Valery Bryusov

"D'un espace deployé", pour soprano lyrique, deux pianos et deux groupes d’orchestre de 1972-73, représente l’un des moments forts de la musique de Gilbert Amy. Le propos de cette intervention sera de montrer à travers l’étude de ses esquisses comment l’œuvre fut conçue et élaborée progressivement et sur quels critères reposait particulièrement la démarche compositionnelle de cette musique. Quelques notes synthétiques du compositeur, rédigées après la création de l’œuvre, permettront aussi de compléter certaines des orientations perceptibles dans les pages d’esquisses.

В книге собраны материалы, имеющие отношение к оккультным увлечениям В. Я. Брюсова — принципиально важной и во многом определяющей стороне его литературного и личностного облика. Впервые в полном объеме публикуются записи спиритических сеансов 1893 г., дополненные извлечениями из дневников 1892-1903 гг., касающимися спиритизма. Впервые републикованы многие статьи, рецензии и заметки, посвященные спиритизму и общим вопросам эзотеризма, в том числе цикл из пяти статей «Спиритизм до Рочестерских стуков». В книгу включены также статьи об Агриппе Неттесгеймском и работа «Предсказания Нострадама о современной войне». Издание снабжено подробными комментариями и сопроводительными материалами.

Bryusov and Hokusai: A Note on One Erotic Image
This article concerns the likely source of an erotic image from Valery Bryusov’s hoax poem collection Stikhi Nelli (Nelli’s Poems). It shows that the image of an octopus copulating with a woman in the culmination of the poem “Nochnoi ropot” (“Night Murmur”), is related to Japanese erotic engravings (shunga), and originates from Hokusai’s woodblock print “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife” (1814). Thus, the source established supports the idea that shunga inspired European modernist poetry in its search for a new erotic language.

In the context of the problem of mythologism and mythopoeia in the poetry of V. Bryusov, the article analyzes two poems. On the example of the poem “The Death of Alexander”, the characteristic tendency of the synthesis of mythology and history of V. Bryusov's poetry is considered. The poem “The Thread of Ariadne” is considered from the point of view of mythopoeia in Bryusov's poetry. The general early symbolic context is also shown, within which, Bryusov’s mythopoeia develops. Particular attention is paid to the work “The Teachers of the Teachers”, which reveals the role of myth in the artistic consciousness of the poet.

The article dwells on the correlation issue of different composition and structure in poem corpuses by Alexander Blok with the identical headline "Verses about the Beautiful Lady" in the light of the problem of studying the poetic myth about the Beautiful Lady.
The correlation between the book "Verses about the Beautiful Lady" by Blok and the identically entitled central section of the "approved" first volume of Blok's lyrics is observed in this context. Particular attention is paid to the history of the title, which is associated with the publication of a cycle of 10 poems in the almanac "Northern Flowers", as well as Valery Brusov’s possible participation in choosing the title when publishing this cycle.

The article continues the publication of Valery Bryusov's journals and for the first tme presents the fragment of the diary of 1891, where Bryusov describes in detail his current affairs. During this period, Bryusov studies at the Polivanov Gymnasium, wrutes poetry and prose, and organizes literary evenings. The first attempts to systematize his own compositions lead to the creation of a series of notebooks "My poems." In these notebooks, Bryusov wrote down not only his works, but often gave also a biographical notes. These notes are given in the preface to this publication, and poems are indicated in the comments to the journal entries. The authors not only tried to decipher the entire textual material, but also compared the text with the material prepared for publication by the poet's wife, I.M. Bryusova. The publication is provided with a preface and a detailed historical and literary commentary.

В статье впервые дан обзор пяти инскриптов В.Я. Брюсова из фондов Государственной публичной исторической библиотеки. Четыре автографа (А.М. Добролюбову, И.А. Бунину, С.П. Бартеневу, В.С. Терьяну) ранее не публиковались. Представленные надписи содержательны и нетипичны для обыкновенно сдержанного В.Я. Брюсова: они уточняют детали биографии поэта, дают представление о его взаимоотношениях с адресатами инскриптов и др. В целом выявленные автографы являются ценным источником для реконструкции отдельных фрагментов истории русской литературы начала ХХ в.

The article provides an overview of five inscriptions of V.Ya. Bryusov from the State Public Library for History collection. Four autographs (addressed to A.M. Dobrolyubov, I.A. Bunin, S.P. Bartenev, V.S. Teryan) were not published before. The inscriptions are informative and not typical for V.Ya. Bryusov, they clarify the details of the poet’s biography, give an idea of his relationships with the addressees, etc. In general, the autographs are a valuable source for the reconstruction of certain fragments of the history of Russian literature of the early 20th century.

