Noricum

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird aufgrund von intensivem Quellenstudium des lokalhistorisch relevanten Archivmaterials und Geländebeobachtungen, die Existenz der - nunmehr bereits durch erste Untersuchungen durch das BDA bestätigte - Ziegelei in Witzmannsdorf (Marktgemeinde Wallsee-Sindelburg) postuliert.

The excavations in the Roman Municipium Claudium Aguntum (conducted by the Institut für Archäologien, Universität
Innsbruck; head of excavations: Prof. Dr. Michael Tschurtschenthaler) concentrated on the centre of the city in
recent years. After some preliminary work in the 1990s a large-area excavation started in 2006 with the unearthing of the
Macellum. The geometrically accurate shape of this building is unique in the northwestern Empire. The best parallels for
it can be found in Italy and Northern Africa. Excavations in the area east of the Macellum started in 2008 and by 2010 it
became clear that the Forum was located in this area. The stratigraphy and associated small finds point to a Claudian date
for the construction of the Forum. However the Macellum was built almost 100 years later during the 2nd century. Both
buildings were in use at least until the mid of the 3rd century, when the greater part of the Forum was destroyed by fire
and as was presumably the Macellum. After some attempts at reconstruction and a partial reuse of the Forum area in the
3rd century, private buildings and work spaces occupied the city center during the 4th century. The last occupation phase
continued until the 5th century at least; the ruins of the city centre later being used as a cemetery.

In the castle of Traismauer, a picturesque city in the heart of Lower Austria at the mouth of the river Traisen into the Danube, the new exhibition ‘Treasures of Traismauer’ (’Traismaurer Schätze’) opened recently.
Traismauer, ancient ‘Augustianis,’ was one of several Roman forts along the right bank of the Danube. With a chain of defensive buildings and the connecting Limes road, the Romans secured their northern border. Outstanding remains of this place are preserved to this day and were recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition presents the visitors with a holistic picture of the Roman settlement, showing well-known and several recent archaeological discoveries from Traismauer’s Roman period, researched by commercial archaeologists from companies like ARDIG and the Bundesdenkmalamt (Austrian Federal Monuments Authority).
But not only ‘treasures’ from Roman times can be visited in the rooms of Traismauer Castle. Dedicated Traismauer residents have searched for traces through the city and tracked down patterns on houses, squares, and nature. Furthermore, contemporary program booklets, original music scores by great composers such as Strauss and Ziehrer, and many other treasures that make the hearts of music lovers beat faster are on display.

The newly written paper for Roman imperial silver coins is expanding the studied area of counterfeited silver coins discovered on archaeological sites by analyzing a hole geographic region stretching from the middle Danube in the East to the shores of the lower Rhine in the West. Aiming to prove the existence of a centralize pattern regarding silver plated coins distribution, the study expanded its investigation to include the random appearance of hybrid and plated hybrid coins. Besides this the focus will remain on counterfeited pieces, their proportions and distribution, with a smaller case study for the Severian period during when most plated pieces were dated for. Towards the end of the study new results can finally support previous debated arguments regarding coin distribution and patterns of distribution in frontier provinces, alongside with Rome's approach to silver plated pieces.

The settlement of Atrans on the Trojane Pass was situated on an itinerary road, still in the territory of Celeia in the province of Noricum, but close to the Italian border. It was a customs station within the framework of the Illyrian customs, and its officials are attested in epigraphic sources. This contribution presents an analysis of written sources, stone monuments, and images, with the emphasis on the heritage of the researcher Walter Schmid and the plans from a rescue
excavation led by Mirina Zupančič. The authors attempt to reconstruct the topography of the Roman settlement, including the size, position, and function of twelve Roman buildings. Dated between the 1st and 4th centuries, small finds do not originate from well-documented contexts.

Konzentriert man sich auf die zu den Agilolfingern überlieferten Schriftquellen, sieht man sich mit dem methodischen Problem einer ausgesprochen schmalen Quellenbasis konfrontiert, die erst ab ca. 600 eine sichere Ansprache von Angehörigen dieses ‚Clans’ erlaubt. Diese beschränkten ihr Wirkungsfeld keineswegs auf den bayerischen Raum, selbst wenn viele Darstellungen diesen Eindruck noch immer vermitteln, was die Forschung veranlasste, ihre Ursprünge bei den Burgundern, den Herulern, den Langobarden oder den Thüringern und schließlich den Franken zu suchen. Diese Frage tritt allerdings hinter der Feststellung einer übergentilen Versippung in den Hintergrund.

