Gemeinschaft

In comedies, the idea of community is an indispensable staple – be it as an (implied) audience, as butt of the joke or as what Werner Röcke has termed Lachgemeinschaften (communities of laughter), i.e. groups of an unforeseeable and fluid nature that can renegotiate power relations and social order. Communities of laughter can arise spontaneously, yet they follow conventionalized practices and rely on shared codes. This has allowed for their integration into generic forms such as film comedies, where the idea of community has featured prominently ever since the success of postwar Ealing films (such as Passport to Pimlico): here, a tightly-knit group of amicable underdogs usually challenges a powerful institution, negotiating questions of Britishness in the process.
This article traces the heritage of this type of Lachgemeinschaft in contemporary British comedies and points to a two-fold development.
Whilst the mildly anarchic but ultimately conciliatory spirit of Ealing comedy survives in recent box-office hits like The Full Monty or Made in Dagenham, there are other developments which challenge the idea of a community based on principles of mutual solidarity. It is television in particular where the recent rise of “cringe comedies” (often darkly humorous narratives invoking feelings of discomfort and embarrassment) suggests a much bleaker outlook on social reality.
The article draws upon numerous examples both from films and influential cringe series such as The Office in order to interrogate this divide, to question the importance of media-related difference in generating communities of laughter, and to analyse the underlying concepts of Britishness that become visible in the process.

Foucaults spätes Interesse an der Herkunft der politischen Sorge um den Einzelnen (»omnes et singulatim«) und der damit verbundenen Form der »Regierung« im Unterschied zur souveränen Herrschaft führt ihn zurück in die Antike. Dort erkennt er den Ursprung dieses nicht-souveränen Gemeinschaftsverständnisses als Gegenentwurf zum griechischen Polis-Denken im frühen Christentum. Er analysiert sowohl das biblisch-christliche Verhältnis von Hirt und Herde als auch einige frühchristliche Bußpraktiken (exhomologese, exagoreusis als von-sich-selbst-Zeugnis-geben), deren performative Gesten der Offenlegung nicht nur die Frage des Subjekts aufwerfen (Wer bin ich eigentlich?, Selbstwahrnehmung als Grundlage von Subjektivität), sondern auch die Frage des Verhältnisses dieses Selbst zur Gemeinschaft. Foucault erkennt im sog, »Pastorat« des frühen Christentums (der Hirt, der sich um eine Gemeinschaft zu sorgen hat) eine nicht-souveräne Form von politischem Handeln. Diese fällt zwar im Zuge der späteren kirchlichen Praxis der Pastoralmacht wieder in eine souveräne Herrschaftsform zurück, das »Pastorat« bleibt aber zugleich das Kriterium, um diese Pastoralmacht von innen her kritisch zu entlarven und in Frage zu stellen. Foucaults späte Analysen legen damit einen Grundzug der politischen Kultur des Abendlandes offen, der stets - allerdings nur unterschwellig, in kritischen Praktiken eines Gegen-Verhaltens gegenüber souveräner Macht - wirksam war. Von diesen Beobachtungen her lassen sich die quasi-souveränen Herrschaftsformen der Pastoralmacht und der Biopolitik, die das gegenwärtige politische Handeln prägen, nicht nur wirksam dekonstruieren, sondern es wird auch ein Gegenmodell politischer Gemeinschaft denkbar, das es zu entfalten gälte.

Författaren och journalisten Göran Rosenberg satte för drygt ett decennium sedan fingret på något viktigt i den samtida rättighetsdiskussionen och pekade dessutom på det problematiska förhållandet mellan rättigheter och därtill svarande (eller: frånvarande) skyldigheter:

"Kring de nya rättigheterna har vuxit fram en veritabel rättighetsindustri med uppgift att organisera och företräda ständigt nya grupper av rättighetsbehöriga och rättighetsberövade. Däremot ingen märkbar rörelse för att stärka de förpliktelser som är förutsättningen för att rättigheterna respekteras. Rättighetskulturen frodas på pliktkulturens bekostnad."

