Over Julius Spier, de leermeester en geliefde van Etty Hillesum, is vrij weinig bekend. Om inzage te krijgen in zijn leven is nagegaan welke boeken Iris-Verlag, gevestigd in Frankfurt am Main, tussen 1925-1929 heeft uitgegeven, de uitgeverij waar Spier eigenaar van was voordat hij zich in 1929 als professioneel handlezer (psychochiroloog) in Berlijn vestigde.
Onder de auteurs van Iris-Verlag bevinden zich Jakob Haringer, Reinhold Zickel en Friedrich M. Huebner (zie aparte bijlage).

Es ist, mit einigen Ergänzungen, das Reisetagebuch  des kunstsinnigen Braunschweiger Xylographen Franz Hagemann, das er 1889 während einer Reise zur Weltausstellung in Paris anfing. 1890 begann dann seine 2. Reise, die ihn durch die k. u. k. Monarchie, Italien, die Schweiz und Deutschland führte.  Für die brauchte er über zwei Jahre.

The purpose of this paper is to consider a number of valuable architectural accomplishments from the beginning of the XX century, built in Vienna (1919-1933) and Frankfurt am Main (1925-1931), by means of Aldo Rossi’s theoretical thought and analytical approach. Through the author’s re-drawings of selected case studies, it is possible to analyse the relevance of housing in the construction of the city and the fundamental role of the typology and morphology.
Of the European experiences Das rote Wien and Das neue Frankfurt developed the most convincing typological solutions in answer to issues raised by housing problems in the nineteenth century. They correspond to two opposite urban and typological models: the large courtyard block (Hof) and the slab formation block (Siedlung). In this regard, Aldo Rossi provided a thorough examination concerning housing typology showing a particular interest in Vienna and Frankfurt examples: for instance, the article Un piano per Vienna published in Casabella Continuità 277 (1963); some essays on typological features in Aspetti e problemi della tipologia edilizia (1964); The Architecture of the City (1966); and Neues Bauen in Deutschland (1973), edited when he was professor at the ETH Zurich. He also investigated the 1920s housing examples through the relationship between “socialist realism” and “architectural rationalism”.
The main purpose of this contribution is to propose a comparative analysis between the housing projects built in Vienna and Frankfurt that present inspiring and relevant qualities concerning morphology, density and typology. The study is conducted through critical re-drawings of the Höfe and Siedlungen typological assemblage plans by employing the same graphic code in order to get the highest degree of homogeneity and comparability. On the one hand, the purpose is to produce new and original analytical documents – in line with Rossi’s attitude about the project knowledge as necessary instrument –, on the other hand, to demonstrate that these dwelling complexes, even though they were designed almost one hundred years ago, are a fundamental presence within the contemporary city and offer key insights relevant to today’s housing design. The significant teaching of the Vienna and Frankfurt housing initiatives consists in their critical attitude to building the city through typological research, that they posit as an essential element for the society.
Architectural historians and critics have often neglected or looked at these examples from a mere ideological perspective. Thanks to Rossi’s contribution about the observation of the city assumed as “urban artifact”, today, it is possible to investigate these typological solutions using a new approach which intends to better comprehend 1920s’ social housing experiments and, thus, provide a wider understanding.
To sum up, the comparative approach has two goals: on the one hand, it establishes a homogeneous instrument that could efficiently be applied to several other housing cases in order to increase the studies and the research concerning this topic; on the other hand, it stresses the importance of morphological and typological research within the contemporary housing debate and architectural design.

Es geht in diesem Aufsatz um die Bleistiftzeichnung "Pein". Sie ist eine Abzeichnung des Ölgemäldes "Die Nacht" von Max Beckmann. Allerdings zeichnete der Künstler nicht den Endzustand des beeindruckenden Gemäldes. Es ist vielmehr zwischendurch entstanden. Einige Elemente des Endversion von Max Beckmann fehlen in der Zeichnung.

