Because very little is known about heterosexual identity development, this study assesses and describes sexual orientation questioning processes of heterosexual-identified women and offers a comparison of these processes with those employed by their sexual-minority counterparts. Participants included 333 female college students (ages 18–23; M = 19.2): 228 participants primarily identified as “exclusively straight/heterosexual,” and 105 participants indicated a sexual-minority identity. Sixty-seven percent of exclusively heterosexual respondents (n = 154) indicated having thought about or questioned their sexual orientation. The processes by which heterosexual participants described questioning their sexual orientation were coded for the presence of five emergent categories using an inductive thematic coding methodology. These five categories included unelaborated questioning (19%), other-sex experiences (16%), exposure to sexual minorities (26%), assessment of same-sex attraction (48%), and evaluations of same-sex behavior (26%). Several unifying and differentiating themes emerged between sexual orientation groups. Results from this study suggest that contemporary young women's heterosexuality is not necessarily an unexamined identity; indeed, the large majority of young women in this sample were deliberately identifying as heterosexual after contemplating alternative possibilities.

This Review outlines the understanding and management of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC shares morphological and genetic abnormalities with basal-like breast cancer (BLBC), a subgroup of breast cancer defined by gene-expression profiling. However, TNBC and BLBC tumors are heterogeneous and overlap is incomplete. Breast cancers found in BRCA1 mutation carriers are also frequently triple negative and basal like. TNBC and BLBC occur most frequently in young women, especially African Americans, and tend to exhibit aggressive, metastatic behavior. These tumors respond to conventional chemotherapy but relapse more frequently than hormone receptor-positive, luminal subtypes and have a worse prognosis. This study explores the experiences of young women struggling for political participation in Nigeria, taking the case study of the pressure by the NTYTR (Not Too Young To Run) movement for the passage of the Age Reduction bill in Nigeria. In 2018, the Bill was successfully passed through the Nigerian Parliament and came into force after two years of a successful youth-led social movement. The age for running for various political offices was reduced, for the House of Representative and State House of Assemblies from 30 years to 25 and President from 40 to 35.
Young people across Nigeria collaborate to ensure the Bill was passed, during the 2019 election, more male youth entered politics as a result, but women youth and older women were left behind in the process despite playing a key role in the movement. The study explores how and why this happened and seeks to find a remedy to make lower age provisions work for young women as well as young men. Based on semistructured interviews, two thirds with young women, one third with young men, and a focus group discussion, as well as observation, the study opened the debate with over 40 young people, with a focus on women and gender issues.
