The future of news

Twitter makes visible some of the most fundamental divides in professional journalism today. It reveals tensions about what constitutes news, the norms guiding journalists providing it, professional identity, and public service. This article argues that these tensions result from a clash between the institutional logic of professional control (Lewis, 2012) and an ethic of transparency. Drawing from extensive research on a political press corps, involving observation, interviews, and analysis of tweets, this study witnesses the adoption of Twitter in the everyday working practices of reporters. It thereby also provides reasons why Twitter has been so successful in journalism. Tensions between professional control and transparency in journalism may, furthermore, be emblematic for divides in other professions today.

The visual presentation of articles to consumers of news media remains a challenge in the development of recommendation engines. This paper describes the use of an infinite canvas, a focus and context approach which allows users to take advantage of spatial relationships in a digital environment to understand connections between news articles. We describe how an infinite canvas, inspired by comic design, can be used to display related content, where articles appear along an X and Y axis. We present the results of an evaluation with ten participants who explored a digital prototype using a tablet device in order (i) to better understand user interaction through the completion of tasks and (ii) to test assumptions regarding the placement of recommended articles by time and relevancy. Participants responded positively to the infinite canvas, and provided various suggestions for future iterations, which we discuss.

This chapter discusses research on the policies, laws, and subsidies that create and shape the organizational
structures and practices that form the basis of the news media. The research reviewed treats news media
institutions as political actors and makes assumptions about journalism’s importance in a democratic society.
Although this line of research, with its emphasis on political economic and normative questions, often has been
marginalized in American mass communication scholarship, the authors explain its ongoing importance,
particularly in relation to the journalism crisis, and, suggest future directions.

The delivery of news on Twitter and social media to an increasing majority of people has replaced the attempt to disseminate facts and truth on traditional news media, with the new goal of massive engagement via likes, retweets, and shares, with the result that an informed public, however imperfectly constructed, is being shoved aside by a polarized populace seething with anger.

This report provides an overview of the common attributes of current news focused games, toys and interactives. It aims to provide a snapshot of the state of newsgames and related digital media a decade after much of the original work on the topic was produced. It offers observations about the subjects covered, mechanics, aesthetic and experiential qualities of such designed experiences.

The researchers collected 50 games which rest within the conventional
understanding of newsgames or news toys as defined in the
introduction. These games were somewhat chosen at random, although the
data set excluded games that were created as part of game jams or that failed to have a substantial play record (considered to be 10,000 or more plays as listed publicly). A list of more than 100 such games was paired down to 50 by reviewing news articles describing new releases in the newsgame space and culling case study analysis provided through prior research [2], [6]. Each of these experiences was played to completion, screen captured, and catalogued for this research. The data was collected in a relational database, the contents of which are provided at JournalismGames.org for further analysis by other researchers.

Findings include a relatively limited set of innovations in mechanics for such
play and heavy focus on politics, business practices, and empathy. The vast
majority of games researched were 2-dimensional games, primarily produced by
professional news organizations using HTML5 and JavaScript. Nearly all could
be completed in less than 10 minutes and offered only one ostensible level.
These news focused experiences predominately employ choose your own
adventure or action game mechanics, use a limited color palette, and are most
often editorial in nature.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought along with it concerns about anxiety, racial bias, and pushback against public health recommendations, all of which are intensified by the news and social media. This study investigated the effects of constructive journalism in the context of this crisis, by randomly assigning 492 subjects to view simulated social media news updates with different headlines and images. The results showed positive and constructive headlines led to less anger and anxiety than negative headlines. The sanitization of graphic images decreased anger, anxiety, COVID-19 risk perceptions, and anti-Chinese sentiment-a relationship that was mediated by anger and anxiety. These findings suggest constructive journalism can be useful in times of crisis, and that its visual aspect warrants more scholarly attention. Further, these results shed new light on the effects of news exposure via social media in times of crisis, and how this impact depends on specific attributes of the headlines and images of the content being shared. The findings are discussed in relation to the theory of affective intelligence and recent concerns about how news and social media influence the public in times of crisis.

In Democracy Without Journalism? Victor Pickard argues that we’re overlooking the core roots of the crisis. By uncovering degradations caused by run-amok commercialism, he brings into focus the historical antecedents, market failures, and policy inaction that led to the implosion of commercial journalism and the proliferation of misinformation through both social media and mainstream news. The problem isn’t just the loss of journalism or irresponsibility of Facebook, but the very structure upon which our profit-driven media system is built. The rise of a “misinformation society” is symptomatic of historical and endemic weaknesses in the American media system tracing back to the early commercialization of the press in the 1800s. While professionalization was meant to resolve tensions between journalism’s public service and profit imperatives, Pickard argues that it merely camouflaged deeper structural maladies. Journalism has always been in crisis. The market never supported the levels of journalism—especially local, international, policy, and investigative reporting—that a healthy democracy requires. Today these long-term defects have metastasized.