Der Maler Johann Georg Trautmann ist Kunstfreunden seit jeher durch eine knappe Charakterisierung in Goethes Dichtung und Wahrheit als Mitglied eines Frankfurter Künstlerkreises bekannt, der für ein bürgerliches Publikum tätig war. Trautmanns Oeuvre umfasst biblische Szenen, Genredarstellungen, Charakterköpfe und Feuersbrünste. Zusammen mit seinen Zeichnungen und Radierungen wird das Werk in dieser Arbeit erstmals umfassend beschrieben und in einem ausführlichen, kritischen Katalog dokumentiert. Die Untersuchung verdeutlicht die Bedingtheit seines Schaffens innerhalb der spezifischen Kulturgeschichte Frankfurts und stellt die Voraussetzungen sowie die Art und Weise der Rezeption seiner verschiedenen Vorbilder, hier insbesondere Rembrandts, dar. Überlegungen zur Präsenz Trautmanns in zeitgenössischen Sammlungen sowie in der Gemäldesammlung des Grafen Thoranc führen schließlich zu exemplarischen Betrachtungen über die Geschmacks- und Sammlungsgeschichte der deutschen Staffeleimalerei des 18. Jahrhunderts.

The interwar period was particularly crucial for urban policies in Europe because it was characterized by an intense architectural and programmatic debate concerning the form of the city and the production of social housing. Of the European experiences Das rote Wien (Vienna, 1919-1934) and Das neue Frankfurt (Frankfurt am Main, 1925-1933) developed the most convincing typological solutions in answer to issues raised by housing problems in the nineteenth century. In this perspective, the Viennese Kleinwohnung (small flat) and the Frankfurt Existenzminimum (minimum dwelling) correspond to two alternatives, but complementary, dwelling types. The objective of this paper is to draw a comparison of these opposite architectural types according to the following criteria: dimensions, distribution, and spatial composition. Despite their evident differences, both are the result of a modern and rational approach for designing the affordable housing as well as for promoting a new living culture (Wohnkultur). The main concern is the achieved comfort: for example, by adding the entrance hall, the equipped kitchen, the toilets, and an efficient organization of rooms. They constitute an improvement of the hygienic conditions, but also the accomplishment of a democratization program, which means to eliminate the distinction between social classes. The analysis is realized using critical re-drawings of the houses plans in order to get the highest graphic homogeneity. Therefore, the aim of this study is the critical comparison of a selection of case studies from an architectural point of view. Architectural historians and critics have often neglected or observed in an ideological perspective these examples. Today, looking at those the typological solutions means a new approach for a better comprehension and a wider viewpoint of 1920s’ social housing experiences. The comparative approach that animates this paper allows the analysis of several case studies through homogeneous tools. The systematic use of redrawing, stresses the key role of some architectural solutions, which are still today in the centre of housing debate.

Gershom Scholem in Deutschland

Die Biographie des in Berlin geborenen und ab 1923 in Jerusalem lebenden Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Gerhard Scholem ist von den Katastrophen und Umbrüchen des 20. Jahrhunderts geprägt. Im Horizont des für Scholem ambivalenten deutsch-jüdischen Verhältnisses nehmen die Autoren des Bandes seinen Werdegang im Kaiserreich und in der Weimarer Republik in den Blick sowie die Bedeutung, die er als israelischer Gesprächspartner für die Zeitgeschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland hatte. Die Beziehungen zu Walter Benjamin und Hannah Arendt, zu dem Theologen Otto Michel und dem Verleger Siegfried Unseld dokumentieren auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen Scholems Verbindung zu Deutschland, die ihn auch bei persönlicher Lyrik und sogar bei seiner wissenschaftlichen Prosa zur jüdischen Mystik begleitete.

Frankfurt am Main ist seit seiner Erstnennung 794 engstens mit dem fränkischen König und römischen Kaiser Karl dem Großen verbunden. Unter seiner Führung fasste die in der Pfalz Franconofurd abgehaltene Synode weitreichende und nachhaltige Beschlüsse zur Wirtschafts-, Währungs-, Religions-und Kulturpolitik. Anlässlich des 1200. Todestages legt das Archäologische Museum Frankfurt sechs Beiträge über neue historische und archäologische Studien zu Herrschaft, Hof und Pfalzen um 800 vor. Sie befassen sich unter anderem mit der Eroberung und Missionierung der Sachsen, den Pfalzen Aachen und Ingelheim, den Pfalzen im karolingischen Herrschafts-und Rechtsgefüge, dem Reliquienschatz aus der Seligenstädter Klosterbasilika von Einhard, dem Biographen Karls des Großen und Intendanten seiner Hofwerkstätten, sowie mit Grabfunden des 8. Jahrhunderts aus Frankfurt am Main-Harheim.

