Questo e-book è una condivisione di contributi che vedono il 2015 - anche in modo non convenzionale – come un laboratorio di conoscenza condivisa a cielo aperto. È suddiviso in quattro sezioni: Intro, Case History, Scenari e Immaginifico (non a caso in questa sequenza, che parte dalla realtà per arrivare
sino alla nostra mente, alle idee e all’immaginifico collettivo) e tratterà di mondi sempre più interconnessi e complementari tra loro che, in occasione dell’Esposizione Universale, saranno, per l’intero 2015, sotto i riflettori di tutto il globo.

World’s Fair or commonly referred as Expo, is an organization that takes place in various countries and cities since the mid-19th century. The introduction of new technology, innovations or simply gathering attention on some issues are the most popular qualities attributed to Expo. Among all, Expo is a great economic movement that is to be considered in a bivariate context. In this paper, the main discussion focuses on the determining the effects of such a big event bringing a ‘plug-in’ urbanity for the hosting city along with economy. In this given context, in order to exemplify the theoretical discussion, 2015 Expo held in Milan is discussed. Milan is currently hosting Expo 2015 that gives Italy the opportunity to rethink its geopolitical role in a field that is highly appreciated abroad: the food processing industry. In fact in the field of nutrition Italy a great power and the theme “feeding the planet, energy for life” is a perfect subject for a country that encounters difficulties to get out of the current recession. But what is an Expo?

We present the techniques for retrieving songs by music segments. A music segment consists of a segment type and the associated beat and pitch information. The similarity measures for the beat and pitch are defined. Two index structures for music segments are proposed, in which the minimal and maximal values of the beat and pitch of the music segments are stored to aid the song retrieval process. Moreover, the threshold propagation functions are developed for efficient approximate searching. Experiments are performed to show the superiority of this approach

Milano si prepara all’Expo. La sovraesposizione mediatica a cui da mesi è sottoposta ha riportato all’ordine del giorno il problema della sua identità. Come presentarsi al mondo? Quale faccia mostrare? Quale idea di città? Ciò che è diventata riflette la sua vera anima? Costruita sull’assunto che «il cambiamento è virtù che in alcuni passaggi l’ha resa grande», la mostra appena conclusa “Milano Mai Vista” (Triennale, 27 gennaio – 22 febbraio 2015), presentata come «indagine sull’inconscio architettonico e urbanistico di Milano, capace di far affiorare un “rimosso” pieno di opportunità e di offrirlo alla reinterpretazione con gli occhi del presente e le richieste del futuro», ha cercato – pioniera tra le iniziative culturali – di dare una risposta ai quesiti iniziali riflettendo sulle trasformazioni della città, reali o immaginate.

One of the major problems with existing content-based image retrieval systems is that their objective similarity can rarely match the user's subjective and context-dependent similarity interpretation. We propose a novel approach to linking images and textual information to overcome this problem. First, salient image objects and also their structural and visual features are extracted. Next, keywords and images are linked in two stages: (1) by mapping low-level visual features of objects to related words using feature lexicons, and (2) by assigning words expressing higher-level semantic concepts to images on the basis of the feature-related words, lexical definitions, and the user's relevance feedback. Experimental results show that the user's retrieval semantics can be approximated better via this two-level multi-modality and also by supporting a large variety of querying and browsing schemes and thus higher-level interactivity.

This paper presents a new algorithm for moving object detection in the H.264/AVC compressed domain which relies on motion vector information. In contrast to other motion vector-based algorithms, special attention is paid to noisy motion vectors as they highly decrease the performance of these algorithms. We propose to estimate the reliability of motion vectors by comparing them with projected motion vectors from surrounding frames. As such, noisy motion vectors are localized. By combining this information with the magnitude of motion vectors, foreground objects are distinguished. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm achieves significantly better segmentation quality compared to other motion vector-based approaches.

Abstract While there has been increased attention to emotions and institutions, the role of denial and repression of emotions has been overlooked. We argue that not only the expression and the feeling of emotions, but also their control through denial contribute to stabilize institutional orders. The role denial plays is that of avoiding the emergence of disruptive emotions that might motivate a challenge to the status quo. Reflecting on the example of the livestock industry, we propose a theoretical model that identifies seeds for change in denied emotional contradictions in an integration of the cultural-relational and issue-based conceptions of organizational fields.

This paper addresses multimedia end user system design for content distribution over heterogeneous networks and terminals, with particular focus on End-to-End quality of service (QoS) control. A multimedia terminal comprising content-related metadata processor, usage environment characteristics provider, end user QoS monitor and H.264’s extension Scalable Video Coding (SVC) audio-visual player in coordination under a terminal middleware, has been conceived and implemented. This end user terminal enables End-to-End QoS control for content adaptation solution both in semantic and physical approaches to maximize end user’s perceptual experience and minimize resources. Such design approach illustrates a possible architecture for next generation multimedia end user terminal supporting MPEG-21 and H.264 extension SVC codec standards. Riflettendo sulle tematiche dell’integrazione tra urbanistica, sviluppo e mobilità, è stato sviluppato il progetto E-SCAPE il cui titolo sta per ‘Electronic- landSCAPE’, indicando le possibili integrazioni tra il contesto paesaggistico e territoriale con le nuove tecnologie di comunicazione e informazione. L’idea si esplicita in due elementi chiave: da una parte, l'utilizzo delle tecnologie informatiche avanzate per l’elaborazione di un servizio volto a migliorare le pratiche di fruizione del territorio da parte di diversi utenti (abitanti e visitatori) e dall’altra, la promozione e la valorizzazione territoriale. L’ambito d’interesse è stato individuato nel territorio compreso tra Torino e Milano, caratterizzato da un forte squilibrio sia materiale (concentrazione infrastrutturale, effetto ‘tunnel’ creato dalle reti veloci), che immateriale (accesso ai flussi di dati e d'informazioni concentrati attorno ai due principali poli urbani), provocando un isolamento ed una emarginazione dei territori intermedi. Il progetto proposto consiste pertanto in un'applicazione per terminali mobili di comunicazione (smartphone, tablet, ecc.) che utilizza le tecnologie di prossimità per il ribilanciamento territoriale, attivando e incentivando la fruizione dei luoghi attraverso la promozione delle potenzialità del territorio. L’idea gravita attorno all’evento catalizzatore dell’ EXPO 2015, per il quale sono attesi milioni di visitatori, conferendo visibilità a scala internazionale alla Mi-To smart-region.