Utan att ta ställning i sak om riktigheten i vissa av betraktelserna, så finns det flera omständigheter som jag vill ta fasta på i det följande. Samtidigt som exempelvis sociala rättigheter, med rätta, varit viktiga instrument för människors delaktighet och rättsligt stärkt utsatta personers positioner, så är rättigheter och skyldigheter långtifrån självklara juridiska begrepp som entydigt förmår fixera rättsliga relationer. Det finns därför alltid anledning att förstå dem i en vidare samhällelig kontext, i synnerhet som denna också förändras över tid. Frågan om rättigheter är förvisso en lika gammal som aktuell fråga, men diskussionen om rättigheter har, vågar jag påstå, fått en alltmer accentuerad roll och kommit att träda i förgrunden på senare tid, något som Rosenbergs citat indikerar. Det gäller den vid det här laget tämligen välbekanta diskussionen om kostnaderna av sociala rättigheter, men även den omvittnade 'rättighetsexplosion' som skett också inom andra rättsområden än det välfärdsrättsliga. Detta har å ena sidan samband med insikten om att förverkligandet av olika typer av sociala rättigheter måst ske med preciserade rättigheter, skyldigheter och sanktioner i relation till en förändrad välfärdsstat som inte längre per automatik tryggar dessa rättigheter. Å andra sidan har det samband med den allmänna idén om att grundrättigheter också gjort entré i den svenska rättsvetenskapen, vilket delvis är ett resultat av förändrade internationella och globala förhållanden samt Sveriges medlemskap i EU.' Rättigheter har kommit i fokus, på olika sätt och av olika skäl.

Denna text syftar till att teoretiskt diskutera vissa framträdande drag inom den senmodema välfärdsrätten, som berör den ökande rättighetsreglering vi bevittnat de senaste decennierna och den betydande roll själva rättighetsdiskursen fått inom samhället, politiken och, till viss del, inom juridiken. Min ambition är att närma mig vissa tendenser som jag finner problematiska, att försöka förstå själva den logik som obevekligen tycks driva dem framåt samt att dra fram vissa konsekvenser som jag finner oroande.

Arbetet är disponerat så att avsnitt 1 diagnosticerar några frågor om de sociala rättigheternas nuvarande predikament; avsnitt 2 tar upp vissa rättssociologiska aspekter på förrättsligande och elaborerar ett särskilt konkret uttryck för detta, nämligen det som jag vill benämna 'rättighetifiering', avsnitt 3 behandlar vissa tänk-bara anledningar till rättighetifieringen utifrån politisk teori. I avsnitt 4 närmar jag mig med ett sociologiskt synsätt vilka konsekvenser rättighetsdiskursen har inneburit eller kan komma att innebära-för den samhälleliga gemenskapens rätts-liga grunder. I avsnitt 5 lokaliserar jag de sociala rättigheterna i ett sammanhang som inbegriper civilsamhällets aktualitet och välfärdsstatens nya ansikte; i avsnitt 6 frågar jag mig så avslutningsvis vilken väg det sociala rättighetsbegreppet kan vandra framöver

Stadtentwicklung unterliegt einer fortlaufenden Diskussion – in der Fachwelt wie auch in der Öffentlichkeit. Gerade im Strukturwandel des Ruhrgebiets ist die Aushandlung darüber, was eine „gute“ Entwicklung der Städte sein könnte, seit mindestens 20 Jahren ein Dauerthema. Strukturwandel und gesellschaftlicher Wandel im Ruhrgebiet und in ganz Nordrhein-Westfalen wirken oftmals und vielerorts als radikaler Umbruch: Die räumlichen Strukturen einer auf fossilen Energien basierenden Industrie werden zu Gunsten von Kultur und Kunst, von Informationstechnologie und Logistik, von Forschung und Unternehmensgründung umgewidmet. Durch diese großen Umwälzungen der wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen vollzieht sich ebenfalls eine Prioritätenverschiebung in der Entwicklung der Städte. Prioritäten ändern sich und neue Ziele werden aufgestellt. Was „gute“ Stadtentwicklung für „die urbanisten“ heißt und wie diese heute ausgestaltet werden sollte, wird in diesem Diskussionsbeitrag erörtert.