La reconnaissance d’un principe de complémentarité pour les modèles architecturaux (PANERAI, CASTEX, DEPAULE, 1977) des années Vingt correspond à l’identification d’une méthode comparative, qui permet leur observation et leur compréhension à travers les instruments appropriés. Selon la théorie de la physique quantique formulée par Niels Bohr en 1927, les aspects corpusculaires et ondulatoires d’un phénomène physique ne peuvent pas être perçus simultanément : un objet quantique peut se présenter que sous un seul de ces deux aspects à la fois. En conséquence, les deux aspects sont les représentations complémentaires d’une même réalité, puisqu’ils sont essentiels pour fournir cette description physique complète du phénomène. De plus, l’apparition sous une forme plutôt que une autre dépend du type d’instrument utilisé pour l’observation. En paraphrasant le principe de Bohr dans le contexte architectural des années Vingt, les villes de Vienne et Francfort ont développé deux modèles totalement différents, mais tous les deux représentent la construction rapide de nouvelles habitations avec des loyers abordables pour les masses (KÄHLER, 1985). Grâce à l’étude typologique on peut distinguer de manière précise les grands îlots à cour de Vienne et les complexes en barres de Francfort. Ces formes urbaines correspondent à des choix architecturaux et urbains qui constituent les interventions les plus remarquables dans le panorama européen. L’étude de Gert Kähler en 1985 constitue la seule à utiliser une approche comparative entre les deux villes. A partir de cette publication, la présente contribution explore la méthode comparative utile à établir une comparaison entre les logements de masse des années Vingt. En même temps, la réflexion concerne aussi la nature des instruments « techniques » à appliquer pour effectuer une observation et une analyse correcte. Dans ce cas, l’outil du « redessin » joue un rôle fondamental. En effet, l’hypothèse, selon laquelle les modèles architecturaux différents de Vienne et Francfort sont comparables, exige tout d’abord une démonstration par la neutralité et l’impartialité du matériel graphique de support. Le redessin avec le degré maximum d’homogénéité se réfère à l’exposition "Die Wohnung für das Existenzminimum", realisée en 1929 à Francfort à l’occasion du deuxième Congrès moderne international d’architecture (AYMONINO, 1971). L’exposition consistait en la comparaison des plans des logements sociaux bâtis dans plusieurs pays européens, grâce à l’utilisation du même type de représentation (CIAM, 1930). La présente contribution vise à démontrer l’efficacité de l’outil du « redessin », en proposant quelques exemples réalisés avec le même code graphique. A un siècle de distance de leur réalisation, l’objectif principal de l’approche comparative entre ces cas d’études est de réexaminer de façon critique une tradition qui a subi l’influence des schémas concernant l’évolution de l’îlot, produits par les architectes du Mouvement Moderne (MAY, 1930). Dans ce sens, la prochaine étape que la recherche peut envisager est de considérer Vienne et Francfort comme modèles complémentaires, en tant qu’éléments essentiels d’une situation et d’un débat commun. En effet, la comparaison n’établit pas si un modèle a prévalu sur l’autre, mais elle offre un regard impartial sur leur complexité et leur richesse. La portée de ces aspects méthodologiques, importants au niveau conceptuel et opérationnel, consiste en la « construction » d’un grand instrument objectif concernant les modèles architecturaux des années Vingt, qui peut répondre à des questions que l’architecture ne cesse encore aujourd'hui de se poser.

Angesichts steigender Mieten und Wohnungspreise haben sich in den letzten Jahren vielerorts soziale Proteste gegen die Neoliberalisierung der Wohnraumversorgung formiert. Am Beispiel von Frankfurt am Main und Tel Aviv-Jaffa untersucht Sebastian Schipper vergleichend, inwiefern solche Widerständigkeiten eine signifikante Abweichung von Prozessen der Vermarktlichung und Privatisierung anstoßen können. Gelingt es städtischen sozialen Bewegungen, darauf hinzuwirken, dass die Versorgung mit Wohnraum der Marktlogik entzogen und aus Kreisläufen der Kapitalverwertung herausgenommen wird? Zeichnen sich in den gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen Konturen eines entstehenden postneoliberalen Regimes der Dekommodifizierung des Wohnens ab? Im Sinne einer aktivistischen Stadtforschung wird herausgearbeitet, welche politischen Alternativen zur Realisierung bezahlbaren Wohnraums in den sozialen Kämpfen zum Vorschein kommen, und strategisch nach ihrer Durchsetzbarkeit gefragt.

