Exposure to media images of thin-and-beautiful women negatively affects the body image and mood states of young women. However, not all women are equally susceptible to these effects. The present experimental investigation with 123 young college women evaluated the moderating effects of the extent of internalization of media ideals. It also examined the preventative impact of two brief interventions (i.e., media literacy information with and without a dissonance-induction procedure). Results indicated that relative to a control group, the exposure to thin-and-beautiful media images adversely influenced the state body image of participants with high internalization levels. Media-literacy psychoeducation prior to the media exposure prevented this adverse effect. Adding a pre-exposure dissonance-induction procedure did not significantly enhance the preventative effects relative to psychoeducation alone. These results and their implications for the treatment and prevention of body image disturbances are discussed in the context of the empirical literature on the media's effects on body image.

We drew on Foucault's notion of ‘practices of the self’ to examine how young people take up, negotiate, and resist the imperatives of a public health discourse concerned with the relationships between health, fitness, and the body. We did this through a discussion of the ways young women and men talk about their own and others' bodies, in the context of a number of in-depth interviews conducted for the Life Activity Project, a study of the place and meaning of physical activity in young people's lives, funded by an Australian Research Council Grant. We found that the young women and men in the study engaged the health/fitness discourse very differently: for the young men, health conflated with fitness as an embodied capacity to do physical work; and for the young women, health was a much more difficult and complex project associated with managing and monitoring practices associated with eating and exercise to maintain an ‘appropriate’ body shape.

This study explores the experiences of young women struggling for political participation in Nigeria, taking the case study of the pressure by the NTYTR (Not Too Young To Run) movement for the passage of the Age Reduction bill in Nigeria. In 2018, the Bill was successfully passed through the Nigerian Parliament and came into force after two years of a successful youth-led social movement. The age for running for various political offices was reduced, for the House of Representative and State House of Assemblies from 30 years to 25 and President from 40 to 35.
Young people across Nigeria collaborate to ensure the Bill was passed, during the 2019 election, more male youth entered politics as a result, but women youth and older women were left behind in the process despite playing a key role in the movement. The study explores how and why this happened and seeks to find a remedy to make lower age provisions work for young women as well as young men. Based on semistructured interviews, two thirds with young women, one third with young men, and a focus group discussion, as well as observation, the study opened the debate with over 40 young people, with a focus on women and gender issues.

This Review outlines the understanding and management of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC shares morphological and genetic abnormalities with basal-like breast cancer (BLBC), a subgroup of breast cancer defined by gene-expression profiling. However, TNBC and BLBC tumors are heterogeneous and overlap is incomplete. Breast cancers found in BRCA1 mutation carriers are also frequently triple negative and basal like. TNBC and BLBC occur most frequently in young women, especially African Americans, and tend to exhibit aggressive, metastatic behavior. These tumors respond to conventional chemotherapy but relapse more frequently than hormone receptor-positive, luminal subtypes and have a worse prognosis. New systemic therapies are urgently needed as most patients with TNBC and/or BLBC relapse with distant metastases, and hormonal therapies and HER2-targeted agents are ineffective in this group of tumors. Feminist scholars have begun to unpack the ways in which neoliberalism is underpinned by particular gendered affective investments: drives for perfection (Angela McRobbie 2015), confidence (Rosalind Gill and Shani Orgad 2015), and the careful observance of feeling rules mandating a pleasing balance of resilience and approachability (Akane Kanai 2017a). In this context, we are interested in mapping the cultural production of affective dissonances (Clare Hemmings 2012) with neoliberal modes of thriving. We draw attention to post-recessional television made by and about young women that articulate affective dissonances with the confident subjectivities associated with neoliberal cultural mythologies of girlpower. We suggest that within recent, largely US, television some important questioning of such mythologies is taking place through the articulation of young women’s anger, insecurity, anxiety, and misplaced confidence. Such affective dissonances may to some extent serve to problematise myths about both the accessibility and appeal of highly individualist career-oriented lifestyles idealised in cultural mythologies of powerful “can-do” girls (Anita Harris 2004). Our analysis aims at two-fold consideration of: first, how giving voice to young women as “suffering actors” (Harris and Dobson 2015) may open space for dissonant affective positions that connect to feminist aims of social transformation (Hemmings 2012); and second, consideration of the ways in which exclusionary technologies of femininity may also operate through representations of young women’s anger, insecurity, and anxiety. Through this analysis we contribute to understanding dialectical tensions in the psychic and affective life of postfeminism and feminine subjectification in the neoliberal, post-recessional socio-cultural context.
