Prediction of horizontal pressure drop in dilute phase pneumatic conveying or slurry transport is among the fundamental issues of designing these systems. In this work a thorough literature survey demonstrates that there is no consensus on an integrative solution for conveying pressure drop, therefore a large data base of conveying systems' operating points at dilute phase is established and analyzed. It includes measurements taken at our 52 mm bore laboratory pneumatic conveying line, as well as thousands of data points collected from the literature. Two modelling approaches are attempted – the first is frictional representation based on dimensional analysis, which presents linear dependency between the pressure drop and the superficial fluid velocity normalized by the minimum pressure velocity of the transport curve. It had also been found that the pressure drop increase rate has a strong dependency on the Archimedes number. The second approach is an energy balance between the power of the drag force applied to the particles and the additional power required to drive the fluid due to particle presence. Unlike the common expressions, a modification to the drag coefficient is suggested, which takes into account pipe turbulence and particle acceleration. The two presented models do not require pilot plant calibration, and an applicability of one of them to slurry transport is demonstrated. Some future research routes are offered.

A case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in a 50-year-old man is reported. The lesion was located in the supraglottic region and grossly presented a characteristic finger-like pattern of growth. The tumour pursued an indolent clinical course, and the patient is well and free of disease after 47 months of follow-up. The present paper recapitulates the macro- and microscopic features of this rare neoplasm and stresses its differential diagnosis with other exophytic squamous cell carcinomas of the region.

Substantial numbers of patients with posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (p-BPPV) have signs of utricular dysfunction at baseline. This improves after performing the canalith repositioning procedure. To evaluate the changes of subjective visual horizontal (SVH) in patients with p-BPPV before and after treatment with the canalith repositioning procedure. Twenty-six patients with p-BPPV were treated with the canalith repositioning procedure, Epley's maneuver, according to the affected side. Baseline SVH measurements were taken before performing the Dix-Hallpike maneuver and Epley's maneuver, for comparison with measurements taken just after Epley's maneuver, and 2 weeks after Epley's maneuver. Among 26 patients with p-BPPV, 11 (42%) showed abnormal deviation of SVH at baseline. Just after performing Epley's maneuver, the number of patients who showed an abnormal deviation of SVH decreased significantly to 15% (4 of 26 patients; p < 0.05). Two weeks after performing Epley's maneuver, only two patients (8%) showed an abnormal deviation of SVH (p < 0.001).

Spray booms are weakly damped flexible structures. Tractor vibrations induce horizontal boom deformations which are one of the main causes of an uneven spray deposition. Since structural adaptations to suppress boom vibration present problems, the feasibility of an active vibration compensator was investigated in laboratory tests. The experimental structure consisted of a flexible hollow beam with properties representative of common small spray booms, and a cradle on which the beam was clamped. In the experiments, longitudinal tractor vibrations were imposed upon the cradle and flexible deformations of the beam, induced by cradle accelerations, were compensated by an electro-hydraulic control system. The linear quadratic Gaussian method with loop transfer recovery, a robust control theory, was used to design the compensator. Measured amplitudes of the beam vibrations were reduced by a factor of more than thirty by the electro-hydraulic compensator.