The Ghetto, a PhD thesis written by German Jewish immigrant Louis Wirth, became a classic of Jewish urban sociology in the decades after its initial publication in 1928. Wirth’s book was an ambivalent apologetic explaining the persistence of Chicago’s center-city immigrant Jewish enclave, which was known generally and in academic parlance as “the Ghetto.” His book chronicled all that had been done to and by European Jews to give them a ghetto mentality. In Wirth’s view, that ghetto psyche should now be shed in America as, he believed, it had in Frankfurt. Yet even though Jews in the West had reached modernity’s promised land, the ghetto was still on the modern map.

Wirth chose Frankfurt as the place to begin his historical-developmental account of the voluntary Jewish ghetto in the United States. Both in Frankfurt and Chicago, overcrowded Jewish districts had been devastated and transformed by great fires. More important, Wirth used the Frankfurt ghetto as a model for the Jewish ghetto mindset, a cultural psyche that could be and effectively was literally exported from Frankfurt’s Judengasse, eventually landing in the Russian shtetl. For Wirth, the dense involuntary ghetto form was universal in Christian Europe from the later Middle Ages onward, and exclusion was evidence of Christian hostility. Thus in his view, the ghetto is a place in the past which has no proper place in the present. The “solution” to Chicago’s dense East European ghetto could be inspired by the earlier long-sought acceptance of Frankfurt’s once-ghettoized Jews. The example of Frankfurt encouraged Wirth to believe that the racial aspect of the Jewish question could be solved through successful dispersal from the ghetto and assimilation.

Wirth's 1928 book blended Chicago School of Sociology thought on inner city ethnic urban life as an organic zone of decay with an underlying insistence that the cultural and historical antecedents of the American ghetto and of the "Ghetto Jew" could be explained in a history that starts and ends with Frankfurt. In sum, Wirth espoused earlier conventional views that East European Jews posed a danger to other Jews through choosing to voluntarily cluster together, thus impeding an assimilatory agenda also important to the Chicago School. Yet it bears emphasis that his study came at a very particular historical conjuncture. Mass Jewish emigration to the United States had just recently been stopped. Wirth wrote at a time when the demolition of the old ghetto walls at least in Western Europe could still be confidently celebrated. Frankfurt, seen as an ancient ghetto whose gates had been shattered, is at the center of a book that became important to U.S. sociology, anthropology and geography, through urban immigrant studies, and the study of Jews.

Our moral responsibility for our actions seems to depend on our possession of a power to determine for ourselves what actions we perform - a power of self-determination.  What kind of power is this?
 
The paper discusses what power in general might involve, what differing kinds of power there might be, and the nature of self-determination in particular.  A central question is whether this power on which our moral responsibility depends is by its nature a two-way 
power, involving a power over alternatives or a freedom to do otherwise. 

Criticism is made of various attempts to understand self-determination in one-way terms, whether as a capacity for rationality (McDowell) or as a form of voluntariness (Frankfurt).  It is argued in particular that Frankfurt's arguments to show that moral responsibility does not depend on a freedom to do otherwise beg the question against his opponents.

Dutch-language literature in German translation is generally regarded as a success story. This article presents an overview of the tendencies in the translation of Dutch literary prose into German between 1990 and 2016, taking the two Frankfurter Bookfairs of 1993 and 2016 as initial stakes. Focusing strictly on one genre, that of literary prose, it aims at an accurate and realistic view on the tendencies and the diversity of authors in the German market. Be-sides this, it tackles the main recurrent themes in studies on translations of Dutch-language literature, such as the proportion between Dutch and Flemish authors; the share of canonical titles and the occurrence of national images and stereotypes and looks for also critical reac-tions from German publishers and critics, Bookfair organizers and translators.