The paper describes newspaper Karjalainen’s transition process in organisational reform, which took place 2021 and assesses how the reform was received in the newsroom. It also looks at how Karjalainen succeeded in its strategic project towards digitalisation the newsroom in 2019-2021.

Regional and local media in Finland are fighting for survival alongside the rest of the media landscape. Two big questions for the media industry in 2022, both in Finland and globally, are a viable business model and a sensible way to organise in a digital environment. The latter is an essential part of the realisation of the former. Circulation of printed newspapers has declined almost without exception over the last 15 years. Vitality and growth will have to come from elsewhere. The key path chosen is the shift from print to digital media. Karjalainen is at the forefront of regional and local media in Finland, making a systematic and comprehensive shift towards digital media.

Karjalainen is a medium-sized regional newspaper that is number one in its region and has a strong brand in people's minds. In January 2021, the total number of staff was 47. This figure included contributing editors, photographers and archives. There were 33 writing journalists.

In 2018, Karjalainen decided to shift its focus to digital, i.e. to start making media strongly online. In 2018 it created its first digital strategy and systematically started changing its operations and organisational culture. This change was seen in Karjalainen as an ambitious and wide-ranging shift in approach and culture, not just small tweaks. The transition reached full speed in 2019. Deep change will only happen if the culture of the organisation is supportive of digital transformation.

One major step - and the core focus of this report - was taken in September 2020. Karjalainen’s top management started planning an organisational change in the newsroom - to build an organisation that supports better new digital doing. To push forward “digital first” thinking.

In addition to the planned measures, in 2020, Karjalainen's digitalisation process was also influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, an external factor that shook the world globally.

Our approach offers a view of the “Propaganda Model” developed by the linguist and American political activist Noam Chomsky 25 years ago and its current validity, with special emphasis on the five elements or filters. In this analysis, we tried to deconstruct the process and reflect on other components that filter the information. We also demonstrate how promoting this kind of analysis against the interests of the power groups in the ‘democratic societies’, tends to be marginalized institutionally.

Trump’s election laid bare structural flaws in our news and information systems. As mainstream news media sensationalized and trivialized what was at stake in the elections, social media amplified misinformation and propaganda. These media pathologies paved the way for the triumph of a demagogue. While criticism of such problems has escalated since the election, the underlying policies that enabled them have largely escaped scrutiny.

There is now general agreement in the US that the traditional model for American journalism—the advertising-dependent newspaper—is increasingly unsustainable. But beyond that basic observation consensus falls apart. There is little agreement over what new model, if any, will replace the old. Debate continues over the severity of the crisis and what can be done about it. And, more specifically, there are stark differences over what the role of the state should be vis-à-vis the journalism crisis. Resolving these differences is beyond the scope of this chapter, but using the American journalism crisis as its primary case study, the following essay assesses the structural transformation of the press and its implications for democratic society. In seeking a sustainable future for journalism, the chapter concludes with policy recommendations aimed at salvaging public media from systemic market failure.

Part Three of this book introduces the structure of “The Great Linking Project” which is a plan to link people of all races and religions, atheist and agnostic humanists, peace activists, civil rights organizations and some major alt-news sources such that we may start to work for peace better together, break MSMs monopoly on news, defeat "shadow regulation" raise alt-news and peace advocates collective internet profile, start to put an end to the endless wars and eliminate poverty and starvation on earth.

