Library Management System

This paper aims to report a small-scale study that investigated attitudes to open source library management systems (LMS)s in UK higher education libraries. The study sought to establish
why the sector has been slow to adopt this technology, and how attitudes towards it in UK universities might change in the future. A quantitative online questionnaire was sent to all 181 libraries within the UK higher education sector and received a response rate of 46.4 per cent. The questionnaire was followed by qualitative telephone interviews with five selected professionals.

UK higher education libraries rely on peer feedback when choosing a LMS. With limited experience and a need for strong commercial support given uncertainty about staffing in the present financial climate, HE librarians are reluctant to choose open source LMSs. Participants also demonstrated a lack of motivation to change from current LMSs, suggesting limited adoption of alternatives in the near future. A higher number of questionnaire respondents reported considering adopting an open source LMS than in Adamson et al.; however, this may be due to open source advocates being more likely to participate.

Drawing on Adamson’s survey as a starting point, this study enriches the body of knowledge on open source LMSs by reporting and reflecting on the results of a survey and set of
interviews with higher education information professionals. It adds to the small but growing literature in this field.

Should my library utilize open source software (OSS)?  This is an important question, especially considering the possible benefits that OSS provides.  This paper seeks to answer this question by analyzing four different types of libraries and collections and how OSS could provide a benefit to each of them.  It also addresses different ways that open source library software can be deployed and maintained.

The study analyses the awareness about koha among LIS professionals and assesses the challenges in implementing and using koha. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 167 LIS professionals. The study concludes that library must appoint or hire a professional having sound technical skills in order to minimize the error handling and dependency on others for addressing koha related issues. LIS professionals have to upgrade their knowledge by attending training programs, workshops, and spend more time on practicing the technical part of koha.

Android platform is gaining popularity and holds
more users than other platforms. Earlier Librarian needed to
keep track of books in a vast room. But evolution of the
computers, smart phones and internet have made the work much
easier. LIBKART application helps the users to access their
required information and queries without the help of computers
or the librarians but through their android devices which saves
their time and energy. In this paper we provide an efficient
access over library system using a Smartphone application
named as LIBKART. The main purpose of this paper is to
provide an easy access to library and to provide details of library
books, issue of books and notify the user due dates of book being
issued. The paper also aims at providing a reference section of
books where the books can be downloaded through permission
from admin. The user can access the newspapers on daily basis
and can also download university question papers.

Koha is one of the most popular open source software worldwide due to its user friendliness, free availability and regular up gradations. Also, the need based customization make this software more powerful and likable among the librarians as well as the users as with a little knowledge of html script its WebOPAC can be made more interactive and personal. The WebOPAC customization feature of the Koha can be used by the librarians without having much knowledge of the html codes or web page designing. The present paper gives a case study of the WebOPAC of Rabindra Library-Central Library of Assam University. The customization done at the Assam University is totally need based and still complete features and options are not utilized to make it more attractive, however, modification of the WebOPAC is a continuous process and after using more options, the WebOPAC will be made more beautiful and interactive. In this paper an effort has been made to share the experience of Assam University so that other library professional can customize their WebOPAC and take their library resources to the users' desktop.

With the advancement of technology, library need to be ready for change and bring the technology to the library in order to retain their customer’s interest in visiting the library. Thus, in this situation, library’s system should be improved as well to facilitate staff or librarian in doing their work effectively. Introduction to Library Management System (LMS) in the library environment assists librarian in doing their work. Integration with all departments within the library shows how LMS is important in library environment and this conceptual paper will focus on the impact that the LMS brings to the library environment. The pros and cons of Library Management System (LMS) are also discussed in this study.

In recent days, Internet of Things has an essential influence in all elements of human life. The proposed system aims to implement the RFID based Library Management System with the Internet of things approach. This is achieved by hosting an application specific webpage of a library. Students can get access to the webpage with the help of any internet enabled device and avail the information regarding the availability of required book, anytime, anywhere. Along with this, the updated accessibility status of the book, whether it has been issued or not can also be availed. Student can also get access to the contents of the books, which may help them to compare the contents and select the required book. Moreover, the face detection feature implemented using raspberry pi will ensure that the book transaction process is carried out in a secured environment.

Currently, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and related topics such as Internet of Things (IoT) have an essential influence on all elements of human life. IoT as a prevalent phenomenon is transforming daily life by the usage of the smart features of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technologies. As IoT progresses, it has extended in size and dimension, improving many contexts of the society; such as, the traditional library system. This research proposes an implementation framework for employing the IoT in renovating the conventional library systems to become smart online library schemes. The IoT enables connectivity of a physical object (such as a book or other text typologies) with the real-time communication technology by using the RFID tags and tiny sensors. The continuous monitoring of books in real time and the tracking of labeled objects geographically are some desirable characteristics that result from the use of the IoT tags. These characteristics of IoT allow implementing an online library supply chain, integrating it with different types of technologies such as data bases, data gathering, and cloud systems. The Internet of Things can also provide a global linking of a huge number of libraries and universities in real time, all the time. It is concluded that the IoT-based library management systems will be a promising structure that can play a vital role in the human data organization and knowledge access by helping researchers, designers, and administrators in a more efficient and smarter manner.

Policies are not end in themselves but means to an end; in this view, policies must be given the necessary attention. Development, implementation, and regular review of policies are also very vital to the success of organisations. Managers should not take the process of designing policies lightly; for they form the basis of their implementation and review. This study looked at the design, implementation of organisational policies and their influence on employees' performance. Data was collected from one hundred and forty (140) respondents sampled randomly from selected four universities in Ghana. The data collected showed the views and experiences of employees in the selected universities. The results showed that policies were designed and implemented with full involvement of employees. With this practice, employees' performance in the universities was satisfactory and improved steadily. In the real sense of this research, the outcome of the study provided management and employees the steps to be taken in the design and implementation of policies as well as the benefits to be derived. This research is based on the assumption that workers at times exhibit lukewarm attitude towards work even though they are involved in the formulation of organisational policies, for this reason further studies could be conducted on organizational policies relating to employee motivation.

During the investigation and migration from one library system to another, there are many aspects to manage, some of these technical, while others are with personnel and change management.  The presenters delve into various facets of project management related to a migration from a traditional ILS and ERMS to a next generation library system or "library service platform" aka URM or Unified Resource Management System.  Rollins College was unique as the first library in Florida to migrate to Ex Libris Alma as well as Primo for front end user discovery.  The presenters discuss: layers of communication landscape, stakeholders, zero hour tasks, communication challenges, solutions, implementation of a ticketing system, looking ahead, and change management.