O termo “fetichismo”, que surge na modernidade, encontra aplicações importantes em três diferentes áreas: a antropologia, a psicanálise e a economia política. Entre essas aplicações há várias correspondências, incluindo o papel fundamental nelas desempenhado pela dimensão da visualidade. Partindo da concepção marxista de fetichismo da mercadoria, Benjamin é levado a enfatizar tal dimensão por intermédio da noção de fantasmagoria, que remete aos aspectos mais visíveis e exuberantes da mercadoria, a seu impacto subjetivo e a seu espraiamento para outras esferas da existência. Dessa forma, ele dá conta de facetas espetaculares do mundo do consumo já detectáveis no século XIX e antecipa desenvolvimentos teóricos posteriores, representados, por exemplo, por Debord, Haug e Baudrillard. / The term “fetishism,” which emerges in modernity, finds important applications in three different areas: anthropology, psychoanalysis, and political economy. Among these applications there are multiple correlations, including the fundamental role played in them by the visual dimension. Starting from the Marxist conception of commodity fetishism, Benjamin comes to emphasize this dimension through the notion of phantasmagoria, which refers to the most visible and exuberant aspects of commodity, their subjective impact and their spreading to other spheres of existence. Thus, he takes account of spectacular facets of the consumer world already detectable in the 19th century and anticipates further theoretical developments, represented, for example, by Debord, Haug, and Baudrillard.

The context in which the research work lies, is the work of Ernst May with regard to the project Siedlugen “Niddatal” (1925-1930), that is Praunheim, Römerstadt and Westhausen compared to the new Riedberg Siedlung (1997-2017) in Frankfurt. Here it is important to demonstrate the “continuity” rather than the “fracture”, in the time, between the projects on the Nidda and the latest works concerning the “Housing and the shape of the city”, following a precise idea of urban planning, from the living spaces to the city. The research aims, as its principal objective to find a formal structure, with a high degree of generality, to use for the analysis of settlements based on a very specific archetype, the “Angersiedlung”. An archetype that allows, in the past as in the present, 1925-2017, to organize the elements of the single composition, the spaces and the housing, and also the elements of the city, the Siedlungen (Residential settlements), to form the Trabantenstadt (Satellite City).

The exhibition, which took place from 8 August to 8 September 2019, is celebrating Enrico Mylius, the "founding father" of Villa Vigoni, in his hometown of Frankfurt am Main, 250 years after his birth.
Developed thanks to the collaboration between Villa Vigoni and the Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität, the exhibition aims to tell the story of his extraordinary personal and entrepreneurial experience in Germany and Italy during the nineteenth century. The two important commercial and cultural centres of Frankfurt am Main and Milan, together with Weimar, formed Enrico Mylius's "cosmos". His activities as a merchant, banker and benefactor, as well as the history of the Mylius-Vigoni family - and therefore the origins of the German-Italian Centre for European Excellence, Villa Vigoni - will be reconstructed in the exhibition on the basis of special documents from the time and works of art. The exhibition reconstructs the character of a man who developed a vast network of binational contacts and was extremely interested in art, literature and more generally in culture. Mylius's legacy is more significant than ever in German-Italian relations, especially with regard to European issues.
Most of the exhibits come from the Villa Vigoni collections, accompanied by loans from various institutions in Frankfurt and Milan, including: Städel Museum, Senckenberg Naturmuseum, Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Società d'Incoraggiamento d'Arti e Mestieri (SIAM), Istituto dei Ciechi and Museo della Seta.

Anlässlich des 250. Geburtstags des "Gründervaters" der Villa Vigoni war in seiner Heimatstadt Frankfurt am Main vom 8. August bis zum 8. September 2019 eine Heinrich Mylius gewidmete Ausstellung zu sehen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität richtet die Villa Vigoni den Blick auf eine bemerkenswerte Familien- und Unternehmergeschichte zwischen Deutschland und Italien im 19. Jahrhundert. Die beiden Handels- und Kulturmetropolen Frankfurt am Main und Mailand bildeten mit Weimar Heinrich Mylius' 'Kosmos'. Das Wirken des Kaufmanns, Bankiers und Wohltäters sowie die Geschicke der Familie(n) Mylius-Vigoni - und somit die Ursprünge des Deutsch-Italienischen Zentrums für Europäische Exzellenz, Villa Vigoni - werden in der Ausstellung anhand zeitgenössischer Dokumente und Kunstwerke rekonstruiert. Die Ausstellung folgt den Spuren einer Persönlichkeit, die ein weitläufiges binationales Netzwerk unterhielt und sich für Kunst, Literatur und Kultur im Allgemeinen begeisterte. Mylius' Erbe ist auch heute von Relevanz für die deutsch-italienischen Beziehungen, besonders im Blick auf europäische Themen.
Die ausgestellten Objekte stammen zum Großteil aus den Beständen der Villa Vigoni und werden durch Leihgaben aus Frankfurter und Mailänder Institutionen bereichert, u.a.: Städel Museum, Senckenberg Naturmuseum, Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Gesellschaft zur Beförderung von Kunst und Handwerk (SIAM), Istituto dei Ciechi und Museo della Seta.