The business of journalism is an uncomfortable subject for many journalists and one they prefer to disregard whenever possible. Because the news industry enjoyed a rising tide of funding as advertising expenditures increased decade-by-decade during in the twentieth century, the question of how journalism could be funded did not arise and most journalists ignored business aspects of news provision. The swelling revenue from advertising allowed journalists disregard the fact that the news they produced was also being sold to consumers in a market transaction, but that its price was well below the cost of gathering, preparing, copying, and distributing the news. Considered in revenue terms, the primary business of newspapers publishing in the twentieth century was advertising not news. The movement of news to digital platforms, however, is forcing journalists to pay greater attention to the business of news and to wrestle with issues involving economics of journalism, the commercial value of news, how news audiences behave, what prices consumers will pay, how payment will be structured, and what opportunities exist for non-market funding. This chapter addresses issues involving the funding of digital journalism. To understand that issue, it is important for readers to distinguish between the terms funding model and business model. They are often erroneously used synonymously by many in journalism, but represent distinct concept and issues. The term funding model refers to how an enterprise makes money, but this is only one part of the firm's broader business model that specifies the firm's business logic, value proposition, value configuration, processes and relationships, and customer interactions (Picard, 2011a). Those issues are crucial for making the funding model successful. This chapter will using the term funding to refer to income/revenue received and funding model for the revenue configuration that makes it possible. How digital operation alters the economics of journalism The need for funding is directly linked to the costs of producing and distributing news and how the shift to digital operation affects those costs is important. Digital journalism alters the cost structures that exist when journalism is practised in print (Picard, 2011b). Digital operations do so by ending costs that previously existed for making newspaper copies and delivering them. In physical production (print), profitable operation is pursued by managing variable costs. This requires seeking efficiency in the unit costs of producing copies through economies of scale and reducing transaction costs. The environment provides significant advantages to newspapers with larger numbers of customers. In digital operations, however, serving additional digital copies has little cost effect and competitors tend to operate with relatively similar cost structures regardless of the number of customers. Costs are primarily affected by the scale and scope of content provided rather than scale and scope of copying and distribution costs. In this environment managing fixed costs becomes the challenge. Although digital journalism reduces the cost of production and distribution, it does not equally reduce the costs for gathering and processing news and news organisations have threshold level production

This chapter reveals how economic perspectives provide insights into journalism as a product, practice, and institution and how it is a factor in the changing environment of journalism. It reveals why the economics of journalism and news production are central to comprehending contemporary business and financial issues facing news organizations, developments of new forms of news provision, and what is happening to journalism in the twenty-first century. The chapter discusses how the characteristics of journalism and coverage choices affect economic value and consumer choice. It reveals how technologies and requirements for production and distribution are affected by economics and how these affect sustainability of journalism on different platforms. It explores how the business arrangements surrounding journalism are influenced by economic factors and how the development of new distribution methods alters competition and competitive positions of newspapers, news magazines, and television news. It shows how new economic factors in digital news operation make it challenging to construct economically feasible business arrangements. The chapter shows how insights from the economic perspective provide unique understanding of journalism, news enterprises, and the environment in which it takes place.

Can social media create a revolution? Certainly the first cyber-gypsies thought so. Hippies and radicals flocked to join the world’s first online community, the Well, in 1985 (Sinha, 1999).
In the thirty years since then, the Internet has become ubiquitous in most parts of the world where the population doesn’t have to consider its proximity to the poverty line too closely. The digital optimists – old and new – continue to believe in the socially transformative power of online communities (Rushkoff, 1994) and now they have added social media to their list of revolutionary technologies (McDonald, 2012).
From 2009 we began to hear of the so-called ‘Twitter revolutions’, first in Moldovia and then in Iran (Cohen, 2009). By 2011 and the ‘Arab Spring’, it had become a commonplace that social media foments revolution (Boyes, 2011; Tomlinson, 2011).
However, revolutions are made in the streets, not in cyberspace. Despite early utopian promises, the Internet and social media are not, in themselves, capable of overthrowing dictatorships, or even guaranteeing basic human rights, such as freedom of expression or association.
This paper argues that the idea of a social media revolution is a myth of the ‘digital sublime’ (Mosco, 2004), rather than an organizing principle for those who want to change the world. At best social media is a new battleground in the struggle for information control. At worst it can blind activists and commentators to reality (Morozov, 2011).
This paper outlines how and why elements of a ‘soft’ technological determinism inflect both journalistic practice and news discourse in relation to the Arab Spring. In particular it discusses how the ‘bias of convenience’ and a journalistic obsession with the ‘continuous present’ have a potential to distort the journalists’ ‘first rough draft’ of the history of the Arab Spring.

The good news is that policy makers finally see the crisis in journalism as a policy problem and are considering various proposals. The bad news is that many of these well-meaning efforts would, ultimately, only serve to prop up failing commercial outlets rather than ease them toward a more sustainable, nonprofit future. Short-term measures that disproportionately benefit incumbent news organizations fail to heed a key point: in the digital era, most forms of local journalism are no longer commercially viable. As evidence of a systemic market failure becomes abundantly obvious, democratic societies must acknowledge that profit-driven media systems cannot provide for all of our information needs. Public options are paramount.

This chapter explores the financial bases and challenges facing commercially supported, state supported and privately supported news channels. It discusses the implications of that funding as more channels attempt to operate internationally.

