Universities have historically played an important role in the development of modern civilization, influencing how humanity has been organized and innovated. In this way, universities have established their two most popular missions: teaching and research. More recently, the term 'third mission' has been the subject of a growing debate about how universities can provide greater benefits to society by addressing the grand challenges which humanity has faced, such as climate change, poverty, hunger. In this dissertation, I argue that universities have the potential to take a leading role in the development of global prosperity, if they develop a pragmatic strategy. My arguments are based on the analysis of existing theoretical models, such the concept of robust action (Ferraro et al., 2015), and case studies. I further offering an own conceptual framework to (1) provide evidence of how universities are unique spaces to develop transitions towards prosperity; (2) suggest how a third mission strategy can be successful by discussing the relevant principles and drivers; and (3) offer a potentially clearer and helpful definition for this mission to universities that wish to take this crucial role.

The diploma thesis is concerned with the topic of adaptation in organizations. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the view of technical and economic workers in automotive manufacturing organizations on the onboarding process. A partial aim of the thesis is to provide recommendations for the setting up of the process of adaptation of workers in the studied organization based on the identified views and preferences of the interviewed employees. LINC (linker of the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton) komplex je zásadní pro celkové fungování jakékoliv jaderné buňky. Je to spojovník mezi cytoplasmatickými a jadernými strukturami, díky kterému se mohou přenášet mechanické síly směrem do jádra. This chapter explores how the development of UCL East and the other emerging cultural institutions of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (Stratford, London) have been shaped by the area’s historical development and the mega event that precipitated their emergence – the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It locates this inquiry within a longer-term historical perspective on the relationship between large-scale educational initiatives that emerged as a form of ‘legacy’ from other, earlier, ‘mega events’ like the Great Exhibition of 1851 (Roche 2000) which have traditionally been seen as key signifiers of London’s modern urban development and, increasingly, as part of its heritage (see Johansen 1996). By examining the historical context of UCL East and the Olympics’ development, along with these older events and their educational legacies, this chapter will challenge the often solely future-oriented visions that can characterise university and other cultural initiatives’ development (e.g. UCL 2018). Fundamentally, it asks how far developments like UCL East are relying on particularised or limited conceptualisations of their host site and city’s pasts – both reified as ‘heritage’ or otherwise – within this future-oriented vision. This research draws upon a fundamentally archaeological approach: an excavation literally and figuratively of both the traces of the historic landscapes that large-scale educational developments are built upon, and of their relationship to former cultural and educational ventures in their host cities. The discussion focuses on three questions: • How does the history of sites like Stratford and Queen Elizabeth Park contribute to their representation and mobilisation as ‘useful’ or otherwise desirable for university-led urban development, and what are the implications for the perceived legitimacy of such schemes amongst existing communities (e.g. Strohmayer 2013)? • What does the longer history of London’s mega event development such as the Great Exhibition of 1851 (and the frequent subsequent use of such sites and venues for educational purposes both in operational and legacy phases) bring to current mega-scale educational developments such as that being witnessed in the Olympic Park? • What mechanisms could UCL East, and other universities expanding their presence in their host cities, utilise to engage proactively and sensitively with the history of their new sites and develop them as a focus for heritage-led activities for both their users and surrounding populations in future? The chapter takse London 2012 and The Great Exhibition as its key case studies given both events intentionally-created, large-scale, educational legacies (e.g. the Exhibition funding of ‘Albertopolis’ in South Kensington), with supplementary evidence from other mega events like the 1951 Festival of Britain. The research utilises a mixed contemporary archaeology and critical heritage methodology (e.g. Harrison and Breithoff 2017), employing analysis of excavation and survey records, non-intrusive site investigation and photography, and detailed critical discourse analysis of a variety of archival material (see Gardner 2018). It suggests that institutions such as UCL need to be aware not only of what came before at site- and city-wide scales, but also their own institutional histories and those of previous large-scale educational endeavours, if they are to succeed in their self-proclaimed mission to be relevant, sustainable, and welcoming to both new and existing communities. In densely occupied and contested environments like the East End and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for example, such a history encompasses the ancient development of London’s hinterland, past industrial glory followed by deindustrialisation, a story of change led by the Olympic mega event itself, and a controversial failed attempt by UCL to build an earlier campus on the nearby Carpenter’s Estate. The chapter argues that an awareness of the complicated synergy of event, ‘legacy’, and education can potentially assist in managing present-day developments, and provide a deeper understanding of how such ventures succeed or fail at engaging audiences and, attempt to operate sustainably. It proposes that if UCL East is to truly succeed in playing ‘a central role in the sustainable development of the local area’, and act as ‘a radical new model for how a university campus can be embedded in the community’ (UCL 2018), it must actively build upon a legacy not only of the 2012 Games and the history of its host site, but also learn from London’s previous examples of mega-event led educational development in the longue durée.

