Female Warriors

This article concerns the symbol of the Kyngervi journal—the lady with a drinking horn. This motif, and other motifs like it, are well known from a selection of small Viking Age figurines that predominantly are interpreted as representing valkyrjur—the shieldmaidens of the god Óðinn. This interpretation is a simplification of the figurines’ otherwise polysemous qualities and needs to be challenged. Based on the ‘Hårby figurine’ as a case study, this article identifies how the valkyrjur-interpretation came to be and why it is questionable, as well as suggests different interpretations based on gender and queer theory. The results
indicate that the valkyrjur-interpretation originates from modern gender
stereotypes and questionable comparative studies between different figurines and between the figurines and medieval sagas. The conclusion being that by investigating Viking Age figurines with other methods than strictly comparative, new knowledge can be gained. The medieval written sagas should, therefore, only be used as a reference material and not as the singular basis for interpretations.

Although duelling was considered a male monopoly, from time to time there have been women who defended their honour in single combat. However, the stories about them are often unreliable if not demonstrably fabricated. Some of these myths were intended to ridicule duelling by women or women’s emancipation in general, but there are also anecdotes in which a female duellist in male attire plays the part of a heroine by defeating a man. Particularly interesting is the myth of the topless duelling women that arose in the 1880s and was revived recently on the Internet. This widespread myth was inspired by Emile Bayard’s An affair of honour (1884), a painting showing two fencing ladies with naked torsos.

Статья продолжает анализ поэмы-сказки «Царь-Девица» в аспекте характерологии М. Цветаевой. Детально обсуждаются андрогинность героев, мена гендерными ролями. Описываются языческие и христианские, а также демонические и ангельские элементы в образе заглавной героини. Проводится сравнение с фольклорными источниками. Это сказки на сюжеты 400*В «Царь-девица» (вариант типа «Муж ищет исчезнувшую или похищенную жену») и 551 «Молодильные яблоки» (по указателю Н.П. Андреева). Делается вывод о том, что если сюжетная основа и была почерпнута Цветаевой из сказок типа 400*В, а некоторые особенности характерологии сближают героиню поэмы с женским персонажем сказок типа 551, то в основном характер героини восходит к былинам, где испытывается обычное соотношение силы и слабости, мужского и женского, причем женский персонаж оказывается заведомо и неоспоримо сильнее мужского. Поэма подробно сопоставляется с былинами «Женитьба Добрыни» и «Настасья Никулична». В итоге утверждается, что благодаря разветвленной системе мотивов и ассоциаций заглавная героиня объединяет две трактовки Царь-Девицы, представленные в лирике Цветаевой: это и дева-стихия, удалая богатырка, напоминающая о героине былин, и сакральное существо, преодолевшее все земное, святой воин. Поэма являет собой апогей первой из двух названных тенденций в творчестве Цветаевой, что, по-видимому, объясняется фольклорными источниками поэмы-сказки.
This paper continues the analysis of the fairy-tale poem “The Tsar-Maidenˮ in the aspect of Tsvetaeva’s characterology. The androgyny of the main characters and switching of gender roles are thoroughly discussed. Pagan and Christian, as well as demonic and angelic elements of the main character, are described. Comparison with folkloric sources is made, primarily with tales types 400*В “The Tsar-Maidenˮ (a variant of the type “The Quest for a Lost Bride”) and 551 “The Rejuvenating Apples” (according to Andreev index, or SUS). It is demonstrated that though the plot of Tsvetaeva’s fairy-tale poem heavily relies upon the tale type 400*В and some character peculiarities are common for Tsvetaeva’s heroine and heroines of the tale type 551, mainly Tsvetaeva’s Tsar-Maiden resembles the woman warriors of byliny where the usual balance of strength and weakness, masculine and feminine is tested and the female character is shown as more powerful than the male one. The poem is compared in detail with byliny “Dobrynia’s Marriage” and “Nastasja Nikulichna”. Due to the sophisticated system of motifs and associations, the heroine comprises two variants of female warrior existing in Tsvetaeva’s lyrics, i.e. daughter of the elements, dashing polianitsa resembling byliny’s character and a saint warrior renouncing all earthly values. The poem represents the apogee of the first of these tendencies in Tsvetaeva’s work, which is largely attributable to its folkloric sources.

Game of Thrones series that has become one of the most widely discussed TV shows of our time, is analyzed from the perspective of art history and cultural studies. Its popularity is connected with the fact that it represents not just fantasy, but an archetypal situation, "deciding the fates"-in the style of a "baroque", picturesque, dynamic screen show. This is an artistic statement on a number of highly relevant topics. The series is devoted to problems of management strategies, interstate policy, updated gender relations. The last season shows the emergence of an era of quick intelligence and unemotional, non-repressive governance. The image of Bran Stark-the new king, unable to walk but able to move in the space of the past and the future-embodies the features of an out-of-body, supra-personal mind, super-intelligence akin to an electronic one. Game of Thrones is analyzed as a phenomenon of synthetic art in which cinematic, theatrical and dramatic aesthetic elements coexist. In different episodes of the eighth, final season these aesthetic elements are combined in various proportions. The third episode is the most cinematic one-the culmination of the battle between humans and White Walkers. The last episode, on the contrary, contains almost “on-stage” scenes and dialogues.
Until the last season, the adventurous cinematic narration dominated,
continuing the tradition of the adventure novel. And the last season
includes more vivid features of a dramatic plot internally correlated with
Shakespeare’s chronicles and tragedies and Penthesilea, a romantic tragedy by Kleist. However, in spite of the similarities with Shakespeare’s “state-ofthe-world tragedies”, there are no characters in Game of Thrones who are completely similar to Renaissance playwright’s personae in their structure.
One of the reasons is the rejection of a multi-faceted, “synthetic” character in the popular visual art of the Modern era, when the personality’s complexity and unique originality are replaced with the system of distinct “stage types” with a simpler inner world. The series contains a veiled appeal to adapt to the imperfection of the world, but also expresses serious concern about the continuously high value of brute force and power in the human society.

