This is one of the high points of my work. I had done the work for many years, studied society from every point of view and amazed how less interested Finnish people were about European basic history. This part of the series is the key to understand how Rome broke into pieces: when the main capital lost its power, in every point of view, then the links broke down, and chaos begins. I was amazed at how precisely laws of chaos worked. I just looked at the forms and they told the path of chaos. Just amazing!

En estas líneas vamos a intentar recoger, analizar y estudiar los distintos instrumentos que el poder romano utilizó para acoger a los pueblos bárbaros en general y a los godos en particular en su propio territorio. Por ello, haremos un viaje desde el incierto origen de los godos hasta sus primeros contactos con Roma y su posterior inclusión en el organigrama estatal romano. Para ello, criticaremos determinadas fuentes literarias de este momento histórico y obras historiográficas clásicas que tienen una concepción bastante peyorativa de este fenómeno. Todo esto servirá para mostrar de forma sintetizada como Roma se valió de estos bárbaros y estos no fueron la causa última de su caída sino un recurso estatal para asegurar su supervivencia.

In the following lines we will try to gather, analyze and study the different instruments the Roman power utilized to embrace the barbarian peoples generally speaking and the Goths more specifically in their own territories. This is why we will go all the way through the history, from the uncertain origin of the Goths to their first contact with Rome and their later integration into the Roman state organization. In order to do so, we will evaluate different literary sources from this historical period and certain classical historiographical literary works that have quite a derogatory perception of this phenomenon. All of it will illustrate in a synthesized way how Rome used these barbarian peoples and they were not the last reason for its decline, but a valuable state resource to assure its survival.

Nuestro trabajo aborda el estudio de los puertos existentes en el reino visigodo de Toledo. Junto al intento de establecer su número, distribución y estructura –tarea complicada debido a la escasez de fuentes, tanto escritas como arqueológicas-, pretendemos analizar las relaciones de los comerciantes con el poder visigodo, así como las vías por las que se realizaba este comercio ultramarino, destacando la profunda divergencia que se establecía entre los ámbitos cantábrico y mediterráneo.

Abstract
Our project is about the study on the ports that existed at the visigothic kingdom in Toledo. Not only we are trying to find out their number, distribution and structure –a very complicated task due to the shortage of sources whether they are written or archeological- but also we intend to analyse the relationships between the traders and the visigothic power on the one hand and on the other the ways in which this trade was carried out, pointing out the deep disagreement that was established between the cantabrian and mediterranean grounds.

Resumo: A Queda do Império Romano Ocidental é um dos temas mais caros à historiografia dedicada à Idade Média. No processo que a desencadeou a chegada dos bárbaros cumpre um papel ambíguo: ora decisivo para a decadência de Roma, ora relativo ou mesmo negado. O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a relação entre a Queda de Roma e a chegada dos bárbaros a partir de uma perspectiva que abrange a análise historiográfica e o confronto entre as fontes escritas e as evidências arqueológicas. Para a realização do estudo será analisado o caso específico dos primeiros assentamentos godos na Aquitânia. Abstract The Fall of Rome is a very important subject to the historiography which deals with the Middle Ages. In the process that caused the decadence of the Empire the role of the barbarians is ambiguous: to some historians it is decisive to the Fall of Rome and to others it is relative or inexistent. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relation between the End of The Roman Empire and the arriving of the barbarians from a perspective that covers a historiographic analysis and the comparison between the written sources and the archaeological data. To the accomplishment of our aim we will study the specific event of the arriving of the Goths in Aquitania.

El libro que nos proponemos reseñar es una traducción de Rafael G. Peinado Santaella del
conocido libro Les royaumes barbares en Occident (Presses Universitaires de France, 2010) y cuya autoría recae en Magali Coumert y Bruno Dumézil. Magali Coumert es profesora titular en la Universidad de Bretaña occidental y su campo de estudio siempre ha versado en la época conocida como Antigüedad Tardía y/o Alta Edad Media, destacando su obra L’origine des peuples. Les récits du Haut Moyen Áge occidental (550-850) (Institut d’Études Augustiniennes, 2007). El segundo autor de este libro es Bruno Dumézil que es profesor titular en la Univerdad de París Oeste-Nanterre La Défense y su campo de estudio ha estado enfocado sobre todo al mundo de la tardoantigüedad con cierta predominancia del reino austrasiano en sus trabajos, de ahí que sea autor de grandes publicaciones entre la que debemos destacar su obra: La Reine Brunehaut (Fayard, 2008).

