Pushkin

Originally published as “Linguistic Comedy in Eugene Onegin.” In: Ulbandus: The Slavic Review of Columbia University, 12 (2009/2010): 21-40. This paper examines the role of foreign texts and borrowings  in the text of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, as well as the "ostensible translations" in the text of letters and conversations between characters supposedly taking place in French.

Alexander Pushkin's Poltava concludes with a paean to the subtle traces of human lives a century after their ends. All that "goes on four feet, two feet and three feet ... and is most feeble when it walks on four" passes to dust, thereafter existing in this world only as a shade of past events, perhaps exerting a presence in history or legend and then, possibly, in myth. (1) The barely discernible remains of the Swedish king's camp at Bender, three steps descending into the belly of the earth, say little about his worthiness as Peter's foe. The field at Poltava and its trees silently memorialize the warriors who fought and died in the battle. A monument built by the labor of hands commemorates the two "martyrs," Colonel Iskra and the Judge General Kochubei, concealing the deleterious longing for vengeance against Mazepa that motivated their loyalty to Russia. As for the Hetman himself, the final stanza of Poltava claims that [TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ...

Love’s victors succeed by conquering the beloved’s heart. A conquest is the subjugation of an enemy by combat, or overcoming an obstacle to gain possession of something by force whether physically or morally. Although a conquest is defined as victory rather than defeat, the lovers Werther and Onegin can be called conquerors themselves: taking up their arms into battle, bearing in mind the promise of attaining who they desire, but in the end failing in their mission. It is, nonetheless, a conquest in its own right albeit a failure. It is a fight to the finish, even unto death. Also worthy to take note is another name for Pestilence, a horseman of the apocalypse often depicted riding a white horse: its personification can be called Conquest, the bringer of violent disease.

The article presents a profound analysis of A. S. Pushkin’s translation From A. Chénier («The cover, soaked by caustic blood…»), which constitutes a case study demonstrating how the dramatic aesthetic of the sublime and theoretical refl ections on the scenic pathos in the second half of the 18th — the beginning of the 19th centuries provides a fruitful context for a poetic experiment that is supposed to transform Pushkin’s creative strategies.

Resumen: El Cantar de Oleg el Previsor es uno de los poemas más conocidos de Aleksandr S. Pushkin (1799-1837), el poeta nacional ruso por excelencia que se enmarca dentro del romanticismo ruso. En 1822 escribe el Cantar como parte de una serie de baladas de tema histórico dedicadas a los gobernantes del primer estado eslavo oriental, la Rus᾿ de Kiev (ss. IX-X): los príncipes pertenecientes a la dinastía de los riuríkidas, de origen escandinavo. En el Cantar desarrolla el motivo de la muerte de Oleg, leyenda que ya recoge la Crónica Primaria (s. XII), y que tendría su origen en el folclore de transmisión oral, ya sea de procedencia escandinava u oriental. Palabras clave: Romanticismo ruso, Aleksandr Pushkin, Rus᾿ de Kiev, Príncipe Oleg de Kiev, Saga de Örvar Oddr. Abstract: The Song of Oleg the Prescient is one of the most famous poems of Aleksandr S. Pushkin (1799-1837), the quintessential Russian national poet who is classified as belonging to the Russian Romanticism. In 1822 he wrote the Song as part of a series of ballads of historical subject devoted to the rulers of first East Slavic state, the Kievan Rus᾿ (9 th-10 th c.): the princes belonging to the riurikid dinasty, of Scandinavian origin. In the Song he develops the motive of prince Oleg᾿s death, a legend that was gathered already by the Primary Chronicle (12 th c.), and that would have its origin in the oral folklore, either of Scandinavian or oriental origin.

Boris Godounov de Pouchkine met en scène l’idée de performativité (qui désigne le fait que la parole puisse constituer un acte) à travers non pas une, mais deux figures susceptibles de s’exprimer en souverain : l’une d’elle, celle de Boris Godounov, échoue sur la question de la performativité, puisque le seul acte de langage qu’elle accomplit véritablement dans la pièce est de l’ordre de l’aveu involontaire – et ce défaut apparaît immédiatement, contrairement à Richard III dont l’efficacité performative s’inverse lorsqu’il sort de la sphère immanente pour entrer dans celle de la justice rétributive d’ordre divin. L’autre figure pouchkinienne, celle de Grigori Otrépiev, rejoue l’acte de langage canonique décrit par Austin, celui du baptême, et même le fait qu’il s’agisse d’un auto-baptême et une usurpation n’empêche pas cette parole d’être caractérisée par sa grande efficacité. Ainsi, les deux trajectoires, descendante et ascendante, que suivent Boris et Gricha dans l’intrigue, sont aussi fonction de la performativité que leur parole est capable d’incarner. À travers une comparaison entre la nature et les manifestations de cette parole performative chez les deux figures du pouvoir dans la pièce de Pouchkine, cet article propose donc de montrer la manière dont le théâtre peut exposer les mécanismes du pouvoir sans pour autant devenir un instrument au service de celui-ci.

