En este texto se presenta el estado de la cuestión del arquitecto jesuita español Antonio Forcada, de cuya trayectoria se conocen escasos datos. Antonio Forcada nació en la localidad de Nuez de Ebro (Zaragoza) el 22 de marzo de 1701. Ingresó en la Compañía de Jesús el 12 de septiembre de 1735 como coadjutor temporal lo que le permitiría desarrollar su oficio de arquitecto, aprendido fuera del seno del Instituto. Los catálogos brevis del Archivo General de los Jesuitas de Roma afirman que en 1737 Forcada residía en el colegio de Onteniente (Valencia), donde se encargó de levantar la nueva iglesia; en 1740 en Gandía (Valencia), lugar en el que no consta su intervención como arquitecto; y entre 1741 y 1743 estaba trabajando en la fábrica del colegio de Tarazona (Zaragoza). Ésta sería su última edificación en tierras españolas, pues en 1743 fuedestinado a América llevándose  consigo una serie de planos de colegios de la Provincia de Aragón de la Compañía de Jesús, entre otros. Forcada llegó a Buenos Aires en julio de 1745 y cuatro años después, el 5 de octubre de 1749, realizó sus últimos votos en Córdoba. Se estableció en esta localidad durante seis años, aunque antes había permanecido en Santa Fe. Después viajó a las misiones guaraníes donde ejerció su actividad profesional sin descanso, hasta su fallecimiento en la misión de San Ignacio Miní el 30 de junio de 1767.

The study analyzes the origins and transformations of the Guarani Missions in Paraguay, founded by priests of the Society of Jesus in the borderlands of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires. Based on the analysis of events that occurred between the 17th and 19th centuries, the author reconstructs indigenous agency and the political and religious dynamics operating within the missions. The research is based on primary sources from archives and libraries in Europe and the Americas, providing a complex perspective on the practices of indigenous peoples and other sectors of colonial society before and after the Jesuit expulsion. Religion and Power in the Guarani Missions constitutes a major contribution to the understanding of indigenous agency in the context of colonial and postcolonial state formation, and broader socioeconomic and political changes in the borderlands. The book illustrates how, over the period of two centuries, the missions constituted a space of human interaction, where indigenous peoples negotiated their own meanings of time and history.

A utilização de correspondências sempre foi fundamental para a Companhia de Jesus. Atuantes em várias partes do mundo, os jesuítas buscavam informar seus superiores acerca dos sucessos e obstáculos da atividade missionária. Suas cartas também eram lidas por outros membros da ordem, buscando inspiração, e por um público letrado em expansão, que buscava notícias e curiosidades de regiões inóspitas. Este artigo propõe uma breve análise da estrutura e das funções da correspondência jesuítica, tomando como exemplo as cartas do padre Antônio Sepp, SJ.

The seminar paper examines the social effects of the mission by music in the Jesuit recuctions in early modern South America, drawing mainly on reports of German-speaking missionarys of the period. It also considers the intentions and the missionary attitude of the Jesuit padres and the way they see  the Indios as objects of conversion.

ABSTRACT
Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory study is to highlight mateology as both a force to strengthen entrepreneurial intensity (EI) and a useful new theoretical perspective for understanding the roots of dependency as it relates to social and economic development and the process of globalization. Design: The qualitative research design is descriptive and ethnographic, synthesizing current events at the Vatican with history that has shaped the industry of yerba mate from creation as the Guarani Indians' daily tonic for good health, aka the drink of the gods, and currency for trading with tribes such as the Incas and Charruas; until today as a product that is being rediscovered and situated to assume a position of dominance in the world-wide natural and organic beverage market by nascent entrepreneurs from the United States, South Africa and others at the forefront of the Marketing Entrepreneurship Interface. Methodology: This analysis uses a historical-structural framework to analyze yerba mate in the sociological tradition of Brazil's first entrepreneurship scholar and the father of dependency theory (aka globalization), Dr. Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Findings: Yerba mate grew wild in southern Brazil, northern Argentina, and all of Paraguay until it was domesticated, cultivated and finally perfected for export during the 17th and 18th centuries by European corporate entrepreneurs working for Company of Jesus. These actors employed indigenous Guarani labor on military reductions in the Rio de la Plata, alias missionary region of South America. Yerba mate remains a primary export commodity of the region, and is key to understanding the roots of indigenous, family as well as industrial entrepreneurship and economic development in the New World; otherwise known as globalization which is nothing more than the synthesis of mercantile, free-market capitalism versus cartel-communist socialism operating today at the local, national and transnational levels as a consequence of the Reformation and the continuing counter-Reformation. Research limitations: Mateology offers limitless research potential. Practical implications: This study offers a living research model for humanity that infuses the consumption of yerba mate with true history to form an experiential learning opportunity par excellence.  Social implications: The consumption and understanding of yerba mate is vital not only for all students and their faculty, but people of the world and the nations they hail from. Originality: Mateology opens new pathways to our understanding of spiritual and social reality, and proposes an alternative world of abundance based on a return to scriptural Truth and the indigenous roots of all Americans.

