Abstract: Internet scale DoS attack is a new evolution of conventional flooding DoS attack with the inspiration of shutting down the Internet due to its vulnerable infrastructure. Past DoS attacks directly attacked the victim, usually a single host. Consequently, defences were designed to identify the excessive traffic or filter illegitimate traffic. From the early two thousand, Internet scale DoS attacks started to appear. They aimed to disable highly connected routers or large links with a legitimate action in the form of low-rate traffic or high-rate wanted traffic with protocol messages that are unfiltered by congestion control. The latter can be more devastating due to its global impact therefore attracts the attention of researchers and some applications are now available. Recent enhancements have been proposed to the ATM Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service that guarantee a minimum rate at the frame level to the UBR VCs. These enhancements have been called Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR). In this paper, we discuss the motivation, design and implementation issues for GFR. We present the design of buffer management and policing mechanisms to implement GFR. We study the effects of policing, per-VC buffer allocation, and per-VC queuing on providing GFR to TCP/IP traffic. We conclude that per-VC scheduling is necessary to provide minimum rate guarantees to TCP traffic. We examine the role of frame tagging in the presence of scheduling and buffer management for providing minumum rate guarantees. The use of GFR to support the Internet Controlled Load Service is also discussed.

Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. These challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world.
