Desde el campo de la cultura y la política hispana, El otoño de la Edad Media en Castilla y Aragón ofrece un recorrido por los últimos años medievales en el tránsito hacia la temprana Modernidad para explicar el complejo proceso de conformación de estos reinos. Su autor, Ezequiel Borgognoni, es Doctor en Historia y Profesor de la Cátedra de Historia Medieval de la Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. Así pues, a través de una perspectiva de larga duración, que no desdeña las vicisitudes y mutaciones que operan al nivel de la coyuntura, el libro está dividido en dos capítulos que abordan los cambios acaecidos en el espacio peninsular durante el denominado proceso de “Reconquista” llevado a cabo por los monarcas cristianos de los territorios aquí abordados.

Los poetas goliardos del siglo XII es una obra en la que se recogen, en texto latino y traducción al español, los poemas satírico-morales de Walter de Chatillon, Pedro de Blois, Felipe el Canciller, el Archipoeta, Hugo Primas de Orleáns, y los poemas 1-55 (satírico-morales) y 187-228 (de taberna y dados) de los Carmina Burana.
Se analizan la condición de poetas de todos ellos: a través del libro se podrán conocer el espíritu y la elegancia de estos textos; sus conocimientos clásicos y bíblicos: son poetas universitarios, instruidos y cultos; su relación con las situaciones eclesiástica y política del momento;
el carácter de su sátira; y la poética de sus producciones.

Именно в этот период испанские земли были впервые объединены в границах единого государства, образ которого, сохраненный в Средние века, оказал самое непосредственное влияние на
становление основ современной испанской государственности. Для специалистов — историков, филологов и историков права, студентов соответствующих специальностей, а также всех, интересующихся историей народов Пиренейского полуострова.

Cualquiera que se interese por estudiar aspecto alguno relacionado con el cuarto monarca Trastámara castellano de nombre Enrique ha de enfrentarse, en principio, a un buen número de tópicos y clichés establecidos ya desde el propio Cuatrocientos castellano y continuados por el transcurso de los siglos, un camino de perpetuación de esos modelos en el que incluso modernos estudios historiográficos no han sido ajenos. Resume acertadamente todos estos problemas Nancy F. Marino al decir que

si la verdad objetiva existió una vez, se nos ha transmitido a través de unos relatos imperfectos, corrompidos por los historiadores que no sólo querían informar, sino formar el recuerdo colectivo de los hechos.

A pesar de que poseemos más crónicas de los años de Enrique IV al frente del trono de Castilla que de ningún otro monarca anterior o posterior, tenemos el tremendo problema de que los cronistas han desvirtuado por completo la objetividad historiográfica en su narración, haciendo claramente partidista su discurso por unos u otros motivos que no viene ahora al caso comentar. Este asunto, la desvirtuada imagen del rey, no pasó desapercibido al padre Jerónimo de la Cruz, la primera y casi única voz historiográfica hispana alzada a favor de Enrique IV dentro de una época, el siglo XVII, que resultaría clave en la construcción negativa de su imagen como monarca.

Jewish sources commonly refer to Muslims as “Ishmaelites” and to Islamdom as “the Kingdom of Ishmael” due to an alleged biblical genealogy that both Jews and Muslims accept. Other classic Jewish sources, however, associate pre-Islamic Arabs as well as Muslims with two other biblical nations, Ammon and Moab, even when, and even though, the “standard” appellations are at hand. The Ammon and Moab nexus is mentioned in academic literature but without much elaboration. This article investigates several Jewish mentions of the nexus – most of Hispano-Jewish provenance – and proposes five explanations for its use.

Les sources juives qualifient généralement les musulmans d’Ismaélites et le domaine de l’Islam en tant que “royaume d’Ismaël”, et ce au nom de généalogies bibliques reconnues autant par les juifs que les musulmans. D’autres sources juives classiques, cependant, rattachent les Arabes préislamiques ainsi que les musulmans à deux autres nations mentionnées dans la Bible, Ammon et Moab, et ce indépendamment de leur traditionnelle appellation d’Ismaélites. Jusqu’à présent, le lien avec Ammon et Moab n’a été que sommairement évoqué dans la littérature scientifique. La présente étude examine plusieurs sources juives, pour la plupart d’origine hispanique, évoquant un pareil lien.