En este volumen se recogen las Actas del Simposio Internacional La Compañía de Jesús y las artes. Nuevas perspectivas de investigación, celebrado en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Zaragoza los días 19 y 20 de diciembre de 2013, vinculado con el Proyecto I+D Corpus de Arquitectura Jesuítica II; un proyecto interuniversitario e internacional, dirigido desde el Departamento de Historia del Arte de la Universidad de Zaragoza. En este encuentro quedó patente el renovado interés por el estudio del arte de los jesuitas y se expusieron las vías de investigación que se están desarrollando en diferentes universidades nacionales y extranjeras, presentadas tanto por prestigiosos estudiosos sobre el tema, cuanto por jóvenes investigadores, que explicaron sus trabajos, intercambiaron conocimientos, debatieron hipótesis, plantearon sus propuestas metodológicas y relataron la variada problemática surgida en cada investigación, con una discusión y debate en los que pudieron participar todos los asistentes. Todo ello se ofrece ahora al público en general –y a la comunidad científica en particular– en este volumen.

This chapter explores narratives about the past of the Jesuit missions in the context of the restoration of the Society of Jesus in the Iberian world in the nineteenth century. The first narrative is that of the Jesuits themselves, who try to connect their missionary past and present, by building a continuity based on the texts of the Ignatian spirituality (Constitutions, Spiritual Exercises, letters, hagiographies, etc.). The second narrative is that of the independent states that emerged from the collapse of the Iberian monarchies. Independent states expected from the restored Jesuit order to contribute to the construction of the new nations and the foundation of a new secular regime based on education. The third narrative is that of the local Christian communities, which had continued with devotional practices learned in the earlier Jesuit period. Religious practices of these communities would gradually become an object of condemnation by the returned Jesuits and ecclesiastical authorities for their autonomy and heterodoxy.

Este libro trata sobre el devenir de una serie de proyectos y realizaciones de un grupo de jesuitas que, más allá de llevar el Evangelio a los lugares más recónditos de su Provincia del Paraguay, tuvieron como prioridad salvar la vida de cientos de personas que caían bajo la espada y la cruz de una conquista exterminadora. Las “otras reducciones jesuíticas” son las que se ubicaron en el Chaco, noroeste y sur argentino-chileno, exceptuando las conocidas de guaraníes y chiquitos. Esta experiencia misional trajo nuevos e inéditos desarrollos poblacionales dentro del contexto del urbanismo hispanoamericano y con ello una arquitectura que se correspondía a la territorialidad y sincretismo de dos culturas.

Las Cartas Anuas de la Compañía de Jesús constituyen una de las fuentes más importantes para el estudio del periodo colonial americano. Especialmente sobre la actuación de la Compañía de Jesús que tuvo una singular participación en el devenir histórico de casi dos siglos de historia. El presente trabajo analiza esta colección documental en la sección que hace referencia al Colegio de Tarija y a las misiones de chiquitos. Ambos temas se encuentran estrechamente vinculados, cobrando un particular interés para el Instituto, a lo largo del siglo XVIII. Por esa importancia asignada, la riqueza informativa es sustanciosa en descripciones de todo tipo. Si bien contiene vacíos temporales, a partir de las Cartas Anuas se puede seguir el derrotero de un tiempo y espacio, escrito por sus mismos protagonistas.