В статье рассматриваются основные биографические источники сведений о Тимуре, к которым мог обращаться Кристофер Марло при работе над пьесой «Тамерлан» и которые повлияли на создание образа протагониста, в особенности его внешности. Хотя более аутентичные восточные источники не были известны в Европе в переводах до XVII в., Марло был доступен довольно широкий набор европейских исторических текстов (Халкокондил, Боден, Мехиа, Фрегозо, Биццарри и др.) Подробное описание внешности Тамерлана было известно Марло по трактату Пьетро Перондини «Жизнь Тамерлана Великого, императора скифов». В статье проводится сопоставление поэтического текста Марло с описанием Перондини, что позволяет продемонстрировать, какие ключевые характеристики Марло непосредственно заимствует у историка (рост, физическая сила, взгляд), а какие представляют собой более сложное соединение нескольких традиций.

Korovin, V.L. Lomonosov in the Bobrov’s poem “Chersoninda”: To the question of “scientific poetry”. In: Literaturovedcheskii Zhurnal, 2011, No. 29, pp. 250-258. (In Russ.)

В дидактико-описательной поэме о Крымском олуострове «Херсонида» (1804; в 1-й ред. «Таврида», 1798) Бобров, стремясь сочетать поэтический вымысел с точностью сообщаемых сведений, использовал разные естественнонаучные сочинения. Среди них «Слово о явлениях воздушных» Ломоносова, которому Бобров следует в описании грозы и сопровождающих ее атмосферных явлений;здесь же Ломоносов появляется как персонаж – впервые в русской литературе. Автор «Херсониды» предвосхитил принципы «научной поэзии», обсуждавшиеся
в нач. XX в. (В.Я. Брюсов и др.).

В публикациях последнего десятилетия, посвященных биографии Валерия Брюсова, указывается на необходимость продолжить разыскания, чтобы вы-яснить судьбу героини 14-го сонета «Рокового ряда» М.В. Вульфарт. Ее поэтический образ также постоянно присутствует в любовной лирике Брюсова 1914–1915 гг., того периода, когда поэт и его подруга были особенно близки. История взаимоотношений Брюсова и М.В. Вульфарт уже исследована, прежде всего, по материалам его архива, но до сих пор не получалось проследить ее судьбу после расставания с Брюсовым. Сде-лать это удалось при работе над данной статьей, за счет использования впервые вво-димых в оборот источников из других архивов (в России и ЮАР), генеалогических баз данных, а также интервью с родственниками Вульфарт. Установлено, что Вульфарт эмигрировала в Южную Африку в 1920-е гг., но не оставляла надежды вернуться в Рос-сию и встретиться с вдовой Брюсова. Выявлены причины не раз отмеченной исследова-телями «интонации нервической навязчивости», которая задавала эмоциональный фон отношений Брюсова и Вульфарт. Изложены основные события жизни героини 14-го со-нета, а также уточнены и дополнены сведения относительно ее взаимоотношений с по-этом, содержащиеся в ранее опубликованных статьях о ней.

Valery Bryusov’s “Unnamed” Muse. A South African Epilogue

In the past ten years, biographers of Valery Bryusov pointed out that it was necessary to continue research into the life of M.V. Wulffahrt, to whom Bryusov dedicated the fourteenth sonnet of his Fatal Set. Her image permeated Bryusov’s love poems in 1914–1915, the period when he was particularly close with her. The histo-ry of their relationship was thoroughly researched by analysing their correspondence preserved in the Russian State Library. However, until now, scholars were unable to extend her biography past the end of her love affair with Bryusov. The task has been accomplished by using sources from other archives in Russia and South Africa, which are being introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time, as well as genealogi-cal databases and interviews with Wulffahrt’s family members. It has been established that Wulffahrt immigrated to South Africa in the 1920s but did not give up the hope of returning to her native country and meeting Bryusov’s widow. The article explains the reason for the ‘anxious obsessiveness’ of Wulffahrt’s attitude towards Bryusov, which has been repeatedly noted by scholars, and sets the emotional background of the rela-tionship between the poet and his last muse. The most important events in Wulffahrt’s life are identified and described, and several aspects of her relationship with Bryusov as well as her presence in his work that were mentioned in the literature on this sub-ject are clarified.

The article is devoted to the review of the epistolary book of Valery Bryusov and Nina Petrovskaya "Correspondence" as a double ego-document with a gender representation. The author traces the development of the relations between the "kinetic characters" of this "text of life", in which the intimate side of the novel story of Bryusov and Petrovskaya is represented. The metaphorical concept of "gender mirror" is introduced, based on the statement of Virginia Woolf on the relationship of the sexes. It is defined as this concept realized by Bryusov and Petrovskaya in correspondence.