In November 2016, the Guardian published a celebratory obituary, online, of the Sussex University sociologist Brian Taylor, who had died aged 66. In May 2017, as a result of a decision by Readers' Editor Paul Chadwick,  the newspaper took it down, but did not explain the decision to readers.

My intervention in February 2017 led to the decision to delete the obituary. I did not ask for deletion. I asked the paper to add important information that was missing. Censorship was not a satisfactory response to the problem with the obituary. The article challenges the widespread notion that, in the age of global and instantaneous communication, foreign correspondence is becoming “redundant.” Based on a range of in-depth interviews with foreign correspondents in London, it examines the identity, newsgathering routines, and outputs of journalists working for a range of foreign media organizations. The study suggests that foreign correspondence is indeed evolving, but the changes are not necessarily for the worse. In fact, not only foreign journalists are not disappearing, but the heavy use of new communication technologies—rather than leading to superficial and low-quality reporting—can indeed support the pursuit of exclusive news-story angles and a fuller delivery the correspondent’s value.

Over the past decade, journalism studies has become an increasingly prominent area of research within the field of communication. This ascendance, however, coincides with a moment of deep turmoil for journalism itself. Thus far, much research has focused on specific aspects of journalism's transformation, leaving other areas of inquiry less developed. These gaps in the research deserve closer attention, especially as we begin to imagine journalism studies' trajectory into the digital age, with a greater focus on online news. Such a project requires a healthy degree of reflexivity. An examination of how journalism studies makes sense of the profound changes—in some ways dissolution—of its primary research subject brings into focus paucities in specific perspectives and research agendas. In this essay, I suggest that considering these neglected traditions could potentially enrich journalism studies by bringing it into conversation with other subfields and increasing its relevance for constituencies beyond the academy.

The commercialism driving much of the American media system counts among the many factors that enabled Donald Trump’s election. When it mattered most, too many American media institutions privileged profit over democracy. This does not mean that people working within the media industries are bad. It does suggest, however, that the incentive structures driving these media institutions are skewed. To contest a thriving ecosystem of misinformation, we need to redesign our news media system so that different logics are guiding it.

In the years after the 9/11 attacks by al-Qa’eda against the United States in 2001, numerous scholars have published new studies of the changing work practices of foreign correspond- ents or updated previous ones (notably Zelizer and Allan 2002; Thussu and Freedman 2003; Hamilton and Jenner 2004; Matheson and Al- lan 2009; Archetti 2012; McLaughlin 2016: 190- 213). A more recent crop of books has tended to examine the contemporary war reporting scene through a particular lens — that of the terri- fying, new-ish phenomenon of the targeting of news professionals (Paterson 2014; Cottle, Mosdell and Sambrook 2016; Armoudian 2017; Palmer 2018). This excellent new monograph, Reporting war and conflict, by Kevin Williams and Janet Harris, is one of the latter group. In it, the authors argue that managing risk has be- come central to foreign correspondence.

This review article starts with an Introduction consisting of a short semi-satirical dialogue between an imaginary son that questions the world-wide status quo established by the American Military-Industrial-Media Complex with his father who is a scion of it. Allusions to the Nazi regime and various parallels between them are mentioned. This is followed by Section I, a reasonably comprehensive series of lists of governmental and non-governmental organizations that collectively can be called the “Invisible Government” or “Deep State.” Questions are raised in regards to the formation of highly toxic sub-groups stemming from shared interests between organizations within the Deep State, and the possibility that fostering domestic hate groups could prove beneficial to an Invisible non-elected Government that wishes to continue to promote neo-Colonial policies around the world. Section II provides a short list of the Alternative News Media with links to them, which individually and collectively provides many clues to the machinations of the Invisible Government in influencing world events. Section III examines who is winning in the battle between the Invisible Government and the Alternative News Media for the soul of America. The rapid increase in violent civil and international conflicts and coups around the world and the rapid rise in the numbers of war refugees, along with comparisons between the financial backing of the Invisible Government and the Alternative News Media are cited to suggest that the Invisible Government is winning the Battle for the Soul of America at this time. Section IV offers some potential solutions to the Holocaust(s) fostered by the American Military-Industrial-Media Complex. The first one suggests that American voters and the world peace effort would benefit from voters reading more of the Alternative News Media as compared to Mainstream News which this writer compares to Hitler’s “Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.” A link list of useful alternative news media is included in this article.