""Bien que les études morisques aient permis, durant ces dernières années, une meilleure connaissance des morisques selon des approches aussi riches que variées, le thème de la conversion des musulmans d’Espagne au christianisme n’a été abordé qu’avec timidité. Pourquoi avoir poussé les musulmans à recevoir le baptême, alors qu’il était évident qu’ils n’avaient pas la foi dans le Christ ? Pourquoi avoir expulsé leurs descendants, après tant d’efforts pour les faire rompre avec l’islam ?
Ce livre se propose de comprendre les « règles du jeu » suivant lesquelles les autorités ont tenté d’effectuer l’intégration des musulmans dans la communauté des chrétiens par la conversion, avant d’organiser leur élimination par l’expulsion. Il donne une place centrale au thème de la conversion forcée.

La première partie nous conduit sur le terrain pour cerner le comportement des différents acteurs, chrétiens et musulmans, le poids de la violence et la place de la négociation dans le processus de conversion des musulmans. L’enquête articule la situation locale et les décisions politiques prises par les monarques, sur deux théâtres distincts, d’abord à Grenade puis dans le royaume de Valence. Les deux derniers chapitres rompent avec l’analyse des événements pour les resituer dans la longue durée des relations entre l’Église et les infidèles. Le traité du juriste Fernando de Loazes, composé en 1525 afin de démontrer la validité du baptême des musulmans de Valence, offre une voie d’accès vers la doctrine de l’Église sur les conversions forcées, forgée et mise en application au cours du millénaire qui va de la persécution des juifs par le roi Sisebut, au début du VIIe siècle, jusqu’à celle des juifs du Portugal par Manuel Ier en 1496.
La deuxième partie, « le temps des doutes », est consacrée aux suites de la conversion initiale. On étudie ici la façon dont les autorités chrétiennes conçoivent la conversion, la prise de conscience du caractère forcé des baptêmes, ainsi que les contestations qui s’élèvent contre l’usage de la force, tant de la part des morisques et des seigneurs que du côté des historiens et des théologiens qui poursuivent le débat médiéval sur la conversion des infidèles, débat auquel l’évangélisation des Indiens du Nouveau Monde et la résistance des morisques donnent une nouvelle actualité. Enfin, en remontant aux réflexions des juristes sur le droit de l'expulsion des minorités religieuses, on s’attache à montrer pourquoi la solution de l’expulsion des morisques s’est imposée sur les propositions concurrentes telles que leur extermination ou leur conversion par des méthodes brutales.

Le droit canonique, la théologie et l’historiographie de l’époque apportent ainsi de nouveaux éclairages sur les sources institutionnelles (les rapports des évêques et des inquisiteurs, les délibérations des conseils royaux, les correspondances d’État, etc.) qui, depuis plus d’un siècle, constituent le socle des travaux des historiens dans le domaine de la politique morisque.""

In the general field of cultural exchanges during the Middle Ages, this paper reasonably aims to review the more substantial repertoire of tropes and sequences in the church of Toledo, from its reinstatement in 1086 to the 16th century. How was the liturgical expression of the trope in Toledo? Where did it come from? What were traditions involved in transfers? How was its reception?, etc., are some of the issues addressed here.

"When the Orestes sarcophagus, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid, was reused for a Christian burial in the Middle Ages, there started one of the most complex and fascinating cases of the "survival of Antiquity" in the history of art. A convergence of historical, political, aesthetic, and psychological circumstances caused its imagery to be copied and reinterpreted with avid intensity at the end of the 11th century, emerging as one the foundations for the development of Spanish Romanesque sculpture. Taking the concept of Pathosformel, formulated by A. Warburg in the context of his Mnemosyne project, as an operative principle, this article explores the formal and iconographic iterations of the Roman reliefs in sculptures from the Romanesque churches of San Martín de Frómista, the Cathedral of Jaca, and San Isidoro de León.

