Cold tolerance is highly desirable in Brazilian genotypes grown in Southern Brazil where cold temperatures damage crop establishment and reduce grain yield. However, the difficulties in selecting under field conditions and the lack of knowledge about the genetics of the character in the local germplasm limit breeding progress. So, the objectives of this study were to characterize different rice genotypes for their cold reaction in two stages of development and to determine genetic basis of cold tolerance in this germplasm. It is possible to differentiate genotypes cold reaction at the germination stage under controlled temperature by means of the percentage reduction in coleoptile length and its regrowth and to verify that exists variability for tolerance in Indica and Japonica groups. Este trabalho é uma história da polícia e dos policiais nas décadas que se seguiram à proclamação da República no Brasil. A pesquisa reconstitui as práticas do policiamento na cidade de Porto Alegre, capital do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, entre 1896 e 1929, no entrecruzamento entre a polícia tal como projetada pelos governantes republicanos e as experiências dos homens que exerceram diretamente esta atividade. A partir de fontes produzidas pelas próprias instituições policiais (registros de ocorrências, fichas de pessoal e inquéritos administrativos movidos contra policiais, entre outras) investigo quem eram, como viviam, trabalhavam e lidavam com a autoridade a eles atribuída os policiais - grupo ocupacional marcado pela ambígua condição de agentes da dominação estatal recrutados no meio social que deveriam controlar. Minha hipótese é que sua autoridade era constantemente reinventada e seus sentidos atualizados contextualmente, no âmbito das interações sociais. A dominação que os policiais exerciam ou pretendiam exercer, portanto, não dependia unicamente de seu mandato legal, embora não existisse sem ele.

ABSTRACT
This study is a history of the police and the policemen in the decades that followed the establishment of republican regime in Brazil. The research reviews the practices of policing in the city of Porto Alegre (capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul), from 1896 to 1929, in the intersection between the police, as projected by republican leaders, and the experiences of the men who exercised this activity directly. Based on sources produced by the police institutions themselves (incident reports, personnel files and cases against police officers, among others), I ask who were the policemen, how they lived, worked and dealt with the authority ascribed to them. Policemen formed an occupational group marked by an ambiguous condition: they were agents of state domination recruited in the social environment that should control. My argument is that the senses of his authority were constantly reinvented. The domination that policemen exercised or intended to exercise, therefore, did not depend only from its legal mandate, but did not exist without it.

A presente tese de doutorado versará sobre o momento histórico vivido pela sociedade brasileira a partir da segunda metade dos anos 1980, e o foco é a relação entre os quadrinhos da revista Chiclete com Banana e o rock nacional que despontou no Brasil no final do regime militar e teve seu auge na segunda metade daquela década. Esse recorte se deve ao fato de que  tanto os quadrinhos da revista Chiclete com Banana quanto as músicas de rock nacional podem ser tomadas como interpretações importantes para compreendermos as diferentes concepções sobre a cultura, valores e o estilo de vida de importante parcela dos brasileiros urbanos da segunda metade dos anos 1980. Para tanto, analisamos o contexto político-econômico brasileiro do período, cobrindo os governos de João Figueiredo à Fernando Collor. Relacionamos tal contexto com o rock nacional, desde sua origem até sua explosão mercadológica, ocorrida ao mesmo tempo que a revista Chiclete com Banana convertia-se em fenômeno cultural. Entender como a revista via o rock nacional e como ambos enxergavam o Brasil e o mundo da década de 1980 compõem o cerne deste trabalho.

This dissertation aims at presenting Chuck Palahniuk‟s novel Haunted as a portrait and symptom of the behavior perceived in the postmodern Western society, whose values, according to the author himself, correspond to “the opposite of the American Dream”. The main characteristic of such society is the individuals‟ difficulty in dealing with demands and constant changes in the individual, social and psychological spheres, a fact observed in the work of this American writer through the presence of marginal characters in a more often than not apparently unconscious search of self-acceptance or social adaptation. Looking back on her own novel several years after its composition, George Eliot said of Romola that it had been the novel she had written with her best blood, thus indicating a predilection for it among her other books. A survey of her critical fortune, even if a quick one, reveals that Romola is the least popular of her novels. Whereas a few contemporary critics, such as Henry James and Robert Browning, have published enthusiastic reviews, the general tone of these opinions is of disappointment. The most common reason presented is that George Eliot’s fourth novel departs too much from the reality the author knew so well and fails to represent truthfully the zeitgeist of Florence and Florentine people at the close of the fifteenth century. The result of such failure would be a novel constructed out of intellectual effort rather than poetic imagination, with an unnecessary flight to the past and foreign setting which produced improbable events and characters.