This survey of journalists, editors, and managers working for news organizations in the United States explores the perceived import- ance of citizen and consumer role orientations among news- workers. It then examines how useful these professionals perceive particular audience metrics to be in fulfilling those roles orienta- tions. This examination takes into account the contextual factors that may influence those perceptions at the individual and organ- izational levels. We find that newsworkers perceive some audi- ence metrics more useful than others and generally perceive them to be more useful for helping them enact a consumer role orientation that has been historically deemed to be of lesser import. However, these perceptions vary across organizational contexts, and particularly according to the newsworker’s position within an editorial hierarchy. These findings contribute to the lit- eratures that argue that quantified audiences are an important part of role orientation formation.

This article challenges the widespread idea that, in an age of instantaneous and ubiquitously accessible information, foreign correspondents are doomed to disappear. The last study of foreign correspondents in the London hub was conducted 30 years ago. Based on a new study involving a range of in-depth interviews with foreign correspondents in the British capital, the article reveals the ‘‘story behind their stories’’ and the changes that have occurred since then. It particularly focuses on the impact that advances in communication technologies have had on the correspondents’ professional identity, newsgathering routines, and news outputs. The findings contribute to a more nuanced and empirical understanding of the impact of media globalization on the practice of journalism. They underline the increasingly important role of foreign correspondents as ‘‘sense makers’’ within the huge tide of information available. While foreign journalists have to a large extent always fulfilled this function, they appear more needed than ever in a deeply interdependent world. Foreign correspondents are also developing novel ways of reporting. Indeed, rather than a ‘‘crisis’’ of foreign correspondence, we could perhaps be witnessing its renaissance.

Durante mucho tiempo se ha hablado de la gran cantidad de información que generan las redes sociales y como estas están expuestas a rumores o fake news (noticias falsas), para eso el concepto de la post verdad hace un rol preponderante en cuando un grupo o una gran cantidad de personas comienza a virilizar, informar o retwitear información sin fundamento o carente de veracidad. El poder que hoy tienen las redes es entender el poder de las personas y la prensa cuando se alinean con temas puntuales y son capaces de manejar incluso la agenda de naciones o autoridades cuando son emplazadas pública y masivamente. En particular vamos hablar de las redes de microblog como lo son Twitter e Instragram, ya que son las más rápida en su interfaz de usuario y son usados por muchos gestionadores de contenido, medios de prensa y autoridades ya que por medio de cuentas "faro" o cuentas seguidas por una gran cantidad de personas permiten "viralizar" contenido de manera muy rápida y precisa, llegando a una gran cantidad de observadores que día a día están gestionando el "big data" con diferentes objetivos. Para este caso, la propuesta de generar valor agregado por medio del análisis de gran cantidad de datos por medio de data mining, la enfocaremos en la gestión de emergencias y reducción del riesgos de desastres.

La sociedad moderna es una época de la explosión de la información, aparecen cada vez más medios de comunicación y el ritmo de vida de las personas se acelera cada vez más.

El estilo de vida actual y la situación de los medios crea el problema de distinguir que información es verdadera o y cual es falsa. Como consecuencia la gente no cree completamente en los medios electrónicos y por ello sigue consumiendo la prensa escrita.
 
En los últimos años la influencia de China en el mercado internacional está creciendo y muchos países están dedicando un mayor espacio de noticias a lo que suceden en China.
Mediante el análisis de un año de lo publicado por un periódico mexicano se busca analizar las noticias sobre China que México publica.

 Se busca conocer la imagen de China que se presenta en México y así conocer cual es la tendencia; si es positiva o negativa. Con tal estudio se conocera la idea general que tiene México de China. Las noticias tienen un gran poder de influencia en una sociedad. Es primordial mantener la verdad y autenticidad en los informes noticiosos para no distorcional la vición de un individuo sobre una cultura o país. El profesionalismo de un reportero debe tener la caracteristica fudamental de comunicar la verdad y no dejar que sus intereses personales e ideas culturales interfieran con ello.

This article has several aims. First, it aims to sketch the historical use of the term "fake news" in the U.S. (now globalizing), while documenting key shifts (from comedic-economic meanings and uses to more "tragic" political-economic ones). The shift in use and meaning further corresponds to political-economic-entertainment effects, intermingled. Finally, recent discussions diagnosing causes and proposing solutions to correcting, containing, or eliminating fake news are considered (such as AI and ethical design, as well as cognitive bias) and critiqued, while different theories of causation and corresponding solutions are proposed.

This cross-national comparative case study of online news production analyzes the strategies of Cable News Network (CNN) and the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), aiming at understanding of the implications of organizational strategy on the role of journalists, explains why traditional media organizations have a tendency to develop a multi-platform approach (distributing content on several platforms, such as television, online, mobile) rather than developing the cross-media (with interplay between media types) or multimedia approach anticipated by both scholars and practitioners.