Его популярность связана с тем, что он представляет не просто фэнтези, а архетипическую ситуацию «решения судеб» — в стилистике по-барочному живописного, полного динамики зрелища. Данный сериал являет художественное высказывание на ряд высоко актуальных тем. Сериал посвящен проблемам
управленческих стратегий, межгосударственной политике, обновлению межгендерных отношений. В последнем сезоне показано наступление эпохи быстрого интеллекта, неэмоционального и нерепрессивного управления. В образе Брана Старка — нового короля, не способного ходить, но умеющего передвигаться в пространстве прошлого и будущего, — просматриваются черты внетелесного, надличностного разума,
сверхинтеллекта, родственного электронному.
«Игра престолов» анализируется как явление синтетического искусства, в котором кинематографическое и театрально-драматическое начала сосуществуют. В разных сериях восьмого, заключительного сезона эти начала находятся в различных пропорциях. Наиболее кинематографична третья серия — кульминация битвы людей с белыми ходоками. Последняя серия, напротив, содержит почти сценические мизансцены и
диалоги. До последнего сезона в сериале доминировало авантюрное киноповествование, продолжающее традиции авантюрного романа.
В последнем сезоне ярче проявляются черты драматургического сюжета, внутренне соотносимого с хрониками и трагедиями Шекспира, с трагедией «Пентесилея» Клейста. Однако, при всем сходстве с шекспировскими трагедиями «состояния мира», в «Игре престолов» отсутствуют герои, полностью аналогичные в своей структуре героям ренессансного драматурга. Это связано с отказом от многогранного, «синтетического» героя в игровом искусстве Нового времени, когда на смену сложности и
неповторимому своеобразию личности приходит деление персонажей на амплуа. Сериал содержит завуалированный призыв адаптироваться к несовершенству мира, но также выражает серьезное беспокойство по поводу сохранения высокой ценности силы и власти в человеческом
обществе.

В статье определяется место героини, спроецированной на образ
воительницы-валькирии, в системе персонажей и сюжете драматической поэмы Н. Гумилева «Гондла». Автор статьи пытается проанализировать характеристики героини и, сопоставив с источниками, на которые опирался Гумилев (прежде все-
го, это сказка Х.К. Андерсена «Дочь болотного царя», роман Р. Хаггарда «Эрик Светлоокий», пьеса Г. Ибсена «Богатырский курган»), выявить глубинные и не всегда отчетливо выраженные черты этого персонажа. Особое внимание обраща-
ется на «двуприродность» героини, отраженную в том числе в двойном имени (Лера/Лаик). Реконструируется постоянный для творчества Гумилева сюжет с участием героини-воительницы (см. также стихотворения «Поединок», «Ольга» и др.): она неизменно оказывается вестницей смерти для героя, который при этом
связан с ней отношениями любви или влечения, а отнюдь не вражды; во всех случаях воительница как бы способствует проявлению «я» героя, которое оказывается для него смертельным и в то же время им ожидаемым и благословляемым. Подключаются также интермедиальные (книга «Принцесса Лера» в оформлении Н. Калмакова) и биографические источники (жизнетворческая дуэль А. Белого/ Бальдра и В. Брюсова/Локи 1904–1905 гг.).
This paper seeks to situate the heroine resembling a mythological
Valkyrie, war-goddess and warrior, in the system of characters and plot of N. Gumilyov’s dramatic poem “Gondla”. Its author attempts to analyze the characteristics of the heroine and, by comparing Gumilyov’s play with its sources (first of all, the tale by H.C. Andersen “The Marsh King’s Daughter”, the novel by H. Rider Haggard “Eric Brighteyes” and the play by H. Ibsen “The Burial Mound”), to reveal underlying and not always clearly expressed peculiarities of this character. Special attention is paid to the ambivalence, two natures of the heroine which are also reflected by her two names, Lera and Laik. The recurrent plot pattern in Gumilyov’s work (see also poems “Single Combat” and “Olga”) that features a female warrior is reconstructed: she always turns out to be the harbinger of death of the hero, whose relationship with her can be described
as love or longing but not as enmity; in all cases the woman warrior contributes to the manifestation of the hero’s “I”, that is both fatal and anticipated, even lauded. Intermedial sources (the book “Princess Lera” with decorative design by N. Kalmakov) and biographical sources (the “mental duel” of Andrei Bely as Baldr and Valery Bryusov as Loki in 1904–1905) also get engaged.

The respective article seeks to describe the warlike exploits of the Queen of
the Iceni - Boudicca, all her Celtic legacy and in return propose a reflection on the
creation and reinvention of Boudicca in the Tacitus and Cassius Dio’s speech registered
on the primary sources. In Celtic society, there are records about these warrior women
named Dux Femina being leaders both in the war and in the government of their people,
in this case, the source of inspiration for this Celtic legacy is Boudicca.