В статье демонстрируется, что при сочинении романа «Сандро из Чегема» Фазиль Искандер не столько писал чегемский мир с натуры, сколько работал в разнообразных литературных канонах, в том числе созданных малыми народами. Показаны многочисленные параллели с произведениями русских и зарубежных писателей.

The cultural myth of Cleopatra was central to the aesthetic sensibility of the Russian Silver Age. Few attempts, however, have been made to unfold the intricate workings of the image of Cleopatra as a fatal lover—an image that proved extremely influential among Silver Age writers and was di­rectly inspired by Alexander Pushkin’s series of prose and verse fragments devoted to the Egyptian queen. Because Cleopatra-like heroines some­times appear under different names and in different costumes, a rigorous framework for identifying and contrasting these images is in order. This essay outlines the structure, genealogy, and time frame of such a project.

An Extract from a Novel acclaimed by many as the greatest work of Russian Literature ever written, it also claims a position as one of the Supreme Masterpieces of World Fiction - translated into every language, in print for over 175 years. Originally released under the current title: 'Tchitchikoff's Journeys' due to Russian censoring difficulties. Originally entitled 'Dead Souls' by its author, Nikolai Gogol was obliged to rename it 'Tchitchikoff's Journeys' by the Petersburg Censors, after having been turned down by the Moscow Censors on the grounds that it showed "Gogol was taking up arms against Immortality". For the first 1842 edition its original title was only used as a sub-title, and the word "Poem", (in the sense of an epic narrative) served to describe its literary form.

В настоящей статье предлагается расшифровка одного из самых темных стихотворений Осипа Мандельштама. Отправной точкой послужила следующая гипотеза: во «Внутри горы бездействует кумир» Мандельштам имеет дело с сакральностью власти автократа — феноменом, свойственным как Древнему Египту и Вавилону, так и русской истории, включая советский период. Образный строй стихотворения, его стилистика, словоупотребление, лирический сюжет и, наконец, причудливая, «матрешечная» интертекстуальная структура направлены на подрыв кумиропоклонничества по отношению к властителю. Недаром этот обобщенный персонаж показан отвратительным, старым, пережившим свой век и вошедшим в стадию распада. Самые сильные подтексты стихотворения — Критский старец («Божественная комедия»), золотой кумир Навуходоносора (Книга пророка Даниила), медный всадник (поэма Пушкина), не говоря уже о пещерном храме Рамсеса Великого в Абу-Симбеле, — высвечивают истинную природу кумира: это правитель, получающий божественные почести. Буддийские ассоциации, которые до сих пор были главным объектом обсуждения, когда речь заходила о «Внутри горы..»", там, безусловно, наличествуют, но важны они не сами по себе, а как подчиненные вышеуказанной теме: правителя-бога.


The article «Inside the Mountain Idles... the Subtext? Figuring out Mandel'shtam's Idol» is an attempt to decipher one of Osip Mandel'shtam's most enigmatic poems. As a point of departure, it hypothetically states that the poem "Inside the Mountain Idles an Idol" deals with the sacredness of an autocrat inherent in Ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, as well as Russian/Soviet history. The poem's imagery, its diction, wording, plot and, last but not least, whimsical intertextual matryoshka-like nesting pattern are all means of undermining this kind of idolatry. The generalized idol is portrayed as a ghastly old creature who has outlived his age and is decaying. To name a few of the most powerful subtexts, the Old Man of Crete from The Divine Comedy, King Nebuchadnezzar's gold idol from The Book of Daniel, Alexander Pushkin's Bronze Horseman, not to mention Ramses the Great's rock "Abu Simbel" temple, highlight the idol's nature, which is that of a ruler worshipped as god. Buddhist associations, so far the main point in the critical discussion of "Inside the Mountain Idles an Idol", relevant as they are, should be seen as helping embody the ruler-god theme.