La mostra ha celebrato, a 250 anni dalla nascita, il "padre fondatore" di Villa Vigoni nella sua città natale, Francoforte sul Meno, dall'8 agosto all’8 settembre 2019.
Risultato della collaborazione tra Villa Vigoni e il Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität, l’esposizione ha lo scopo di raccontare una straordinaria esperienza famigliare e imprenditoriale tra Germania e Italia nel XIX secolo. Due importanti centri di commercio e cultura come Francoforte sul Meno e Milano costituiscono insieme a Weimar il "cosmo" di riferimento per Enrico Mylius. Il ruolo delle sue attività di commerciante, banchiere e benefattore, così come la storia della famiglia Mylius-Vigoni - e quindi le origini del Centro Italo-Tedesco per l’Eccellenza Europea, Villa Vigoni – verranno ricostruiti nella mostra sulla base di appositi documenti d’epoca e opere d'arte. La mostra ricostruisce una personalità che ha sviluppato una vasta rete di contatti binazionale, fortemente interessata all’arte, alla letteratura e più in generale alla cultura. L'eredità di Mylius risulta ancora oggi più che mai significativa nelle relazioni italo-tedesche, specialmente per quanto riguarda i temi europei.
Gli oggetti esposti provengono in gran parte dalle collezioni di Villa Vigoni e sono arricchiti da prestiti di diverse istituzioni di Francoforte e Milano, tra cui: Städel Museum, Senckenberg Naturmuseum, Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Società d’Incoraggiamento d’Arti e Mestieri (SIAM), Istituto dei Ciechi e Museo della Seta.

In the interwar period, the European urban policies were characterized by an intense architectural and programmatic debate concerning the form of the city and the production of mass housing. Of the European modern experiences, das rote Wien (Vienna, 1919-1934) and das neue Frankfurt (Frankfurt am Main, 1925-1933) developed the most convincing typological solutions for answering to the raising housing shortage and terrible sanitary conditions.
In this perspective, the Viennese small apartments and the Frankfurt single-family house correspond to two alternatives, but complementary, dwelling types. The objective of this paper is to draw a comparison between these opposite architectural arrangements according to the following criteria: dimensions, surfaces and spatial organisation. Despite their evident differences, both are the result of a modern and rational approach for designing affordable housing as well as for promoting new comfort standards, an improvement of the hygienic conditions, and a new living culture. The aim of this study is a critical comparison between a selection of case studies employing novel re-drawings of dwelling plans. Getting the highest degree of graphic homogeneity, these documents aim to thoroughly illustrate analogies and differences in dwelling layouts and qualities produced by the two cities. Architectural historians and critics have often observed these examples in an ideological perspective or, even more, they have neglected the typological aspects. The comparative methodology which animates this paper stresses the key role that some architectural solutions, designed by the group of Viennese and Frankfurt architects, can still have in the today housing debate. As a matter of fact, they offer still valuable suggestions for today’s housing initiatives. Although, Vienna and Frankfurt instances were designed almost one hundred year ago, they are still fundamental parts of the contemporary city.