Во второй статье двухчастного цикла рассматривается образ девы-воительницы в лирике Блока 1905–1916 гг. Показано, что если ранее вагнеровские мотивы были вынесены на маргиналии, то с 1905 г. они встраиваются в основной сюжет. И если для более ранней лирики главными из них были пламя вокруг спящей Брунгильды и ее пробуждение героем, то во втором томе их место занимает мотив измены и смерти Зигфрида – наряду с анамнесисом, т. е. припоминанием (утерянного героического прошлого), а в третьем – мотив забвения, рокового неузнания
«первой любви». Описывается соотношение с валькирией образов девызмеи (во втором томе лирики) и лебединой девы (во втором и третьем). Выявляется соположение образа воительницы не только с Девой Марией и ангелом, но и с Родиной (Русью) в третьем томе. Указывается, что в типологическом отношении блоковская креативная рецепция образа воительницы включает две сюжетные возможности, казалось бы, противоположные: с одной стороны, происходит испытание силы лирическим героем и воительницей, причем оно сопровождается гибелью персонажей, а
с другой, происходит их отказ от испытания силы, и поединок замещается любовным преследованием, эротическим поиском. Благодаря тому, что у Блока главной сюжетной коллизией является гностическая коллизия спасения, пробуждения одного персонажа другим, причем статус «спасающего» и «спасаемого» оказывается меняющимся, нестабильным (как и факт
осуществления / неосуществления интенции спасения), эти сюжетные возможности чередуются, мерцают, взаимоотражаются.

The second article of the two-part cycle considers the image of the female warrior in Blok’s lyrics of 1905–1916. While in the earlier lyrics Wagnerian motifs were marginal, since 1905 they are woven into the main plot. Previously, key motifs related to the Ring tetralogy in Blok’s poetic works were fire surrounding the sleeping heroine and her awakening but in the second volume of Blok’s poetry they are overshadowed by the motif of Siegfried’s betrayal and death – together with the motif of anamnesis, i.e. recalling (of the lost heroic past), and in the third volume – by the motif of oblivion, of fatal non-recognition of the “first love”. The relation between Valkyria and the images of snake maiden (in the second volume) and swan maiden (in the second and third volumes of Blok’s lyrics) is described. Characteristic for the third volume juxtaposition of the female warrior not only with Virgin Mary and angel but also with Russia (Rus’) as homeland is revealed. The author shows that Blok’s creative reception of the image of female warrior typologically includes two plot possibilities which usually appear as contradicting. On the one hand, the contest of strength between the lyrical hero perceived as a warrior and the female warrior happens (and finishes with the death of one or both characters), and on the other hand, this contest is replaced by love pursuit, erotic quest. Due to the fact that Blok’s main plot is Gnostic plot of salvation, of the awakening of one character by another one while the status of the saving / being saved is changing, non-stable (same as the fact of implementation or non-implementation of salvation), those plot possibilities alternate, flicker, reflect one another.

В статье прослеживаются константы образа девы-воительницы в творческом мире М. Цветаевой и намечаются линии эволюции в его креативной рецепции. Показывается, что образ воительницы присутствует в сознании Цветаевой по крайней мере с 1909 по 1937 г., т.е. почти на всем протяжении ее творческого пути. Она неизменно осознает себя амазонкой, «единоличным бойцом», хотя само содержание этого образа постепенно меняется. В ранней лирике это своего рода разбойница, «беззаконница», стихийная героиня, свободно проявляющая себя в мире и ему равная. С 1917 г. воительница обращается в Жанну д’Арк, провидицу и спасительницу, наделенную божественной миссией, которая понимается как отказ от всего мирского ради (поэтического) призвания, мистического соединения с Гением. Неизменно сохраняется представление о силе лирической героини, которая реализуется в разных обличьях. Так, в 1923 г. на первый план выступают «разрозненные пары» Ахилл/Пентесилея и Зигфрид/Брунгильда, с которыми связаны мотивы трагического разминовения равных (причем равенство понимается и как глубинное родство, «братственность»), их «ратоборства», любви-вражды. Наконец, к 1927 г. амазонка принимает и образ мужененавистницы, но при этом нежной матери, жертвующей собой ради сына.

Статья посвящена сопоставлению двух «систем гендерных координат» эпохи модернизма - А. Блока и М. Цветаевой. В результате анализа как художественных текстов, так и прямых, публицистических высказываний делаются выводы о разрушении гендерного эссенциализма в творческом сознании Блока и Цветаевой и об общей для них идее «нового» человека, который бы соединил в себе «женственное» и «мужественное» и тем самым стал существом высшего порядка.

