Epitome

This article proposes some remarks on two passages of the historiographical work of Florus, in particular with regard to the topic image of the 'brevis tabella' (praef. 3) and of the report of the apotheosis of Romulus (1,1,16-18); the purpose is to get new re!ections on some literary characters of the work and to illustrate by new stylistic arguments the rhetorical appeal of Florus’ literary setting. The writer does not repeat the classical and Livian way of writing history as opus oratorium, but he does not even choose a poor and essential style, characteristic of the tradition of the breviarii: the stylistic analysis and the survey on any literary models show that Florus aims to give his own prose a 'color' that we can call generally poetic. So, for the historian this is a way to increase the effectiveness of his writing and to communicate adequately with a selective audience, contemporaries and future readers, more careful to enhancing this original feature.

This contribution (in German) presents the complete set of Jacopo Strada's numismatic works in their chronological order. It includes the printed works as well as the manuscripts preserved in several European cities (Gotha, Vienna, London, Paris, Prague). These works are discussed as well as put in place in accordance with their importance for contemporaneous numismatic-antiquarian research. Finally, a survey of Strada's numismatic works is provided stating the precise place of preservation and signature.

Eine durch den Vergleich mit der homerischen Vorlage geführte Strukturanalyse der Ilias Latina zeigt ein riesiges Missverhältnis bei der Inhaltsverteilung, die aber nicht als Zeichen einer Nachlässigkeit bzw. Unfähigkeit zu verstehen ist. Vielmehr, gerade dank Mechanismen von Erweiterung, Abkürzung und Anpassung hat der Autor ein neues carmen epicum realisieren wollen, das einer neuen intellektuellen Spannung entspricht und die Sprache eines neuen Publikums in einem ganz verschiedenen kulturellen Klima verwendet. Dasselbe Ziel begründet auch einige mikrostrukturelle Mittel, die man bei der Analyse einzelner Episoden findet: Abänderungen und Unterlassungen, Beschleunigungen und Verlangsamungen, Ergänzungen und Anspielungen auf das, was verschwiegen wird, Kontaminationen und Anspielungen, Vorwegnahmen, interne Anspielungen, Präsenz von dichterischen (und nicht bloß epischen) Schemen.

The aim of this essay is to provide a description of Francesco Negri’s Epitome  in Ovid’s Metamorphoses  (1542)  and to compare the text with other coeval epitomes. The study case for this contribution  is  the passage of the creation of the world  (cosmogonic mith), which opens the first book of the  Metamorphoses  (verses 5-81). This essay has also a second intent, i.e. methodological, that is to compare the document by questioning it through  the  ‘lens’  of  other  scientific-disciplinary  areas,  studying  it  with  other  tools, patterns  and  perspectives.  The conclusions  of  the  research,  therefore,  will  be  analytical about the historical-literary description, but also functional to share the results with the linguists, text interpreters and scholars.

Marcianus of Heraclea (beginning of the Vth century) was the editor of a
geographical corpus, as well as an intermediary between the ancient Greek tradition
and the Byzantine one. The aim of this paper is to analyze his main work, The
Periplous of the Outer Sea, especially the introductory chapters, in order to show that
the author intended to organize the geographic description of the two Oceans in
units, the Periplous of single areas. This case is confirmed by the codicological
analysis of the manuscript (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, Supplément Grec 443).
After that, we try to reconstruct the original structure of the whole Periplous of the
Outer Sea and to deepen its indirect tradition (Stephanus of Byzantium’s Ethniká).
The paper represents a first step towards a more general project of a new critical
edition of the text.

The article considers the statements, which date the Exodus to the start of Dynasty XVIII (to the historical reign of Ahmose I) or to its end (the post-Amarna time). They should come back not to the authentic text by Manetho but to its tradition and present variations of a general idea that the Exodus coincided with the end of a tumultuous time in Egypt and coincided with a boundary in its history.