Ein spezifisches Problem stellt die Beteiligung der Agilolfinger an der herrschaftlichen Erfassung des Voralpenlandes im 6. Jahrhundert dar. Üblicherweise setzt bislang die Liste der namentlich bekannten Agilolfinger für den Raum Bayern mit Garibald I. ein, was nur auf Rückschluss aus der Lex Baiuvariorum beruht. Carl I. Hammer wies nun dezidiert darauf hin, dass es keine belastbaren – zeitgenössischen – Belege für eine Koinzidenz zwischen den frühesten Agilolfingern und dem bayerischen Raum gibt; im Umkehrschluss aber auch keinen Nachweis von Agilolfingern, wenn sich bayerische Herzöge quellentechnisch fassen lassen. Erst Tassilo I. kann aufgrund der Namentradition als direkter Vorfahr Tassilos III. angeführt werden, während Garibald I. als vielzitierter „Stammvater“ der bayerischen Agilolfinger lediglich als politischer Vorfahre anzusehen ist; eine lückenlose Stammtafel der Agilolfinger ins 6. Jahrhundert zu ziehen, muss als zu heikel gelten."

"The present study describes the history and the archaeological evidence of the passes and mountain roads in the eastern Alps from the beginning of Roman influence in the 1st half of the 2nd century BC to late antiquity. Based on ancient literary sources, which describe the Alps, their geography, their economic system and their political history, this study is an extension of research by ancient historians, who explored the slow expansion of the Roman Empire into the eastern Alps, and the special relationship between ancient human beings and the hostile environment of 
the high alpine regions. 
Ancient writers handed down the knowledge of their time about the extension, the height and form of the Alps. In addition to that, we have the names of the most important passes, mountain ranges and rivers, as well as descriptions of the typical products of the alpine regions from cheese to ferrum Noricum. There are also descriptions of the harsh climate and various dangers that faced travellers willing to make the journey over the Alps. These dangers effected special religious behaviour and rites on top of the passes in hopes of attaining the mercy of the gods. 
While Roman trade relations had already expanded from Aquileia since the 1st half of the 2nd century BC into the eastern Alps, the leading political groups in Rome showed little interest in that area and pushed ahead a very defensive policy which tried to define the Roman border along the first mountain ranges of the Carnian and Julian Alps. That policy was changed only near the end of the 1st century BC and between 15 BC and the middle of the 1st century AD, when the eastern Alps were integrated into the Roman Empire. From that moment, the first big street building programs were carried out, beginning with the renowned Via Claudia Augusta. 
Until the first 
Marcomannic invasions 160-180 AD, a heavy road net was build, mainly determined by economic considerations. During this period, not only are there archaeological traces on the most important passes used by the cursus publicus, but also on many smaller passes used by local traffic. Unfortunately, the fully developed Roman road system allowed access to the Germans, who invaded as far as northern Italy, 
crossing the pass Ad Pirum in the Julian Alps. Nevertheless, emperors like Septimius Severus carried out new road building projects and renewed the old traffic lines in Raetia and Noricum, until c. 270 AD, when the Roman Empire fell into general crisis and certain important roads were deserted and not maintained for many years. 
In late antiquity, with the reforms of Emperor Diocletian, the situation stabilized for many decades. A new phenomenon can be observed along different passes: the building of fortification systems and walls to protect the entrances to Italy. At the end of the 4th century AD, the final deterioration of the roman road system begins and Roman traffic came to a nearly complete end with the destruction of Aquileia in 452 AD. 
From numerous passes in the eastern Alps we have Roman evidence and small finds: stations along the most important connections like Immurium under the Radstädter Tauern pass (Salzburg), several milestones, well preserved remains of Roman road constructions as on the Korntauern and Mallnitzer Tauern, exact dated streets like in the Via Claudia Augusta in the Lermooser Moos (Tirol), street building inscriptions like on the Plökenpass (Venetia – Carinthia), sanctuaries and shrines with small cultic statues in high alpine regions like at the Hochtor under the Großglockner (Salzburg) or large fortification systems like on the pass Ad Pirum (Slovenia). 
This evidence shows a very diverse picture of Roman life in the highest areas of the eastern Alps and it can be compared easily with the much more famous evidence from the passes of the western Alps."