Das Gegensatzpaar von "Gemeinschaft" und "Gesellschaft" ist nicht nur das Konstitutionsmoment der deutschen Soziologie und in der einen oder anderen Variante ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil jeder Sozialtheorie, sondern eignet sich auch zur theoretischen Freilegung der motivationspsychologischen und anthropologischen Voraussetzungen der entsprechenden Denker. In dieser Arbeit werden Ferdinand Tönnies, Max Weber und Helmuth Plessner, die wohl bekanntesten Theoretiker der "Gemeinschaft", auf ihre jeweiligen Motivationspsychologien untersucht, um von Ihnen aus eine neue Typologie der 'gemeinschaftlichen Verbindungen' aufzustellen. Ziel ist es dabei das normalerweise behauptete Ausschlussverhältnis  zwischen Tönnies' "Gemeinschaft", Webers "Vergemeinschaftung" und Plessners "Gemeinschaftsethos" auf seine Stichhalitgkeit zu überprüfen. Hierbei stellt sich heraus, dass alle drei Begrffe unterschiedliche Wirklichkeitsbereiche bezeichnen wollen und insofern sinnvoll nebeneinander verwendet werden können.

Es kommt darauf an, den Raum von seinen Rändern, seinen Unzulänglichkeiten, seinen Auslassungen zu denken: von hier aus wird er exzessiv, also nicht mehr begrenzbar, öffnet er sich dem, was Grosz seine Zukünftigkeit (Futurity) nennt. In diesem ‚Mehr‘ des Raums, kündigt sich seine Zeitlichkeit, kündigt sich der Raum der Relationen an. Und das Denken eines Raums, der sich selbst überbordet, ruft die Frage des Gemeinschaftlichen auf: Raum ist sozial, aber erst einmal nicht im Sinne der sozialen Positionen, nicht im Sinne einer gemeinschaftlichen Identität, sondern im Sinne eines Sozialen, das die Eindeutigkeit jeder Lokalisierung und Bestimmung erschüttert, einer Gemeinschaft der Superpositionierung und Nichtlokalisierbarkeit.

Levinas' Übergang von der Rede vom Anderen als »Exteriorität« in »Totalité e Infini« (1961) hin zum »Anderen-im-Selben« in »Autrement qu'être« (1974) hatte es notwendig gemacht auch den Begriff des »Menschen« neu zu fassen. Dies geschieht im Kontext der Rede vom »Dritten« als Alterität-im-Plural. Der Artikel zeichnet zunächst diese Entwicklung nach, konzentriert sich dann aber vor allem auf die Konsequenzen des Levinas'schen Alteritätsdenkens für eine angemessene Rede vom »Menschen« sowie die Bestimmung von Leiblichkeit sowie von Singularität und Verantwortung. Vor diesem Hintergrund eröffnet sich ein neuer Horizont für ein alteritätssensibles Verständnis von Gemeinschaft.

Ferdinand Tönnies'in 1887'de yayınlandığı günden itibaren büyük ilgi gören eseri "Cemaat ve Cemiyet", birliktelik duygularının temel teşkil ettiği cemaatlerin “topluluk” ruhuyla, bireysel yaşamların belirleyici olduğu cemiyet yaşamını, yani modern “toplum”u karşılaştırmalı bir yaklaşımla ele alıyor. Kitap boyunca Tönnies bir yandan ele aldığı karşıtlıkların teorisini geliştirirken, bir yandan da doğal irade ile insan iradesi arasında bir denklem kuruyor. Kırsal-kentsel mekânlarda, geleneksel-modern yaşam formlarında, duygusal-rasyonel ilişkiler ekseninde, insanların davranışlarına hangi unsurların yön verdiğini açıklayan "Cemaat ve Cemiyet", sadece Tönnies’in düşünce dünyasını değil, onu takip eden Alman sosyoloji geleneğini de anlamak için çok önemli bir kaynak. Okurlar kapitalizm, bireyselcilik ve kent sosyolojisi gibi alanların, Weber, Sombart ve Simmel gibi düşünürlerin fikrî tohumlarını "Cemaat ve Cemiyet"te bulacak…

A sociological analysis of the work An tOileánach / The Islandman.  My main emphasis is on the Gemeinschaft / community as portrayed by Tomás Ó Criomhthain. I draw on the sociological theory of Ferdinand Tonnies. Published in Béascna 2017 (UCC journal).

