In this chapter, Myrl Beam looks at the strategies of the same-sex marriage campaigns and considers their implications for the future of LGBTQ activism. Specifically, Beam analyzes the decision made by some LGBTQ organizations to stop publicly focusing on marriage as an issue of rights or discrimination. Instead, in the final years of the same-sex marriage campaigns, these groups shifted their public messaging to focus on the question of "love". Beam examines why Minnesota marriage advocates made this decision, how they implemented it, and what results it produced. Beam argues that although this strategy proved successful at achieving marriage rights, it was also problematic for a variety of reasons. In particular, Beam is concerned that this strategy prevents building broad-based coalitions that have the potential to make larger progressive change. Wie verändert sich die herrschende Auffassung von Familie, wenn neuerdings auch Lesben, Schwule und Trans* vermehrt Kinder haben? Wie wird gesellschaftspolitisch debattiert, wer sich als Familie auszeichnet? In dieser ethnografischen Studie zeichnet Yv E. Nay nach, wie die Figur der ‚Regenbogenfamilie‘ als Kristallisationspunkt für die Aufweichung von Normalitätsvorstellungen von Familie dient und gleichzeitig konstitutiv mit einer Verfestigung rassistischer, kulturalisierender und nationalistischer Normen zusammenhängt. Dabei werden die Forderungen nach rechtlicher Anerkennung, das Ideal des Familienglücks und die Stilisierung einer ‚demokratischen‘ und ‚fortschrittlichen‘ Nation untersucht. Die Analysen münden in eine affekt-theoretische Reformulierung des analytischen Begriffs ‚Heteronormativität’ als eine Sehnsucht nach Normalität und in einen Vorschlag für eine Konzeption queerfeministischer Politiken affektiver Paradoxien.

This article tracks Jasbir Puar’s term “homonationalism” as its meaning has transformed in her scholarly work as well that of Maya Mikdashi. I argue that homonationalism has evolved from its original formulation as, in part, a critique of politics, into, in its current guise, a diagnostic of international political relations. Although this transition offers insight into the international scene, I argue that homonationalism also loses its distinctiveness as a political formation in its own right as well as its critical capacity in the process. In particular, I argue that homonationalism becomes incapable of critically
evaluating activist strategies, practices and discourses of political resistance.

This chapter studies Cypriot LGBTIQs’ intersectional politics amidst the socio-political environment within which these are articulated, marked by strong nationalistic discourses as well as tensions with European identity and belonging. Specifically, it examines the ways in which local and EU discourses about nationhood, gender, and sexuality shape dynamics of intersectionality. It does so by analysing how gender and sexual identities are formed and by questioning how these formations inform LGBTIQ movement politics in contentious contexts. The chapter employs a qualitative research design and thematically analyses empirical ethnographic data that includes interviews with Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot LGBTIQ participants. It marks intra-ethnic and inter-ethnic dynamics of in-group exclusions. The research argues that these exclusions are reinforced by local notions about ‘Europe,’ expressed through the ‘Europe/West-versus-the-Rest’ dichotomy. Nonetheless, it also finds that the successes of the Cypriot LGBTIQ movement have been based on opportunities afforded by ‘Europe’ and Europeanisation. Therefore, this chapter builds a theoretical and empirical framework for understanding the implications of understandings of nationhood, gender, and sexuality on LGBTIQ politics when the ‘Rest’ meets the ‘West/Europe.’

Queer Theory emerged as an academic term in the early nineties in North America. The mantle has since splintered into Queer theory, queer theories and “queer” as a variety of scholars, critics and activists continue to debate meanings and relevance. Broadly understood as an umbrella term for non-normative identities, Queer theory can also be read as a signal for any inquiry into the regulatory function of norms and an exploration of what lies beyond limits or boundaries for any form of thought or representation.

The history of queer politics in South Africa has been framed by tensions
between the struggle for gay rights and black freedoms. Christian and cultural beliefs and discourses underlie these past tensions and continue to inform black resistance to the plight of gay black men, and white gay activists’ ambivalence to black freedoms. These same religious influences, along with politics of power, largely exclude women and trans-persons from featuring in either side of the debate. This paper argues that contemporary gay politics has largely developed as a response to the policing of white gay men and in many ways has not developed into an intersectional queer activism. This paper adds nuance to existing critiques of gay politics of contemporary South Africa by analysing the construction of ‘civilised’ white sexuality within the political
discourse of South Africa. In addition, this article draws on a queer and
decolonial analytic to review literature which has explored the varied
agencies of religious, African and trans queer people. In doing so, this paper argues for the development of an ‘indecent’ activism that
challenges dominant narratives that frame queer activism in South Africa today.

