GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Answer all the questions as honest as you can be. Use SPSS software to answer
the following questions. Do not post this on social media. Do not share this exam for those who are
not enrolled in this subject. Write your answer in short bondpaper (typewritten).
I. Analyze the following situation. Determine the correct/appropriate statistical tool (Pearson,
Spearman, Chi-square, Independent t-test, Paired t-test, ANOVA) for the following scenario. Write
your answer before the number.
__________1. A P.E. instructor advised his students that regular exercise would improve the health and
increase stamina. To prove his claim, he conducted test to 15 students and required them to take 3-km
run. He then asked students to do regular exercise and do some jogging twice a week for a period of
two weeks and asked them again to take the 3-km run. What statistical treatment should use to prove
the claim of the P.E. instructor?
__________2. A photocopy machine shops has 3 photocopy machines of different models: Model A,
Model B and Model C. During the past 3 months, the owner made some tabulations of the average
number of minutes per week each photocopy machines is out of service because of repairs. Decide
whether differences among the three samples can be attributed to chance?
__________3. The HRD head observes that absenteeism is high in the graveyard shift than in the
morning shift. The daily time record of the employees shows the number of their absences for a period
of two weeks. The HRD head use 0.05 significance level to test his claim.
__________5. The Star Health Insurance claims that in year 2018, the average monthly premium paid
for individual health coverage was 10, 000.00 with a variation of 15. Suppose you want to test their
claim, because you are suspicious that the stated average cost is too high. And line with that, you
conducted a study and come up to result of an average monthly income of 9,000.00 from the 93
members of Star Health Insurance. Determine if your idea supported by your collected data.
__________6. A gym instructor wants to determine whether age of a person has something to do with
the number of days that such person engages into exercise. A random sample of 264 persons is
selected and the results are classified and tabulated below. Is there enough evidence to conclude that
age is related to the number of days spent in exercising per week?
__________7. The marketing manager of a business firm claims that by increasing budget for
advertisement will eventually increase their sales. Assuming that the difference is normally distributed,
can we say that the increase in the budget for advertisement will increase sales.
__________8. The Peninsula Electric Company is conducting a study whether the number of house
occupants is related to the amount of monthly electricity bill in a private-single family residence.
__________9. The average IQ for the adult population is 100 with a standard deviation of 15. A
researcher believes this value has changed. The researcher decides to test the IQ of 75 random adults.
The average IQ of the sample is 105. Is there enough evidence to suggest the average IQ has changed?
__________10. The instructor wants to compare between method A and method B style of teaching. A
lesson assessment was given after using each method.
II. Answer the following problems using the five steps of hypothesis testing.
1. Twenty participants were given a list of 20 words to process. The 16 participants were randomly
assigned to one of two treatment conditions. Half were instructed to count the number of vowels in
each word (shallow processing). Half were instructed to judge whether the object described by each
word would be useful if one were stranded on a desert island (deep processing). After a brief distractor
task, all subjects were given a surprise free recall task. The number of words correctly recalled was
recorded for each subject. From the given data below, is there any significant difference between the
two treatment groups?
Shallow 13 12 11 9 11 12 15 10
Deep 5 6 5 4 2 5 4 9
III. Choose one from the given topic below. Create at least three questions finding either the
relationship or difference from your chosen topic. Then you will answer those questions using SPSS
software. Make sure that you will use at least three statistical tools that we have discussed.
● Covid19 patient
● Community Quarantine
● Front liners
● Programs of Government
● ABS-CBN Shutdown