Les expériences de politique urbaine menées à Vienne et à Francfort dans l’entre-deux-guerres – Das rote Wien et Das neue Frankfurt  – constituent aujourd’hui encore des références incontournables dans l’histoire du logement collectif en Europe. Les modèles architecturaux à l’origine de leur conception, le Hof à Vienne et la Siedlung à Francfort, représentent les «polarités extrêmes» des logements réalisés à cette époque. S’ils ont fait l’objet de nombreuses études, le principe de complémentarité qu’y décèle Alessandro Porotto à travers son analyse rigoureuse offre une piste de réflexion originale, que ce soit pour l’étude historique ou pour le potentiel architectural de ces réalisations. Au-delà de la compréhension documentaire des expériences viennoise et francfortoise, l’auteur les conçoit comme deux paradigmes d’organismes urbains appartenant pleinement à la ville contemporaine.

À travers cette étude comparative émergent ainsi des questions cruciales quant au projet de logement collectif et à son évolution future. Sans s’arrêter sur des préjugés idéologiques, L’intelligence des formes présente une analyse critique allant de l’échelle de la ville au plan de logement pour présenter les résultats de ces deux modèles alternatifs de projet. Les documents d’archives viennent étoffer une série exhaustive de «redessins» méticuleux qui dévoile les complexités de ces ensembles, permettant de comparer aisément leurs spécificités typologiques. Les redessins de l’auteur forment ainsi, comme le signale Bruno Marchand dans sa préface, un lien très fort entre l’architecture et l’urbain. Associés au texte, ils donnent au lecteur un outil clé dans la compréhension des formes de logement, de leur vocation collective et de leur intelligence.

Claudio Magris est notamment connu comme l’auteur de Le Mythe et l’empire dans la littérature autrichienne moderne (1963) et de Danube (1986). Jusqu’à présent, la recherche abordait surtout ses travaux relatifs à Trieste, sa ville natale, qui était le centre commercial de l’Empire des Habsbourg. Toutefois, cette contribution traite de sa relation avec Turin, où il a passé sa jeunesse dans les années 1960 et où il a enseigné à l’université dans les années 1970. La ville de Turin qui se situe non loin de la frontière entre l’Italie et la France, servait de base pour la maison des Savoie depuis le seizième siècle. À la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, le philosophe allemand Nietzsche a séjourné dans cette ville. Au vingtième siècle, Turin devint le centre de l’industrie moderne et de la culture journalistique. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, cette ville cosmopolite, où Cesare Pavese, Italo Calvino et Natalia Ginzburg travaillèrent chez l’éditeur Einaudi, joua un rôle central dans le mouvement antifasciste. Cet esprit spécifiquement turinois marqua fortement l’écrivain Magris. Pendant ses études, il publia des articles journalistiques et était sensible à la particularité culturelle turinoise. Sa formation à Turin influença aussi ses prises de parole dans le quotidien Corriere della Sera, son engagement politique avec Umberto Eco ainsi que ses séjours à Paris. En conclusion, on peut considérer Magris comme un écrivain profondément européen.

Der Frankfurter Bürger Wicker Frosch gründete ein Kloster für 30 Nonnen mit angeschlossenem Spital mit 20 Plätzen, die den Regeln des Deutschen Ordens folgen sollten, mit der Frankfurter Deutschordensniederlassung in Sachsenhausen aber keine Verbindung hatten. Kaiser Karl IV. bestätigte die Gründung 1351, Papst Innocenz Vi. 1357. Das Kloster diente auch als Versorgungsanstalt für unverheiratete Töchter wohlhabender Bürger der Stadt. Bei Austritt mußte die Mitgift zurückerstattet werden, dies ist allerdings erst nach dem Einsetzen reformatorischer Predigten 1526 nachweisbar: die unterschiedlichen Quellen nennen zehn oder dreizehn Austritte. Entgegen dem Willen des Stifters behauptete die Familie Forsch Einfluß noch während des 15. Jahrhunderts behaupten, vor allem durch die Verbindung mit den Holzhausen. In das Administratorengremium entsandten die Nonnen ein Mitglied des Rates, in dessen Hand diese Wohlfahrtseinrichtung nach der Säkularisation fallen sollte. Die wirtschaftliche Ausstattung war reichhaltig, vor allem mit umfangreichem Grundbesitz am Rebstock, und konnte bis zur Reformation sogar erweitert werden.

Wanneer wij geconfronteerd worden met mensen die zich
normoverschrijdend gedragen of met onze eigen fouten en
tekortkomingen, dan kan de abstracte en theoretische
vraag naar het bestaan van de vrije wil rijzen en, zo
betoog ik, naast onrust ook een zeker gemoedsrust
brengen. Waarom? Omdat het ons ter overweging meegeeft
dat fouten en vergissingen -– ernstige morele incluis --
hun grond hebben in oorzaken die onze individuele
vermogens overstijgt.