Is it possible to determine the Facebook Gemeinschaft or the living law of the global file-sharing community? What are the social facts of twitter or the intuitive law of Chinese microbloggers? This paper argues that digitisation of society, the reliance on digital networks, protocol, algorithms and completely new sets of organisational structures for social communities, have vast implications for core interests within socio-legal research. This, I argue, should therefore be seen as potential for a possible revival of socio-legal classical theorists, following from the fact that several of them struggled to grasp the role of law and norms in a society that in many cases were also in a technology-related metamorphosis. This relates to norm pluralism, or possibly an anomic state in which norms fail to describe reality as it is perceived. For example, copyright law does not describe the reality of distribution and reproduction of cultural content as conceptualised by the younger generation, which leads to its decreased legitimacy in society. However, here I suggest two complementary traits. First, the study of how we conceptualise law in relation to reality, I argue, could benefit from using findings in cognitive theory relating to conceptual metaphor theory. Language and legal language are expanding and are renegotiated in relation to the massive need to conceptualise digital phenomena. Secondly, I argue that the inherent preconditions in the technologies themselves are of particular socio-legal relevance. This means that the regulating aspects of (programming) code deserve extra attention when studying the socio-legal aspects of a digital society.

Este texto narra, en clave autobiográfica, la relación existente entre mi vida, experiencia y trabajo como sociólogo y unas de mis inquietudes teóricas prioritarias: el concepto de "comunidad". En este ejercicio, describo cómo dicho concepto y yo hemos ido relacionándonos con distintas realidades intelectuales, principalmente, la Sozialtheorie alemana, la teoría anglofoucaultiana y la discusión sociológica latinoamericana. También recupero algunas derivas más recientes, de orden epistemológico, que dicho trabajo ha asumido, y que se relacionan fundamentalmente con el problema de la embeddedness cultural de los conceptos sociológicos. Finalmente, articulo todo este recorrido con el cultivo de una "moral de la incomodidad", que para mí significa un desafío intelectual y vital a la vez.

This paper analyzes dead-end streets in the context of main arguments of the sociology of space. The study aims to examine how sociality constructs and transforms space in conjunction with continuity-temporality dimension, on the contrary in what ways space influences social life and which changes arise in actions of individuals within the context of dead-end streets. It is conducted on residents in 18 dead-end streets at İstanbul/Fatih and 32 residents consisting of 19 women 13 men are interviewed within the study. The paper is indicated that residents experience some changes regarding spatial perceptions and the process of spatial integration as well as spatial and social dynamics also needs to be analyzed in conjunction with spatial continuity. It is discussed that spatial continuity affects gemeinschaft relationships among residents, as a social indicator space hosts different practices with permanence and temporality conditions.

In questo paper viene descritta brevemente la letteratura che ha preso in analisi il legame sociale. Vengono inoltre anticipate alcune delle criticità circa le nuove interpretazioni alla luce dei movimenti neo-comunitaristi, cercando di contestualizzare meglio la dicotomia comunità-società, cara alla tradizione filosofica tedesca.

Im Anschluss an die Frage nach Wiederkehr oder Verschwinden des Regionalen erörtert der Text das Verhältnis Regionalität und Modernisierung. Er erörtert Entfremdungsunterstellung und Verlustdiskurs und fragt nach der Substanz von Vergemeinschaftungsdiskursen. Angesichts erlebnisästhetischer Konjunktur des Regionalen wird von der Kulturwissenschaft gefordert, sich weder Modernisierungen im Umgang mit Regionalität grundsätzlich entgegenzustellen noch das Potenzial der Kulturkritik völlig über Bord zu werfen.