El libro trata la historia de los restos arqueológicos conocidos como la “Cripta Jesuítica del Noviciado Viejo”. Denominación poco afortunada a la vista de las revelaciones históricas que contiene el presente texto. Page aborda los diferentes sitios donde estuvo ubicado el Noviciado de la Provincia Jesuítica del Paraguay, haciendo hincapié en el proyectado por el maestro-arquitecto Johann Kraus, sobre la base de una casa donada por los  hermanos jesuitas Ignacio y Francisco Mujica. También evoca los singulares destinos ulteriores que tuvo, donde funcionó la Casa de Ejercicios, Hospital de Bethlemitas… Incluye la vida de los primeros novicios y las no pocas penurias de los jóvenes exiliados en 1767. El tiempo, la memoria colectiva y la intervención del hombre, hicieron desaparecer el edificio del siglo XVIII. Después de mucho tiempo y como un hecho casual, parte del mismo fue redescubierto debajo de la avenida Colón, siendo oportunamente recuperado en 1990.

El P. Lorenzo fue un jesuita vallisoletano que permaneció más de dos décadas en la provincia jesuítica del Paraguay. Lo hizo hasta la expulsión y, desde su exilio en Faenza, colaboró con el famoso P. Pedro Calatayud, quien pensó escribir una historia de las misiones del Paraguay, debido a un afecto juvenil por misionar en las Indias. Lo ayudó como varios otros jesuitas, enviándole una valiosa información que le permitiría cumplir con su objetivo. Entre ellos los PP. Cardiel, Quiroga y Casado. Pero sin duda, la relación de este último fue la más completa, extensa y detallada, aunque al quedar inédita, es prácticamente desconocida, hasta ahora.
El P. Calatayud llegó a contar con todo ese material y componer un borrador de un libro que quedó inédito, debido a su fallecimiento. Pero no solo se conservó su texto inconcluso sino, sobre todo, los que sus colaboradores le enviaron a su residencia en Bolonia.

Los primeros jesuitas que llegaron al Paraguay lo hicieron desde la Asistencia de Portugal, con el consentimiento del provincial del Perú, creando las residencias de Asunción y Villa Rica como base de sus operaciones misionales. Tuvieron contacto directo con los actores de aquel tiempo y se expusieron a sus enfrentamientos, de los que en ocasiones fueron mediadores. A través de fuentes documentales, relatos de viajeros y una seleccionada bibliografía, abordamos el trabajo desde el campo temático de la evangelización temprana de los jesuitas en la región, quienes se situaron y comprendieron lo que significó una zona de conflicto, por la utilización de la mano de obra indígena, asumiendo causas y consecuencias.

La publicación de la biografía del P. Marciel de Lorenzana es parte de un proyecto del programa de investigación “Antiguos Jesuitas en Iberoamérica” del CIECS-CONICET/UNC que revaloriza la obra inédita del P. Diego de Boroa (1585-1657), quien llegado de España, alcanzó a ser provincial del Paraguay (1634-1640), falleciendo en la reducción de San Miguel en Rio Grande do Sul. Fue a su vez un impecable historiador que trabajó el género biográfico como ninguno en su época, quedando su obra injustamente inédita. En el grupo de investigación sobre la obra inédita de este jesuita participan del tema, Silvana M. Lovay quien publicó una autobiografía del P. Boroa y Lucía Page dando a conocer la vida del misionero italiano P. Alonso D´Aragona escrita por Boroa. En esta oportunidad damos a luz su obra más extensa, con la inestimable colaboración de Victoria Vagni y Martín Barrabino, a quienes agradecemos, al igual que a Fernando Alen quien nos cedió la hermosa y contundente fotografía de tapa.
El P. Lorenzana fue el primer misionero de la Asistencia de España que llegó al Paraguay. Allí lo esperaba el P. Saloni quien desde la residencia de Asunción lo llevó a las afueras de la ciudad en misión itinerante, teniendo el primer contacto con los guaraníes (1593). No solo eso sino que también viajaron juntos a Villarrica, donde debe haber tenido oportunidad de ver las poblaciones de indígenas cristianos que había logrado agrupar el P. Manuel Ortega. Toda esa experiencia en cuanto al conocimiento de la lengua y costumbres guaraníes las aplicó con el tiempo, al fundar la reducción de San Ignacio Guazú (1609), cuando ya estaba creada la Provincia Jesuítica del Paraguay. Destacó a su vez en otras actividades, siendo rector del colegio de Asunción y del Colegio Máximo de San Ignacio en Córdoba.

