lesson; provide chance to
build their own
understanding.
Now we will discuss. the trends in the
periodic table. What are the properties
of elements in the periodic table? Can
you please read? Properties of elements in Periodic table:
1. Electronegativity
2. Ionization energy
3. Electron affinity
4. Atomic radius
5. Metallic Property
6. Non Metallic Property
7. Electron Affinity
I will show you the trend of these
properties in the periodic table.
Let us discuss this one by one.
EXPLAIN Provide
students with opportunity to
communicate on what they
have learned.
What is a trend? Can you please read?
Before we start to discuss the trends,
why there are trends in the properties of
periodic table f elements? Please read.
Why there is a trend in periodic table? Sir, because of the attraction between
protons and electrons.
Very good. And what re the two main The nuclear charge and the electron
reasons behind the trend? shielding, sir.
ELABORATE
Allow students to
apply what they have
learned to a new
situation and
continue to explore
its implication for
possible extension.
Now this activity is called fill in the Yes, Sir
blanks. You just need to complete the
statement to complete the thought. Is
that clear?
_______________ German chemist
who formed the triads of elements with
similar properties like the triad of
calcium, barium and strontium.
_____________proposed the concept
of octaves in arranging the elements.
Metals are good conductor of
________ and ________. Non-metals
easily gain _______ and form _______
ions. Metals easily ______ electrons
and form positve _____. There are ___
periods and 18 ___ in the Periodic table
of elements. _________ possess both
physical and chemical properties of
metals and non metals.
(After this, some students are ask to (Students answered the questions.)
answer.)
EVALUATE
Determine how much
learning has taken.
It seems that you understand the lesson
well. Now let us answer this:

containing information about the atoms
that
make up all matter?

the left side of the periodic
table?

EXTEND Additional
enrichment activity
to strengthen student
understanding.
The periodic table of the elements is a (Students answers)
very useful organizational tool in
science. What are some organizational