The article deals with reminiscences and allusions of faustiany in
the novel Bryusov “The Fiery Angel”. The episode where Ruprecht
meets Faust and Mephistopheles has a great concern, which is defined
by the authors game with the reader, and the desire to recreate the cultural and historical picture of the sixteenth century in Germany and
match the atmosphere of the Reformation period, with ideological
and religious search of the early twentieth century in Russia. A paral- lel pursued by the author of abetween Ruprecht and Faust empha- sizes that the pursuit of heroes realize maximalist man’s desire to gain
power over the world, to expand the horizons of their knowledge is
closely connected with the love-passion, which is to become a guide
to the “dark” in the symbolist novel concept.

The article describes the structure, motivation and interpretation of love triangles that represent forms of heroes relationship in V. Bryusov 's novel «The Fiery Angel» and the novel «The last pages of the diary of women». The characteristics of the love triangles are allocated that are conventionally presented as classical and non-classical, as well as their presence in the Russian literature of the XIX century. The game of reminiscence is traced by the author and heroes V. Bryusov correlation with heroes F. M. Dostoevsky («The Idiot» novel and the novel «The Eternal Husband») in the image of the triangular relationship.

This article suggests a literary analysis of " Renata's End " , a memoir essay written by V. Khodasevich (1928), one of the key examples for understanding the particular nature of Russian symbolism. It is focused on the interpretation that Khoda-sevich gave to Petrovskaya's life abroad. The author of the memoir looks at the life of his character through the prism of a symbolist life-creation (zhiznetvorcheskaya) model based on the concept of doppelgangers, or doubles. Simultaneously, the author's commentary of Petrovskaya'a life abroad is related directly to his own arduous experience as an émigré. In other words, in the article " Renata's End " is examined as a text where Khodasevich reflects upon his trauma of emigration. In this perspective it is clear that Petrovskaya's biography – in keeping with Symbolism – was perceived by Khodasevich as an alternative version of his own life. Particular attention is paid to the composition of the memoir essay and to its textological history.

воительницы-валькирии, в системе персонажей и сюжете драматической поэмы Н. Гумилева «Гондла». Автор статьи пытается проанализировать характеристики героини и, сопоставив с источниками, на которые опирался Гумилев (прежде все-
го, это сказка Х.К. Андерсена «Дочь болотного царя», роман Р. Хаггарда «Эрик Светлоокий», пьеса Г. Ибсена «Богатырский курган»), выявить глубинные и не всегда отчетливо выраженные черты этого персонажа. Особое внимание обраща-
ется на «двуприродность» героини, отраженную в том числе в двойном имени (Лера/Лаик). Реконструируется постоянный для творчества Гумилева сюжет с участием героини-воительницы (см. также стихотворения «Поединок», «Ольга» и др.): она неизменно оказывается вестницей смерти для героя, который при этом
связан с ней отношениями любви или влечения, а отнюдь не вражды; во всех случаях воительница как бы способствует проявлению «я» героя, которое оказывается для него смертельным и в то же время им ожидаемым и благословляемым. Подключаются также интермедиальные (книга «Принцесса Лера» в оформлении Н. Калмакова) и биографические источники (жизнетворческая дуэль А. Белого/ Бальдра и В. Брюсова/Локи 1904–1905 гг.).
This paper seeks to situate the heroine resembling a mythological
Valkyrie, war-goddess and warrior, in the system of characters and plot of N. Gumilyov’s dramatic poem “Gondla”. Its author attempts to analyze the characteristics of the heroine and, by comparing Gumilyov’s play with its sources (first of all, the tale by H.C. Andersen “The Marsh King’s Daughter”, the novel by H. Rider Haggard “Eric Brighteyes” and the play by H. Ibsen “The Burial Mound”), to reveal underlying and not always clearly expressed peculiarities of this character. Special attention is paid to the ambivalence, two natures of the heroine which are also reflected by her two names, Lera and Laik. The recurrent plot pattern in Gumilyov’s work (see also poems “Single Combat” and “Olga”) that features a female warrior is reconstructed: she always turns out to be the harbinger of death of the hero, whose relationship with her can be described
as love or longing but not as enmity; in all cases the woman warrior contributes to the manifestation of the hero’s “I”, that is both fatal and anticipated, even lauded. Intermedial sources (the book “Princess Lera” with decorative design by N. Kalmakov) and biographical sources (the “mental duel” of Andrei Bely as Baldr and Valery Bryusov as Loki in 1904–1905) also get engaged.

