Preliminary Report

The new excavations have also confirmed the surprising ethnic mix of material culture at Pyla: a Minoan amphoroid krater together with Cypriote pithoi and Canaanite jars in Sector 4, a Cypriot spindle bottle together with imported deep bowl and mug rhyton from the central plateau Trench 3.1, or a Canaanite jar, Mycenaean stirrup jar, Cypriot storage jar from the northwest trench , etc. To these may be added the Sardinian, Mycenaean and Hittite vases encountered in previous seasons. In view of the brevity of occupation and localization of the site, many of these objects may be regarded as resulting from intensive trade. The discovery of such mixed assemblages in all parts of the site, however, seems to suggest that all households had already adopted and adapted to a new set of practices. Why and how they did this are questions we would like to see answered during the following campaigns.

Pyla-Kokkinokremos, located just to the east of Larnaca Bay on top of a naturally fortified plateau, represents a singularly short-lived settlement in the island’s Late Bronze Age history. Established only a few decades prior to its eventual abandonment in the early 12th c. BC, the settlement represents a very valuable ‘time capsule’ of the Late Cypriot IIC-IIIA critical phase. The site was explored on several previous occasions, respectively by P. Dikaios, 1952; V. Karageorghis, 1981-1982; V. Karageorghis and A. Kanta, 2010-2011; Kanta, 2012-2013 (Karageorghis & Demas 1984; Karageorghis & Georgiou 2010; Karageorghis & Kanta 2014). Since 2014 Kokkinokremos is the object of a joint venture between the UGhent (J. Bretschneider), the UCLouvain (J. Driessen) and the Mediterranean Archaeological Society (A. During the first two excavation seasons (2014–2015) at Yurta-Stroyno site numerous glass items were found – approximately 510 fragments. The majority of the glass pieces found have higher fragmentation that could be caused by material deposition in Antiquity or in modern time. The glass items were divided into several basic groups: glass vessels, window glass, personal decoration, glass production waste. The typological classification of the glass beads and vessels is listed below. Several massive glass pieces in blue-green color were identified as examples of raw glass that was used for secondary glass production. Moreover, there are a number of so-called production wastes (threads and trails) from various stages of the glass-working processes. The method of XRF analysis was chosen in order to complete the data needed to interpret the finds.

Between 2007 and 2011, the Belgian School at Athens undertook excavations on the Kefali or Buffo hill, east of the village of Sissi, on the north coast of Crete, only a few kilometres east of Malia. The project has revealed the remains of a settlement and cemetery, used during diff erent phases of the Bronze Age (2500-1200 B.C.). This volume details the results of the 2011 campaign, the last in our first 5-year programme. The work in the different zones is described and reports on Late Minoan pottery, petrographic analysis, shells and ground stone tools are attached.

Since 2003 the Pyla- Koutsopetria Archaeological Project has systematically investigated a small region near the modern village of Pyla in southeastern Cyprus. Within this study region, the Hellenistic site of Pyla- Vigla is set atop a promontory of the same name, a toponym meaning “lookout.” Dating to the late 4th and early 3rd centuries B.C., the site was founded and occupied during a turbulent period in Cypriot history, one that saw the transition from rule by local city kingdoms to outright foreign imperial domination. Pyla- Vigla represents a key strategic position for warring Hellenistic kingdoms with interests in Egypt and those seeking to achieve superiority in the eastern Mediterranean. Recent archaeological work by the Pyla- Koutsopetria Archaeological Project has shed light on the lives of those living at a Hellenistic fort in Cyprus. The ancient ruins of Khirbat ‘Ataruz are perched on a ridge overlooking the Dead Sea above the Wadi Zarqa Main on the north, and the Wadi Sayl Haydan on the south. It is located 24 km south of the town of Madaba, 10 km west of the village Libb and 3 km east of the ancient site of Machaerus, in Jordan (Fig. 1).1 This site once stood at a crossroads where the ancient roads coming from the Dead Sea, the Wadi Sayl Haydan and the town of Madaba met. During the summers of 2011-2012, a small team of eight archaeologists, students, and volunteers along with eighteen Jordanian workers from the Beni-Hamida region of Jordan continued excavations2 at Khirbat ‘Ataruz under the direction of Chang-Ho Ji of La Sierra University (Fig. 2). This project was excavated with the cooperation of the Institute of Archaeology at Andrews University.3

In November 2012, during a preventive archaeological excavation necessitated by the construction of a new highway bypassing Sajószentpéter (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, North-Eastern Hungary), a Middle Neolithic water well with astonishing wooden lining was uncovered by the archaeologists of Herman Ottó Museum, Miskolc. The 60 cm high remains of the tube-like wooden structure was made from a single oak tree with a total diameter of 90 cm. The trunk had been initially cut into four pieces (panels) that were later bond together with trusses of twisted rods. The wooden structure had amazing tool-marks on the entire surface that could be related to at least 3 different chisels/axes and bear fundamental information regarding the chaine opératoire.

