STEAM JET REFRIGERATION

There is a 5.0 m3/s of vapor leaving the evaporator of vacuum refrigeration system. The
warm water enters the evaporator at 20C and make up water enters the evaporator at
31C. the evaporator has a temperature of 5C. Determine the refrigerating capacity.

ANSWER:

31C
20C

5C

V = 5.0 m3/s
h1 = hf @ 5C = 20.98 kj/kg
h4 = hf @ 31C = 129.948 kj/kg
h3 = hg @ 5C = 2510.54 kj/kg
v = vg @ 5C = 147.118 m3/kg
Z = V/v = 5/147.118 = 0.0339 kg/s
Q = Z(h3 h4) = 0.0339(2510.54 129.948)
= 80.7020 KW

An evaporator is maintained at 10C. Warm water the evaporator at 15C while make-up
water enters at 25C. Suppose the system is a steam jet refrigeration system having 35
tons capacity. Find the volume of vapor leaving the evaporator.

ANSWER:

10C
25C

15C

h3 = hg @ 10C = 2519.74 kj/kg

h4 = hf @ 25C = 104.87 kj/kg
v = vg @ 10C = 106.377 m3/kg
3.52 KW
Q = 35 tonsx
= 123.2 KW
1 Ton
Z = Q/(h3 h4) = 123.2/(2519.74 104.87)
= 0.0510 kg/s
V = Zxv = 0.0510 x 106.377
= 5.4252 m3/s

A steam jet refrigeration having an evaporator maintained at 5C with a make-up water at

25C. The chilled water has the same temperature as the evaporator and warm water
enters at 17C. Find the refrigerating effect if 0.93 kg/s of make-up water enters the
evaporator.

ANSWER:

5C
17C

25C,0.93kg/s

h1 = hf @ 5C = 20.98 kj/kg
h2 = hf @ 17C = 71.364 kj/kg
h3 = hg @ 5C = 2510.54 kj/kg
h4 = hf @ 25C = 104.87 kj/kg
Z = 0.93 kg/s
v = vf @ 25C = 0.0010014 m3/kg
Q = Z(h3 h4) = 0.93(2510.54 104.87)
= 22.3727 KW

There are removed 5.06 m3/s of vapor from the water evaporator of a vacuum
refrigeration system; the warm water enters the evaporator at 15 oC and chilled water
leaves at 11 oC; make-up water enters at 30oC. Determine the refrigerating capacity.

ANSWER:
v3 = vg@11oC = 100.6866 m3/kg
h3 = hg@11oC = 2521.574 kJ/kg
h4 = hf@30oC = 125.77 kJ/kg
z = V3 / v3
z = 5.06 / 100.6866
z = 0.050255 kg/s
Qa = z(h3 h4)
Qa = 0.050255 (2521.574 125.77)
Qa = 120.4 kW

In a steam jet refrigeration system, the evaporator is maintained at 5 oC. The chilled water
leaves at the same temperature and warms to 10 oC as it absorbs the load. Make-up water
is available at 25oC. For a capacity of 50 tons, determine (a) the quantity of chilled water
required, and (b) the volume of vapor removed. (a) Solving for quantity of chilled water
=m.

ANSWER:
for chilled water:
h1 = hf@5oC = 20.98 kJ/kg
for warm water:
h2 = hf@10oC = 41.99 kJ/kg
Qa = m (h2 h1)

50 (3.516) = m (41.99 - 20.98)

m = 8.367 kg/s
b.) Solving for the volume of vapor removed = V 3
for vapor:
h3 = hg@5oC = 2510.54 kJ/kg
v3 = vg@5oC = 147.118 m3/kg
for make-up water:
h4 = hf@25oC = 104.87 kJ/kg
z (h3 h4) = Qa
z (2510.54 104.87) = 50 (3.516)
z = 0.073077 kg/s
V3 = zv3 = 0.073077 (147.118) = 10.75 m3/s