En este artículo se estudian los libros conservados en la reducción jesuítica de Candelaria, cabecera de las misiones de guaraníes. Para esto, se utiliza el inventario elaborado después de la expulsión de los jesuitas de territorios hispánicos (1767). En una primera fase del estudio, se procesa cuantitativamente la información contenida en la misma, para lo cual se exhiben gráficos sobre la pertenencia institucional y año de muerte de los autores presentes en la biblioteca y aposentos de la reducción y el formato y temática de los libros. A continuación, se complementa la aproximación cuantitativa con un análisis cualitativo. Para esto, se analiza la organización de los libros y del inventario en tanto expresión de una concepción del saber. Y, después, se focaliza en los saberes misionales o saberes de la conversión, es decir, aquellos conocimientos directamente relacionados con el contexto y la práctica misionales. Se incluye, aquí, a los saberes científicos, lingüísticos y teológico–morales. Finalmente, se realiza una breve conclusión en la que se enumeran pasos a seguir para profundizar en una historia de la lectura en las reducciones jesuíticas.

This article aims to examine the list of books held in the Jesuit reduction of Candelaria, administrative centre of the Guarani missions. The inventory prepared after the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Hispanic territories (1767) is used for this purpose. In the first part of the text, the information extracted from this source will be processed quantitatively; graphs showing the institutional belonging, year of death of the authors — both from the library and the Jesuits’ private chambers — as well as the format and subject of the books, are displayed. The quantitative approach is then complemented with a qualitative analysis. For this purpose, the classification of the books and the organization of the inventory are examined as expressions of a particular conception of knowledge. After that, the focus turns to missionary knowledge or knowledge of conversion, i. e., knowledge directly related to the missionary context and practice. The scientific, linguistic and moral–theological knowledge are included here. Finally, a brief conclusion is formulated, describing how to proceed in order to delve deeper into a history of reading in the Jesuit reductions.

The present study delves into the significance of missionary entradas within the Maynas region in relation to the diverse ethnic groups involved. The Maynas missions were established amidst the indigenous populations dwelling in the western fringes of the Amazonian region, particularly in the valleys of the Marañón, Napo, and Amazon rivers. Active in the region between 1638 and 1767, the Company of Jesus resorted to military expeditions known as "missionary entradas" to draw the Indians from the vicinity to dwell on reductions, either through force or persuasion. While this approach was a common practice in other areas of Jesuit activity, it gained unprecedented frequency in Maynas, with successive entradas aiming to expand and consolidate the territorial domain of the missionaries and fulfill the demands of indigenous groups in the face of increased interethnic rivalry. However, as the present work endeavors to demonstrate, the indigenous reality overshadowed the designs of the missionaries. The repeated entradas endeavored to accommodate groups that were not amenable to living together, leading to an excess in the number of reductions beyond the capacity of the Jesuits to attend to them. This recurrent process ultimately necessitated further missionary entradas to restore balance and homogeneity within the province. = This article was originally written in Spanish. In 1690, an allegorical image of Joseph Mulder published in Seville exalts Queen Mariana of Austria as a protector of Christianity in Mariana Islands. In the Pacific archipelago, the Society of Jesus, supported directly by the ex-regent, and in parallel with the difficult pacification of the territory, carried out an arduous work of evangelization of the indigenous people in which, from the imperial Catholic perspectives, the continuous martyrdoms unfold ideologically as titles of legitimation. Through an iconographic repertoire, it is emphasized how the ideological tonic of torture in the Marianas is not an exception in the apostolic panorama of the Indies, because an evident interference of the religious branch in the political management of the occupation is revealed. However, the missionary intervention is extremely weak in the modalities of penetration of the Catholic message and in the relationship between the preachers and the evangelized.

El P. Antonio Bustillo no fue ni es, un jesuita muy conocido, pues no tuvo demasiada participación en la Provincia Jesuítica del Paraguay. Apenas llegó, concluyó sus estudios en Córdoba y recién se le asignó una ocupación a fines de 1764. Su destino fueron las misiones del Chaco, interiorizándose de aquellas etnias y en donde permaneció escasos dos años y medio. Suficientes, no solo para aprender la difícil lengua mocoví (moqoit), sino también para cofundar el pueblo de San Pedro, bajo el ala del P. Florián Paucke, justamente uno de los más famosos jesuitas de la historia de la provincia. El texto que aquí presentamos, no tuvo como fin ser publicado, sino que fue parte de los recolectados por el P. Lorenzo Casado para nutrir la obra que el P. Pedro de Calatayud pretendía escribir sobre la historia del Paraguay.

