    LOVE

    Ode To Poco

    She was an old lady

    When she came to me

    Twenty-five, that’s old

    For a horse you see

    She had lived her life

    In the mountains of Colorado

    And came to me for

    The golden years in Texas

    Little did we know

    That in retirement

    She would bring

    Light, excitement, education, and guidance

To a woman needing her to see

To a woman needing to believe

Oh, ho her name Poco La Blue

She came from a famous family too

Dappled grey with a birthday in May

    A 1985 model she was a lady

    Delicate, determined, and true

A lady who taught me much

She came to me a blessing as such

When I was not so long in tooth

But neither were my eyes at my knees

    Now I’m in the middle

    And Poco has gone on

Paving the way as mares do

    Lighting the path

    Our journey not through

I know not much of her history

    Of her life before me

    Only what has followed

    Since our meet cute

In a kill pen in shiner Texas

    Then for 10 years

    She was by my side

    She was my eyes

    my ears

    my life guide

She took me places to my surprise

    Not atop a saddle

    But side by side

As she taught me her ways

    I grew to know mine

    Poco taught me you see

    To tread deep waters carefully

    To step gingerly through bogs

    To back with dignity

    To gallop wildly through fields

    To keep eyes forward

    To listen ears keen

Poco taught me healing and caring

    Medicines for my mind

    That took away the scales

    That had kept me blind

This lady, my mare, my Poco, gave clear

Voice to this human you see standing here

    Not bereaved by her loss

    But……Holding lessons near

    Treading carefully, stepping gingerly

    Backing dignified, galloping wildly