This article examines the constructing of gender in the Russian Modernist literature based on the works and life-building practices of two authors: Alexander Blok and Marina Tsvetaeva. Both poets create new (though relying on the long mythological and philosophical tradition) concept of femininity, but, in the case of Tsvetaeva, this novelty is radical, and, in the case of Blok, it is more related to the tradition. Tertium comparationis for these two cases is the fact that the important integral part of both poets’ artistic worlds was the gender-nonconforming figure of the female warrior. For Tsvetaeva, this image represents her alter ego (the main lyrical mask). For Blok, such a mask was the male warrior, and the female warrior was another fundamental plot actor. Thus, Blok’s lyrical hero appears in the most traditional role of the patriarchal culture, that of the warrior. But much less traditional is the fact that the main plot of Blok’s works, i.e. the Sophian myth with Gnostic origins, develops in two variants: not only of the imprisoned, enchanted and sleeping World Soul waiting to be rescued by the hero, but also of the hero which is kept by the forces of evil and ultimately released by the Sophia-like heroine. The traditional concept of male superiority is, therefore, partly overthrown in Blok’s artistic practice, but, in his direct statements, the poet usually stresses the affinity between the “heroic” and the “masculine”. It is also taken into consideration that Blok did not equate “masculine” with “male”, “feminine” with “female” and believed that the birth of the “new man” would happen as a union of the “masculine” and “feminine” elements. Tsvetaeva constructs gender, in particular, feminine, in a much more radical way than Blok. Her lyrical heroine is gender-nonconforming, masculinized (while Blok’s lyrical
hero is rather conventional in gender sense) and not only infinitely superior to male characters who are, in turn, feminized and/or
infantilized, but often does not need them at all: as a saint prophet, God’s herald on Earth renouncing flesh in general or as an Amazon despising men but not women. Her favorite heroines are androgynous, possessing both masculine and feminine traits (same as Tsvetaeva herself did, in her own opinion and in the opinions of others). Thus, the texts of both poets reflect the idea of the creation of the new, androgynous human who would be the creature of a higher order transcending the earthly baseness: the idea which was in the air of the Silver Age.

Сопоставляются три редакции стихотворения Мережковского о рыцаре Танкреде и деве-воительнице Клоринде (1883) и текст-источник-поэма Т. Тассо «Освобожденный Иерусалим». С каждой редакцией Мережковский все дальше отходил от первоисточника, не только отказываясь от словесных формул Тассо, но и меняя последовательность событий, т. е. собственно смысл сюжета, о чем свидетельствует и учительный финал. Демонстрируется, как эти изменения связаны с формированием религиозно-философской концепции Мережковского.

This article aims at comparing three versions of D. Merezhkovsky’s poem about the knight Tancred and the woman warrior Clorinda (1883) and its source text – the poem by Torquato Tasso “Jerusalem Delivered”. It is demonstrated that with each subsequent version Merezhkovsky departed further away from the primary source – he not only forgoes Tasso’s verbal formulas but also changes the sequence of events, i.e. the story’s meaning, which is evidenced by the didactic ending that draws a finish line in the tale of Tancred and Clorinda not where Tasso drew it. The characters’ characterization also changes so as to better correspond to the pacifistic pathos of the ending. In the case of Clorinda, the traditional “masculine” elements of the woman warrior image, which are rather important both in “Jerusalem Delivered” and in mythology, get smoothed out. It is shown that the woman warrior in Tasso is a moritura character (i.e. destined to death) – the only two heroines of the poem who perish are female warriors Clorinda and Gildippe. This is very much in accordance with the epic tradition where the relationship between such a heroine and a stronger male warrior does not get a happy ending: she either loses her selfidentity and wondrous strength after being defeated and/or after surrendering to love or dies in combat. The elements of chivalric romance and legend in “Jerusalem Delivered” are analyzed, and it is concluded that they are overshadowed by the tradition of the epic poem whereas Merezhkovsky creates a legend proper. Already at this earliest stage of his artistic life, he was concerned with the problem of incompatibility of Christianity and earthly (“carnal”) love. Therefore,
the miracle that occurs in the poem (an indispensable element of the genre of legend) gets associated with the transformation and renewal of the individual by love and beauty, which makes
the characters renounce the contest of strength (i.e. single combat) and lay down their arms. The uniqueness of the artistic choice of Merezhkovsky whose inspiration was sparked by this first and not second, more famed, encounter of Tancred and Clorinda is emphasized by the fact that the episode of Clorinda’s death in combat (and her baptism) was repeatedly and almost exclusively represented in painting, music and poetry. But for Merezhkovsky the rehabilitation of flesh, beauty and earthly love was fundamentally important; it is also shown that in his work this rehabilitation is closely associated with the chronotope of Italian Renaissance (cf. his Italian Novellas and The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci). The conclusion is made that “A Legend from Torquato Tasso” has preempted many of Merezhkovsky’s later ideas, in particular, his religiousphilosophical conception of “sacred flesh” and of the Third Testament. Finally, the heroine of
the poem is compared to another woman warrior in Merezhkovsky’s work: if the beginning of
his artistic life is marked by the image of Clorinda, there is Joan of Arc at its end (from the book Joan of Arc of 1938 completing the trilogy Faces of Saints: from Jesus to Nowadays). Their similarities and, mainly, differences, due to the different phases in the author’s ideological evolution, which however is represented as an integral spiritual path, are discussed.