The modern economy is the cognitive network which is the product of certain way of organizing information, exchange and ways of knowing. British colonial state introduced the meaning of modern economy to India, though colonial management of the economy aimed to exploit India’s population, land and resources to benefit British national economic interest. Production of the modern economy was accomplished through the tools of standardization and jurisdiction that served the colonial state to measure and mobilize the population, resources and land to maximize profit accumulation for British economy. India’s modern economic exchange is still “embedded” and immersed in social relations and contradicts Polanyi’s account of modern economy. Modernization theory assumes the transition from premodern and traditional gemeinshaft (community) to advanced and modern gessellshaft (market society) (R. Birla 95). Indian economy is an exception from such dichotomy, it combines the elements of both “traditional” and “modern”. India’s economic ethos is characterized by the notion of gemeinshaft, which represents personal social interactions and communal values that stem from those interactions. Gessellshaft , as a product of modern economy introduced by the colonial state, is described by indirect interactions, impersonal and formal modern values.

Heidegger’s “abode” and the architectural theorist Christian Norberg-Schulz’s related conception “existential space” are not intrinsically political forms but do have sociological and political ramifications. “Abode”, whatever the extent to which it relates to Ferdinand Tonnies’ “Gemeinschaft”, points in one political direction only: to a valorisation of the “integrated”, “whole”, “organic” community whose chief exponents in the 1930s were the anti-modernist wing of the National Socialist Germans Workers’ Party. Without taking up the specific issue of Heidegger’s Nazism, what are the most general political terms for an aesthetic focused on the primacy of Being, and what general political formulation is adequate to differentiate and specify such a “politics of Being” in respect to politics of any other sort?

This dissertation offers an interdisciplinary approach to studying the interplay between human ecological variables and motivational preferences that shape all human action and interaction, and, in the aggregate, socio-cultural formations. While the capacity for conscious reflection on value priorities is universal, much human behavior occurs unreflexively, the result of socialization and habit formation. Furthermore, values regulate all social relations, in that social life would not be possible without (explicit or implicit) reference to them. Values also inform ideal (‘good life’) constructs that people aspire to realize, including preferred ways for achieving this. It is surprising, then, that no ‘Archaeology of Values’ has so far been formulated. To be sure, archaeologists do deal with values, but mostly indirectly and implicitly. Whenever they note socio-cultural variability, whenever they talk about socio-cultural change in terms of complexification, differentiation, or individualization, they are in fact talking about shifts in value emphases, or how past peoples chose to realize similar values in different ways. Yet, such efforts rarely involve close engagement with value concepts themselves, their motivational content (e.g. bravery or generosity), relational dynamics (compatible or conflictual), or socio-historical significance (in terms of adaptive efficacy and developmental impact).   

In taking a value-centric approach to archaeological inquiry, I seek to understand the value-driven behaviors that manifest in particular human ecologies, to comprehend why certain values are consistently prioritized over others under certain socio-historical conditions, and how this manifests at the level of lived experience for groups and individuals. If some values can be shown to have universal valence, can the same be said about the particular ways in which people choose to realize them? If societies are formed through the numerous actions and interactions of individuals, if cultural constructs are constituted in the context of social life, how do society and culture link to individually experienced and conceptualized motivational values? How can we move beyond interpretations that remain too strongly focused on ‘Ideology’ (i.e. elite domination and mystification) and ‘Identity’ and instead examine how new and existing constraints and affordances were negotiated by local agents with diverging interests, outlooks, and levels of empowerment? How might we replace frameworks that contrast simple-complex, egalitarian-stratified, colonizer-colonized, or elite-subordinate with one that recognizes that people are variably motivated to engage in complex and dynamic social relations at various levels of lived experience? This aim to formulate an ‘Archaeology of Values’ has encouraged taking an interdisciplinary approach, most notably by using methods and theories developed in Social Psychology and Developmental Psychology. Reference to globalization ethnographies further substantiates the theoretical-methodological framework while guiding data analysis and interpretation.   