This postgraduate thesis aims to study and analyse the relations, the rivalry and coexistence between the Goths and the Byzantine Empire, focusing in the Early Byzantine dioecesis of Thrace during Late Antiquity. It begins with the presentation of the contacts of Gothic tribes of the Tervingi and Greuthungi and orbis Romanum from the time of Constantine I (324-337) until the crossing of Danube, followed by the description of Valen's Gothic war (376-382) and the crucial battle of Adrianople (378). The second part analyses the admission of Goths in the imperial lands and their rise to the higher ranks of the Eastern Roman Empire's military and political hierarchy during the reign of Theodosius I (379-395) and his successors. It also researches the matter of the so-called 'barbarization' of the Byzantine army. In this context, it presents a view of the life and career of important generals like Gainas and Flavius Ardabur Aspar. The dissertation concludes with the presentation of the relations between the Imperium Romanum and the Gothic leaders, Theoderic Amal and Theoderic Strabo, as well as the solution of the Gothic matter with the departure of the Ostrogoths to the West (489).

Byzantine Emperor Justinian I " the Great " is well known for conducting the Gothic War to recover Italy from the Ostrogoths. His coins minted at Thessalonica in Macedonia with their enigmatic reverse characters A-P have long challenged numismatists but may be best understood for their relationship to the war and as bearers of a slogan that promoted the Byzantine recovery of the ancient Roman homeland.

This article discusses a little known coin series from the Black Sea area. In the Soviet and Russian literature this series has been attributed to the Crimean Goths. The aim of this article is to introduce this coin series to the western literature.

El ámbito balcánico, notablemente ignorado por la historiografía española, constituyó uno de los pilares fundamentales para el Imperio romano de Oriente desde la traslación de la sede imperial a Constantinopla bajo Constantino I (ca. 324) hasta su alienación debido a la acción militar ávara y el establecimiento eslavo a comienzos del siglo VII. El objetivo de este I Seminario, encuadrado dentro del Máster Interuniversitario de Historia y Ciencias de la Antigüedad (MIHCA) -impartido por las Universidades Autónoma y Complutense de Madrid-, es analizar, desde una perspectiva global e interdisciplinar, los procesos históricos que tuvieron lugar en este área geográfica durante el período citado y su directa influencia en el devenir histórico del Imperio.

The Balkan area, notably neglected by Spanish historiography, was one of the backbones of the Eastern Roman Empire from the movement of the imperial see to Constantinople under the auspices of emperor Constantine I (ca. 324) up to its alienation due to the military action of the Avars and the Slavic settlement in the early Seventh century. The aim of this First Seminar, framed within the Interunivestity Master in History and Sciences of Antiquity (MIHCA) -imparted by Universities Autónoma and Complutense of Madrid- is to analyze, from a global and interdisciplinary perspective, the diverse historical processes that took place in this geographic area during this period and their direct influence on the historical development of the Empire

L'intervento che si propone intende concentrarsi sulle relazioni romano-gotiche nel periodo compreso tra il 332 (anno del trattato tra i Goti e Costantino) e il 376 (anno dell'attraversamento del Danubio), al fine di evidenziare i fenomeni di acculturazione che si verificarono lungo il limes senza soluzione di continuità, e nonostante la chiusura della frontiera stabilita nel 369. In particolare, si intende mostrare come la parziale cristianizzazione dei Goti si dimostri, già dall'epoca di Costanzo II, un elemento in grado di condizionare i rapporti di potere tra Romani e Goti, al punto da portare le autorità barbariche a intraprendere due persecuzioni anticristiane nel 347-48 e nel 369-372.
Già le fonti antiche evidenziano come l'obiettivo principale delle persecuzioni sarebbe stato in realtà quello di estirpare tendenze filo-romane in terra gotica. Sembra possibile, in effetti, individuare una tendenza delle autorità romane a servirsi dell'elemento religioso per garantire la fedeltà di popolazioni che non era stato possibile sottomettere con le armi. Come si mostrerà, infatti, Costanzo II sembra sfruttare la crescente cristianizzazione per raggiungere un miglior controllo sulla popolazione barbarica transdanubiana e assicurare così una maggiore stabilità delle frontiere. D'altra parte, nel 376 Valente accorderà a Fritigern il permesso di varcare i confini solo a fronte dell'impegno a promuovere la conversione dei suoi seguaci. Più che il riflesso del fanatismo religioso attribuito a Valente, tale richiesta sembra avere avuto lo scopo di semplificare le relazioni tra Goti e Romani nelle province danubiane e, ancora una volta, di garantire l'esistenza di un cuscinetto pacificato al di qua del Danubio, assicurando così la sicurezza dei confini.
Si mostrerà, dunque, come la stabilità del limes non fu ricercata solo con l'azione militare, ma al contrario grazie all'impiego di soluzioni diplomatiche e culturali, tra cui spicca la promozione della conversione al cristianesimo delle popolazioni d'oltreconfine.