Con la relación inédita sobre el viaje de los novicios expulsos del Padre Miranda, la biografía también inédita del novicio Baigorrí del Padre Juárez, ambas ubicadas en el Archivo de Loyola, y de una serie de documentos complementarios, seguimos el derrotero de once jóvenes que no llegaron a tener la oportunidad de incorporarse a las memorables hazañas de los jesuitas del Paraguay. Su largo peregrinar comenzado con la expulsión y que se prolongó por 21 meses, despertó la compasión general de todas las poblaciones por las que pasaron. Vicisitudes que son testimonio de tiempos difíciles para la Compañía de Jesús en una región indudablemente emblemática.

In this article, an analysis is conducted on the depictions of the devil found in the written works of missionaries who worked in the Spanish Amazon during the 17th and 18th centuries. The European missionaries, notably the Jesuits, wove their "spiritual conquest" of the Amazonian territories into a narrative of the battle between good and evil. They presented themselves as liberators who came to free the Indians from the chains of devil worship, which was perpetuated by the shaman's manipulation to cause conflicts and destruction, and inspired celebrations and sacraments that mimicked Christian practices but ultimately reinforced the natives' subservience to the common enemy. This text delves into the various aspects of this narrative in great detail. In contrast to what some studies suggest, demonization was not merely a means of discrediting indigenous cultures. The Jesuits deemed as demonic those practices they endeavored to comprehend, but whose immediate significance eluded them. Hence, the demon image acted as a bridge between cultures, making the native culture comprehensible. Demonization was not tantamount to rejecting the Other altogether; rather, it was an effort to create analogical links that allowed for intercultural communication and negotiation of the sacred universe. = This article was originally published in Portuguese. This article delves into the various manners in which the Christian doctrine was adopted by the reduced Indigenous populations inhabiting the Jesuit missions of Maynas. Originating in 1638 within the Marañón, Napo, and Amazon river valleys, these missions showcase a tenacity of indigenous customs and way of thinking, which have played an essential role in the assimilation of Christianity. Through this piece, I aim to elucidate the endurance and redefinition of Native traditions, as well as the intricate mechanisms involved in translating the Christian doctrine from one cultural milieu to another. It is my contention that the assimilation of Christianity was significantly influenced by the Indigenous practices and beliefs that acted as a conduit for this cultural transposition. = This article was originally written in Spanish. This article draws on two historical examples to argue for the importance of listening to and learning from the other in missionary encounter. It makes use of accounts of Jesuit missions in Latin America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and of the mission of the Moravian Brethren in North America in the mid-eighteenth century to show how two disparate Christian traditions nevertheless sought in remarkably similar ways to attend to the experiences of the Native American peoples with whom they worked.

José Cardiel (1704-1782) wrote different books about Jesuit missions of the Province of Paraguay between 1747 and 1780. All of them are rewritings based on the same text. Therefore, we can use those texts to analyze alterations, eliminations and additions —i.e., corrections and rewritings— between them. Thus, we identify the changes in the politics of Jesuit writing in the last decades before the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Hispanic territories (1767-1768) and the first years after that fact, i.e., probably the most critical period for Jesuits during the Early Modern Times.

José Cardiel (1704-1782) escribió, entre 1747 y 1780, distintos libros sobre las misiones jesuíticas de la Provincia del Paraguay. Todos ellos constituyen reescrituras de un mismo texto de base. Por esa razón, podemos utilizarlos para analizar las modificaciones, supresiones y adiciones —es decir, las correcciones y reescrituras— entre los mismos. De esa manera, identificamos los cambios en la política de escritura jesuítica en las últimas décadas antes de la expulsión de la Compañía de Jesús de los territorios de la Corona española (1767-1768) y en las primeras después de tal hecho, esto es, en el período probablemente más crítico para los jesuitas durante la Edad Moderna.