В первой статье двухчастного цикла, посвященного исследованию образов воительницы и андрогина в творчестве полузабытой поэтессы Серебряного века Любови Столицы, ставится вопрос о воительнице как гендерно неоднозначной фигуре, апроприирующей традиционнейшую маскулинную роль патриархатной культуры, т.е. роль воина. Демонстрируется, что в творчестве Столицы воительница появляется многократно и в разных обличьях (амазонки, богиня Афина, русские богатырки, Жанна д'Арк, воительницы времен воображаемого «матриархата», амазоноподобные дивы в «Песни о Золотой Олоне», «девица-доброволец» Первой мировой). Доказывается, что наряду с «женской» андрогинной фигурой у Столицы присутствует и «мужская», причем константной сюжетной ситуацией является любовь ангелоподобного женственного юноши и «мужепохожей» женщины. Анализируются такие особенности творческого мира Любови Столицы, как гендерные перевертыши и понимание женской роли как роли сильного. Устанавливается, что образ воительницы возникает в произведениях Столицы в связи с тремя основными темами. Во-первых, это «женский вопрос» и рефлексия писательницы о месте и возможностях женщины, по ее мнению, явно недооцененных. Во-вторых, это тема женского творчества и женской авторской субъектности, т.е. автометарефлексивный контекст. В-третьих, это утопически-эсхатологическая проблематика: вслед за А. Блоком и А. Белым-двумя важнейшими для Столицы представителями русского символизма, писательница репрезентирует воительницу как одно из воплощений Мировой Души, Софии, спасающей мир, чей образ восходит к гностическому мифу.
The first article of the two-part cycle, dedicated to exploring the images of the woman warrior and the androgyne in the works of a half-forgotten female poet of the Silver Age Liubov’ Stolitsa, raises the issue of the woman warrior as a gender nonconforming figure appropriating the most traditional masculine role of the patriarchal culture, i.e. that of the warrior. It is demonstrated that the woman warrior appears in Stolitsa’s work many times and in various forms (Amazons, goddess Athena, Russian warrior maidens of the steppe, or bogatyrka, Joan of Arc, women warriors of the imagined matriarchal society, Amazon-like daevas in The Song of Golden Olona, women volunteers of the World War One). The author argues that there is also “masculine” androgyne figure along with “female” androgynes in Stolitsa’s poetical work, and that the constant plot situation is love between the angel-like feminine youth and the “mannish” woman. Such features of Stolitsa’s work as gender roles reversal and representation of the feminine role as that of the “strong one” are analyzed. It is also established that the image of the female warrior appears in Stolitsa in relation to three main themes. First, this is “the woman question” and the poet’s reflections on the place and possibilities of women, which are, in her opinion, strongly underestimated. Second, this is the theme of women’s creative work and authorial agency, i.e. autometareflexive context. Third, this is utopian and eschatological thought: following A. Blok and A. Bely, the most important authors of Russian Symbolism for Liubov’ Stolitsa, she represents the woman warrior as one of the incarnations of the Soul of the World, Sophia saving the universe, whose image goes back to the Gnostic myth.

В статье рассматриваются образ воительницы и тема «бабьего бунта» в почти не изученной пьесе А.А. Барковой «Настасья Костёр» (1923) в связи с проблематикой гендерных исследований. Характерология, мотивно-сюжетный комплекс и предполагаемые источники пьесы анализируются и в контексте раннего творчества Барковой в целом, сосредоточенного на «женском вопросе»
и конструировании «новой» фемининности, и в аспекте архетипическом, ибо фигура воительницы принадлежит к «вечным образам» литературы и искусства. Устанавливается, что здесь впервые в творчестве Барковой образ воительницы
связывается с эсхатологическими идеями и утопическими чаяниями Серебряного века, с софийным мифом. Обсуждается проблема амбивалентности героини. Демонстрируются источники образа — от героини-змеи мистиков
русского символизма до Жанны д’Арк и атаманши Алены Арзамасской (персонажа «легенды о Разине»). Описываются радикальные гендерные «перевертыши» пьесы. На фоне константных топосов сюжета о воительнице, в изобилии присутствующих в пьесе, показывается и специфика его креативной рецепции А.А. Барковой.
The article examines the figure of the woman warrior and the theme of the “female rebellion” in the hitherto understudied play by Anna Barkova Nastasya Kostyor (1923) in the context of gender studies. Characters, motifs, and the play’s plot are placed against the background of
Barkova’s early work that heavily focused on the “woman question” and invented “new” femininity drawing from the archetypal image of the
female warrior in literature and art. The author argues that in this play, Barkova for the first time relates the figure of female warrior to eschatological ideas and utopianism of the Silver Age, namely to Sophia myth. The problem of the ambivalent nature of the female character is in the focus of discussion. The essay explores the sources of this character — from the mystical snake woman of Russian Symbolists to Joan of Arc and the “female ataman” Alena Arzamasskaya (the character of the so-called “Stepan Razin legend”). It describes radical gender inversions in Barkova’s play and explores its
original response to the topoi of female warrior that are abundant in this work.

Образ девы-воина в поэзии С. Парнок связывается с ее отношениями и творческим диалогом с М. И. Цветаевой, для которой воительница была своего рода alter ego. Прослеживается эволюция образа, отмечается, что с воительницей ассоциируется обычно не лирическая героиня С. Парнок, а ее адресат. Когда же она сама предстает воительницей, как в «Пенфесилее», то происходит это лишь отчасти (в другой своей ипостаси лирическая
героиня оказывается новой Сафо), причем она тяготится своей ролью – вплоть до того, что фактически слагает оружие в бою. В поздней лирике С. Парнок лирическая героиня неизменно противопоставляет себя воителям и воительницам, чей дух ей глубоко чужд и враждебен.