Antonio Pantojas revela la historia de una geografía en San Juan hasta ahora poco explorada, la del transformismo. El término significa aquí el trabajo de hombres o mujeres que deciden cruzar las fronteras de las vestimentas relacionadas a su género para ofrecer espectáculos artísticos en lugares como barras, salones y discotecas.

El actor y transformista puertorriqueño forma parte de una generación que durante la década de los setenta articuló circuitos homoeróticos en San Juan bien definidos y con unos ejes urbanos distintivos. Nuestros principales ejes urbanos gay son el Viejo San Juan, Santurce, el Condado y Río Piedras, todos unidos por las principales vías de tránsito sanjuaneras y hogar de múltiples complejos de edificios multipisos, donde es posible mantener cierto anonimato. En la posguerra y los cincuenta todavía ese circuito era oculto, en los sesenta se comienza a formar, con la apertura de barras transformistas en el Viejo San Juan, y a finales de los noventa era ya visible y presente, con manifestaciones como la Parada de orgullo LGBTT.

La cultura gay de Puerto Rico se desarrolla paralela con la puesta en marcha del discurso de modernización del país. Esto, pesar de tener un movimiento conservador y fundamentalista organizado en su contra. El tránsito masivo de puertorriqueños desde y hacia las grandes ciudades de Estados Unidos formó una parte clave del proceso. Muchas de las personas que influenciaron a Pantojas, desde Myrta Silva, compositora y artista que tenía programas televisivos de farándula en Nueva York y San Juan, hasta el dramaturgo Pablo Cabrera, que fue profesor del Hostos Community College de CUNY, mantenían lazos estrechos con Nueva York y otras ciudades estadounidenses.

El mundo digital aún presenta un reto conceptual y práctico para las ciencias sociales en tanto su complejidad se impone ante los enfoques y las perspectivas. No obstante, su uso, aunque reciente, posee de antecedente a medios de comunicación como la prensa, la radio y la televisión. Es por ello que el presente trabajo hace un recorrido sobre el
papel de los medios de comunicación digital dentro de la lucha por la diversidad sexual en la Ciudad de México. Los
medios de comunicación responden a intereses económicos y políticos, pero el caso digital supone una ruptura en tanto es apropiado por organizaciones civiles para alcanzar sus objetivos y con ello, la reivindicación de una identidad colectiva que ha sido marginada políticamente, estigmatizada socialmente y socavada económicamente.

À l’aide d’un corpus de sources secondaires puisé dans l’historiographie internationale, cet article a pour but de réfléchir à certaines voies que pourrait emprunter l’historiographie québécoise pour stimuler, voire transformer, son approche de l’histoire de la sexualité. Les stratégies qui y sont suggérées visent à contourner un risque important qui guette l’historien.ne écrivant l’histoire de la sexualité, c’est-à-dire l’hétéronormativité qui distend son regard sur le passé. L’auteur invite les lecteur.rice.s à  s’interroger sur le potentiel déstabilisateur qu’aurait l’inclusion d’une perspective sexuelle renouvelée dans le discours historique québécois. La réflexion qui en découle propose un projet d’histoire des possibles sexuels, affectifs et érotiques, libéré des catégorisations et des idées reçues actuelles. Une histoire ouverte à la pluralité des relations possibles entre partenaires de même sexe ou non, qui pourrait apporter un éclairage différent sur les phénomènes politiques, sociaux et culturels ayant marqué la population.

This master thesis examined the impact of the European Union on the perspectives of homosexuality by the Ukrainian political elite since the EuroMaidan revolution. Despite Ukraine still being a rather homophobic country (Martsenyuk, 2012; ILGA-Europe, 2017), the country introduced certain legal improvements for the LGBT-community.

Through fieldwork in Kyiv and Brussels in-depth interviews with experts were executed. These interviews were analysed through thematic discourse analysis. For all reforms the European Union was the main influencing factor. While issue-linking during the negotiations processes for visa-liberalisation and the Association Agreement seems to be the most effective tools, the pro-European spirit since the EuroMaidan revolution should not be underestimated as well.
While EU-influence clearly led to legal changes, both Ukrainian and European officials and activists determined that the changes were rather marginal. While new laws liberalised some policies towards LGBT-people, the Ukrainian society, including the Ukrainian parliament remain rather homophobic. The openness towards the LGBT-community seems to be limited to the executive branch of power. Hindering factors for the evolvement of LGBT-rights in Ukraine are religion, nationalism and the occupation by the Russian Federation and pro-Russian separatists in certain Ukrainian regions.