Task 6.3 of the REFRESH Project is concerned with scoping possible measures to improve water quality through collaboration with local stakeholders. This task is being undertaken at six case study catchments located in Scotland, England, Finland, Norway, the Czech Republic and Greece. Deliverable D6.18 represents the outcome of the collaborative scoping of solutions in the Thame sub-catchment of the river Thames, in Oxfordshire, England. A workshop was held on 20th April 2012 in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire, to explore the views of local stakeholders on measures to improve water quality problems for compliance with the Water Framework and Habitats Directives, both now and under projected climate change. After Katherine Mansfield’s untimely death in 1923, the first French critics who took up her cause instigated a myth which has continued to the present day. They were aided in this mythologizing process by her husband, John Middleton Murry, who, via severely edited volumes of his dead wife’s journals and letters in England, helped to promulgate a personality cult of his dead wife, enthusiastically taken up by the French to the point of hagiography. These are the slides that were presented at the launch of UCL's Research Data Repository event on the 5th June, 2019.The event featured three talks considering the impact of data repositories: on Open Science; on artificial intelligence (without slides); and on sharing and re-using qualitative data. These were followed by a presentation by the CEO of Digital Science on the benefits that Figshare can bring to an institution, and a short presentation on the context in which Figshare is being deployed at UCL. The event concluded with a question and answer session.

Margaret Murray, who was born 150 years ago, was one of the first archaeologists to be employed at UCL and one of the most distinguished, although her role in the history of archaeology is often underestimated. This article provides a brief outline of the career and contribution of a highly productive and innovative, if sometimes controversial, scholar, who also participated in the wider social movements of her time, particularly the campaign for women’s suffrage.

Writing is a professional skill required by graduate engineers. Many students arrive at university with poor writing skills, partly stemming from a lack of experience. During an engineering degree, students are expected to produce written reports (e.g. describing practical laboratory exercises) but are often not taught how to. We trialled a scaffolded approach with 1st year students, starting with an introductory seminar covering the basics of report writing (including contents, presentation, and examples). Students were provided with detailed supporting guidelines, and an overview of the mark scheme used in assessment. Over the course of two terms, five practical laboratories were carried out. After each laboratory, students completed a written report, building up from only a Results section, through to a full report. El ingreso en 1954 del arquitecto portugués Luís Possolo (1924-1999) en el Gabinete de Urbanização do Ultramar (GUU) de Lisboa-instituido diez años antes por el Ministro de las Colonias, Marcello Caetano-coincide con su envío a Lon-dres para participar en la edición inaugural del curso en Arquitectura Tropical de la Architectural Association. La materia científica de este artículo se basa, por un lado, en la revisión de la literatura encuadrada dentro del "estado del arte" y, por otro, en el estudio de fuentes primarias del referido servicio estatal, que se encuentran depositadas en el Archivo Histórico Ultramarino de Lisboa, además de la aportación de documentación personal del arquitecto. El ejercicio añade información relevante para un mayor conocimiento del referido curso de la AA, materia que tendría una importante repercusión internacional en el ámbito de la investigación y del diseño en la arquitectura en las regiones tropicales, desarrolladas en las décadas siguientes. También se va a abordar la influencia que tuvo Possolo en la actividad proyectual del GUU, y en particular su aportación como arquitecto para el Ultramar Portugués, presentándose sus principales obras, hechas tanto en el servicio público, como en la práctica privada.


The employment in 1954 of the Portuguese architect Luís Possolo (1924-1999) into the Lisbon-sited Gabinete de Urbanização do Ultramar (Overseas Urbanization Office-GUU)-which the Overseas Minister Marcelo Caetano had started ten years before-coincided with his sending to attend the inaugural edition of the course in Tropical Architecture at London's Architectural Association. Scientific matter in this article is raised, on one hand, from a revision of state-of-the-art literature on the subject, and on the other hand on primary sources from that State Office, to be found at Lisbon's Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, along with data in the architects' personal papers. The exercise adds relevant information for a broader understanding of that course at the AA, which would have a wide international repercussion in the field of researching and designing in architecture for the tropical regions through the following decades. The influence Possolo had on project designing at the GUU, and particularly his work as an architect for the Portuguese Overseas, shall also be engaged, as his major projects made in the civil service, as well as in private practice, are presented.

This essay is divided in to several sections; the first will briefly outline the international law regarding treaty interpretation such that we can proceed with section II, where we will interpret the legal implications of the treaty, while section III will discuss its practical relevance. Section IV and V shall refer to the Moon Agreement and its effect, if any, on outer space law. The essay will focus mainly on the concept of ‘appropriation’ of outer space by both countries and private entities. It will be concluded that the Outer Space Treaty is outdated in that it is not able to provide any practical regulations and the concepts it introduces are vague and unhelpful. What is required is a set of more specific rules and regulations, clearly outlining the extent of the parties’ rights and obligations in regards to using outer space in the future.