The book centres on a compact portrayal of the monuments of the Danube Limes in Noricum below- and above-ground, which make up the former Roman military border and continue to mark the landscape today, thus providing a succinct overview of the present state of research. The weighty texts and helpful plans introduce the general public to the work of the archaeological inventory service for the first time.
In 2018 a completely revised new edition was published as the first volume of the new inventory series »Österreichische Denkmaltopographie«, but for legal reasons it cannot be shown here yet.

This paper is part of a master’s thesis research about the significance and the expressive value of the Šempeter necropolis in this day and age. The monuments belonged to renowned families of the former Noricum leading part of the Celtic society, which in the time of the new roman government from Claudius’ regulation of the Noricum province around 45 AD, has successfully adapted to the new circumstances. The paper analyses the expressive elements of the Šempeter monuments, which lead to conclusions about: (1) The socio-economic position of the owners, (2) their appearance, (3) the relations between the families and (4) their fear of death.

Die römische Stadt auf dem Magdalensberg, von 1948 bis 2011 alljährlich in systematischen Grabungen untersucht, erbrachte beträchtliche Mengen an Funden, die Aufschlüsse über Nahrung und Ernährungsgewohnheiten geben: Tierknochen, marine und terrestrische Mollusken, botanische Reste, Koch- und Tafelgeschirr oder Amphoren für den Wein- und Lebensmittelimport aus dem gesamten Mittelmeerraum. Viele Graffiti und tituli picti auf Amphoren und Krügen erteilen Auskünfte über Menge oder Gewicht, spezifizieren den Inhalt oder nennen ein genaues Datum. Unter den Baubefunden sind einige Küchenensembles bekannt, die durch Funde an Küchengeräten ergänzt werden. Dieser reiche Quellenbestand gibt wertvolle Einblicke in das vorhandene Nahrungsmittelangebot der Stadt, in ihre Tafelkultur sowie die lokalen Kochgewohnheiten.


Summary:

Excavations in the Roman town on the Magdalensberg, which continued annually from 1948 to 2011, yielded enormous data as regards diet and dietary evidence: animal bones, marine and non-marine molluscs, plant residues, cooking pots and fine tableware; amphorae and jugs give proof of imported wine and foodstuffs from the whole Mediterranean. Furthermore, several graffiti and tituli picti on amphorae and jugs mention the weight or the quantity of their contents, but also a precise date. Besides kitchen-utensils, kitchens and their facilities were recorded as well among the archaeological structures. Therefore, this rich archaeological source permits to gain insight concerning the town’s supplies with foodstuffs, the dining culture or local cooking habits.

The paper analyses the epigraphic records written in epichoric languages and in Latin which mention plural divinities of the borders by tracking down elements that allow to identify the continuity of the epichoric cults in Roman time.

Aus den nördlichen römischen Provinzen Germanien, Noricum, Raetia und Pannonia, die sich südlich entlang der großen Flüsse Rhein und Donau ausbreiteten, sind zahlreiche Fluchtafeln auf uns gekommen, die interessante eigenständige Merkmale im Vergleich mit den restlichen Gebieten des römischen Reiches aufweisen und oft viel Gemeinsames haben, obwohl sie weit entfernt voneinander gefunden wurden. Die zahlreichsten Funde kommen aus Germania. Die Fluchtafeln aus Germania bezeugen eine ziemlich rasche und abwechslungsreiche Verbreitung des gemein mittelmeerischen Verfluchungsgutes bis in die nördlichen Grenzgebiete des römischen Reiches. Dies gilt auch für die leider wenigen Belege aus Noricum, Raetia und Pannonia.

Seit der Nennung eines Grenzgebirges namens Kετιον ὂρος (Cetius Mons) in der Geographike Hyphegesis des Claudius Ptolemaeus (um 150 n. Chr.) zwischen den beiden Provinzen Noricum und Pannonia Superior wurde vielfach versucht, dieses genauer zu lokalisieren. Spätestens seit der  Monographie Geza Alföldys über Noricum (London 1974) hat sich in der Forschungswelt der Trugschluss festgesetzt, es handle sich dabei nur um den Wienerwald.
Dieser Artikel möchte den Weg, der zu diesem falschen Schluss geführt hat, nachzeichnen und das Ergebnis korrigieren.