The article aims to outline aspects, features and functions of a cluster of characters in some chansons de geste, in particular Yon and Gaifier, both designated often as rulers of Aquitaine (or Gascony). Around these characters, we can individuate a pattern, in which the Aquitanian lord gives the hero his daughter’s hand, which means power and sovereignty; other features linked with Yon and Gaifier are wealth and treachery. Some features of the pattern can be rooted in the 8th-century struggle of Aquitanian dukes to remain independent from the Carolingian centralization of the power. In the second part, some hypotheses will be advanced about the relationship of the “Aquitanian pattern” with the plot of the Medieval Latin text Waltharius and of the Spanish romancero commonly entitled Gaiferos.

"Saadia Gaon (892–942ce) viewed himself not only as a pedagogue and scholar, but also as the chief steward of his people’s religious health and interrelated constitutional ethos—that special scholar who is raised up by God “in every generation … to instruct and teach the people, that by his hand they might succeed in all of their affairs.” This self-perception is especially pronounced in Saadia’s commentary on Esther, which he construes as a specific paradigm of the manner in which Jewish life is to be lived amidst and in interaction with a dominant Gentile population. In his introduction Saadia didactically (and dialectically) unpacks the paradigmatic utility of the book by presenting seven “guidelines” (tadābīr) which are required for the socio-spiritual health of any ethnos (Arab. umma) “when abased beneath the population of the dominant powers”—which steps he subsequently applies to the situation of Israel in the book of Esther and around which, moreover, he organizes that book’s unfolding narrative structure. In the present article we briefly survey these seven “guidelines” and the manner in which they are “unpacked” by Saadia in the body of his commentary, focusing our attention on selected passages that reveal something of the realia—both psychological and practical—attending Jewish-Gentile conviviality, and Saadia’s approach thereto, in a tenth-century Islamicate milieu."

With the aim of investigate the causes to understand the effects, at least as a premise, this paper presents some short reflections on what parameters are more or less constant in the musical repertoire of medieval Hispanic kingdoms. Thus, love (also the fervour) is taken as authentic driving force and guide of creativity, with special emphasis since the twelfth century. Some significant and paradigmatic examples are taken to show some ways and contexts in which this occurs.

This article, drawing upon documents that trace the history of the extant Cancionero de Baena (Bibliothèque national de France, MS. Esp. 37; Dutton PN1) from the library of Isabel I (Segovia, 1503) to those that prove that Jorge de Beteta of Soria gave it to Philip II for the Escorial library in 1575 or 1576 and comparing its contents to works of Gonzalo Argote de Molina and BNE MSS/3788 (Dutton MN15), shows that ca. 1580 there were two copies of the Cancionero de Baena in the Escorial library as well as one of a “Cancionero de Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino,” which was in fact probably a third copy.

Este artículo repasa la historia de todos los testimonios manuscritos del Cancionero de Baena, en especial de la única copia que ha llegado a nuestros días y que se conserva hoy en la Bibliothèque National de France (MS. Esp. 37, Dutton PN1). Aunque este códice se halló en la biblioteca que Isabel la Católica tuvo en Segovia (1503), se aportan novedosas evidencias que prueban que un caballero de Soria, Jorge de Beteta, lo donó en 1575 o 1576 al rey Felipe II. Por otro lado, la comparación de PN1 con los trabajos de Gonzalo Argote de Molina y el cancionero manuscrito BNE MSS/3788 (Dutton MN15) prueban que ya en torno a la década de 1580 había, con toda probabilidad, dos copias del Cancionero de Baena en El Escorial y una copia del “Cancionero de Alfonso Álvarez de
Villasandino”, la cual es muy probable que fuera una tercera copia del Cancionero de Baena.