Es wurde deutlich, dass die narrativen Strategien in einem auf extreme Verdichtung und Verkürzung angelegten Epyllion, das eine popularisierte Iliad light in eine neue Kultur übertragen will, sich von den erzählerischen Verfahren des homerischen Originals, das sich aus einer mündlichen Erzähltradition über Jahrhunderte hinweg entwickelt hat, fundamental unterscheiden müssen. In der lateinischen Mini-Version hat ein der Erzählerinstanz angenäherte Achilleus als Retardator, der zudem aufgrund seines agonistischen, das Gegenüber herabsetzenden und spöttischen Redens und durch die in seinem Charakter angelegten Brüche und Spannungen textlängend wirkt, nichts zu suchen. Nach den historisch-sozialen Bedingungen unter Nero werden zudem nun humanistische und pazifistische Gedanken entsprechend der Kaiserideologie in den Vordergrund gerückt, die nicht auf das Original zurückprojiziert werden sollten, das auf einer archaischen Adelsethik basiert.
Gerade im Schluss wurde die narrative Differenz zum Modelltext der Ilias besonders augenfällig. Die homerische Tradition schafft nur kurzzeitig closure in einem Gefühl der gegenseitigen Verschränkung der Gegner im Leid, indem ganz am Ende die rituelle Verarbeitung mit der Rückkehr in den Alltag des Kriegs aufgehoben wird, während in der Ilias Latina alles auf den Tod und die Überhöhung Hektors hinausläuft, womit closure erzeugt wird, die durch die Technik des freeze frame noch unterstrichen wird. Mit der pasticheartigen Aneignung von Vergil und Ovid überträgt Baebius das monumentale Werk, den Ausgangspunkt der antiken Literatur und Bildung, in eine einfache, populäre Ilias light mit ganz neuer, dem Zeitgeschmack und der Kaiserideologie angepasster Perspektivierung. Damit wird das übermächtige Großepos zum geschlossenen Epyllion. In einer dem Eros geschuldeten Episode der menis aus dem großen Troia-Zyklus degradiert die Ilias in lateinischer Kurzform trotz aller Homerizität den troiafreundlich fokussierten Stoff zur Vorgeschichte der großen Aeneis. Damit tritt der Hypertext mit dem Hypotext in einen Wettstreit. Die literarische Aneignung der Ilias in so gedrängter und einfacher narrativer Form wird in einem intertextuellen Spiel weiterer Stufen von aemulatio zum Brennspiegel, um die kulturelle Wirkmächtigkeit Homers unter den sozio-historischen Bedingungen der Nerozeit für die Identitätsbildung Roms fruchtbar werden zu lassen. Ob Baebius dies ästhetisch gelungen ist, steht auf einem anderen Blatt.

Este trabalho tem como objeto o "Epítome das 'Histórias Filípicas' de Pompeio Trogo", de Justino, com enfoque nas passagens em que os romanos são retratados de alguma forma. Pouco se sabe a respeito do autor, e as possibilidades de sua datação variam do século II ao IV da Era Comum. Uma pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter bibliográfico, foi realizada com dois objetivos principais: traduzir trechos selecionados a partir do texto estabelecido por MariePierre Arnaud-Lindet (JUSTINUS, 2003) e refletir acerca da sobrevivência da obra e de sua leitura, no contexto brasileiro, por meio de intermediários, principalmente – mas não só – traduções para outras línguas estrangeiras. A tradução realizada apoia-se, sobretudo, nas proposições de Walter Benjamin (2008 [1923]) e Antoine Berman (2007 [1985]), enquanto as discussões acerca das demais traduções e utilizações de Justino partem da noção de polissistema, segundo Itamar Even-Zohar (2012 [1990]; 2013 [1979]). Conclui-se que o Epítome já está inserido no polissistema brasileiro apesar de não haver uma tradução extensa da obra para o português brasileiro, sendo a lusitana de difícil acesso. Aqui, a tradução é acompanhada de introdução, notas e um índice onomástico, e espera-se que esses elementos possam contribuir com os estudos realizados a partir do texto de Justino em diferentes campos do saber.

This paper investigated into the philosophical and historical representations of the celebrated Adinkra cloth<br>production using the case study approach at Ntonso in the Ashanti region of Ghana. In this paper, I offer an interpretation of reception mechanisms and literary patterns of Epicurus’ compendia of his own doctrines as a particular genre of knowledge transmission, best defined through its manifold communicative functions. The analysis does not move from a descriptive point of view, but rather from a normative one, i.e. it aims to throw light on those passages in which Epicurus more or less explicitly outlines ways of reception and rhetorical characteristics of those compendia. Comparisons with similar texts by later authors, mostly (and significantly, as I try to show) medical writings such as those of Galen and Oribasius, provide further context for Epicurus’ statements. The results of the survey are then exploited to suggest a plausible answer about the relationship between Epicurus’ abridgements and his main treatise Περὶ φύσεως.

Where medical texts are concerned, Oribasius, active in the second half of the 4th century AD, presents a remarkable instance of abbreviating redactions: His chief source, Galen, is often extant and available for comparison, and sometimes we can observe Oribasius’s technique in three of his medical works with similar content, but with different aims and length, i.e. the Collectiones medicae, the Synopsis, and the Euporista. Furthermore, the same material may be presented again in the later medical encyclopedias written by Aetius (6th century) and Paul of Aegina (7th century). This may at times be an important help for correcting corruptions that have occurred during transmission, especially as most of our Greek mss. come from the later middle ages. Likewise of help are the Latin versions of Oribasius’ shorter works, syn. and eup. The samples chosen for the present study are Oribasius’ chapters on air, on leeches, and on cupping.