In northern Noricum, especially the military sites directly along the Danube river at the Roman Limes are subject to ongoing scientific research and have therefore been excellently investigated. The sites of the rural hinterland, on the other hand, are, mainly in the area of today's Lower Austria, incomparably less and partly even only rudimentarily known. To address this unsatisfactory imbalance in the state of research, the archaeological settlement activities in the area between the military centers on the Roman Danube border and the ancient municipium Aelium Cetium/St. Pölten was treated in detail regarding landscape and settlement archaeology during the dissertation "Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum." Selected results of the project, which will be completed in 2021, will be presented in the lecture, and new insights into the rural settlement in the Limes hinterland will be given.

Die Erforschung der römerzeitlichen Denkmäler im Grazer Becken wurde lange Zeit im Hintergrund betrieben,
es wurden de facto nur Streufunde und Einzelfunde gesammelt und diese wissenschaftlich kaum
bearbeitet. Mit der Erforschung der römischen villae rusticae und ländlichen Besiedlungen der Steiermark
beschäftigen sich die WissenschaftlerInnen erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten intensiver. Im Zusammenhang
mit dem Projekt „Koralmbahn“, welche eine der größten Bahnbaumaßnahmen der letzten Zeit in Österreich
ist, wurden im Vorfeld Begehungen und archäologische Ausgrabungen durchgeführt, wodurch auch
mehrere römerzeitliche Fundstellen lokalisiert werden konnten. So wendete sich die Forschung neben den
römerzeitlichen Zentralthemen wie Flavia Solva, Frauenberg, etc., auch anderen Themen zu, wie etwa
dem Leben auf dem Land.
Die archäologischen Befunde des Grazer Beckens liegen heute unter der modernen Metropole und mit
großer Wahrscheinlichkeit wurden sie durch Bautätigkeiten bereits zerstört. Im Gebiet von Graz konnten
bisher wenige großflächige Ausgrabungen durchgeführt werden; zu den Ausnahmen zählen die mittelalterlichen
Befunde des Grazer Hauptplatzes und die urnenfelder- und hallstattzeitlichen Siedlungsspuren
am Karmeliterplatz bzw. im Areal des ehemaligen Pfauengartens (Tiefgarage). Die römerzeitlichen Funde
konnten in diesem Bereich, wie so oft in Graz, nicht mehr in situ dokumentiert werden. Die VerfasserInnen
dieses Aufsatzes arbeiteten als ArchäologInnen bzw. GrabungleiterInnen bei den im Grazer Becken
bzw. im Grazer Feld durchgeführten Ausgrabungen (z.B. Bründlteiche, Abtissendorf) und beschäftigen
sich mit dieser Epoche. Das Ziel unserer wissenschaftlichen Projektgruppe, die seit 2008 besteht, ist die
Aufarbeitung der römerzeitlichen Ausgrabungen in der Steiermark in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut
für Archäologie an der Karl-Franzens Universität Graz, dem Universalmuseum Joanneum und dem
Bundesdankmalamt.

Keramikproduktion in römischer Zeit wird meist mit Drehscheibe und Töpferofen in Verbindung gebracht. Die Analyse von während der Kaiserzeit in der Provinz Noricum verwendeter Keramik zeigt jedoch, dass für die Herstellung der, oftmals als typisch für Noricum angesehenen nicht zur Gänze oxidierend gebrannten Keramik weder das eine noch das andere vorauszusetzen ist. Auf Grundlage der archäologischen und archäometrischen Daten zur in Noricum hergestellten Keramik wird, gestützt auf ethnoarchäologische Analogien, ein Bild eines möglichen Produktionsumfeldes entworfen. Dabei weisen Unterschiede in Gefäßform, -verzierung und -technologie auf das Vorhandensein unterschiedlicher Töpfergruppen hin. Innerhalb dieser wird Knowhow tradiert, womit Lernnetzwerke entstehen, die sich im archäologischen Material als Keramikregionen widerspiegeln. Die Veränderung des Repertoires eines Lernnetzwerkes wird meist durch reziproke Beeinflussung der Töpfergruppen initiiert. So lässt sich ein interregionaler Austausch bezüglich einiger stilistischer und morphologischer Keramikeigenschaften festmachen. Die Töpferwerkstätten selbst sind in Noricum archäologisch unzureichend erforscht. Bislang beschränken sich die Befunde auf Töpferöfen, ohne dass zugehörigeWerkstattbefunde bekannt sind. Diese Situation lässt auch keine Aussagen zu den in den Öfen hergestellten Produkten zu. Es ist allerdings festzuhalten, dass bislang keinerlei Ausschussware der nicht zur Gänze oxidierend gebrannten Keramik mit diesen in Verbindung gebracht werden kann. Damit bleibt eine Charakterisierung des Töpferhandwerks in Noricum auf die Keramik selbst angewiesen. Diese lässt im ethnoarchäologischen Vergleich darauf schließen, dass die nicht zur Gänze oxidierend gebrannte Keramik in Noricum in Betrieben hergestellt wurde, die nicht als Großbetriebe zu charakterisieren sind, sondern sich im Umfeld von household production/industry bis zur workshop industry, in Ausnahmefällen und zeitlich begrenzt auch village industry bewegen.