Composed in the late fifteenth century, Fernando del Pulgar's Crónica de los Reyes Católicos was the official account of-and therefore one of the best sources for-some of the most significant events in late medieval Spanish history. Within his narrative, Pulgar described the marriage of Isabel and Fernando (better known today as the Catholic Monarchs), the establishment of the Spanish Inqui-sition, and the buildup to the conquest of Granada. Despite the importance of the events that he described, as well as his own role as official historian, Pulgar revealed a radical understanding of history and history writing in his personal correspondence. In particular, Pulgar claimed that it was the historian's responsibility to embellish their account of the past and to change details to make their narratives as rhetorically compelling as possible. This essay explores how Pulgar embellished his official history to support specific nobles, the converso community , and the political interests of the Catholic Monarchs. In doing so, it not only provides insight into Fernando del Pulgar and the Crónica de los Reyes Católi-cos, but it also reveals the complexity and literary sophistication of the historical narratives produced at the court of the Catholic Monarchs.

The rigorous critical edition of the epistolar anthology copied in ms. Paris, BNF lat. 2858 and the unpublished Translatio Sancti Stephani aim to contribute to the knowledge of the literaryes ideas prevailing at Ripoll at the time of abbot Oliba, and it want especially enhance that the elaboration of these ideas has to be seen as an evolution of previous rhetorical models.

At first glance, The Captive’s Tale, which covers chapters thirty-nine to forty-one, is a military adventure. The Captive orients us by recalling the opening line of _Don Quijote_ 1.1, except that instead of referring to an unknown place in La Mancha, he begins in León and alludes explicitly to his bloodline: “Somewhere in the mountains of León my lineage had its beginnings.”

ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Ḥazm devoted much of his oeuvre to polemics against Jews and Judaism. In so doing, he often based his case on what he said were Jewish sources — which, he insisted, the Jews had falsified and fabricated. How familiar was he with these sources, and how did he acquire this familiarity? The article investigates a series of references to Jewish sources by Ibn Ḥazm, attempts to determine their origin — possibly the Talmuds and other post-Biblical works that contain Midrash — analyses his treatment of them, and ventures several hypotheses about the roots of his familiarity. While scholarship to date provides no unequivocal proof of the correctness of these hypotheses, Ibn Ḥazm’s recourse to Jewish sources in his polemical writings is evidently the result of thorough research on his part.

This thesis examines the cultural exchanges and the Europeanization process of Norway and Castile between the 12th-13th centuries, trying to determine the exact nature of the exchanges and to what extent European ideas were altered and re-shaped by the semi-peripheral actors to accommodate them to their circumstances and needs, becoming in turn centers of their own peripheries.

Este fragmento de texto de lo que se ha venido en llamar sermón de la toma de Granada explica, sin duda, la temática de este discurso homilético, de claro sentido encomiástico. Su forma y su contenido responden a una realidad cultural e histórica determinada: la evolución propia del sermón y el especial momento que vivieron los reinos cristianos tras la toma de Granada. Además de estos ingredientes, el sermón contiene, desde diversos aspectos, otros elementos contextuales que le hacen muy interesante para el investigador de la época.

En la voluntad humanista de estudiar el pasado por medio de métodos críticos se lleva a cabo, junto a una crítica filológica, una ordenación de los procesos históricos con objeto de facilitar su comprensión. Las etapas resultantes están determinadas por sucesos políticos que, según el pensamiento bajomedieval, constituyen hitos por sus repercusiones posteriores. Este artículo analiza la herencia clásica y escolástica, y las innovaciones humanistas, en la elaboración de cronologías seculares tanto de la historia universal (vinculada a la idea de Imperio) como regional de distintas formaciones políticas italianas  (Florencia, Bolonia, Milán y Venecia) y españolas (Castilla, Aragón, Navarra y Portugal). El análisis comparativo de las periodizaciones realizadas en ambas penínsulas permite comprobar tanto originalidades como influencias recíprocas.