In the study area of this dissertation, archaeological research has adequately shown how important socio-historical transformations occurred during the Iron Age and Roman period. Yet, the closest that prehistorians and Romanists have come to explicitly engage values is in studies of ritual and religion, or when values feature implicitly in developmental narratives that describe how societies become more complex (e.g. Iron Age complexification) or culturally different (e.g. Roman period acculturation). This is typically done by making reference to phenomena like social stratification or political centralization, processes implicitly understood to have involved important shifts in value systems. This dissertation contributes to this field of archaeological scholarship by assessing the material record through multi-thread, multi-scalar, and comparative analyses. Doing so allows demonstrating how Iron Age ‘complexification’ and Roman period ‘acculturation’ processes changed how people prioritized and realized a limited range of basic human values, and how this reshaped social norms and cultural ideals.

Soziale Medien wie Facebook sind gegenwärtig ein beliebter Gegenstand kulturpessimistischer Zeitdiagnosen. In diesen Diagnosen erscheinen Soziale Netzwerke als virtuelle Welten, in denen eine Kultur der Oberflächlichkeit, der Inszenierung und der Schein-Gemeinschaft institutionalisiert wird. Doch kulturpessimistische Beobachtungen sozialer Netzwerke überhöhen die soziale Form der Gemeinschaft, sie überzeichnen den Trend einer zunehmenden Virtualität des Lebens und sie übersehen die zunehmende Verwobenheit von Netz und Wirklichkeit. Tatsächlich lassen soziale Netzwerke den Konstruktionscharakter sozialer Beziehungen, der in traditionellen Formen des kommunikativen Miteinanders weitgehend verhüllt wird, eigentlich erst richtig zu Tage treten.

Poniendo el foco en el concepto sociológico de comunidad, en este trabajo serán explorados los perfiles de dos semánticas culturales 'centrales' (la alemana y la anglosajona), resaltando la importancia que tiene para el trabajo teórico de esta disciplina el análisis histórico de sus conceptos. Se caracterizarán someramente los atributos y las trayectorias de ambas semánticas, y se describirán algunas de sus recíprocas relaciones. Se anticiparán algunas líneas de trabajo (que aún se encuentra en una fase inicial) en torno a las semánticas sociológicas latinoamericanas de la comunidad, las cuales a su vez abrevaron en las otras dos mencionadas, entre otras fuentes. Finalmente, se resaltará la importancia que tiene el hecho de que las palabras de nuestro vocabulario sociológico no sean sólo eso, sino también componentes de una (más amplia y difusa) discursividad político-social.Poniendo el foco en el concepto sociológico de comunidad, en este trabajo serán explorados los perfiles de dos semánticas culturales 'centrales' (la alemana y la anglosajona), resaltando la importancia que tiene para el trabajo teórico de esta disciplina el análisis histórico de sus conceptos. Se caracterizarán someramente los atributos y las trayectorias de ambas semánticas, y se describirán algunas de sus recíprocas relaciones. Se anticiparán algunas líneas de trabajo (que aún se encuentra en una fase inicial) en torno a las semánticas sociológicas latinoamericanas de la comunidad, las cuales a su vez abrevaron en las otras dos mencionadas, entre otras fuentes. Finalmente, se resaltará la importancia que tiene el hecho de que las palabras de nuestro vocabulario sociológico no sean sólo eso, sino también componentes de una (más amplia y difusa) discursividad político-social.

