Topic of Thesis • CENTRE FOR ARTS
                            • A centre for visual and performing arts
Typology of thesis Cultural Architecture
   1. Introduction & Brief Description of the topic:
   • The Issue
The public realm is the most relevant in today’s rapid urbanization. The lack of expression and
human interaction has created a gap between our artistic expressions and thus, our well being. The
Thesis attempts to bridge the gap and create an inclusive artistic dialogue with engagement and
appreciation of different forms of art.
   • Historical and theoretical context
Art forms have been a source of entertainment, story telling and well being since ancient periods
when performances were held in courts of the kings and in commoner courts. With the course of
time, the performance and visual art media were taken to a definitive place where the rich and the
poor could gather, practice or express these media. This have birth to the typology of Centres for
Performance and Visual Arts. Such places became a new medium of expressionism and talk where
people would gather, provoke and protest against the wrongs done and encourage people to fight
for their rights and nation building.
   • Need
A space where general public and artists can come together, express and display their skills, where
anyone can learn and explore this field offering a space that will serve as a creative and social hub
       for the City.
   2. USP of the project
In the era of ever-growing cities, with numerous people migrating to the cities, transport networks
keep expanding. The nodes resulting from these networks need to be appropriately developed for
the citizens, keeping in mind the opportunities in the public realm. I have thus selected one such
Node- a site next to Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, at Delhi University North Campus.
It is a focal point for the public area with an existing metro station, bus stop and the intersection
of the Mall Road and the main road to North Campus. The context is purely institutional and thus
invites potential for student engagement and participation.
SITE AREA: 19,000 sq. m. (5 acres)
Height Restriction: 30 m
Land Use Type: Commercial
    3. Aim & Objectives
    • A development that creates an active public zone and provides opportunities for artistic
        expressions, engagement and leisure.
    • An architectural expression and character that exudes the characteristics of art and is harmonious
with the language of public realm
    • An Urban fabric which reinterprets Art in today’s society and enhances the context of North
        Campus.
    Why Art?
Art is not only creation, but also interpretation and communication. Art can bring awareness to people. It is a
powerful means of presenting truth about humankind that cannot be expressed any other way. Art also connects
society by presenting an idea that everyone can relate to in a universal way. Art has the ability to stimulate
people’s imagination and creativity. Art has the possibility of making society better and for that, it must reach
    the public.