В данной статье поднимается вопрос о сложности анализа урбанистических стихотворений В.Брюсова для турецких студентов, изучающих русский язык и русскую литературу на родине. Исходя из опыта работы с турецкими студентами, большое внимание уделяется причинам  следствиям тех трудностей, с которыми можно столкнуться в процессе анализа стихотворений Брюсова на городскую тематику, а также освещаются способы преодоления данных трудностей.

В  статье рассматривается переписка В. Брюсова с  главным редактором «Аполлона» С. Маковским, секретарем Е. Зноско-Боровским и постоянным участником, а  затем и  куратором литературного отдела Н. Гумилевым. Восстанавливается история взаимодействия редакции и одного из главных мэтров русского символизма.

В статье анализируется кубофутуристический манифест Б.К. Лившица "Освобождение слова" (1913), который можно назвать одной из немногих попыток теоретического осмысления футуристической поэтики. Логика статьи Лившица при этом находится в прямой зависимости от идей В.Я. Брюсова и символизма в целом, и разбор "Освобождения слова" позволяет прочертить еще одну линию преемственности футуризма по отношению к символизму. В статье также рассматривается, как манифест Лившица мог отразиться в "Утре акмеизма" Мандельштама.

It took Prokofiev seven years to compose The Fiery Angel, an opera based on a novel by Brioussov. Between January 1920 and June 1927, the composer’s mind was completely focused on this new work. Despite many failed attempts, Prokofiev only heard extracts from the second act in a concert version given on 14 June 1928 (the opera was staged in Paris in November 1954, one year after Prokofiev’s death). As soon as April 1928, Prokofiev decided to draw a symphonic suite basically conceived as a paraphrase, but which quickly turned into a four-movement symphony; this is how the Third Symphony was born. Another project linked to The Fiery Angel failed. In 1923, without any prospect to stage the first version of the opera, Prokofiev decided to draw a vocal suite and thus to change the morphology of the opera in order to make it more appropriate for the concert.
Absent from the official catalogue of the composer’s works, this unfinished suite has never been the subject of any research until now, and it is at best briefly mentioned in the musicological writings devoted to Prokofiev. Exiled in the United Sates, why did he show any interest in Brioussov’s novel? How did he conceive his suite? What cuts did he have to make in the libretto? What problems did he face? These questions deserve to be answered.

Геноцид армянского народа, ставший одним из наиболее драматических событий в ходе Первой мировой войны, оказал весьма заметное влияние на развитие русской литературы начала XX в., что проявилось в творчестве одного из крупнейших ее представителей — В.Я. Брюсова. Писателя интересовали главным образом сюжеты, связанные с древней историей Армении, что нашло отражение как в его поэтических произведениях, так и в обобщающем научном труде, посвященном армянской истории ("Летопись исторических судеб армянского народа").

This book is devoted to the poorly studied early poetry of Vladislav Khodasevich (1886–1939), one of the most remarkable poets of the Russian “Silver Age”.
The research focuses primarily on early collections of Khodasevich, Molodost’ (Youth, 1908), Schastlivyj domik (The Happy Little House, 1914), and selection of poems from another book, Vetv’ (Branch, 1917). The mentioned texts are regarded as consequent stages of the poet’s development.
We took into consideration several aspects of the development of Khodasevich’s poetry. The first question of our interest was which texts of the poets of older generation (V. Bryusov, A. Blok, A. Bely) were adopted and revised by Khodasevich in his early verses.
Second, the present thesis analyses Russian poetry of the 19th century in Khodasevich’s treatment. In Molodost’ the references to Pushkin’s epoch were rather conventional and emanated from the influence of Bryusov, who had the reputation of the follower of Pushkin’s tradition. However, over time the presence of Pushkin’s epoch in Khodasevich’s writings was becoming more significant. In the verses written between 1916 and 1917 a new kind of reference to the 19th century literature becomes visible. The poet’s development consisted in gradual disengaging from the influence of Bryusov and other symbolist poets, and in overcoming them through employing the traditions of the 19th century.
The third important theme of the study is Khodasevich’s own evolution. In our opinion, the poet, being under the influence of the “younger” symbolists, had adopted their model of evolution as well. For example, the first stage of Khodasevich’s development, i.e. his “thesis”, corresponds to the “antithesis” of Block and Bely. The following stage of his evolution is in contrast to the first one, similarly to how it happened among the “younger” symbolists.
Having undertaken the analysis of the poems written between 1915 and 1917, when aesthetic themes were replaced with social and ethical problems, helped us reach the conclusion that the third stage of Khodasevich’s evolution (the “synthesis”) corresponds to the “synthesis” of Blok.