Zusammenfassung: Der Beitrag behandelt familiale Existenzweisen von Lesben,
Schwulen, Bisexuellen und Trans*Personen (LGBTQ) vor dem Hintergrund bestehender
rechtlicher Regelungen und deren politischer Anfechtung. Anhand empirischer Fallbeispiele werden Facetten des Verhältnisses zwischen den rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und gelebten LGBTQFamilien herauskristallisiert. Dabei werden
Normalisierungsprozesse von Konfigurationen von LGBTQ mit Kindern nachgezeichnet
und problematisiert.

Résumé: Cet article traite des modes de vie familiale des personnes lesbiennes, gays,
bisexuelles et trans* (LGBTQ), en lien avec la législation existante et les interventions
politiques à ce sujet. Sur la base d’exemples de cas empiriques, les conditionscadres
légales sont mises en perspective, sous différents angles, avec les familles LGBTQ
telles qu’elles sont effectivement vécues. L’article met en évidence les processus de normalisation des configurations de LGBTQavec enfants et les problèmes que cela pose.

This paper discusses aspects of spatial politics and activism at the municipal Gay Community Centre in Tel Aviv. It focuses on one marginal group within the LGBT community that is active in the centre – gay seniors. Drawing on theories of queer geography, queer gerontology and geographies of activism and social movements, the qualitative research reported here uses in-depth interviews and participant observations to demonstrate how these men construct the space for their activity both inside and outside the centre. On the one hand, this spatial politics shifts along a delicate axis between proximity to the municipality and community hegemony, looking ‘inside’ the community on the one hand. On the other, it subverts and challenges the existing communal order, looking ‘outside’ to the surrounding society. However, these two directions are not necessarily binary; rather, as the paper shows, they stand in a dialectic that holds them in tension. This tension is evident in the ways in which the group operates from within the core of the hegemony, creating a complex non-dichotomous reality that enables politics that acts within – and despite – the mainstream.

Resumen:
En el presente trabajo se analiza la apropiación de Twitter por parte del movimiento LGBTTTIQA en México a través de un caso particular basado en #AmorEsAmor; del cual se extrajo información mediante el software NodeXL para identificar la red de interacción-comunicación generada, así como los indicadores más relevantes del análisis de redes sociales. Con lo anterior, el trabajo expone la dinámica de interacción-comunicación que se da a través de la información y la trazabilidad generada a partir de un hashtag, así como los sujetos y medios de comunicación que son colaboradores de los objetivos de dicho movimiento. Palabras clave: redes sociodigitales, movimiento LGBTTTIQA, comunicación emergente; Twitter; metacomunicación.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the appropriation of Twitter by the LGBTTTIQA movement in Mexico through a particular case based on #AmorEsAmor; from which information was extracted using the NodeXL software to identify the interaction-communication network generated, as well as the most relevant indicators of the Social Network Analysis. Accordingly, this article exposes the interaction and communication dynamics that occur through the information and traceability generated from a hashtag, as well as the subjects and media that are collaborators of the objectives of said movement.

Dieser Beitrag untersucht, wie der Wandel familialer und verwandtschaftlicher Nähe- und
Fürsorgeverhältnisse durch die Forderungen von Familien mit schwul, lesbisch, bisexuell,
trans* und/oder genderqueer lebenden Eltern nach rechtlicher Anerkennung politisch
diskutiert wird. Anhand einer diskurstheoretischen Analyse der Debatten im Schweizer
Bundesparlament sowie ethnografischen Datenmaterials wird der Frage nachgegangen,
welche Zeitlichkeiten in der polarisierten Auseinandersetzung um die Bedeutung des Phänomens ‚Regenbogenfamilien‘ und deren politischen Forderungen aufgerufen werden. Der Beitrag zeigt, wie die Erweiterung der rechtlichen Anerkennung von Familie durch homonormative und nationalistische Grenzen abgesichert wird und wie sich ambivalente
Normalisierungsprozesse konstitutiv für Fortschrittspolitiken herausstellen.

