Economic Change

The manner in which cyber-physical systems are being developed, and will be developed, is coupled strongly with the nature of the ambient economy. Currently, there is a mismatch between enthusiasm for technological change and caution about economic change. Orthodox economists and leaders in business and government generally give inadequate attention to the profound changes already underway in the earth’s climate and ecology. In this paper it is argued that change in the domain of economics is needed which is of the same order as the changes in technology, climate and ecology.

Between the second and the third century A.D., after centuries characterized by nearly continuous growth, the Roman Empire experienced a profound crisis. Evidence of this crisis comes from important economic signals, such as the fineness of coins and the number of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. After showing that the empire’s economic decline had already begun in the second century A.D., we will outline a hypothesis about the causes of the fall, based on the de-specialization of the Roman economic system, which prevented it from continuing its evolution towards modernity, leading it instead along a path of progressive implosion.

This paper analyses the development of economic and business ethics as an element of a new regulation scheme of the capitalist economy. It is argued that a more formal recourse to ethical justifications is becoming more indispensable due to a lesser relevance and/or efficiency of other mechanisms of social ‘embeddedness’ of the economic system. The paper will then also analyse the specific influence of the European process on this evolution, showing that the constitutive logic of this process tends to promote individualistic values and procedural norms.