When humanists study the past through a critic methodology they accomplish a documentary critic and a historic process in order to ease its understanding. The periods they establish are given by political events seen as milestone within late medieval thought because of their later effect.
This study analyses the influence of the Classics, Patristics and Scholasticism, besides the original thought in the composition of History lay chronicles. Periodizations are made for both universal and Italian or Spanish regional History.
Universal periodizations are tightly related to the empire idea (potestas universale). The dignitas is considered to persist in Constantinopla after the Western Roman Empire disappearance, restored by Charlemagne in the year 800 (restauratio imperii) and consolidated by Otto I in the Holy Roman Empire (traslatio imperii).
In order to study the regional periodizations the Italian chronicles have been divided into four geographic groups: Republic of Florence, Bologna, Duchy of Milan and Republic of Venice. Its main authors and their studies will be pointed out. The first part of these chronicles, although regional, present several common historic milestones related to the Creation, the Flood, the Tower of Babel, the Trojan War, the founding of Rome, the Ostrogothic domain, the Longobardic conquest of Italy and the character of the respective contemporary governments; to these events must be added the the different foundations of Episcopal sees and other particular events. The chroniclers studied are Giovanni Villani, Baldasarre Bonaiuti, Leonardo Bruni, Matteo Palmieri, Niccolò Machiavelli… for Florence; Boncompagno da Signa, Tolosano, Niccolò da Ferrara, Giovanni Cocchi, Matteo Griffoni, Girolamo Borselli, Cherubino Ghirardacci… for Bologna; Ogerio Alfieri, Galvano Fiamma, Pietro Azario, Bonamente Aliprandi, Bernardino Corio… for Milan; and Andrea Dandolo, Flavio Biondo, Bernardo Giustinian, Marco Antonio Sabellico… for Venice.
The Spanish chronicles are also arranged for four groups related to geography (Crown of Castile, Crown of Aragon, Kingdom of Navarre and Kingdom of Portugal). All of them relate the Spanish History until the Christian reaction to the Islam (711), explaining the national origins through Tubal and Hercules, and the Roman and Visigoth domination, as suggested by Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada and Alfonso X in Estoria de Espanna. The studied chroniclers are Pablo de Burgos, Alonso de Cartagena, Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo, Alvar García de Santa María, Diego Enríquez del Castillo… for Castile; Tomás de Canellas, Jaume Domenech, Pere Tomic, Gabriel Turell, Pere Miquel Carbonell,  Joan Margarit… for Aragon; Carlos de Viana for Navarra; and Fernão Lopes for Portugal.
Italian and Spanish chronicles are studied from a comparative perspective and each author specifically examined, paying attention to the peculiarities and influence between both peninsulas.

Resumen: Este trabajo profundiza en el estudio de la enseñanza universitaria durante la Edad Media a partir de la lectura atenta y detenida de los tratados empleados para la práctica docente. Estas obras pueden dividirse en dos grupos: textos de la Antigüedad (Aristóteles, Euclides, Catón, Cicerón, Nicómaco, Quintiliano, Donato, Prisciano…) y nuevas composiciones didácticas del Medievo (Alexandre de Villedieu, Uguccione da Pisa, Giovanni da Genova, Pedro Hispano, Robert Grosseteste, Thomas Bradwardine, Guarino da Verona, Lorenzo Valla, Juan de Pastrana, Rodolfo Agricola, Fernando de Manzanares, Angelo Poliziano, Antonio de Nebrija…). De la comparación resultante se ofrece una descripción explicativa sobre los contenidos integrados en cada una de las siguientes disciplinas: Gramática, Lógica, Retórica, Aritmética y Geometría.
Abstract: In the present work we intendend to delve into the study of university education in the Middle Ages through a careful and detailed reading of the treatises used for the teaching. These works can be divided into two groups: texts from the Antiquity (Aristotle, Euclid, Caton, Cicero, Nicomachus, Quintilianus, Donato, Priscian…) and new didactic compositions of the Middle Ages (Alexandre de Villedieu, Uguccione da Pisa, Giovanni da Genova, Pedro Hispano, Robert Grosseteste, Thomas Bradwardine, Guarino da Verona, Lorenzo Valla, Juan de Pastrana, Rodolfo Agricola, Fernando de Manzanares, Angelo Poliziano, Antonio de Nebrija…). After comparing the treatises, we analyze their content about the following disciplines: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Arithmetic and Geometry.

Este artículo enciclopédico ofrece un resumen de las cuestiones lingüísticas y culturales relacionadas con los conceptos de mozárabe, andalusí (particularmente romance - y árabe - ) y lo relacionado con este grupo cultural cuya importancia en Al-Andalús es cada día mejor estudiada.