Over the past decade, the Israeli LGBT community has undergone processes of mainstreaming, institutionalization and assimilation, most of which took place in Tel Aviv, the Israeli center. Simultaneously, the Israeli peripheries were perceived as “empty”, as spaces that have limited or no LGBT visibility and presence. This article focuses on LGBT activists’ experiences in LGBT activist spaces in the peripheries. I argue that rather than reproducing the center-periphery power structure, LGBT activists are subverting the paradigm, while creating practices and imaginaries that engender a mode of becoming periphery. This mode is comprised of three major processes of becoming: the first belies the notion of the peripheries as spaces LGBT individuals can only depart from; the second subverts the discourse of LGBT peripheries as empty spaces; and the third offers a dual consideration of the center-periphery power relationship, both accepting the structure and the peripheries’ place within it but also deviating from the passiveness, static stances, emptiness and restrictive forms of sexuality. LGBT in the peripheries have begun creating a distinct kind of peripheral notion that diverges both from being an LGBT individual in the center and from the framing of Israeli peripheries.

This chapter provides an overview of the history of the LGB movement in Turkey, including the obstacles LGB people have faced since the 1970s. It argues that over the last 15 years, the Turkish LGB movement has made significant progress towards the institutionalization and politicization of LGB rights, which has turned the LGB community into a serious adversary of the conservative government.. While, the Turkish LGB community has forged new alliances within the opposition parties and acquired large popular support among the Turkish population, the strengthening of authoritarian regime under the ruling AKP party resulted in what can be defined as a backlash against LGB people.

Los nuevos movimientos sociales adquieren relevancia por su irrupción en el mundo de la vida desde los años sesenta del siglo pasado en diferentes sociedades; sus demandas han trascendido el espacio geográfico y por ende, se han replicado en lugares con  características  históricas,  culturales,  políticas  y  económicas  diferentes,  por  lo  que  su  desarrollo  en  contextos  complejos (Morin, 1994) permite identificar las similitudes, los retos, los logros y su devenir con el paso del tiempo. De esta manera, el  presente trabajo analiza el caso del movimiento Lésbico, Gay, Bisexual, Travesti, Transexual, Transgénero, Intersexual, Queer,
Asexual (LGBTTTIQA) en España y México, identificando sus similitudes, el contexto particular de acción y los retos a los que  se enfrentaron para garantizar su visibilidad y aceptación, así como las demandas que serán concatenadas posteriormente al
discurso de los Derechos Humanos como el matrimonio igualitario, cambio de identidad y adopción de menores.

Objectives: We aim to provide an understanding of the psychological sequela of androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) in phenotypic females in order to begin to inform psychosocial health care services.

Design: Eight adult women with AIS were recruited through the Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome Support Group-United Kingdom (AISSG-UK). Data was collected via two semi-structured interviews with each woman.

Methods: Transcripts were analysed using grounded theory and a conceptual model was developed which suggests a way of understanding the AIS distress experienced by the participants.

Results: The pivotal concept is a woman's fear of devaluation. This is connected to her level of adaptation and perception of having a compromised womanhood. These, in turn, are related to her medical management and involvement with others via a support group and in talking about AIS.

Conclusions: Participants showed a clear preference for open communication about their condition throughout the process of medical management. We recommend sensitive, pacing of information to allow young women and their families to make informed decisions about treatment and a realistic adaptation to life with AIS.

Una serie de eventos en Brasil durante el mes de septiembre de 2017 demostraron la fragilidad de los avances aparentes en materia LGBT. Estas acciones se dividen en dos grupos: contra la integridad física de las personas de la comunidad LGBT y contra espacios artísticos que retratan formas no hegemónicas de sexualidad. Este texto busca dar sentido a esas acciones por medio de la teoría queer. ¿Por qué la reciente violencia a la comunidad LGBT surgió en un sistema político progresista en materia de derechos LGBT? Se argumenta que estos hechos se deben a que el " homosexual " se lee de manera polarizada ya sea como un agente " normal " o como un agente " perverso ". Así, será necesario incluir nuevas dimensiones como raza, edad, religión, poder adquisitivo, nivel educativo, entre otros, en las reformas de derechos humanos.

Resumen: Este trabajo presenta un análisis en torno a las representaciones y prácticas asociadas en mujeres transexuales y la feminidad en la Ciudad de México. Debate que establece un vínculo entre lo político y lo ético, lo representacional y ontológico, experiencial y subjetivo.

Caribbean queerness has gained increased attention by activists working
in the Anglophone Caribbean. This is evidenced by a concerted effort
engage publicly, a wide range of issues affecting queer people across the
region. To this end, numerous advocacy groups have been formed in the
region and in diaspora metropolitan cities in North America and Europe
to address, among other things, the issue of criminalisation of
homosexuality in Caribbean countries. This paper provides an overview
of some of these recent human rights interventions, and also explores
other popular campaigns in the region that focus on human rights for
Caribbean queers.