Como venimos publicando hasta el momento, el documento que presentamos en esta oportunidad, es uno de los 12 conocidos e inéditos, que presentaron diversos jesuitas de la provincia del Paraguay al P. Pedro Calatayud para facilitarle la tarea en la composición de una historia del Paraguay, de la que solo pudo esbozar un borrador. En este caso en particular es un texto, como el título lo indica, de un colegio que tuvo especial gravitación en la creación y desarrollo de las misiones de chiriguanos y especialmente de chiquitos, esa gran esperanza misional que significó para los jesuitas de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII.

The article deals with the transfer of cultural material fom Europe to America by the jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries. On the basis of the study of documents from the Archivo de Indias in Seville, orders and purchase receipts kept in the Archivo General de la Nación in Buenos Aires and Jesuit correspondence bequeathed to the National Historical Archive in Madrid, the type of artwork sent to the New World will be elucidated, with special attention to the commissions and sometimes difficult productions of the works. The complex arrangements for their packaging and transport for the overseas Jesuit institutions will be dealt with in the same way.

El artículo trata sobre la transferencia de cultura material por los jesuitas desde Europa a América en los siglos XVII y XVIII. Sobre la base del estudio de hojas de registro del Archivo de Indias de Sevilla, encargos y comprobantes de compras conservados en el Archivo General de la Nación de Buenos Aires y la correspondencia jesuítica legada en el Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid se elucidará el tipo de obras de arte enviado al Nuevo Mundo. Especial atención tendrán los encargos y las, en ocasiones, dificultosas producciones de las obras. De la misma forma se tratarán las modalidades complejas del embalaje y transporte de ellas para las instituciones jesuitas de ultramar.

No se ha insistido de manera suficiente sobre el hecho de que la Compañía de Jesús identificándose como misionera, no contaba en los inicios de su expansión por el mundo con religiosos formados específicamente para las misiones; dicho de otra manera, los jesuitas aprendieron las estrategias misioneras sobre el terreno. En el Perú y Latinoamérica tuvieron que pasar por un tiempo de ensayos y errores hasta conocer el territorio adecuadamente y ejecutar de manera más eficiente su propuesta apostólica. En ese proceso, se encontraron con las dificultades inherentes a un terreno muy distinto del que ellos conocían en Europa: el territorio marcado de manera longitudinal por la cordillera de los Andes, hacía muy difícil los desplazamientos deseados por la institución, llamados misiones volantes o temporales. Esto conllevó de igual manera, a que durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y en los inicios del siglo XVII fuesen adaptando su modo de ser religioso a la geografía, en estrecha interacción con las culturas locales. No debe extrañar si planteamos que los rasgos propios de la identidad espiritual jesuita se vieron confrontados por la novedad de un nuevo territorio y una nueva cultura que les condujo a ir replanteando su modo de proceder apostólico. La gran necesidad de mano de obra pastoral para dedicarse a la población indígena les hizo reflexionar sobre su manera de concebir la misión. El primero en haberlo hecho de modo sistemático fue José de Acosta, en De procuranda Indorum Salute. Para entender mejor este proceso, es importante tomar en cuenta, cómo se fue adecuando en el Perú la comprensión institucional de su misión en relación con la dedicación hacia las poblaciones originarias. Esto nos conduce a su vez a una tercera variable que a veces se suele dejar de lado: la repercusión de este proceso en la experiencia espiritual de los misioneros. De qué manera el llamado a las misiones entre indígenas, así como la relación establecida con ellos, influyeron en el modo en que los jesuitas vivían su espiritualidad, en un proceso de constante relectura de sus fuentes institucionales. Mi intención es mostrar que las acciones en un contexto cultural determinado, inducen a los jesuitas a reflexionar sobre sus propias agencias, llevándoles a elaborar una narrativa (discursiva e iconográfica en el caso de este artículo), en la que se manifiesta su autopercepción institucional y por ende, espiritual, al tratarse de una orden religiosa. No son pocos los testimonios de los 2 misioneros respecto de su práctica espiritual; si bien es cierto que las cartas anuas están llenas 3 de referencias a los frutos espirituales con el fin de una "edificación" de sus auditores o lectores, no por ello dejan de transmitir el testimonio de la subjetividad de los narradores, sobre todo si seguimos su pista desde una perspectiva de larga duración. El dilema de la misión entre indígenas fue penetrando el modus operandi de la institución y debió incidir en la experiencia espiritual de los misioneros, a la par que se elaboraba una suerte de "propaganda pro-indígena fidei" al interior de la institución en el Perú, que mostraremos en algunas pinceladas, desde el El presente artículo forma parte de una investigación más extensa en torno a la identidad jesuita en la misión 1 peruana: "Haciéndose indio viejo con el indio : definiendo la Misión jesuita en el Perú (1568-1600)" En: J. La mayoría de los estudios sobre la literatura jesuita en la región del Plata hasta ahora se centraron en un número muy pequeño de textos  considerados los  más importantes, como por ejemplo Ruiz de Montoya y Pablo Restivo, o la traducción de Nieremberg en Guaraní. En nuestra contribución, trataremos de tener en cuenta los textos menos conocidos y su uso didáctico. Después de establecer la tradición del diálogo
didáctico en la historia de la literatura, mostraremos que los textos como Sermones y Explicación de Yapuguay, y algunos manuscritos devocionales no publicados, estaban estrechamente  relacionados  con  el  uso  en  las  cofradías  de  trabajo  social  y  educación religiosa entre los guaraní. Algunos de estos textos obviamente tienen una doble función: fueron utilizados para la devoción personal de los guaranís o para oraciones conjuntas en reuniones de cofradías, pero  al  mismo  tiempo  ayudaron  a  los  mismos  jesuitas  a  mejorar  sus  conocimientos,
proporcionando  textos  en  una  versión  actualizada  de  guaraní  como  el  hablado  en  las reducciones.