This paper associates the image of the female warrior in the poetry of Sophia Parnok with her relationship and artistic dialogue with Marina Tsvetaeva for whom the woman warrior was a kind of alter ego. The evolution of this image is traced, it is shown that it arises in Parnok’s poetry in 1914–1916, i. e. in the period of her close relationship with Tsvetaeva, and later appears as its echoes. If initially there are matches and consistencies between their views on the matter, as time goes by, the artistic dialogue takes a polemic form. For Parnok the turning point is «Penthesilea» triptych. This cycle of three poems is thoroughly analysed, so are all the appearances of the woman warrior in Parnok’s works. Curiously, Parnok’s lyrical subject almost never associates itself with this image: even in her early works, it is usually projected not on herself, but mostly on the addressee of her lyric (M. Tsvetaeva), or, at least, on the lyrical subject as a double of the addressee, its reflection. When Parnok’s lyrical subject itself appears as a warrior (as is the case
of the «Penthesilea» triptych), it happens only partly (in one of her hypostases Parnok’s heroine is the new Penthesilea, but in another one, she is the new Sappho) and against her will. Parnok’s female warrior is weighed down by her role and even relinquishes her weapons. As analysis demonstrates, the triptych is based on the principle of plot indeterminacy, indicating that there are two equally probable versions of the main event. On the one hand, the death of the heroine may be perceived as being killed in the fair fight (single combat), on the other hand, as a kind of suicide, non-resistance to the adversary. The duel occurs both at the level of the happenings where
the heroine is disguised as the new Penthesilea and at the discourse level, which can be labelled as
self-reflexive, where heroine appears as the new Sappho. At the level of the happenings, she fights Achilles. At the discourse, there is agon between Sappho and Alcaeus proved by the use of the derivative of Alcaic stanza and by numerous references to Vyacheslav Ivanov’s book «Alcaeus and Sappho» where these poets are shown as opposites in spirit by criteria of gentleness, aptitude for forgiveness vs belligerence, rage. Finally, at the third – metaphorical – level, the dispute of Parnok with Tsvetaeva occurs. In the later poetry of Sophia Parnok, the lyrical subject is invariably and unequivocally opposed to both male and female warriors, whose spirit is deeply alien and hostile for her.

Рассматривается образ воительницы в драматическом и публицистическом наследии Блока. Показано, что связанные с воительницей мотивы, заданные в его лирике (поединок, любовь-вражда, ассоциации с бурей, грозой, связь с образом «лебе-диной девы» и др.), в том числе отсылающие к истории Зигфрида и Брунгильды (прохождение героем через море огня вокруг героини и ее пробуждение им, невольное забвение героя, роковое неузнание), переходят в пьесы и прозу Блока, встраиваясь в его автобиографический миф, основанный на гностическом сюжете спасения.

This article deals with the image of the female warrior in Blok’s dramatic heritage, journalism, and ego-documents (in their relation to Blok’s lyrics). The female warrior is interpreted by Blok as a variant of Sophia-like character, is given only one “mythological” name – Brünnhilde, and is mainly projected onto Wagner’s interpretation of this figure in his tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. But Blok does not usually give such a character any specific name, and the undeniable references to Siegfried and Brünnhilde’s story (such as hero’s passing through the fire surrounding the sleeping heroine and her awakening, betrayal and death of the hero, involuntary oblivion and fatal non-recognition of the “first love”, “double” funeral pyre, etc.) are complemented by general mythic associations and archetypal motifs originating from various traditions and related to the female warrior, the “goddess of armies”, Valkyrie
(duel, love-hate and love-fight, headlong gallop or soaring on a horse, heroine’s independence of conduct, including in her choice of
her beloved, associations with storm, thunder, lightning, correlation with the image of the swan maiden). The poet never reproduces the whole plot (be it the traditional plot of the fight between the hero and the female warrior or the Wagnerian plot of the awakening by the hero of the sleeping heroine who formerly sacrificed herself for his salvation, of their short marriage, his departure into the wide world, his oblivion and recognition of the “love he had at first” at the death’s door) or even a succession of its episodes. Almost always the matter is limited to a recognizable motif or a complex of motifs which combine with genetically different ones and are interwoven into the plot of Blok’s autobiographical myth based on the Gnostic (Sophian) myth in its two variants – of the imprisoned, enchanted and sleeping World Soul waiting to be rescued by the hero, and of the hero who is captured by evil forces and released by the Sophia-like heroine. Both variants of the Gnostic myth may be discerned in the plot of Wagner’s tetralogy; the story of Siegfried and Brünnhilde as an incarnation of the old myth later connected to the Gnostic ideas was described by Th. Zieliński in his
book The Rivals of Christianity (Chapter “Beautiful Helen”) which Blok was familiar with since his student years. The motif and plot
complex Blok associated with the image of the female warrior is the most clearly presented and detailed in his play The Song of Fate
(1908). Due to the fact that the status of the characters that save or are saved in Blok’s works is changing, non-stable, two plot types
characteristic for the figure of the female warrior also alternate and reflect one another: the contest of strength between the hero and
the female warrior, on the one hand, and withdrawal from fight, the erotic quest, on the other. Faina and German in The Song of Fate
are undoubtedly entangled in a relationship of love-hate, and Faina even defeats the hero in a half-metaphorical duel, but at the same time German is intended to save her, while in her another hypostasis (that of Elena) it is the heroine who ultimately saves the hero.