En este artículo se analiza y evalúa una crítica formulada contra la teoría queer que apareció en un número especial de la conocida revista differences en el año 2015. En ese número especial, editado por Robyn Wiegman y Elizabeth Wilson, se cuestiona el modo en que los estudios queer conciben las normas, especialmente, aquellas posiciones que defienden una idea de lo queer como una mera oposición, enfrentamiento o corrimiento de las regulaciones sexuales vigentes. Además de demostrar que la lectura de Wiegman y Wilson es problemática, este artículo explora, en primer lugar, por qué se considera a lo queer como un movimiento anti-normativo y, en segundo lugar, si existen contribuciones queer que permitan evadir la crítica recibida. A pesar de defender la importancia de no caricaturizar los estudios queer, el artículo pone en discusión un peligro latente en este tipo de teoría crítica: la fetichización de lo transgresor y la demonización de quienes no logran encarnar el ideal rupturista. El artículo argumenta a favor de una teoría queer que, al mismo tiempo que ataque radicalmente la violencia normativa, pueda reconocer y entender las seducciones de lo normativo, incluso entre quienes habitan posiciones queer.

Esto es así, porque la intersexualidad es muchas veces invisibilizada incluso dentro de la propia comunidad LGBTT y sus logros. From the Arab Spring to the Umbrella Revolution, the last cycle of citizen protests has widely shared the strategy of  occupying  public  spaces  through  the  settlement  of  protest  camps.  Although  one  might  imagine  a  homo-geneous unity amongst the protesters, these encampments have been the scenario of multiple inner conflicts in relation with different vectors of oppression. This article discusses the conflicts faced and the coalition-building developed by queer activists in different encampments, with a focus on the relation between the occupation of queer spaces and the space of the protest as a whole. The Foucauldian concept of heterotopia is used here as a guide in order to understand the ambivalences and inner tensionsof the space of the protest without losing, nor idealizing, the utopian impulse of these movements.

El presente trabajo procura abonar a las reflexiones en torno al incremento de políticas públicas con perspectiva de género y la diversidad
sexual dentro de un marco explicativo del cambio sociocultural. Esto
nos permite ubicar como una experiencia epocal a las políticas públicas
en conjunto con los movimientos sociales, las concepciones corporales,
el erotismo, las nominaciones, la transformación de las relaciones de
poder y las formas de organización del conocimiento.

Dans une certaine mesure, la théorie queer jaillit de la négativité et s'en nourrit. La négativité en question peut être qualifiée d'affective en ce sens que la violence et l'oppression infligées aux sujets queers, ainsi que la colère et la résistance qu'elles provoquent, peuvent en général et dans un premier temps être caractérisées comme étant négatives. Mais alors quel est le statut philosophique et quelle est la fonction de cette négativité en théorie queer contemporaine ? Est-elle purement critique, purement réactive – voire autodestructrice – ou peut-elle indiquer dialectiquement le chemin d'un meilleur avenir queer ?[1] Le texte qui suit esquisse le bilan de la théorie queer contemporaine à la lumière de cette question de la négativité. Voici la position que nous défendons : il y a en théorie queer un courant ultragauchiste qui déploie la négativité d'une manière particulariste et antirévolutionnaire, tout d'abord pour des raisons de nihilisme actif – c'est-à-dire de cynisme/aventurisme – et en deuxième lieu pour des raisons d'angélisme moral. Cette étude est limitée par son caractère purement diagnostique, ainsi que par la nécessité de rassembler, d'une manière rigoureuse et systématique, des données non-anecdotiques pour concrétiser l'hypothèse qu'il y a, dans le militantisme queer, quelque chose qui ressemble à une dialectique de la liberté et de la terreur. Mais compte tenu de ces limites, il est tout à fait plausible de dire que les queers qui cherchent à se rallier au radicalisme politique font face à la question suivante : comment échapper au dilemme ultragauchiste, c'est-à-dire à l'alternative entre, d'une part, le nihilisme, et de l'autre, une sorte de libéralisme fondamentaliste ? Il n'est pas question ici d'éliminer la négativité des ouvrages et des interventions queers, mais plutôt d'examiner la manière dont cette négativité se manifeste aujourd'hui, ainsi que la manière dont les queers pourraient déployer une certaine négativité politique. Dans la mesure où cet essai offre un diagnostic du problème, il constitue un premier pas dans cette direction. Pour conclure, je proposerai certaines pistes s'appuyant sur les perspectives politiques ouvertes par Monique Wittig pour sortir de l'impasse. Je considère la négativité de ce texte même comme du mortier que nous pourrons utiliser pour bâtir la suite.