Gerald Kreft, dans son nouveau livre sur l’anatomiste et neurologue Ludwig Edinger (1855–1918), souligne qu’on doit regarder la vie et les travaux de ce savant de Francfort-sur-le-Main dans le contexte de son éducation socioculturelle juive. Son ambition est de reconstruire l’histoire de la réception de l’oeuvre de ce chercheur extrêmement doué en neurosciences dans l’histoire de la médecine allemande. Pour ce but, Deutsch-Jüdische Geschichte und Hirnforschung réunit plusieurs travaux précédents de Kreft sur Edinger et son Institut neurologique (p.111). En outre, cet ouvrage ajoute de nombreux portraits de chercheurs autour de la carrière d’Edinger à Strasbourg, Giessen et finalement à Francfort. Le travail comprend à vrai dire deux parties, l’une
plutôt biographique et l’autre contextuelle. Dans une première partie, Kreft s’efforce de resituer dans le contexte scientifique et culturel de l’époque les pratiques d’investigation et la généalogie de l’organisation de l’institut d’Edinger dans la capitale bourgeoise et commerciale de la Hesse. Durant sa formation, son intérêt se porte tout d’abord sur la neuroanatomie, domaine dans lequel il est arrivé à une supériorité exceptionnelle comme l’a dit Adolf Wallenberg
(1862–1949) juste après la mort de son maître (p. 37). Mais après son départ de Strasbourg, en présentant sa thèse d’habilitation à l’Université de Giessen en 1881, Edinger
rencontre des obstacles qui sont associés à ses origines juives et à un climat très antisémite dans nombre de Länder allemands. Kreft développe cette thématique en détail dans un ensemble de neuf chapitres.

Die Frankfurter Rechtsanwältin Seda Başay-Yıldız und ihre Familie erhalten seit mehreren Monaten Morddrohun-gen im Namen eines "NSU 2.0". Offensichtlich nutzen die Täter dafür nicht-öffentliche Informationen aus einem Polizeicomputer. Eine kritische Öffentlichkeit verlangt Aufklärung und das Bekanntwerden weiterer rechts-extremer Vorfälle in Sicherheitsbehörden wirft die Frage auf: Haben wir ein strukturelles Problem? Die Polizei-forschung zeigt indes: die Problematik ist nicht neu und sowohl der institutionelle Umgang als auch gesellschaft-liche Umstände begünstigen extrem rechte Tendenzen. Helfen kann nur eine konsequente Fehlerkultur. von Paul Zschocke Schon nach der ersten Drohung gegen Başay-Yıldız im August 2018 führten Ermittlungen des Landeskri-minalamtes direkt in das 1. Frankfurter Polizeirevier. Von einem dortigen Dienstcomputer waren Meldeda-ten der Anwältin abgefragt worden. Es folgten Durch-suchungen von Privat-und Diensträumen, die eine Chat-Gruppe Polizeibediensteter mit neonazistischen und volksverhetzenden Inhalten aufdeckten. Ob die Beamten selbst für die Drohschreiben verantwortlich sind oder sie "nur" Daten weitergegeben haben, ist bis PRIF Spotlight 6/2019 dato unklar-dienst-und strafrechtliche Verfahren lau-fen, die Verdächtigen schweigen. Dass Başay-Yıldız ins-besondere wegen ihrer Tätigkeit als Strafverteidigerin für Gefährder und NSU-Opferanwältin mit dem Tode bedroht wurde, zeigt politische Brisanz. Im Dezember wurde der hessische Innenminister Beuth wegen man-gelnder Informationspraxis im Innenausschuss heftig kritisiert. Auch der Frankfurter Polizeipräsident Beres-will verwies auf die Ermittlung und wehrte sich dage-gen, die Polizei der Stadt hätte generell ein Problem mit Rechtsextremismus in ihren Reihen: "Dafür gibt es kei-ne Grundlage, keine Fakten, auf die man sich beziehen könnte", so Bereswill.¹ Suggeriert wird damit, dass es sich um einen Einzelfall handelt.