The idea that women would choose to go to war is one that has perplexed men for centuries. Whilst the historical examples are extensive, the idea is still spoken as if it is an abstract and anomalous occurrence within different time periods.
Even within the modern ideal of gender equality, we still fall foul of discussing women in war as a strange and abnormal concept that counters ‘natural’ order: women are designed to nurture, ergo they must not want to fight. Yet the list of examples of this ‘natural order’ going unheeded is so vast that it does not even allow for a singular, overarching narrative to tie them all together. They are spread so far geographically, socially and technologically, that trying to link, for example, the nomadic women of ancient Sarmatia, to the crack force of medieval Islamic female archers seen in 11th c. Spain, is unthinkable outside of the realms of gender.
We could ask questions like why or how these groups were allowed to fight – but this does little more than reinforce our own preconceptions of gender roles, and point to these examples as anomalies of that norm. No, it is sometimes best to just let the stories and the people speak for themselves.

известной поэтессы и драматурга Серебряного века Марии Евгеньевны Лёвберг о Жанне д’Арк. Описывается история создания пьесы, и она встраивается в общую
канву творчества Лёвберг, которое в целом отмечено стремлением опрокинуть существовавший гендерный порядок и дать женщине возможность взять на себя мужскую роль. Причем в качестве архетипической мужской роли – вполне справедливо – понимается роль воина, которая в рамках неоромантической
творческой манеры Лёвберг становится ролью рыцаря. Анализируются главные образы пьесы в их соотношении друг с другом, реконструируется система мотивов. Показано, что она типична для сюжетов с участием девы-воительницы
(неузнание девы в обличье воина; поединок; равносильность и глубинное родство воительницы и избранного героя; мотивы грома, бури, грозы, молнии; мотив огня; параллели воительница / Дева Мария, воительница / ангел); одновременно демонстрируется своеобразие их разворачивания в данной пьесе. Исследуется сюжет, который также сопоставляется с историческими источниками; основной линией действия оказывается не столько борьба Жанны за освобождение Франции, сколько спасение души великого грешника, Жиля де Реца, под влиянием его любви к святой. Выдвигается гипотеза о том, почему эта пьеса, написанная
для проекта «исторических картин» при издательстве «Всемирная литература», оказалась не востребована.
The article considers not yet published drama by a little-known poet
and playwright of the Silver Age Maria Evgen’yevna Loevberg about Joan of Arc. The history of its creation is traced, and it gets embedded into the general frame of Loevberg’s artistic work which is characterized by the desire to establish a new gender order and to give the women “masculine” roles. As the archetypal masculine role
Loevberg rightly sees that of the warrior, which turns into the role of a knight because of the Neoromantical manner of the writer. The main characters of the play are analyzed in their connection to each other, the system of motifs is reconstructed. The author of the paper shows that these motifs are typical for the plots about the female warriors (the lack
of recognition of the maiden disguised and acting as a warrior; the duel; the equality and deep kinship of the female warrior and the chosen hero; the motifs of lightning, storm, thunder; the motif of flames; the parallels of the female warrior and Virgin Mary, of the female warrior and angel); at the same time, it is demonstrated the distinctiveness
of their use in this play. The plot also is analyzed, and its events are compared to the historical sources; its main arc turns out to be as much Joan’s fight for the liberation of France, as salvation of the soul of a great sinner, Gilles de Rais, under the influence of his love for the saint warrior. The author proposes the hypothesis concerning the
reasons why this drama created for the project of “historical scenes” under the aegis of the publishing house “Vsemirnaya Literatura”, was never staged

В первой статье двухчастного цикла рассматривается образ девы-воительницы в ранней лирике А. Блока (1898–1904). Показывается, что он представлен весьма широко, но не в чистом виде: воительница, как правило, интерпретируется Блоком как вариант «софийной» героини. Выявляются источники
этого образа у Блока; первая линия рецепции представлена тетралогией Р. Вагнера «Кольцо нибелунга», «Сагой о Вёльсунгах», переложениями песен «Старшей Эдды», другая – поэзией и философией Вл. Соловьева с отразившимся в них гностическим мифом в двух взаимодополнительных вариантах – о пленной, спящей Мировой Душе, подлежащей спасению героем, и о плененном злыми силами
герое, освобождаемом софийной героиней (причем вагнеровская интерпретация
истории Зигфрида и Брунгильды рассматривается как имплицитно содержащая в себе оба варианта софийного мифа). Показано также влияние Овидиевых «Любовных элегий» на формирование концепта «любви-войны» у Блока. Рассмотрены константные мотивы ранней лирики Блока, составляющие как сюжет о
воительнице, так и софийный сюжет (огонь на горе вкупе с брачным мотивом, пробуждение спящей героини, священная весна, измена героя и / или унижение героини, прозрение на пороге смерти и др.). Показаны модификации архетипических мотивов любви-вражды и любви-борьбы, поединка, рокового неузнания.
Выявлены постоянные взаимопревращения двух вариантов образа софийной героини у Блока: спящей царевны, т.е. героини пассивной, и воительницы, героини активной, соответственно в двух ролях участвующей в сюжете спасения.