The main barrier for library exhibitions is that the communication system used in literature is completely different from the one of the visual arts. Consequently, major challenges arise when books and manuscripts become items displayed inside cases. Therefore, it is necessary to find alternative ways (to reading) in which the public can experience such material. But how can this be done? For conservation reasons, visitors cannot be allowed to freely handle valuable objects. So, what can be built around them to provide an immersive experience, while both preserving their natural function of literary material and protecting them from deterioration?
This study identifies three main areas to improve visitor experience, each one connected to the other: a sense of Narrative, illustrated through different levels of Interpretation, facilitated by Interaction (physical, digital, social) both with objects and other people (i.e. other visitors, or staff members). Acknowledging the fact that exhibitions are complex systems and therefore it is not possible to define one model for all, this work focuses on a specific case study, the Treasures of the British Library permanent exhibition. The aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the needs of the visitors of library exhibitions. Data on visitors’ profiles, behaviour, and experience, were collected through tracking and post-visit interviews, and then analysed in order to address visitors’ needs and expectations. The main needs identified involve: a sense of narrative, which should address different levels of knowledge and perspectives; characterisation of the space, to be manifestly relevant to the material exhibited; sensorial experiences and information about the stories of the objects, to preserve the ‘hands-on’ nature of literary materials.

SUMMARY Non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus (NDBE) occurs as a consequence of an inflam-matory response triggered through prolonged gastro-oesophageal reflux and it may precede the development of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. NF-kB activation as a result of inflammatory response has been shown in NDBE, but the possible mechanism involved in the process is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess, using immunohistochemistry, Survivin and Bcl3 expression as potential biomarkers for NF-kB activation along the oesophageal metaplasia–dysplasia–adenocarcinoma sequence. Survivin is an NF-kB-inducible anti-apoptotic protein, and Bcl3 is a negative regulator of NF-kB. There was progressive upregulation of Survivin expression along the oesophageal metaplasia–dysplasia–adenocarcinoma sequence. Bcl3 expression was upregulated in non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus, low-grade, high-grade dysplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma when compared to squamous group. The study shows the differential expression of Bcl3 between the squamous and Barrett's stage, suggesting that Bcl3 could be a surrogate marker for early event involving constitutive NF-kB activation. In addition, the study suggests that NF-jB activation may infer resistance to apoptosis through the expression of anti-apoptotic genes such as Survivin, which showed progressive increase in expression throughout the oeso-phageal metaplasia–dysplasia–adenocarcinoma sequence. This ability to avoid apop-tosis may underlie the persistence and malignant predisposition of Barrett's metaplasia.

This article outlines the lives and achievements of the British archaeologist and anthropologist Margaret A. Murray, mostly known as the assistant of Flinders Petrie. This publication hopes to give this woman the credit she deserves for her accomplishments.

From December 1954 to November 1973, Japan experienced rapid economic growth, which was referred to as the "Japanese post-war economic miracle". This miracle growth made Japan the second largest economy on Earth and improved the livelihood and economic conditions of Japanese people. In one hand it brought Japanese people new lifestyle in one hand and in the other hand wiped or weakened traditional or ancient customs and manners both spiritually and tangibly. For example, Establishment of social security systems enabled people to defect from extended family system and popularisation of the electric appliances changed people's behavioral pattern. This presentation investigates the process of the disappearance of Japanese traditional manners or customs or materials recorded in a four-frame comic strip Sazae-san (1946-1974) written by Machiko Hasegawa (1920-1992). This comic was originally serialised in the Fukunichi Shimbun, a local newspaper in Fukuoka prefecture and later moved to the Asahi Shimbun, one of the leading national newspapers in Japan. For a long term serialisation, traditional daily necessaries, old customs or many occupations, which appeared in Sazae-san, got away in the real life in Japan. In this meaning Sazae-san was not only a gag strip or a satirical comic but also a kind of a historical book which recorded the last of these materials. We will check scenes of Sazae-san describing these disappeared elements in daily life of Japanese ordinary people and examine social or folk backgrounds of such changes.

Anticipation relates to the perception of change. Therefore, dynamics is the context for defining anticipation processes. Since preoccupation with change is as old as science itself, anticipation-related questions go back to the first attempts to explain why and how things change. However, as a specific concept, anticipation insinuates itself in the language of science in the writings of Whitehead, Burgers, Bennett, Feynman, Svoboda, Rosen, Nadin and Dubois, i.e. since 1929. While Robert Rosen's work is the main focus of this article, an attempt is made to advance a perspective for the broad field of studies that developed around the notion of anticipation. Of particular interest are the circumstances of epistemological and gnoseological significance, leading to the articulation of the early hypotheses regarding anticipatory processes. Of no less interest to the scientific community are questions pertinent to complexity, adaptivity, purposiveness, time and computability as they relate to our understanding of anticipation.