Most studies about the Jesuit literature in the La Plata region up to now focused on a very small number of texts considered the most important ones, as for instance Ruiz de Montoya and Pablo Restivo, or the translation of Nieremberg in Guarani. In our contribution, we will try to take into account lesser-known texts and their didactical use.                                             

After establishing the tradition  of the didactical  dialogue in  literature  history  we will show that texts as the Sermones and Explicación by Yapuguay and some unpublished devotional manuscripts were closely linked to the use in the cofradías in charge of social work and religious education among the Guarani-indians.  Some of these texts obviously have a double function: they were used for the Guaranis’ personal devotion or joint prayers in cofradias’ meetings but at the same time helped the Jesuits themselves to improve their knowledge providing texts in an actualized version of Guarani as the one spoken in the reducciones.

This fascinating paper was actually rejected by the Illinois State University Teaching and Learning Symposium, 2014 even though it is a sequel to my sociologically prophetic 2013 submission below which they accepted on the Guarani, and even though it breaks new ground in terms of teaching and learning about the historical roots of globalization fueled by the great Paraguayan herb, yerba mate.  The true research question is, why?

The early modern Society of Jesus was the first global religious order. This chapter analyses the theory and practice of the Jesuits’ missions to non-Christians as these were understood by Ignatius of Loyola (the founder of the Society) and developed by his successors. It focuses on the work of prominent Jesuit missionaries whose pastoral strategies were considered models within the Society. The chapter underscores the Jesuits’ commitment to the accommodation of non-Christian traditions; Jesuit contributions to science, comparative religion, and other fields; conflicts between Jesuits and European officials and settlers, especially in the Iberian world; and divisions within the Society concerning mission work. The chapter concludes with reflections on the relationship between evangelization and theology and on directions for future research on Jesuit missions in their global context.

This paper examines the scholarly and political work of Kluge Prize winner and former president of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso; and his Minister of Culture, Francisco Weffort with prophetic historical significance given the unprecedented historical changes that occurred between Buenos Aries and Rome in March of 2013. 

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Ex-Brazilian president, father of dependency theory, and international entrepreneurship scholar Fernando Henrique Cardoso was recently awarded the John W. Kluge Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Study of Humanity. Cardoso’s research on industrial entrepreneurship and economic development in Brazil was articulated in 19th century historical terms that were based on his study of slavery and race relations in Rio Grande do Sul. Cardoso’s findings and conclusions obscure those of his minister of culture, Francisco Weffort, who traces the origins of economic development in Brazil back to a utopianism that was brought to Rio Grande do Sul in the Rio de la Plata Basin by Jesuit missionaries beginning in the 16th century. In methodological terms, this study is a descriptive, ethnographic account of the form of industrial entrepreneurship
and economic development that took place in the New World at the beginning of the early-modern era. It offers a living research model for humanity that combines true history with experiential learning into a dynamic opportunity that is vital not only for students, but all citizens of the world and the nations they hail from.