This first article of the two-part cycle considers the image of the female
warrior in the early lyrics by A. Blok (1898–1904). The author demonstrates that it is strongly represented there but not in its pure form – the female warrior is usually interpreted by Blok as a variant of Sophia-like character. The sources of this image at Blok are revealed: R. Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, the Völsunga Saga, more or less loose translations of the Poetic Edda form one line of his creative reception, while another one is represented by the poetry and philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov reflecting the Gnostic myth in its two variants – of the imprisoned, enchanted, and  sleeping World Soul waiting to be rescued by the hero, and of the hero which is kept by the forces of evil and released by the Sophia-like heroine (Wagner’s interpretation of Siegfried and Brünnhilde is considered here as implicitly containing both variants of “Sophian myth”). The article also shows the influence of Ovid’s Amores on Blok’s concept of “love as war”. The constant motifs of Blok’s early lyrics constituting the plot about female warrior, as well as the Sophian plot are analyzed (fire surrounding mountain together with nuptial motif, awakening of the sleeping heroine, sacral spring, betrayal committed by the hero and / or humiliation of the heroine, epiphany and recognition at death’s door etc.). The modifications of archetypal motifs of love-hate and love-fight, of the duel, of fatal non-recognition are demonstrated. The paper also reveals constant mutual metamorphoses of two variations of Blok’s Sophia-like heroine (sleeping beauty, i.e. passive character, and female warrior, i.e. active character) which participates in the plot of salvation accordingly those two roles.

Публикация заметок Н.С. Гумилева к его драматической поэме «Гондла» позволяет исследователям творчества писателя значительно уточнить господствующие представления об этой пьесе и ее заглавном герое. Речь идет о ее источниках, образах, конфликте, сюжете и мотивах, принципах постановки на сцене. Сопоставление замысла поэта, каким он предстает согласно заметкам, и завершенного произведения выявляет существенный зазор между ними (а порой и прямые противоречия) и дает материал для любопытных умозаключений. Заметки эти также являются одним из свидетельств участия Гумилева в проекте «исторических картин» издательства «Всемирная литература».
Publication of Gumilyov’s notes on his dramatic poem “Gondla” allows to Gumilyov scholars to significantly refine dominant assumptions about this play and its hero. The notes concern the play’s sources, characters and images, conflict, plot and motifs, principles of its theatrical production. Comparing the original conception of the play as it occurs in the notes and the completed work demonstrates a considerable gap between them (and, in some points, even direct contradictions) which provides material for interesting conclusions. These notes are also one of the manifestations of Gumilyov’ participation in the project of “historical pictures” of “World Literature” (“Vsemirnaya Literatura”) publishing house.

В статье второй двухчастного цикла выявляется влияние на «Гондлу» ряда пьес Г. Ибсена: «Пир в Сольхауге», «Олаф Лилиекранс», «Воители в Гельгеланде». Подробно сопоставляются Лера и Йордис из «Воителей в Гельгеланде» – пьесы, написанной по мотивам саги о Сигурде и воительнице Брюнхильд. Обсуждается мотив «братственности» героя и героини в ибсеновской и гумилевской пьесах. Если черты воительницы в облике Леры/Лаик восходят, в частности, к Брюнхильд и Йордис, то черты обитательницы Страны Блаженных, куда Лера увозит мертвого Гондлу, – к образу таинственной женщины (феи-сиды), похищающей героя, из другого источника пьесы, а именно ирландской саги об исчезновении принца Кондлы, которую Гумилев читал во французском переводе Арбуа де Жюбенвиля (отсюда и образ принца-горбуна). На основе сравнения с последней пьесой Гумилева «Красота Морни», тоже восходящей к ирландским сагам, делается вывод о том, что мотив Страны Блаженных связывается в творческом сознании Гумилева, с одной стороны, с темой поэзии, избранничества, принадлежности к посвященным, сокровенного знания – причем совсем не обязательно христианского (скорее – мистико-оккультного), а с другой – со смертью и образом лебединой девы. К сравнению привлекается также раннее стихотворение «Я не буду тебя проклинать…» (1909) с похожим набором мотивов.
In the second article of the two-part cycle, the author explores influence exerted over “Gondla” by a number of Ibsen’s plays (“The Feast at Solhaug”, “Olaf Liljekrans”, “The Vikings at Helgeland”). Lera and Hjordis, the heroine of “The Vikings at Helgeland” (play heavily reminiscent of the saga about Sigurd and Brynhild), are compared in detail. The motif of affinity between hero and heroine in Ibsen’s and Gumilev’s plays is discussed. While the woman warrior’s features in the character of Lera/Laik are due, in particular, to the influence of Brynhild and Hjordis, the features of the inhabitant of the Land of Delight where Laik sails to with dead Gondla the heroine inherited from the mysterious woman (presumably, a fairy, or sidhe) who lures the hero to the Other World in the Irish tale about Prince Connla which Gumilev had read in the French translation by H. D’Arbois de Jubainville (one more source of “Gondla” where the image of the hunchback prince comes from). Taking into consideration the last Gumilev’s play “The Beauty of Murni” which is also based on Irish tales the author concludes that the Land of Delight gets associated in the poet’s artistic world with, on the one hand, the theme of poetry, being the chosen one, esoteric affiliation, secret knowledge (which is not necessarily Christian – rather, mystical or occult), and on the other hand, with death and the image of swan maiden. The early poem by Gumilev “I shall not curse you…” (1909) with a similar complex of motifs is also brought to the attention.