Švédův Stůl Cave in the Moravian Karst has been excavated several times since Martin Kříž started the first excavation in 1886. Two parts of the site were re-excavated in 2019. The primary aim was to conduct classical as well as innovative and experimental sedimentological and geoarchaeological investigations of sediments from the discarded spoil heap outside the cave entrance (trench C–D). Intact sediments with a small number of lithic artefacts and a large number of animal bones were also excavated during the 2019 excavation (trench A–B) located under the trench excavated by Bohuslav Klíma’s team in the 1950s. An attempt is being made using pXRF, benchtop ED-XRF and ITRAX techniques to link some of the sedimentary material in the spoil heap (C–D) with the stratified sediments in trench A–B. ost of the studies on the city of Ḥīra are based on Islamic Arabic and Syriac literary sources. Prominent among studies in Arabic is the research by Yousif Rizq-Allāh Ghanīma, which makes use of the 10century Kitāb al-Aghānī, among other sources, as well as the chapter on the same city by Dr. Jawad Ali in his Encyclopedia on the Arabs before Islam. Studies in foreign languages include the fundamental research by the German scholar Gustav Rothstein, which approached the literary sources critically while reconstructing the succession of princely rulers of Ḥīra. M. J. Kister’s research increased our knowledge about the city after he exploited the manuscript al-manāqib al-mazyadiyya of Abū al-Baqā’ (11-12 century), which offers relevant details not found elsewhere. Nöldeke’s translation and study of the history of al-Ṭabarī, in which he also consulted the Syriac sources, was a step forward in expanding the research on Ḥīra. The same can be said of the work of Nina V. Pigulevskaia, on the connection between Arabs, Sassanians, and Byzantines. There is also a survey article on Ḥīra by Irfan Shahid. The present paper adds another dimension to the sources mentioned above by making use of recent archaeological discoveries in Ḥīra unearthed during the latest season (2010-2011), in which important Christian remains were found.

In 2015, the Museo Egizio in Turin joined the Leiden expedition to Saqqara, in the area south of the Unas causeway. This report presents the expedition’s new approach as well as some first results of this new cooperation. In the 2018 season, the Leiden-Turin expedition worked in the northern sector of its concession, covering an area of ca. 250 sqm just north of the tomb of Maya. Here Late Antique layers overlie a wind-blown deposit containing some simple burials and numerous “embalmers’ caches”, some of which yielded marl clay cups with hieratic labels. An overview of both the pottery and the human remains found during this season is provided in the present report. Below the wind-blown deposit is a level with Ramesside funerary chapels and shafts. One of them has a remarkable decoration including six small-format figures carved in high relief in the middle of its back wall. The shaft of another chapel was also excavated, revealing several plundered chambers which yielded only scant...

The last field season of the Yurta ‐Stroyno Archaeological Project conducted in 2016 focused on finishing the excavation of the five ‐room house previously discovered in the southern part of the Roman settlement. Si‐ multaneously with the excavations, a targeted field survey took place in selected areas of the rural settlement. Moreover, the material uncovered over the three years of the project is being gradually processed, some of the preliminary data of a rather statistical character are also presented here.

The 2002 campaign of excavations took place in the fall, as usual, and lasted from August 24 to September 30. 1 ) This season our efforts moved from the "citadel", or main tell, to a small secondary tell, area "A", situated to its northeast. Explorations here in the first two seasons on the site had revealed a sequence of layers representing a later stage in the course of human settlement on Arbid and had led us to believe that a Mitannian settlement of consequence would be found here. The testing of this hypothesis became our primary objective for the seventh season of excavations at Tell Arbid.

Planning the 2001 campaign, we had in mind the same chief goal as in 1999 and 2000, that is, to uncover more of a structure of the 3rd millennium BC, provisionally called the "Public Building", which had been identified already during the first season at Tell Arbid in 1996. " ...

The 2010 campaign of the Zakynthos Archaeology Project took place on the peninsula of Vasilikos in the south-east of the island, where we had surveyed also in 2006. In addition to covering more ground by archaeological survey, the return after four years also enabled us to evaluate survey methodologies and changes in the landscape. In the area near ‘Banana beach’, where the landscape is being changed to accommodate tourist facilities, spots with buried ceramics dating to the Early and/or Middle Bronze Ages were discovered. The same periods were represented at a newly discovered site in the hills of Vasilikos-Doretes. A rediscovered Mycenaean tomb, a Hellenistic-Roman defensive post and a number of find concentrations show that Vasilikos constitutes an important diachronic archaeological landscape from the Palaeolithic to the present day.

The present report covers the 2015 campaign of excavations carried out in the central area of the plateaux to the west of the agora in the residential part of the town of Akrai/Acrae, south-eastern Sicily, which was continuation of the previous 2011–14 campaigns. The excavations have yielded until now a rich material dating to two main occupational phases in the Late Hellenistic – Early Roman and the Late Roman–Byzantine periods