Dargomyzhsky and “The Golden Cockerel” by N. Rimsky-Korsakov. The author undertook a comprehensive study of Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera in terms of history of its creation, the libretto based on A. Pushkin's “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” and other literary and musical sources, genre, style, musical dramaturgy, and form. 2nd revised edition (first published in St. Petersburg, 1998)

Издание  непристойной пародийной баллады Пушкина, написанной в Лицее и дошедшей в неисправных и анонимных списках, снабжено текстологическим, лингвистическим, стиховедческим, историко-литературным и биографическим комментарием. Особый раздел составляют исследования, посвященные истории, языку и поэтике русского обсценного бурлеска от Баркова до Пушкина; изучается связь этой традиции с устным народным творчеством и с фривольной французской литературой XVII—XVIII вв.

The paper attempts to prove that in “Cleopatra” Akhmatova portrays herself: as a beauty, as the last poet of the perished Silver Age and as an exceptionally valuable figure which Stalinist Russia risks loosing. To this end, she deploys a cryptographic manner of writing permeating the poem. The paper also suggests that the publication of the poem paved the way towards Akhmatova’s cult as “Anna of all the Russias.”

This book is devoted to the poorly studied early poetry of Vladislav Khodasevich (1886–1939), one of the most remarkable poets of the Russian “Silver Age”.
The research focuses primarily on early collections of Khodasevich, Molodost’ (Youth, 1908), Schastlivyj domik (The Happy Little House, 1914), and selection of poems from another book, Vetv’ (Branch, 1917). The mentioned texts are regarded as consequent stages of the poet’s development.
We took into consideration several aspects of the development of Khodasevich’s poetry. The first question of our interest was which texts of the poets of older generation (V. Bryusov, A. Blok, A. Bely) were adopted and revised by Khodasevich in his early verses.
Second, the present thesis analyses Russian poetry of the 19th century in Khodasevich’s treatment. In Molodost’ the references to Pushkin’s epoch were rather conventional and emanated from the influence of Bryusov, who had the reputation of the follower of Pushkin’s tradition. However, over time the presence of Pushkin’s epoch in Khodasevich’s writings was becoming more significant. In the verses written between 1916 and 1917 a new kind of reference to the 19th century literature becomes visible. The poet’s development consisted in gradual disengaging from the influence of Bryusov and other symbolist poets, and in overcoming them through employing the traditions of the 19th century.
The third important theme of the study is Khodasevich’s own evolution. In our opinion, the poet, being under the influence of the “younger” symbolists, had adopted their model of evolution as well. For example, the first stage of Khodasevich’s development, i.e. his “thesis”, corresponds to the “antithesis” of Block and Bely. The following stage of his evolution is in contrast to the first one, similarly to how it happened among the “younger” symbolists.
Having undertaken the analysis of the poems written between 1915 and 1917, when aesthetic themes were replaced with social and ethical problems, helped us reach the conclusion that the third stage of Khodasevich’s evolution (the “synthesis”) corresponds to the “synthesis” of Blok.

слов русского языка, встречающихся в художественных и публицистических произведениях А. С. Пушкина, а так-
же в его письмах и деловых бумагах. Для каждого слова разработана словарная статья, в которой показано число
случаев его употребления в текстах Пушкина, сформулированы его значения, проиллюстрированные цитатами и
снабженные полным перечнем словоупотреблений, содержащим указание на грамматические формы и ссылки на
вое тексты, в которых встречается данное слово; отдельно показано функционирование слова в составе фразеоло-
гических сочетаний. Каждый том содержит также приложения, в которых представлен справочный аппарат книги.
Специально для 2-го издания был составлен «Алфавитный указатель стихотворений».

Книга представляет собой лексикографический памятник и будет интересна филологам, а также всем, кто ин-
тересуется русским языком и его историей.

Neither Arkadii nor Boris Strugatskii had originally intended to make a living in writing. Arkadii dreamed of becoming an astronomer, but his wartime experience and training led him to work as a translator and editor of Japanese literature. Boris intended to become a physicist, trained as an astronomer, and ended up as a computer specialist at Pulkovo Observatory. This common thread of astronomy turns out to be fantastically important for understanding their works, as their most important ones are experiments in cosmology, and their shared expertise is instrumental in their construction of literary hellscapes. This book explores how the Strugatskiis’ cosmological explorations are among the most fundamental elements of their art. It examines also how these explorations connect to their predecessors in the Russian literary tradition—particularly to the poetry of Pushkin.