En este artículo hacemos un intento de identificar elementos lingüísticos que han sido objetos de transmisión horizontal en la Chiquitanía, una región históricamente multiétnica ubicada en el Oriente boliviano. En particular, examinamos el léxico de origen chiquitano (familia macro-ye) que se utiliza en el dialecto camba del castellano, a fin de detectar peculiaridades fonológicas que podrían caracterizar la variedad lingüística donadora de ese léxico. Demostramos que se trata de una variedad extinta que no puede descender directamente del proto-chiquitano (según lo que se puede reconstruir a partir de las variedades documentadas del chiquitano), sino que comparte con éste un ancestral común más antiguo. Hipotetizamos que el contacto que llevó a la incorporación del léxico chiquitano en la variedad regional del castellano ocurrió en Santa Cruz la Vieja e identificamos la fuente del léxico de sustrato con el dialecto histórico piñoco de la lengua chiquitana.

Angesichts  seiner  überragenden  Bedeutung  für  die  Wissenschaftsge-
schichte Südamerikas im 18. Jahrhundert und insbesondere für die Ge-
schichte,  Naturkunde  und  Landwirtschaft  der  so  genannten  Jesuitenreduktionen  des  La-Plata-Raums  und  benachbarter  Gebiete  ist  es  unverständlich, dass sich bisher niemand dem Werk des Jesuiten Sánchez Labrador als Gesamtheit gewidmet hat. Zu breit war das von ihm behandelte Themenspektrum, als dass es außer bei Fachwissenschaftlern der jeweiligen Gebiete weitergehendes Interesse fand. Einige thematische Teilausgaben seines nur als Manuskript verfügbaren Werks liegen zwar seit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im Druck vor, es fehlt aber eine Gesamtausgabe des im Manuskript über 3500 seitigen Werks. Der Verbleib eines Drittels der Manuskripte war bis zu den Recherchen des Verfassers noch nicht geklärt. Wir präsentieren hier nach einer kurzen Vorstellung des Autors die Ergebnisse der Rekonstruktion dieses zentralen Quellenwerks zur Region.

"A carefully edited collection of 14 recent studies on archaeological GIS applications from contributors in Argentina, Brazil and Chile in South America. The subjects covered include predictive modeling and analysis of site location and distribution, settlement patterns, lithic raw material availability, regional archaeological visibility, intrasite material distributions and zooarchaeological collections as well as heritage management and risk assessment. Entre los jesuitas del Gran Chaco. Compilación de Joaquín Camaño S. J. y otras fuentes documentales del S. XVIII , whose authorship is an edition prepared by: Ernesto Maeder (†), María Laura Salinas, Julio Folkenand and José Braunstein, printed by the Buenos Aires Academy of Sciences, consisting 624 pages including annexes and maps, was published in 2018. Anyone could suspect that it is a transcription of sources, annotation and critical studies, but it is not only that. It is a continuum of scientific tradition that questions what the expelled jesuit, born in La Rioja, called Joaquín Camaño y Bazán SJ († 1820) wrote, in addition to what Guillermo Furlong Cardiff SJ († 1974) disseminated, which is reaffirmed in the production of Dr. Ernesto Maeder († 1820). All of the aforementioned committed to a collective construction of knowledge about peoples, their languages, their histories, georeferenced in this part of Latin America that lies between the southern Amazon and northern southern Patagonia. In synthesis, it is a book of sources of the “Missions” of the Gran Chaco and the most finished and erudite scientific commentaries presented for both, specialist readers, and those who incursion in the historization of the knowledge community.

Pouco se escreveu sobre a relação entre Inácio de Loiola e a música. Este silêncio contrasta com a presença significativa da música no projeto educativo e apostólico da Companhia de Jesus. O presente artigo procura considerar uma referência musical de Inácio de Loiola ('loquela'), revisitando o seu sentido como chave de leitura para o papel da música no projeto educativo e apostólico dos Jesuítas. Na segunda parte, o artigo leva-nos a considerar a realidade atual à luz do anteriormente dito. O desencanto que os recentes abalos da história têm trazido sobre a humanidade deve ser transformado pela recuperação de um sentido musical do mundo, uma musicalidade que supera qualquer forma de proselitismo ou razão instrumental, a fim de formar um novo tipo de humanidade.