Abstrak 'Urang' Panjalu di Bandung memang bukan satu-satunya kelompok urbanisan yang membentuk komunitas bisnis di sentra-sentra industri di wilayah Bandung. Nilai-nilai kekerabatan yang erat serta keterkaitan emosional dengan kampung halamannya telah menjadikan kelompok ini solid dan relatif bertahan di tengah-tengah situasi krisis ekonomi yang menimpa negeri ini. Kondisi ini disebabkan karena komunitas Panjalu di Bandung selalu berupaya untuk melakukan adaptasi dengan situasi baru yang dikenal dengan istilah equilibrium sosial dalam kelompok masyarakat yang menurut Ferdinand Tonnies berbentuk gemeinschaft. Di samping itu, kelompok ini menjadi sebuah entitas bisnis yang menjadi supply chain (rantai pemasok) terhadap industri-industri besar. Pasar Jatayu Bandung, sebagai sentra bisnis komunitas uban asal Panjalu, diakui sebagai Pasar Besi berskala nasional. Tidak kalah pentingnya, bisnis yang dianggap barang 'loakan' ini juga telah menghidupkan skala industri mikro (pemulung), juga UKM (Usaha Kecil Menengah), di samping dengan industri besar. Kata kunci : urbanisan, krisis ekonomi, equilibrium sosial, gemeinsschaft, supply chain. A. Latar Belakang Selain menjadi ibu kota Jawa Barat, Bandung merupakan salah satu 'tanah harapan' bagi para kaum pendatang. Oleh karena itu, sepanjang sejarahnya, kota Bandung banyak didatangi oleh para urbanisan (pendatang yang berasal dari satu propinsi) ataupun para migran (dari luar propinsi). Hal ini dimungkinkan mengingat unsur kota yang dimiliki Bandung, kerap dipandang sebagai sebuah kemajuan dan modernisasi seluruh aspek kehidupan. Di negara maju, pola migrasi biasanya sangat rumit (kompleks), dengan indikator adanya kesempatan ekonomi yang lebih seimbang

La pregunta por la comunidad es doblemente fundacional de la sociología. Es fundacional desde el punto de vista de la historia de nuestra disciplina, porque fue una de las problemáticas que acompañó su autonomización científica en el concierto de las ciencias de fines del siglo XIX. Pero también es fundacional desde el punto de vista de la teoría sociológica, ya que es un interrogante profundo y, a la vez, abierto. Es profundo porque alcanza el corazón mismo del problema de la complejidad del orden social, y es abierto porque está dotado con una heurística positiva, que lo mantiene actualizado, incluso hoy día en el contexto de la
sociedad mundial de comienzos del siglo XXI. El libro Comunidad: estudios de teoría sociológica constituye un destacado esfuerzo por sintetizar ambas fundaciones, y pone su esfuerzo en función de un objetivo sustantivo: determinar a la comunidad como objeto de teoría sociológica sistemática.

Das Ungewöhnliche, Verzerrte und Groteske übt einen Reiz aus, dem wir uns nicht leicht entziehen können. Exemplarisch zeigt sich die Faszination des unheimlichen Anderen in Tod Brownings 1932 fertiggestellten Schwarzweißfilm »Freaks«. In ihm scheint es nur so von ungewöhnlichen deformierten Leibern und Persönlichkeiten zu wimmeln.
Die eigentlich konventionell zu nennende Geschichte um Liebe, Betrug und Rache innerhalb einer Gemeinschaft von Zirkusdarstellern bezieht ihre Faszination aus der Besetzung der Rollen mit echten 'freaks' und dem Zusammenspiel der Charaktere ebenso wie aus der Kameraführung, dem Ton und dem die Narration immer wieder aufs Neue fragmentierenden Schnitt.
Was genau aber zeichnet nun diesen Film aus? Was lässt uns zwischen Schaulust und Angstlust der Geschichte folgen, gleichzeitig angezogen und abgestoßen?

The unusual, the distorted and the grotesque exert a charm that we cannot easily escape. The fascination with the uncanny other is exemplified in Tod Browning's black-and-white film "Freaks," completed in 1932. It seems to be teeming with unusual deformed bodies and personalities.
The story of love, deceit and revenge within a community of circus performers, which can actually be called conventional, draws its fascination from the casting of the roles with real 'freaks' and the interaction of the characters as well as from the camera work, the sound and the editing, which fragments the narration again and again.
But what exactly distinguishes this film? What makes us follow the story between curiosity and fear, simultaneously attracted and repelled?

¿Qué papel juega la comunidad a la que pertenecemos a la hora de fijar la autoridad normativa de nuestras acciones? Con ayuda de la filosofía de Wittgenstein, se trata de defender aquí que no es la comunidad propia la autoridad última en nuestros afanes normativos.