Roman pottery production is very often automatically connected with throwing wheels and kilns. In contrast, the analysis of pottery used during Roman Times in the Province Noricum shows, that for the production of not fully oxidised wares (which are often considered to be typical for Noricum) neither kilns nor throwing wheels are necessary. In this paper the production environment of pottery in Noricum is investigated on the basis of archaeological and archaeometric data gathered from the pottery and ethnoarchaeological studies related to pottery productions in different societies. Differences in vessel morphology, decoration and technology allow presuming different groups of potters in Noricum. Knowhow is imparted within these groups, which leads to the formation of learning networks. These networks are recognised in the archaeological material as pottery regions. Alteration of the repertoire within a learning network is mostly caused by the interaction of potter’s groups. It is evident, that an exchange of certain stylistic and morphological pottery attributes took place on an interregional level. The specific research on potter’s workshops in Noricum is insufficient at the moment. Most studies are restricted to kilns, without recognising other parts of the presumed workshops. This situation makes it also impossible to characterize the pottery produced in these kilns, but it should be considered that not a single piece of not fully oxidised ware can be reliably connected with one of the kilns. The study of the pottery production in Noricum is therefore restricted to the vessels themselves. Together with ethnoarchaeological analogies these allow presuming, that not fully oxidised wares were not produced in big workshops (large scale industry) but in the environment of household production/industry up to workshop (in exceptional cases and restricted to a short time period) even village industry.

CLASSICAL  AUTHORS AND ITALIAN ORE RESOURCES
The classical authors references to Italian mines are very scarce and mostly referable to times before the end of the Roman Republic. This is because, as Pliny recalls, the Senate had prohibited mining activities in the territory that was part of Italy: previously, as Virgil, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Strabo and Pliny himself affirm, the country was rich in all kinds of metals.

Particularly important was the exploitation of the Gallia Cisalpina fluvial and fluvioglacial gold terraces, during the period in which this territory was occupied by the Romans but was not yet part of Italy: we have impressive tailings of this activity throughout the Po valley, highlighted by the author, but scarce classical evidence only for some generic gold mines of the Salassi people, and for those existing in the Vercelli area (= Bessa, in today's Biellese). Many authors confuse these two areas together and, despite the imposing remains, belittle the product, which instead was remarkable.  Furthermore, the studies and the countryside explorations carried out by the author have allowed to highlight the presence, not only of some important Roman "aurifodinae" tailings, but also of those of many Salassi gold mines, as well as notable remains of a limes that arose after the Roman conquest of these Salassi gold mines and a part of their territory, followed by the conflicts mentioned by Strabo. The "ruina montium" exploitation process, applied in maritime Asturias and Galicia, originates in Cisalpine Gaul, but its essence has been completely misunderstood by recent French and Spanish authors, and it is completely false that it was applied to the tertiary sediments of Las Medulas, erroneously considered economically gold-bearing.

As for the other metals, the iron mines of Elba are known and celebrated in ancient times: the minerals used were limonite and hematite, not magnetite as many authors claim, because this was not usable in the ancient siderurgy.  The silver mines of Sardinia were also known, and destined to the "damnati ad metalla" in the first imperial centuries. And for Sardinia it is also reported a brief gold rush, denied by modern authors but confirmed by the recent gold mining activity propitiated by the author's observations on the presence of epithermal gold deposits. The gold and iron deposits that Strabo indicates to exist near Aquileia, in the Noricum, are located in present-day Austrian Carinthia. For other Italian areas we have only sporadic hints, concerning probable exploitation dating back to times prior to the ban, or referred to as curiosity: the most widespread information generally concerns some processed products, without any reference to the mineral used and its provenance: however, in some cases it is possible to glimpse the local origin, as in the case of Arezzo, Ischia (Pithecusa) and Sicily. The extraction of sulfur in Sicily was very intense, starting from the second century AD, but no classical author speaks of it.
